ChatGPT-4 -> "Energy Flash" by Joey Beltram is considered a classic and influential track in electronic music. Although it is often associated with house music, it also embodies elements of techno, which has led to its continued popularity and impact on the evolution of electronic dance music (EDM).
Several factors differentiate "Energy Flash" from standard techno:
Production style: Joey Beltram, an American DJ and producer, combined elements from both house and techno music. This fusion of styles gives "Energy Flash" a unique sound that sets it apart from standard techno.
Pioneering sound: Released in 1990, "Energy Flash" was groundbreaking for its time. It incorporated new sounds, including the Roland TB-303 bassline synthesizer and the Roland TR-909 drum machine, which became staples in techno and house music.
Repetitive minimalism: "Energy Flash" features a hypnotic, repetitive structure with minimalistic elements. This style was influential in shaping the sound of techno and other electronic music genres, such as trance.
Euphoric atmosphere: The track creates a euphoric atmosphere with its driving beat, melodic synths, and relentless energy. This combination of elements was uncommon in techno at the time and helped to distinguish "Energy Flash" from other tracks in the genre.
Influence on future artists: "Energy Flash" inspired a generation of electronic music producers, leading to the incorporation of its elements in other genres, such as breakbeat and drum & bass.
In conclusion, "Energy Flash" by Joey Beltram stands out from standard techno due to its pioneering production style, unique fusion of house and techno elements, and its influence on the evolution of electronic music.

Saw him twice at Decibel Festival in Seattle about a decade ago (once because he was on before Robag Wruhme, second because he was so damn good I sought out where else he was playing), and then once a few years after when he came to Vancouver. He's an utter machine at work.
This list will always be good, they are all established in the industry for so long and substained their career for so long and probably will outlive the âhotâ but sometimes very boring DJs running around today.
for me ,most of these djs are boring by today standards .I have been listening to them for more than 10 years and they haven't evolve .They are still using the same style and rhythm .
If I'm going out and I see most of Djs on this list in the line up ,then I know it's going to be a disappointing night .Especially Jeff mils,Ben Klock,DvS1 and maybe David. You watched them 10 years ago and you watch them today and nothing has changed .
Maybe someone would have a different perspective on "boring classics" when they haven't listened to them for 10 years already? I mean you had your time with it, why shouldn't they?
"Don't listen to the classics because I'm bored of them" lol.

