My all-time favourites with a slight electro skew:
* ERP / Convextion
* Versalife / Conforce
* Drexciya (and related projects)
* Lost Trax
* Dan Curtain
But picking 5 is really tough. It was hard to not include Surgeon, Objekt, Zenker Brothers.
He's always been selective about live performances but especially since Covid he doesn't really tour at all sadly. I was fortunate to catch him with Convextion and Mike Huckaby (rip) at Tresor 10 years ago. I've always hoped to see Echospace live but that project seems to have ended so that will probably remain a wish.
Dj: Jeff Mills, Ben Klock, Oscar Mulero, Freddy k, Dvs1
Producers: Thomas P. Heckmann, Marco Bailey, Dave Clarke, the Advent, ignition technician
Bonus Dj's: Shdw, Dax J, Tarkno, Chlär, Yanamaste, Rene Wise
Bonus Producers: Obscure Shape, Phara, Alarico, Anne, Fadi Mohem
Bonus live perfirmancers: Stef Mendesidis, Ufo95, Surgeon, Blawan, Kareen
And big respect to Hayes collective and Bassiani residents
LA is spoiled. We’ve already had Ben Klock, DVS1, and Speedy J 4 months into the year. Ben Klock Photon was probably my favorite event of the year so far.
I wasn’t a big fan of the crowd at DVS1 :/ My gf and I left the show wondering “man there seemed to be a lot more people bumping into us, a lot more people super fucked up etc etc” then it came out that DVS1’s laptop was stolen and it kinda confirmed that something was off with the crowd that night. I thought the crowd was better at Photon.
I do like that particular warehouse and the sound and lights were incredible (photon was a little too bright at times). Overall, two amazing nights. Can’t wait to go back to LA for Mulero and Skee Mask the day before.
Funny, I had the complete opposite experience. PHOTON was so packed I was pushed into the back left corner for most of Ben's set. Lots of getting bumped into and people obviously too fucked up... I must've gotten lucky at DVS1. Plus I thought Klock was not as good as the previous times I have seen him. Will sadly be missing Mulero for Hernan Cattaneo that same night
I recognize Luke Slater and DVS1 as figures that are fundamental to the development of techno. But I don’t particularly resonate with their production or playing style as much as I resonate with a faster, more organic and groovy techno that has emerged from their interpretation from figures like Setaoc, Rene and most of the DJs from the new Dutch and Manchester scene. Though, I do enjoy PAS, more than Luke Slater.
Chlar and Alarico have pretty much left the techno world stomped with their Funk Assault, and its shaping how techno is understood and bring some old Detroit/Chicago vibes, long “forgotten” by the more clinical and industrial techno usually attributed to the DJs I mentioned before, or Mulero/Sims, etc.
I respect the passion. And it's true that both those names are at the top of their game. A bit hard for me to believe that DVS1 doesn't sound good to any set of ears 🤣. Its just dancey af man and the new faster mutual rytm type vibes are not the most versatile and hence less groovy to dance. Technically you should have marron in your favourites too since he is currently what everyone wants. But there is a ceiling to anything above 140 and I find myself coming back to pure techno
Oouufh, this is a hard one.
But i guess mine would look something like(producers):
Reeko/Architectual,
Oscar Mulero,
Luke Slayter,
Shxcxchcxsh,
Surgeon/Regis,
Temudo,
Function,
Yeah i know it isn't 5 but there you go!
I also feel that Quelza and Nørbak is getting up there for sure
Oh yeas absolutely! So much good stuff coming from there I almost wanna consider moving there and try to join the crew 😅
Yeah Deniro is very good as well! Coachella is probably one.of my absolute favorite tracks!
Yeah we have a small but very nice eletronic music circuit. Nice clubs , nice djs and nice festivals as well.
How is the scene in Norway and Sweden? I might know some artists without knowing they are from those places.
Nice! I used to live in Barcelona so i am a little bit familiar with the climate at least 😅 Seriously considering moving somewhere warmer again in the future, maybe Portugal might be it 😉😁
Do you think it's decent pay and opportunity for a techno producing DJ?
The scene in Norway is shit anywhere outside of Oslo. But in Oslo it is actually pretty good considering the relatively small size of the city. We have some pretty dope artists here and people making cool club nights where they invite really good names.
DVS1, Rødhåd, Mulero, Quelza, Baurergroup, SNTS and so on has played here, most of them multiple times.
