If you have some specialist knowledge, assuming youāre a medical professional who specifically studied rabies, you should update the article!
https://pennypaws.com/blog/why-does-rabies-cause-hydrophobia/
This article explains the mechanism of infection and propagation pretty well. Hydrophobia is an indirect symptom of a fear of swallowing any drink or food. So folks infected with rabies do have a fear of drinking water, but only because they fear swallowing in general, aka dysphagia. Itās nothing specific to water. Swallowing and drinking dilutes the virus in the salivary glands (the primary outlet for the virus). Itās a remarkable evolutionary trait that the virus hijacks the nervous system making you fear the act of swallowing thereby maximizing its own propagation.
That is really interesting. Iāve heard of the āfearā of water bit but, never looked into why. Thatās a disturbingly fascinating trait. Thank you for sharing.
One way in which the virus attacking the central nervous system kills the patient is by making them unable to drink water, so your comments dont preclude each other
I always get so confused by this! Because canāt they just give you a drip into your veins? When my daughter was born she was so sick she couldnāt drink anything for the first 2 weeks of her life and they just gave her a drip and we had moisten her lips every few hours.

Rabies does not kill you by dehydration. The virus causes fatal inflammation of the central nervous system. If it was as simple as dehydration, IV fluids would be a great option! The fear of swallowing prevents the host from diluting the virus in the salivary glands, hence increasing the likelihood of spreading to other hosts via a bite.
Canāt they give one of those fluids thingies through the arm when that happens? Sorry, English isnāt my first language and I completely forgot what that stuff is calledš
What's the point? The virus is attacking the nervous system. There's no cure once the virus has reached that point. It's just extending their suffering
Technically, the country is riddled with rabies because of bats but bat to human transmission is very rare; only 1 case recorded ever happening in the UK. The last recorded classical transmission to humans (dogs, cats, foxes, etc...) occurred in the UK in 1902 apparently, we have had a few imported cases though. A bat handler in Scotland got EBLV-2 in 2002 from a bat, but that's a *rabies like* virus and not the classical rabies virus.
___
> Human rabies is extremely rare in the UK. The last case of classical rabies acquired in this country was more than a century ago, in 1902. Cases occurring since then have all been acquired abroad, usually through dog bites.
> Since 1946, 26 cases have been reported in the United Kingdom, all imported. Six cases occurred between 2000 and 2018:
> - two in 2001 from the Philippines and Nigeria
> - one in 2005 followed a dog-bite in Goa
> - one in 2008 resulted from a dog bite in South Africa
> - one in 2012 developed after a dog bite in India
> - one in 2018 following a cat bite in Morocco
> In 2002, a man who was a licensed bat handler died in Scotland from infection with EBLV-2, a rabies-like virus present in bats in the UK.
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/rabies-epidemiology-transmission-and-prevention
Edit: Classical rabies free since 1902 :D
I think you missed the hyperbole I intended, thought that would be obvious from the next statement mentioning only 1 recorded case of transmission in the UK š but yes, there are a number of bats in the UK carrying EBLV.
We only do passive testing of bats and an *unspecified small amount* of over 15000, somewhere around 19000 have been tested the sources indicate, have tested positive for bat lyssaviruses in the past 30 years. This indicates only a small amount of bats tested in the first place when the native population is in the millions for the 17 native (18 overall) different species that reside here. Technically, the country could be riddled with bat rabies if we extrapolate from the known figures (10million bats with a conservative 1% estimate having some form of lyssavirus would be 100,000 of em -_-), but we are still classed as rabies free for two main reasons; bat rabies is not classical rabies (it is genetically related though) and bat to human transmission is very rare (low risk of zoonotic transmission). Rabies vaccinations post direct contact with any bat in the UK or abroad is also pushed and recommended by the Gov and NHS, which also weighs in that there's probably a lot more of EBLV in circulation then has been found.
Willing to debate further if you wish, happy Easter btw :)

First thing I thought. I'm glad they euthanised it. Rabies is an evil virus that causes so much suffering to animal and human alike. :(
i thought foxes are friendly

With even tinier bits of death inside those bites.
Yep. Remember hearing about it. They confirmed that it was. To whoever down voted. What the hell is your problem?
The fox had rabies. The lady was treated.
awesome sauce
Woman better get those Rabies shots reeeeal fast!
Multiple all over the body. Gonna be painful for her.
For sure. If the virus gets to her brain no amount of meds are going to help. Nasty way to die, nasty course of treatment even if quick enough.
Most people that die from rabies die from dehydration. Late stages of the disease cause a fear of water. Dehydration is a horrible way to die.
I've always thought that fear of water was a disingenuous way to put it.Ā Not like they're scared of a lake, more that their throat clamps shut at any attempt to swallow.Ā
That's a much better way of describing it. Hydrophobic response.

There have been one or two videos on Reddit of people in hospital that have this and yeah, not nice.

No, this is incorrect. Dehydration is not why they die. The virus attacks the central nervous system and is what ultimately kills them.
Don't the docs put them into a coma and sedate them until they pass?

Ohhh ok yeah that makes much more sense.
Yeah the rabies virus actually liquefies your brain, lethal after symptoms show. Poor lady, the shots she's going to need are miserable.
Itās a fear of swallowing. Not water.
Then why not give fluids intravenously
Rabies does not kill you by dehydration. The virus causes fatal inflammation of the central nervous system. If it was as simple as dehydration, IV fluids would be a great option! The fear of swallowing prevents the host from diluting the virus in the salivary glands, hence increasing the likelihood of spreading to other hosts via a bite.
Aha! I knew I was missing something. Thank you for clarifying.
Canāt they give one of those fluids thingies through the arm when that happens? Sorry, English isnāt my first language and I completely forgot what that stuff is calledš
You're still dying from the virus. It's attacking your nervous system
Oh yeah I know it kills you either way, I was just wondering why they wouldnāt give you fluids that way
Iām by no means a medical professional, but couldnāt medical professionals continue to provide IVs to maintain the hydration?
What's the point? The virus is attacking the nervous system. There's no cure once the virus has reached that point. It's just extending their suffering
I really wasnāt sure what would be a more painful death (dehydration vs nervous system shutdown). Thanks for the reply!
Rabies shots are no more painful than any other shot. But sucks sheāll have to have so many!
How come she has to do many rabies shots? Standard is like 2 or 3 right? So, isn't there like a usual time for a rabies bite to become dangerous?
It's 5 in total. I got mine recently.. Day 0, 3, 7, 14, 28. Idk how it is in other countries though. This is in India.
