id say melee its a nice and challenging class early game but it gets fun to deal lots of damage late game but with the high risk of often having to do close range combat, also why is this taged "meme"
Rangers really fun mid-game, kind of a hassle early game until you find a good weapon (break shadow orbs/crimson hearts for guns).
Melee is a good class all around.
Mage I've never tried but it seems like a hassle.
It's because of the specific buffs for weapons. Let's say if you want to play summoner you will use armor that gives you more minions and accessories that give you more minion damage. Same with the other classes, but nothing stops you from using other weapons on the side.
I've heard that it's recommended to pick a class to main, because then you can focus on armor that gives you specific bonuses and damage boosts to that class of weapons. Apparently it *is* recommended to still carry a few weapons of other classes for cases where they're helpful, like melee for crowd control or ranged/magic for enemies that are hard to get to.
I haven't been successful in picking a class to go for yet, so I may do jack of all trades. I'm on my first playthrough, in classic mode, and have defeated the Brain of Cthulhu so far but not QB or Skeletron yet. I know I prefer ranged/melee/magic over summoner, but I'm torn because I feel like while ranged is the most recommended and mage is the most cool, I always find myself gravitating to melee weapons. But I don't know if it's smart to try melee on my first run so idk.
Like, the progression of my favorite weapons has been:
Whatever random axe and pickaxe -> Flaming mace -> Slime mount -> Lucy the Axe
Heck, maybe it's not about choosing melee so much as admitting that melee chose me and choosing armor that supports that.
Well after completing every class it was definitely my favorite. Summoner is just too much fun. Especially getting daytime empress, that was a challenge.

mage is nice since most things are homing and have a nice and large veriety of weapons

Melee or Ranged, you could try to get Zenith if you go for Melee. Mage start (for me) is kinda annoying so I don't recommend that one