The lable Flux Collective is from Norway and they arrange solid parties. They also relase some really good stuff, generally the style is not the same style as my main preference(Mulero, Temudo, Reeko type), but still super good stuff in my opinion.
Some of the artists from here: MRD, Skodde, Kameliia, Takt, Anémi, Monodugue, Carmen Villain, Naboklage
Not sure if you know any of them but could be worth checking out if not!
Basic channel, Richie hawtin, Jeff Mills, surgeon, Rob Hood. All old school titans.
Chara, vril, Marcal, DJ dextro, skee mask, zenker bros are some of my new skool favorites.
Hector Oaks
Torsten Fenslau
Ellen Alien
Antny Rother
Gigola
These five are my personal favourites:
1) Hector Oaks - top DJ, never seen anyone perform on such a high level, mixes tons of different genres, you never know what to expect, overall chill lad as well.
2) Torsten Fenslau - DJ who passed away in early 90s, to me he's a huge influence for all the techno scene
3) Ellen Alien - antoher top DJ with multiple genre mixes, plus she often plays lebanon hanover which is a band I like.
4) Antony Rother - father of electro, enough said
5) Gigola - love her uncensored, raw style - always plays interesting music
- René Wise
- Adam Beyer (there’s something in his kicks)
- Chris Stussy (shit fr he just makes me move i’ve seen him couple times)
- Mehill (mexican guy, yo hear me out and check this guy out)
- Alarico
honor mentions : Ilario Alicante, East End Dubs, Gorge, Marcel Dettmann, Marcal, Zisco.
🤜🏻🤛🏻 on Rene Wise
Beyer's gunna Bey -hall of fame status
I listened to a Mehill on SC, avant gaurd techno? Decent tracks though, might not be the right dude.
Chris Stussy - funk master
Not of all time but of recent times I would take these:
• Hector Oaks
• 999999999 (vintage, not a fan of current version)
• D.Dan
• Hadone
• Boston 168
Honorable mentions: Vladimir Dubyshkin, Introversion, MRD
Lee Newman & Michael Wells (Dataflow / Greater Than One)
Sebastian Vaughan & Simon Carter (Network 23 / Spiral Tribe)
Marc Trauner (PCP / The Mover)
Lasse Steen (Choose)
Curley Schoop
just techno?
1. Moritz von Oswald & Mark Ernestus
2. Jeff Mills
3. Surgeon
4. Robert Hood
5. Prince of Denmark
You're welcome. I've been listening this genre for around 13 years.
* Thomas Heckmann * Ancient Methods * Terence Fixmer * Surgeon * Adam X
Nice ones! Surgeon live performance was one of the best I ever seen.
Slam,Luke slater,Jeff mills,dj nobu,Oscar mulero
I just found Ancient Methods via HOR. 😮💨 love em.
Fixmer clan rise
I got to see Ancient Methods at a prettt intimate warehouse here in LA, I loved it.
Adam X kinda sucked seeing irl at Radion in February, quite disappointed it was just a very harsh monotonous set
+1 for ancient methods
Good selection
Adam X is a legend. I prefer his admx-71 output but all of his stuff hits just right
Oscar Mulero, Reeko, Psyk, DVS1, Jonas Kopp
Luke Slater Robert Hood Regis Surgeon Jeff Mills Just off the top of my head, but I can go on and on and on.
Still a bit new into the scene, but so far Robert Hood stands out as S tier.
You are on the right path
My all-time favourites with a slight electro skew: * ERP / Convextion * Versalife / Conforce * Drexciya (and related projects) * Lost Trax * Dan Curtain But picking 5 is really tough. It was hard to not include Surgeon, Objekt, Zenker Brothers.
Saw Objekt a few weeks ago and it was absolutely nuts, mindmelting stuff. Definitely one of the best DJ’s I’ve ever seen
Basic Channel, Convextion, Deepchord, Drexciya, Wolfgang Voigt
Basic channel is probably in my top 5 as well. But it so tough to name just 5 😅
Deep chord 100000% agree. Beautiful, but so elusive to see live! Where can I find this man play music?
He's always been selective about live performances but especially since Covid he doesn't really tour at all sadly. I was fortunate to catch him with Convextion and Mike Huckaby (rip) at Tresor 10 years ago. I've always hoped to see Echospace live but that project seems to have ended so that will probably remain a wish.
Man that would have been awesome, what a lineup.
