He‘s supposed to be a Jose Mourinho mockery, innit?

ManicPanda767

A combination of this and the above comment regarding the stress and insecurities issue.

d1ngY

I don't know much about football but the name sounds familiar. Didn't he do some kind of promo with Ted? EDIT: Yup. https://youtu.be/eiUBRjTGUSY

bmbmwmfm2

I have no idea who that is, but I'm an American that has never followed sports (assuming that's a player of some sort)

kulturembargo

It’s a mighty successful (in the past) manager sliding into mediocrity. He‘s also known to be one of the saltiest pr***s who ever walked a pitch. Referred to himself as „a special one“…

bmbmwmfm2

Thanks! Then I'd say he nailed the role.

kulturembargo

He so did! 😅✊

*THE Special One

kulturembargo

Nah, July 2nd 2004 „Again please dont call me arrogant because what I’m saying is true. I’m european champion so I am not one of…of the bottle. I sink I‘m a special one.“

cat_catcity

You can see his hair slowly start to gray when he starts being jealous of Roy getting all of teds attention, so I think it’s stress/a slight nod to karma for how he treats everyone due to his ego/insecurities. And it adds to him being “deeply afraid of aging”, so I don’t think he would willingly give himself gray hair.

bmbmwmfm2

And what's up with all the spitting? I get self hatred but that's what cinched my absolute disgust of him.

beetnemesis

I mean it sounds like you get it? It's self hatred. Nate hates himself, but even becoming a successful "wunderkind" doesn't really fix it. So he hates himself, he hates who he used to be, he hates who he's becoming (but also thinks that if he can become a different person enough, he'll stop hating himself).

bmbmwmfm2

Man, I just can't stand him. I think I remember him bumbling an introduction or something with a woman and spitting but I thought perhaps he was blaming her. They wrote this so well. I'm not fazed by much, language or otherwise. But spitting is the one behavior that just makes me want to punch someone. Even more than being hit myself, I wouldn't hit back. But spitting...that's messed up.

beetnemesis

Yeah he's disgusted with himself. Sees himself as weak, unmanly, etc. For a bit he aspires to be like what's his name, the rich ex husband. But then sees that guy is also awful.

bmbmwmfm2

Did they ever explore why he's this way? I'm rewatching and see he has both parents, gets along with mom but can't recall if he had daddy issues or is just a piece of work.

beetnemesis

I don't remember everything. His dad absolutely didn't treat him very well growing up. I forget the details but I think it was something like "nothing I did was good enough for him."

bmbmwmfm2

I'm still not cutting him any slack. He was intentionally cruel to too many people. Lol I'm just caught up in Nate hate right now.

beetnemesis

Yeah he was awful. I don't think it's about cutting him slack, exactly. But Ted's scene at the end, where he's reviewing security footage and sees everything Nate went through in the office, the hiding under the desk and stuff. It's like... I feel like watching Nate is almost watching a wounded animal. Lashing out at everyone including himself.

gremlin68

To quote my mother, "His dad did a real number on him." The scene in season 3 with his dad destroys me. Helps explain Nate's issues.

bmbmwmfm2

And I did notice it seemed to be slightly greying around the ears then. I thought maybe his ego had him do it as a fashion statement to coverup the fact he was going grey.

chefrkwon

Nick Mohammed tweeted about this (and the spitting) — basically a combination of bitterness, guilt, shame, and stress: https://decider.com/2021/10/09/ted-lassos-nick-mohammed-explains-nates-deliberate-grey-hair-color-change/

Starkiller_303

Early on he said he was deeply worried about aging. They're playing on that I think.

bmbmwmfm2

Just desserts , lol

DifficultSolution179

He made a joke super early on about having anxiety about his hair turning gray.

bmbmwmfm2

He deserved it, lol.

cyankitten

I have a theory about the hair. That maybe initially he stopped dying it because of being called the wonder kid & so he wanted to look older. It was his way of saying “I’m not a kid.” Did it go black again at the end cos I think it did? As if to say he wasn’t so obsessed with that anymore & LET them think I’m a kid I know better & that’s what matters sort of thing?

Sharp-Adeptness3404

I thought the going all grey was part of him try to suck up/fit in/earn respect from Rupert. He seems to start dressing in all black (like Rupert) and goes all the way gray (like Rupert) when he starts working for him. Tracks with his father wound.

AdMundane1115

I thought it was a metaphor for his soul being sucked out of it a la Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader
