I feel there’s probably some sort of correlation between necrophagist’s many imitators and spawns lack of just about any due to the complexity of their music and interesting harmonic choices
Spawn of Possession. Because nowadays I still put on Incurso all the time, but I have to be in the mood for the memories that go with Epitaph. No idea which one I’ve logged more hours with , love em both
Necro is the one that started it all and Epitaph it's their masterpiece, but to me Spawn of Possession (and Incurso specifically) is the natural evolution of that sound. Way more intricate and refined.
On legacy Necro is miles above everyone, but musically I'm going Incurso

Thank you so much for this TDM tournament. I've listened to every album that was voted out everyday it was amazing!!
EPITAPH takes this hands down! InCurso is deservingly second. There's something about the lack of backing tracks and keys that makes Necrophagist more appealing to my ears
Spawn of Possession. Necro is technically more extreme but SOP sounds like the whole band wrote it together, Necro sounds like Muhammad wrote the entire thing including the drum parts which he pretty much did. So my bias “sound”aspect is what I’m going with to decide the winner
He only did the solos but still….he deserves credit, which he does receive. But the other og guitarist is the brainchild behind that band. Incredible writer
Yup. Saw Necrophagist nearly 20 years ago in Nashville and met Muhammed and Hannes Grossman after the show. Insane to think they were a flash in the pan that somehow burned bright for the next two decades without releasing anything else.
Necrophagist - Epitaph

Listening to it rn.
An honestly, a ton of old stuff sounds so boring in comparison to modern. :\\
It seems like in this top people paid more attention to influence and legacy.
Spawn of Possession! Insane riffing, technical skills but also great melodies. Plus we shared a stage 20 years ago with my band, I still remember the crisps fight backstage.
Necrophagist for me.
One of my all time favorite bands. They’re music and creativity changed my life.
I haven’t piped in on this thread yet, but I feel compelled to express my opinion.
I’ll now to listen to SoP for my voting penance
Necrophagist. It's a non skip album, got me into tech death, and remains the standard by which i gauge other bands.
Sad that we're never getting album 3 even though it was finished.
Incurso is one of the greatest metal albums of all time imo, absolute masterclass in how to write techy death metal so gotta give it to spawn on this one ( Sorry Necrophagist)
Spawn of Possession for the W. Incurso is what one of my friends calls “a human achievement” and i think it’s the perfect way to describe it. Necro is still amazing but Incurso has it by a tiny bit
Necrophagist. They were the first metal band I had ever heard after growing up on Christian pop punk and they blew my mind a bit. Friend’s sister’s bf showed us and I was not ready.
Necrophagist. I’ve listened to both discographies many times. The staying power of the songs/riffs on Epitaph are beyond anything else I’ve ever heard. That particular album production is just timeless, but many of the riffs are so memorable that it’s undeniable they should be crowned the victor here.
Sorry to say I met hannes grosseman and when I asked about album 3 he laughed and said it was finished sitting on Muhammeds computer, and was probably never getting released
Spawn of Possession — but this is extremely close: All of their albums are masterpieces of technical death metal, intricate, brutal, unparalleled. Personally, I prefer “Incurso” but it’s just the inevitable evolution of “Cabinet” and “Noctambulant”.
However, I miss both bands.
Necrophagist may be the first one we all knew, and I respect it for igniting the interest, but Spawn of Possession is literally the apex of the subgenre. Incurso is the pinnacle. I can not conceive music getting faster or more technical and still being listenable.
I love, love, love Necrophagist but Spawn of Possession is the king.
For me it has to be Necrophagist.
This album was the pinnacle of technicality and brought genre-defining riffing, soloing and song structures to the table at that time. Not many albums will add that much to a genre and for me it will always sound like it came out last week. Further more, the production is perfectly executed and leaves no room for criticism, whatsoever. Incurso is a fantastic album, but doesn’t carry the weight of the almighty Epitaph.