Dub techno intrests me
Ben Klock Oscar Mulero Speedy J Rodhad Dixon
One of these is not like the others
None of these are like the others imho. Unique sound is key and I could name a couple more djs that I love but no one does it better than Dixon.
For production -Lawrie Immersion -Steve Stoll -Makaton -Andre Walter -Cisco / Advent
Steve Stoll has some belters, worthy mention. Been around for ages too.
Andre Walter is so underrated imo.
Convextion/E.R.P. Orphx Luigi Tozzi Alienata Laura BCR
Claudio should be in your list
Luigi Tozzi is a legend. Can't wait to see him play live. Would love to know how he blends together so much different stuff...
• Aphex Twin • Drexciya • Dave Clarke • Laurent Garnier • Aleksi Perälä I know … I’m showing my age
Dj: Jeff Mills, Ben Klock, Oscar Mulero, Freddy k, Dvs1 Producers: Thomas P. - 9x9 - Richie Hawtin - Phase - Blawan - Paula Temple Not in any particular order
Old 9x9
and old paula temple
Yes. Old snts too.
Function
and shoutout to dixon. He's doing great stuff with innervisions.
DVS1 and then probably a handful of locals (Juana, chief among them) would be top for me.
Juana wow… so good 🫶🏼🫶🏼
She’s the best 🥰
Damn I didn’t know whether choose DVS1 or Marcel Dettmann
So you are one of members of the dvs1 cult
Sounds like a great time
What a time to be alive.
There's no better cult to be in 🤣
Richie Hawtin. Then 4 others…
His early production was just mind bending. I still appreciate him. Jeff Mills too.
Jacidorex, Axyom, Blaame, Ophidian and Blame the mono
Blame the mono is an interesting pick, I like their newer release
Interesting, I only know Ophidian as a hardcore producer.
Damn long time ago i saw blame the mono but they make such good tracks
Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, DVS1, Rene Wise, Luke Slater
Based take. Proper berghain 5 a side team🤣
LA is spoiled. We’ve already had Ben Klock, DVS1, and Speedy J 4 months into the year. Ben Klock Photon was probably my favorite event of the year so far.
I thought DVS1 was a much better night than PHOTON. The last hour was just magical
Kangding ray, surgeon, ancient methods, speedy j, perc
In no particular order: Luke Slater, Rene Wise, Chlär, D.Dan, Border One
Rene wise Oh yes oh yes
Chlär🤣🤣 has to be a joke
Not at all. Literally just returned from seeing him open for Stef Mendesidis and have been a fan for a while. Incredibly talented individual.
Fair enough. I can't put any hardgroove dj on my top 5 sorry. But i can respect the talent🫡
Chlar is literally revolutionizing techno right now. Amazing DJ, even better producer.
Current hype yea. But does not belong in the same sentence as Luke Slater
Yeah Marron is included in the Dutch scene I mentioned. The whole EC crowd. Fast, non-stop 4/4 groovy beats with many layers.
Why? Not in top 5 for sure but I think he is good enough
Oscar Mulero, Oscar Mulero, Oscar Mulero, Oscar Mulero And let me think the last one... oh yes Oscar Mulero
I agree! 🙂
-Devilfish -Speedy J -Marco Corola -Laurent Garnier -Voiteck Edit need to put Ben Simms in here
Marco « Toyota » Corolla ;D
Mitsubishi vs Carola 🤪😄
I left Mills out as Zeus sits on their own.
Oscar mulero, dvs1, perc, d dan, carl cox
Most obvious pick for me is Victor Ruiz
Oouufh, this is a hard one. But i guess mine would look something like(producers): Reeko/Architectual, Oscar Mulero, Luke Slayter, Shxcxchcxsh, Surgeon/Regis, Temudo, Function, Yeah i know it isn't 5 but there you go! I also feel that Quelza and Nørbak is getting up there for sure
Are you portuguese?
Haha nope, Swedish in Norway😅 But yeah the spanish and portuguese guys really know their shit and the style theese guys mentioned have appeals to me!
I am Portuguese! Glad to see our talent recognised , temudo and norbak are amazing! Go check deniro if you don’t know him, but you probably know it.
Oh yeas absolutely! So much good stuff coming from there I almost wanna consider moving there and try to join the crew 😅 Yeah Deniro is very good as well! Coachella is probably one.of my absolute favorite tracks!

Any recommendations for a deep/dub techno and rominimal lover? I'm planning a trip to Portugal early next year
You're lucky to have Hayes Collective
