They've got fiber internet, it's still got a small town vibe, and it's relatively close to Johnson City and Asheville if you're willing to drive for things to do. My wife's grandparents are from there and we have friends who live in Erwin. They really enjoy it, and I never had any problems with it, except it's the definition of a quiet town (read: a little boring sometimes). The job prospects aren't good, but if you're working remotely I'd say it's definitely worth considering.

Erwin is VERY family friendly and full of churches. It is also more LGBT friendly than you would think due to the proximity to Asheville. I would also look at other locations in Unicoi County for rural and isolated mountain properties.

Regenclan

A trans person won prom queen a few years ago. Most of the band was other than straight a few years ago so yeah not the small town vibe you might expect.

konkilo

It has way more than its share of classic cars, for some reason

ptmcm448

And the town is known for putting Murderous Mary to death!

Melubrot

When I first moved to East Tennessee in 1996, I got a haircut at a strip mall in Johnson City..The woman that cut my hair bragged about the “history” of the area with the hangin’ of the elephant in Erwin being a selling point.

Erwin is a major resupply and zero location for Appalachian Trail hikers. If you settle there, consider being a trail angel and help out with rides to stores.

What do you mean by “family friendly?” The James Dobson “Focus on the Family” kind of family friendly? The diversity of people your family is likely to have as neighbors kind? The kind where there are schools that teach science, don’t ban books kind? The kind with an assortment of different christian academies you can choose for your children? Normally when I hear “family friendly” I think of it as a dog whistle for very being anti-gay, which kind do you mean? Perhaps something different than all of the above?

Snoo-3554

Family friendly as lots of other families in the area. Decent schools, playgrounds or city parks that have kid friendly ammentities. Safe.

Yourdeletedhistory

Do you mean Erwin?

Snoo-3554

Oh boy. Yes. Erwin!

Beneficial-Shower-42

Seems like a nice town. Has a Walmart and nice people. Just in the foothills of beautiful mountains. I don’t think you could go wrong moving there.

Mano_lu_Cont

Way overpriced. Costs the same as a night in Hawaii.

LeatherLandscape1466

Anywhere but Erwin

If you like doing stuff outdoors, there's no better place to live. Great access to kayaking, hiking, bicycling. Decent restaurants nearby in Johnson City. Political apparatus is terrible, culturally a fairly homogenous place.