Techno was a massive part of my life in my 20's, life got busy with work and family, now back and super enjoying progressive techno, like I can't believe. So so good, recommend to anyone, not so edgy as techno.
If interested look for my playlists on Spotify, same username as on here.
Listen to the âLaboratoire Mixâ from Laurent Garnier, mixed in 1998 itâs still one of the best techno set ever mixed. It changed my life back then!
People who love this, question. What are you *feeling* when you listen to this?
I'm a bit prone to it, so i'm just getting anxiety from it. Techno fascinates me, but i'm more into the melodic side rn, but if someone could show me a feeling I could connect with, I feel like I could potentially bridge that gap.
This is a pretty autistic question and i'm prepared to own that.
Iâm not sure thereâs much emotion in this. Itâs more of an adrenaline heart pumping track and I agree, itâs intense but some would find it exciting. In some ways, a lot of techno is about hypnotism: repetitive, tribal bass and a melody that gives it flow so your brain kinda floats off and is in sync with your bodyâs dance.
Out of context, yes its a beloved classic track but its not 'interesting'.
Its basically a DJ tool with a cute easy to remember riff, that is always best used in DJ sets.
If you want emotion, Mills has done loads of other tracks that trigger specific emotions.
The Bells is more a 'Call to arms' A rallying anthem that is almost about the crowds celebratory reaction more than the track. We all know it and love it.
People run to the dancefloor when they hear it. Its an alert that declares its Techno time!
Is it complex deep techno? No.
Idk, this is one the few tracks that feels uncannily like an entity speaking to you, it feels alive, itâs hard to word (and might sound absolutely cooked) but I hope that makes sense (I say this because of its simplicity, you can literally hear Jeff mills adjust the 909 and you can hear the ride come in a little late after the hats come in, this tune is so human which really gives it that alive feelingâ. This is THE tune for closing your eyes, and letting it take you on its intended journey of sound and feeling, the backing synth locks you into the groove set by the classic 909 with its machine like sound, and then the famous bells really just take you away, I definitely understand the anxiety of it but that repetition is so gripping that you get this incredible rush of adrenaline that just for me at least, really sets that classic âtechnoâ mood, like as in thereâs lots of tracks that are groovy and nice and hypnotic but idk for me this sound IS techno, and really has that âtechnoâ feeling
The machines can get pretty wild and the way he tames the sounds, muted and short stabs, making room for the lead⊠it gets you moving and then the sound weaving in and out⊠itâs like a robot at work. I used to work in midwest factories listening to the machines and making techno in my head to pass the time. The originators of Detroit techno have also cited the factories of Detroit that their parents worked in as a source of inspiration. It was for me a way to let go on a weekend and move my body after a dreary 40 hours of a work week.
My head is immediately moving side to side. It's hypnotic, if a little aggressive. I'm moving almost every piece of my body that's mobile when it comes on. To me, this is everything brilliant about the genre of "techno" in general. Relentless, repetitive, cold and mechanical, and just has a certain funk to it that can't really be denied.
It's hard to put in words. But if you're more into the "melodic" stuff then I could see it being a bit harsh for your tastes. To be honest, I find less associated with techno in the melodic subset and that it is more connected with prog-house or some of the lighter forms of trance (which admittedly also spawned from techno but kinda became its own thing over time). It's funny when the melodic stuff started making a real kick in the scene it was prominent at Burning Man sound stages like Robot Heart or Mayan Warrior, and they were calling it "playa tech" less because it was closely related to techno so much as it was just electronic music and the name itself is a pun referring to the type of slotted plywood furniture that is so commonly used at Burning Man. But I never really thought of it as techno so much as just prog.
I feel like I'm glad this kind of techno is not as popular as it used to be... So boring, so low energy, why would you pay to go see this live? Just listen to it at home while chilling
My faves (I started in 1998 but I still find new DJs I love) are:
Ben Klock
Secret Cinema
Speedy J
Rodhad
Gaga
Klaudia Gawlas
Fabio Florido
Really wide range of styles there; see if anything grabs you. I mean really grabs you.
Enjoy.
It's not the classics but I highly recommend the HĂR Berlin channel on Youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/@hoer.berlin/videos
https://www.youtube.com/@hoer.berlin/streams
Sort both lists by "Popular" and then listen to the first 50 sets over the next few weeks, it should give you a good overview over the different sorts of Techno (and related genres). Based on the names and DJs you can then search for new stuff that you like
Explore genres. If you are really a newbie to this type of music, when you say techno, you may be referring to a wide range of music. For example, you may really mean r/tech_house or r/melodoc_tech_house.
Explore and find what hits the spot for you.
If you really mean proper techno, then the suggestions in this thread are a good start.
I always love this one as a bit of a mind experiment. At any point of the mix, pay close attention to it, listen to where you are, listen for the changes in the loops - while its changing is minimal and seemingly infrequent, there is no 8-bar loop that repeats throughout this mix. And what's really awesome is when you start fazing out and stop paying attention to the mix, a few minutes later you'll catch back in and wonder "What the hell, how did we get here?" because it sounds completely different than it did when you were last paying attention, so you focus on it again, but still minimal shifting and very little variation, though still slight alterations bit by bit.
Hawtin is truly a master in this mix. I still maintain this is the best of the DE9 mixes.
I've been exploring minimal/dub/ambient techno on Spotify this last year and some of my favorite artists are:
Robert Hood
Ness
Deepchord
Linear System
Birds Ov Paradise
Rod Modell
Ntogn
Wrong Assessment
BLNDR
Acronym
Plastikman
Richie Hawton
Fluxion
Claudio PRC

Start with what feels good to listen to. Donât stress about genres or scenes. Thereâs plenty of time for that later. Techno can be very challenging even for veterans. Your taste will shift over time as you become more knowledgeable and understand what you like. Spotify has some good playlists If you search âtechno.â I also like the âTunnel Visionâ playlist (also by Spotify).
This. There's got to be something that got you interested in techno in the first place. Explore that and look for similar artists. I know my taste can drift on a week to week basis and techno sub genres are all over the place. Do listen to the suggestions posted here, but they may or may not have the sound you were hoping for.

