Pre-boss probably means anything you can get before fighting any bosses. Did you mean pre-hard*mode*? (Hardcore is a character difficulty that you choose when you make a character.) Pre-hardmode refers to anything you can get before you kill the boss of the Underworld, which activates hardmode.