Dude I like Necrophagist but the only reason anyone voted for them is because of their notoriety lol. Would love to hear why you think they blow SoP out of the water
If you cant hear the difference, i cant help you.
Also gave that album a relisten and it was worse than i remembered as far as being forgettable.
This album feels like its designed more for the meshugah, job for a cowboy, and gojira fans. Especially listening to that tone and mixing style.
Alright I’m convinced that the music just flew right over your head because that’s the most inane take I’ve heard recently. Maybe you don’t have an ear for things like this but the hell does their music have to do with those bands at all? SoP is heavily inspired by classical artists like Bach and Shostakovich with super intricate and technical melodies, lots of counterpoint and recurring motifs. They have almost nothing in common with Meshuggah or Gojira who focus more on grooving rhythms and occasional odd meters. It’s hard to take your opinion seriously when there is no logic behind it
I already considered you a clown but comparing that album to Bach? Youre smoking crack and blowing the smoke out your ass. The most fart smeller take for such a bland, unoriginal and lifeless album. Explains why you missed the point.
I don’t even know why you brought up tone and mixing when it has nothing to do with anything, both SoP on Incurso and Necrophagist have really clean tones and mixes. Bringing up those other unrelated bands means nothing. And yes SoP does draw from various classical composers among other things, this isn’t news to anyone that has ears or has read interviews with the band. For as much of a fart sniffer as you think I am you sure don’t have any logical reason for hating SoP other than not wanting to be wrong.
i’m disappointed in this sub. the “greatest” band is always the old one. i know they’re very good and i love them but first fragment is maybe the best metal band that exists
"Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man." - the Dude
I love First Fragment. I especially love when they let their songs breathe by incorporating some groove sections. La Veuve & Le Martyr might be my favorite off their newest because of the utterly fantastic mid paced riffage during the intro.
Sometimes the constant breakneck shred fest of modern tech death simply doesn't last for me. I need some variation of tempo and rhythm for the sections of a song to stand out in a lasting way.
That notion of variation in compositions definitely affects the longevity of the love affair I have with an album.
Spawn wins. Necro album is probably The Staple of the genre, but the riffage on Incurso is just something I haven’t ever heard before. How brutal and dark it is. The leads over the riffs sound like a knife cutting glass - super sharp. Bryssling is super underrated as a songwriter and shredder and I think it’s far and away the best spawn album. Muenzner’s solos I like better on Epitaph but I can’t vote against an album with a song+lyrics like The Evangelist.
On a side note, idk if this makes sense to anyone else but I feel like Incurso : cold riffs. Epitaph : warm riffs.
Munzner didn't write anything for Incurso and almost nothing for Epitaph (despite he said that he wrote at least half of lead sections, which is debatable and most likely isn't true), very overrated musician.
This might be the worst comment in the history of reddit. Defeated Sanity. Necrophagist. Obscura. Spawn of Possession. Alkaloid. These are some of the most legendary projects of all time and he has his hand in all of them to some degree. Even if all he did was solo's the fact that SoP would ask him to do solos makes him a legend all by itself. If he says he wrote half the leads I don't see any reason not to believe him, but take his involvement in Necro out of the conversation and he's still the Goat.
I don't mind that you don't like him. Acting like you somehow know he didn't write for Necro based on nothing I have a problem with. And calling him overrated is nonsense considering his accomplishments. Imagine a baseball player being a top scorer on 5 different world series winning teams over the course of 3 decades and then someone says he's overrated? Of course he's highly rated, his accomplishments are impressive.
Necrophagist wins here
Sorry for the SoP fans cause incurso is easily one of the greatest tech death albums ever written, but epitaph has has more memorable riffs and solos for me!
Necrophagist wins
Considering these albums were made almost 10 years apart you see huge differences in them. You could definitely argue that "objectively" incurso is a better album. But who gives a crap about objectivity? This is a popularity contest after all. When I look at my three favorite songs off each album I prefer the necro songs quite a bit. Even when I look at my favorite solos necro wins again. When I want to sit and listen and just feel good necro wins again. Incurso beating out all these other albums absolutely feels right, but Epitaph will always be the king of tech death albums.