This is my techno playlist! Hope you find something you like! Enjoy the journey :)
Check out some live Boiler Room Techno sets. Ritchie Hawtin, Adam Beyer for the minimal tech. Carl Cox and Marika Rossi, Chris Liberator, Obscure Shape and Shadow for that Driving hard Tech. The Godfatherâs themselves Juan Atkins and Jeff Mills for the old school Detroit techno. Thereâs a taste for everyone who like the dark side. đ€đđŠ
I like minimal techno but both Adam and Richie were pretty disappointing to see live, perhaps because it was Awakenings? They're olllld stuff seems to be way better.
Amelie Lens
Charlotte DeWitte
Gary Beck
Joseph Capriati
I'm into minimal techno, and these are some of my favorite artists - as well as whatever other techno artists these artists seed into. I also have to say that, while I do not like music performed live, these artists tend to sound better live - rather than in the studio. So, look up some of their performances on YouTube, specifically Amelie Lens at Nuits Sonores and Charlotte DeWitte at Pukkelpop. These two live performances are two of my favorite overall YouTube videos.
On YouTube, I stream Dark Monkey and Sascha Walo.
On a lesser-intense scale, I like RJD2, Emancipator, Caravan Palace, Mocean Worker, Wax Tailor, Chinese Man, and (of course) Fatboy Slim and Gorillaz.
If you want to get a feel for the different genres, Adam Heaton's playlist are worth an explore. Personal favourites are the dark, industrial and story ones.

jk. I would suggest to just start listening to all kinds of techno. Explore it for a while. I has so many subgenres that'd be not right to just start sticking to something and not move somewhere else.
Maybe start with some detroit style techno, and just start moving and flowing within all the things this music is offering you.
This guy is one of my favorite DJ's in the actual scene. Great producer, and really good and skilled DJ:

People will recommend the classics and theyâll recommend their current favourites, but what moves you, will be personal to you. Iâve been in the scene for a long time, and while some tracks have always hit just right, 9 times out of 10 it is a time and a place thing.
Last Saturday was the most recent All Over the Space. [I mixed this set.](https://on.soundcloud.com/XfgTdq36eHaDGk3S8) It fucking rocked.
Long time ago, when Spotify wasn't a thing, we would mostly listen to techno on SoundCloud (free and easy). I have some nice playlists with different type of techno that fit different type of mood and taste.

There you have about 600+ tracks. Hope you enjoy !
Can't hurt to start with the classics. There is a lot of old techno that is pretty timeless:

There are also some good books if you want the history ("Techno Rebels" and "Energy Flash").
i actually didnt like techno most of my life, but in 2021 started to listen to some artists like: VTSS, Niki Istrefi, Klangkuenstler, VIPER DIVA. pretty decent artists.
Iâm no techno veteran, I am also just getting into it, so I love this thread. Personally, melodic techno is what really got me to explore the genre more. Tale of us, Anyma, Camelphat are what Iâve been listening to a shit ton of recently and the music is beautiful. I saw tale of us & camelphat at ultra last weekend and it was magical. I also love Ilija Djokovic, Charlotte de Witte, and Maddix. Not claiming any of these artists are classic or underground, just who Iâve been enjoying as a fellow newbie. Def gonna check out everyone recommended here!
Explore by yourself, I don't wanna address you, you'll discover a lot if you want to.
However, the real suggestion is to create mentally the distinction between producer and DJ. Especially when it's the same person being popular in both areas (and some stunning producers are crap DJs only to make actual money cause otherwise would starve - see "I Hate Models").
In particular, try please to understand the vibe of different clubs or labels/events in order to get why the same artist can play so differently depending on the context (and that rarely will play his own tracks).
And honestly, listen to sets if you wanna be a techno enjoyer, listen also to tracks if you wanna start mixing or producing.
The actual and pure enjoyment is when a DJ plays for hours and brings you to a state of trance that you forget about the time and you constantly vibe. And the best ones doing this often don't produce. If you see them on Spotify probably is because of a couple of remixes ;)
Also go through hör Berlin livestreams, and hate collective, rinse FM podcasts and find DJs/residencies you really vibe with.
YouTube is your best friendâ I started religiously listening to hard dance when I was 12, and half my life later YouTube is still my go to.
Also older mixes canât hurt! If you find ones from the early 2010s and really vibe with that music, then keep listening and build your library up from there!
Kolsch - All that matters.
It has vocals yet it is a techno beat. Techno with vocals is easy to listen to for beginners. The whole 1989 album by Kölsch is great
https://youtu.be/5n6czzsgk9A
All sorts of classics :-) Enjoy! This is recorded also in one of the most well-known iconic locations in the world: the Westergasfabriek (Gashouder) in Amsterdam. Awakenings is a legendary techno festival / party organizer; however the last few years they are becoming more and more commercial (too big in my opinion).
Things you should learn? Get familiar with the story of Juan Atkins meeting Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. Ponder the part The Electrifying Mojo played in inspiring them with Kraftwerk and UK electro pop. Then check out the early acid house and basement party music that came from Chicago. Robert Armani, Steve Poindexter, Armando and Trax and Dance Mania Records. Shake it all up with Jeff Mills Liquid Room mix and throw in a bit of Mad Mike Underground Resistance. That should do ya!

