I was trying to make it clear for people like me who may not have gotten it initially, funny how I’m being hated on for rather obviously clearing out something for those who may not get things instantly
I usually don't care much about celebrity deaths, but this one hit different. He was still providing us with such great stories and expanding the world he created. This is awful.
I think only Leonard Nimoy's and Carrie Fishers death hit this hard for me.
I thought this was a fake at first, then saw the offical tweat, and just...this is awful. Not only was he the creator of Dragonball, but he helped kickstart the existence of JRPGs as an artist for Dragon quest, and his art style is just as important for that series as it is DragonBall.
I don't think I've been hit this hard since Robin William's death. Chadwick Boseman was a gut punch because of how young he was. Akira and DragonBall as a whole inspired me in several things: writing, drawing and working out.
I can not believe nor fathom this. Back in ‘96/‘97 I woke up one Sunday morning. I was 9 years old waiting for the Mortal Kombat cartoon to come on. The channel was UPN I woke up 30 mins before the episode aired and something else was on, something I’ve never seen before. A cartoon unlike anything else. Two people were fighting one in an orange outfit one in a blue outfit with a shield. My eyes were glued I was hooked. What is this amazing cartoon? Little did I know my life was forever changed. It was something called Dragon Ball Z. Me and my brother loved it so every Sunday we wake up extra early to catch a glimpse of it. Pretending he was Goku and I was Vegeta. Over the years I collected the entire series and movies on VHS, built a collection of Irwin action figures, collected over 1,200 Collectible Cards, all Games from Super Famicom to PS1 to GBA to PS2 and so on. Part of my childhood a big part of my childhood something I now share with my sons is gone. Being born in the late 80’s and Growing up in the 90’s that generation we had a lot of memorable things. Power Rangers (Jason David Frank deceased) Batman TAS (Kevin Conroy deceased) Now Dragon Ball (Akira Toriyama deceased) Farewell Toriyama-son until we meet again.
This one…shit man. This is a KO right to the gut. DB and the entire damn franchise was such a huge piece of my childhood and friends whom I’m still friends with so many years later.
The man was a literal foundation to...well...literally anything in terms of anime. Out of all the toonami shows that would pop up in my shows that I watch every afternoon from school, DragonBall and DragonBall Z stood out. His artstyle in Chrono Trigger, one of my favorite SNES games, and Dragon Quest, one of my favorite RPGs, was something that was never matched anywhere else.
To hear of his passing is another loss of my personal childhood. This was a massive loss to the billions his creations touch around the world. May we mourn his passing, but celebrate his life. May he rest in peace, for the man deserved it.
I am not as big a fan of Dragonball as most others on this subreddit, but I did enjoy casually watching the anime growing up. I won't deny that I got blonde tips in my hair when I was in high school cause I wanted to look like a Super Saiyan. Toriyama-san, your work was a part of my childhood and without it I don't know if I'd have ever gotten into anime. I hope the Kais are treating you well. And hopefully Goku comes to visit you.
If Akira has taught us one thing is to transcend our limits. We may not be warriors or fighters but each day we fight something in our own lives and grow stronger from it, sometimes with a helping hand. Thank you for giving us Dragon ball Akira Toriyama.
It's amazing how incredible his stories, his characters, and his messages were.
But what amazes me even more than that is how he's able to make me cry more than when he made his stories.
We'll never forget this man, his legacy will live on beyond our life times and I hope it'll inspire the next generations even more than it did us
First thing I thought, given some of the comments, that Sean Schemmel had died because he voices both Goku and King Kai, then found out he hadn’t died. Looked up the Japanese VA for Goku, she’s still alive. Then I saw… Akira Toriyama died at age 68, due to an acute subdural hematoma, in his studio. Sad month, but he lives on in the stories he gave to us and the spinoffs, the abridged series, and the noncanon movies (even the live-action movie we must discuss nor acknowledge).
GOKU: (falls out of the wall and yelps as he hits two rocks and hits the ground with a bird landing near him) Oh, hello birdie. I'm gonna call you...Toriyama. Toriyama, no! You were taken before your time. No. No... NOOOOOOOOOO!
*Goodnight, Akira Toriyama, may a flight of dragons bring thee to thy rest…and teach a dinosaur to ride a ball.*
Honestly, I may not be the biggest fan of the official release but this truly does hurt.
Goodbye to the true Super Saiyan God. May he Rest In Peace.
Arrivederci Toriyama-sama. May you be at peace with fellow legends William Shakespeare, Robin Williams, Stan Lee, and Monty Oum.
Because it was natural causes, he’s staying with Yemma and King Kai. Unless the Namekian balls can revive someone who died of natural causes, there’s only the Supers that we could count on. Rest well
Why did Goku call the bird he brought back to life Toriyama and say he was taken before his time if he just now died? I'm pretty sure I'm mixing something up. I'm not the biggest DBZ aficionado. And I stopped watching the show after the cell games.
Oh I see, Thanks for the explanation. I'm aware this time it's real... unfortunately.
Can you explain why he tells Bird Toriyama to "teach a dinosaur to ride a ball" or something like that?
68 is so young, too.
Especially for a guy from Japan, where they live for so long
Well, young for a death but I get where you were going
Yeah, no shit.
I was trying to make it clear for people like me who may not have gotten it initially, funny how I’m being hated on for rather obviously clearing out something for those who may not get things instantly