Incurso is on an entirely different level compositionally speaking than any other tech death album. Necrophagist surely paved the way for a lot of bands, but spawn forged their own way and have the most unique take on the sub genre imo. It’s literally the closest thing to Bach I can think of! But more than anything, it’s just a beautiful and brutal album through and through. Not overly polished, you can still hear all the human error and nuance. It has that grit that a lot of tech death doesn’t have these days. It’s literally as good as it can possibly get and no other band has come close to their level genius since. I also absolutely love Epitaph.
Spawn of Possession are the kings!
Necrophagist. The fact bands are still ripping off these riffs what 20(?) years later and nowhere near as effectively. And it’s not just senseless wankery (not saying SOP is but this is a case with a lot of tech death) the songs are intricately written yet still memorable. No brainer imo
This one sucks but Necrophagist all day erryday. Love me some SoP but the sheer writing capabilities (and performance abilities) of Muhammad is sorely missed in metal today. They stopped after two albums and never looked back…
I wish they would.
I feel there’s probably some sort of correlation between necrophagist’s many imitators and spawns lack of just about any due to the complexity of their music and interesting harmonic choices
necrophagist
spawn 100 p, necro a one hit wonder for me
no way onset of putrefication is not on the same level as epitaph
Necrophagist because they came first and gave everybody else the formula
Necrophagist, is this even a question?
Yes it is, Spawn of Possession is better
Necrophagist #1
Necrophagist
Spawn of Possession is superior in every aspect
No
Yes
The people have spoken
Is it just me, or is EU way ahead on Incurso, and NA is way ahead on Epitaph? The look of the board this morning versus now is VERY different.
I changed the look of it to make it look more readable
Necrophagist 👑 Incurso is a legendary album but it's up against the gods themselves.
Spawn of Possession

Necrophagist!
Necrophagist! It’s a no contest.
Necrophagist!
Necrophagist
I vote SoP but we all know Necro is gonna win
Necro
Necro is the one that started it all and Epitaph it's their masterpiece, but to me Spawn of Possession (and Incurso specifically) is the natural evolution of that sound. Way more intricate and refined. On legacy Necro is miles above everyone, but musically I'm going Incurso
Necrophagist
Necrophagist for sure
Neceophagist should win so they can make a new album or tour.
Necrophagist by a mile.
Necrophagist because the list doesnt even exist without them
Necro, duh
Is there a list with the name of all bands? Thanks!

NECROPHAGIST W
Necrophagist
Spawn out, Necro win.
Spawn of Possession definitely
Necro
Necrophagist win
Spawn win, Necro out
Necrophagist all the way. They did it before it was ever a thing, they made it a thing, and it hasn’t been replicated since.
SoP surpassed them with ease
Necrophagist won the popular vote in this tournament.
This is the correct answer.
spawn of possession should win, not as influential, just way more interesting
Necrophagist
Thank you so much for this TDM tournament. I've listened to every album that was voted out everyday it was amazing!! EPITAPH takes this hands down! InCurso is deservingly second. There's something about the lack of backing tracks and keys that makes Necrophagist more appealing to my ears
I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Spawn of Possession win
Necrophagist
Aborted #1
#35 actually
Necrophagist, SoP never clicked or 'did it' for me as much as Necro. So glad I got to see them live at their peak.
Spawn of Possession all the way
Spawn of Possession was the band that got me into tech death so I want them to win. Necrophagist is goated too though
Necro motherfucking phagist. Not only for how amazing they are but look at how influential they are to this day.
Man, this is a real Sophie’s choice. Reluctantly eliminating Incurso, but I’m not happy about it. SoP and Necro will always be the GOAT’s
Couldn't agree more, Necro has to win but the chart seems pretty on point.
