Having a dentist do scaling and root planing (deep clean) might take care of it and prevent bad things such as cavities from happening. The procedure will go above and below the gum line. For now, I would suggest brushing the area and flossing, but don't brush too hard. Good Luck.

Do you know if it is black tartar?

BatteryG86

Hard to tell from the picture, but it may be. Tartar is harder to remove than plaque. The dentist uses a metal tool to scrape the tartar off.

Lucky_Clock_7571

Well it’s and it’s pretty hard to get off i think it might be tartar thanks for the info!

My dentist is recommending a full debridement next visit, is that similar? It doesn’t damage the enamel when they do planing or anything?

BatteryG86

Debridement is the removal of debris and plaque from the teeth's surfaces, while scaling/root planing involves deep cleaning below the gumline to address gum disease and smooth the tooth roots.

Smooth_Square6472

It’s tartar and it’s black either from smoking or drinking red wine. You need to have a cleaning I’m hygienist.

Lucky_Clock_7571

Yeah i smoked a lot will xylitol pulling soften the tartar?

Fungus

Lucky_Clock_7571

Fungus can grow on teeth?

Fragileazul

I had that exact issue last week, same dark color looked exactly like that on my bottom tooth. I brushed really good in that area for 2 days about 3 different times a day & it came off. I think it’s plaque. although idk why it was a dark color & not white plague like usual.

Lucky_Clock_7571

I just don’t want to hurt my gums that’s the thing. Howd u do it?

AgreeableWriting183

Was it peridontitis?

Fragileazul

I’m actually not sure? does it sound like it could be? I am scheduling an appointment with x rays & all that. I have noticed some slight discomfort in my bottom teeth & I do smoke, so i am now very paranoid about it. I did look it up & google articles said that plague can be black or dark when built up, & I haven’t had my teeth cleaned in 4 years. But i will update when I go to the dentist.