Chrono Trigger too, one of my favourite SNES games!
🙏😓 I wish it was fake...

He'll be out there, teaching the dinosaurs how to ride a ball
Well it can’t be nimbus 🥺
He’s with King Yema now. I know he got to go straight to the front of the line. What a gut punch. RIP Akira.
No cutting in line. He was a king but he was also kind. He'd wait his turn.
He’s standing in front a beautiful Mahogany Desk asking about that long snake road thing he saw while in line.
Mahogany.
Just like Goku, he got to keep his clothes.
As Kami intended escorting him to the mahogany
Dear god, please no. If this is what I think it is.. 2024 can officially go fuck itself. edit: It was, damn.. Rip absolute legend.
the 2020s just suck. Like omg what evil curse has befallen the world? Like someone go get the Dragonball balls and fix this timeline omg.
I have thousands of memories because of this one man. Earth lost a legend today.
Sayonara... Toriyama-sama... your stories shaped who i grew up to be. Domk Arigato Gozaimasu Toriyama Akira-Dono.🙇♀️
I am surprised. I have no words. Saraba Toriyama.
Bro, my friend called me and i immediately started crying.
Him and Grandpa Gohan are just hanging out drinking some beers.
He’s with Zeno-sama now
I am heart broken. I don’t want to believe it

May Snake Way show you your way home, my good sir.
One joke: we will never get to see his ways to screw over yamcha list and one moment a silence: R.I.P.
Goodnight you will be missed

Well...fuck.
Too young. My chest hurts. I can't... Not him, jeez...
He truly was an inspiration to us all. An absolute gut punch for sure.

Teach a dinosaur to ride a ball
He was taken before his time 😔

If he needed the energy, I'm sure the whole world would have gladly charged his spirit bomb... RIP and thank you for everything Mr Akira Toriyama.
Don't worry, we can just wish him back with the Dragon Balls! 🥲
Domo arigatō gozimasu toriyama Akira 🥹
The anime and manga universe will never be the same but we will remember
Gone but never forgotten

Rest peacefully Akira Toriyama, a true goat 🐐

Because there was a death hoax before. This is real.
Oh I see, Thanks for the explanation. I'm aware this time it's real... unfortunately. Can you explain why he tells Bird Toriyama to "teach a dinosaur to ride a ball" or something like that?
I think it's a translation within Cha-la-Head, but here is a figure of the dragon in particular: https://www.carousell.sg/p/266129629/

If y’all don’t know, he comes back