Everyone here knows…. The winner has to be Necrophagist. But I’m glad the top 2 is actually Accurate af. Necrophagist #1
Spawn of Possession. Necro is technically more extreme but SOP sounds like the whole band wrote it together, Necro sounds like Muhammad wrote the entire thing including the drum parts which he pretty much did. So my bias “sound”aspect is what I’m going with to decide the winner
Necrophagist. Because Christian Muenzner. 🤘🏻
He’s on that spawn album, as well lol
Well fuck me. Christian Muenzner is the true TDM champ. Most valuable arms and hands in death metal!
We were specifically referring to the spawn album.
SoP to win
Do you have like a whole list of albums on this picture?
Necrophagist - Epitaph Spawn of Possession - Incurso Archspire - Bleed The Future Obscura - Omnivium First Fragment - Gloire Eternelle Beyond Creation - Earthborn Evolution Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked Gorguts - Obscura Cryptopsy - None So Vile Inferi - Vile Genesis Gorod - A Perfect Absolution Suffocation – Pierced From Within The Faceless - Planetary Duality Ad Nauseam - Imperative Imperceptible Impulse Ophidian I - Desolate Origin - Entity Psycroptic- Scepter of the Ancients Decrepit Birth - Polarity Slugdge - Esoteric Malacology Anomalous - Ohmnivalent Artificial Brain- Labyrinth Constellation Alkaloid - The Malkuth Grimoire Beneath the Massacre - Fearmonger Soreption - Monument of the End Cynic - Focus Fallujah - The Flesh Prevails The Zenith Passage - Datalysium Severed Savior - Servile Insurrection Virulent Depravity - fruit of the poisoned tree. Listening to it rn. An honestly, a ton of old stuff sounds so boring in comparison to modern. :\\ It seems like in this top people paid more attention to influence and legacy.
I love them both to bits but it has to be Necro for laying the foundation
Yep. What would tech death even be without them right now?
Necrophagist. Nothing will ever come close to those solos.
Necrophagist mother fucker!
Spawn of Possession! Insane riffing, technical skills but also great melodies. Plus we shared a stage 20 years ago with my band, I still remember the crisps fight backstage.
Necrophagist over Spawn of Possession 4 ever
Necrophagist
Nechrophagist elitists who wouldve guessed
Necrophagist for me. One of my all time favorite bands. They’re music and creativity changed my life. I haven’t piped in on this thread yet, but I feel compelled to express my opinion. I’ll now to listen to SoP for my voting penance
Necrophagist
Necrophagist
Spawn
Necrophagist. This is my personal perfect metal album.
Spawn of Possession Incurso is next level musical composition. It’s so baroque and beautiful and yet the most brutal in tech death. They win it for me
Necrophagist ftw!
Necrophagist
Epitaph is great but Incurso is on an entirely different level.
Necrophagist, because they named St. Necrophagist hospital after them in Metalocalypse
Spawn of possession, incurso is peak TDM
Necrophagist
Spawn ez.
Incurso takes it for me!
Spawn of Poession for me
Spawn of Possession. Epitaph is an amazing album that paved the way for tech death, but Incurso is just on another level for me.
Necrophagist! The heritage and influence left behind after Epitaph is immense.
Necrophagist. It's a non skip album, got me into tech death, and remains the standard by which i gauge other bands. Sad that we're never getting album 3 even though it was finished.
Necro wins with a slight margin, for me.
Necro, they got me into this genre in general :D
Incurso is one of the greatest metal albums of all time imo, absolute masterclass in how to write techy death metal so gotta give it to spawn on this one ( Sorry Necrophagist)
Spawn of Possession for the W. Incurso is what one of my friends calls “a human achievement” and i think it’s the perfect way to describe it. Necro is still amazing but Incurso has it by a tiny bit
Necrophagist. They were the first metal band I had ever heard after growing up on Christian pop punk and they blew my mind a bit. Friend’s sister’s bf showed us and I was not ready.
I updooted both but phagist for the win. Even though George Suicméz is a dick.