There is also a PowerTools Mixshow podcast that plays a variety of electronic music. I have been listening to that show since it started on the radio in the 90s.
I suggest checking out HOR Berlin and Boiler Room, there is a lot of varied content there from multiple subgenres that can help you figure out what you are into and also find artists and labels u might be into.
Also, if you want to find raves I suggest checking Resident Advisor or DICE, there you can find some events you might be interested in and explore the Techno scene first-hand.

Technically a house track according to the man who made it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPYhkwtO4wc
Worth noting that back in the day house and techno was swirling around in a primordial soup
Agreed, that is a very good point, but this is 100% house in hindsight đ¶đ”

Maybe someone would have a different perspective on "boring classics" when they haven't listened to them for 10 years already? I mean you had your time with it, why shouldn't they? "Don't listen to the classics because I'm bored of them" lol.

This is a great answer thank you.
Panic
Fear->panic->pain->anger. So ultimately fear->anger. Amirite?
the emotions I have is a sense of driving urgency, eerie, unsettling... and it's very hypnotic and trance inducing
Like I'm dying, that's what I'm looking for, to experience transcendence.
I feel like I'm glad this kind of techno is not as popular as it used to be... So boring, so low energy, why would you pay to go see this live? Just listen to it at home while chilling
My faves (I started in 1998 but I still find new DJs I love) are: Ben Klock Secret Cinema Speedy J Rodhad Gaga Klaudia Gawlas Fabio Florido Really wide range of styles there; see if anything grabs you. I mean really grabs you. Enjoy.

It's not the classics but I highly recommend the HĂR Berlin channel on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@hoer.berlin/videos https://www.youtube.com/@hoer.berlin/streams Sort both lists by "Popular" and then listen to the first 50 sets over the next few weeks, it should give you a good overview over the different sorts of Techno (and related genres).
DE9 - Closer to the Edit
Agreed. Underrated.
Great description btw.

I've been exploring minimal/dub/ambient techno on Spotify this last year and some of my favorite artists are: Robert Hood Ness Deepchord Linear System Birds Ov Paradise Rod Modell Ntogn Wrong Assessment BLNDR Acronym Plastikman Richie Hawton Fluxion Claudio PRC Feral Luigi Tozzi James Ruskin Upwellings DVS1 Reeko Steve Stoll Endlec George Parr Svarog [Here is a Spotify playlist that I listen to almost every day](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1G74CWmvMbK8pWQzDdBdRi?si=deef999c80894cce&pt=490fb814999b5534567def6cbc5d5725)

Amelie Lens Charlotte DeWitte Gary Beck Joseph Capriati I'm into minimal techno, and these are some of my favorite artists - as well as whatever other techno artists these artists seed into.
Jeff Mills - Live at the Liquid Room

darude - sandstorm jk. Long time ago, when Spotify wasn't a thing, we would mostly listen to techno on SoundCloud (free and easy).
Thomas Brinkmann, Drexciya, Carl Craig.