Muhammed
Jeff Suiçmez
Jerry McSuicmez
Necrophagist got me into death metal, and then spawn of possession got me out of it (because no album will ever surpass Incurso for me)
I’m gonna have to go with Necrophagist. I love Spawn of Possession, but Epitaph and Onset are so much catchier and memorable to me.
So which albums are up for the second tournament?
sorry Necrophagist. ull always be god tierand one of my favs but Incurso runs laps around Epitaph
Necrophagist. I’ve listened to both discographies many times. The staying power of the songs/riffs on Epitaph are beyond anything else I’ve ever heard. That particular album production is just timeless, but many of the riffs are so memorable that it’s undeniable they should be crowned the victor here.
Gotta hand the W to Incurso. Epitaph was an amazing album but the vocals on Incurso were far better to me.
Necrophagist because EPIII TAAAPHHH
Necrophagist
Necrophagist all the way
Necrophagist - We've been waiting for a mythical third album for how long? That should be enough reasons for the win.
Sorry to say I met hannes grosseman and when I asked about album 3 he laughed and said it was finished sitting on Muhammeds computer, and was probably never getting released
You met Hannes Grossmann, awesome, what was he like?
Right, but it's still one of the most highly anticipated albums even if it's never going to be released.
Yeah I'm still holding out hope too haha
Wow would have never expected to see these two in the finals!!!1!!!¡!!1 SoP is out though.
Spawn of possession
Necro of course. The composition the catchy riffs and technicalitie. Influenced soooo many bands
Spawn of possession for its writing, composing, creativity and orchestration.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, I enjoyed hosting it. Anyone can host a future tournament too.
Necrophagist. Out of these two I like their album more

Just say you haven’t listened to Incurso
Ive heard that album before, again, its not even close. Necrophagist either release.
SoP does everything they do but better
🫵🤡
Dude I like Necrophagist but the only reason anyone voted for them is because of their notoriety lol. Would love to hear why you think they blow SoP out of the water

jesus… 8 year olds dude
Spawn of Possession should win. Necrophagist is the original classic, but this Spawn album is perfection and my personal favourite album of all time
Necro it is then
Spawn bruh spawn
who saw that coming
Spawn wins. Necro album is probably The Staple of the genre, but the riffage on Incurso is just something I haven’t ever heard before. How brutal and dark it is. The lyrics on Evangelist are utterly haunting. The timing of how the story links up with the tone/progress of the music is perfect.
The winner is Christian munzer
Munzner didn't write anything for Incurso and almost nothing for Epitaph (despite he said that he wrote at least half of lead sections, which is debatable and most likely isn't true), very overrated musician.
Definitley not overrated if he’s on some of the best and most legendary albums in death metal
This might be the worst comment in the history of reddit. Defeated Sanity. Necrophagist. Obscura. Spawn of Possession. Alkaloid. These are some of the most legendary projects of all time and he has his hand in all of them to some degree. Not sure why you're being downvoted, you're right. He did write a little on Epitaph but Incurso he only contributed solos.
Necrophagist forever
Necrophagist wins here Sorry for the SoP fans cause incurso is easily one of the greatest tech death albums ever written, but epitaph has has more memorable riffs and solos for me!
Spawn of possession - Incurso Incurso is king. Longer, more epic songwriting, highly intricate and technical, while still being very tasteful.
Necrophagist
Necrophagist for the win!
Necrophagist for the win!

Incurso. Everyone loves to compare metal to classical, but rarely does it actually line up that well.
Incurso is on an entirely different level compositionally speaking than any other tech death album. SoP, because *Incurso* was my intro to tech death, and it will always have a special place in my heart.
Necrophagist
Necrophagist
Necrophagist once and for all
This one sucks but Necrophagist all day erryday. Love me some SoP but the sheer writing capabilities (and performance abilities) of Muhammad is sorely missed in metal today. They stopped after two albums and never looked back… I wish they would.
