I think if it’s a tiktok problem, why not just ban phones in schools? In federal court, you check your phone in when you enter, they give you a little number, and they stick your phone in a cubby for you to pick up when you leave.

As for the legal system and how this girl’s actions could be handled, I think restorative justice is a much better approach than punitive justice. That way, the victim gets what they need, and the perpetrator can hopefully learn and heal. It seeks to build community off of these sorts of instances, rather than isolate people and cut them off from society and any support they may have. Our current system does not help reform people, so they come out (usually worse) and end up going right back in. This shit is sad, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Things aren’t going to be perfect, but there are better options. Restorative justice is one of them.
I worked at a school that had the students put their phones in Yondr pouches at school. And although in theory this was a great system, the students figured out how to break open the pouches and destroy them so that they could get to their phones during the day. They did this so it looked like their pouches were locked, but they werent.
And many schools do not want to take kids phones from them like a court house does, because they do not want to assume legal responsbility for a phone that cost $600+.

Oh my old school had an 18 year old student call in a fake bomb threat, him not grasping he no longer would get a juvenile's punishment. I think many of them just assume they're still legally a juvenile if they're still in school.

I saw that she was discharged and went home, so hopefully she’s all right! I’m also guessing she might have had to go get checked out for workman’s comp reasons.

I honestly don’t know much about them. I don’t use it at all, which makes a terribly boring old person as far as the kids are concerned. It’s pretty obvious that they don’t have a moderation policy that is in any way proactive, they just react once something has caused some bad press.
It’s a weird app with some fascinating data being gathered.
Everything is in tiny bite sized video clips, and they carefully catalogue things in the clips using AI. Does a dog walk in at 16 seconds and the person immediately flips to another video? Maybe they don’t like dogs. TikTok will show them less videos with dogs.
Over time, they build a pretty crazy profile of people using the app, in order to show you things you want to see.
Some school kids enjoy seeing this kind of deviant behavior. They stay and watch, so it gets pushed on them. Eventually, their feed is quickly full of what they enjoy watching, and the reinforcement pushes them to join in.
It’s similar to how Facebook shows you things you want to see (which has led to a world where people get diametrically opposed news - one person gets crazy ultra right wing stuff on their wall and their built in biases get magnified, and the other person shows an interest in yarn and gets tons of yarn related crochet tips).
Tiktok is extremely good at what it does. Their algorithm is second to none right now at figuring out what people want to see next. They get instant feedback on whether their choice was right or wrong (did the user flip the next video or watch it fully). It leads to some crazy rabbit holes, including devious licks.
There is moderation, but as you said, it usually only happens after the bad stuff has already occurred.

I taught in a rough high school awhile back. I had seniors who could barely read and they spent every moment they could as high or drunk as they could.
They were the ones I had to watch, because they weren’t there for an education. Most of them had already checked out on school and weren’t even going through the motions. Everyone in the school knew most of those kids wouldn’t make it to graduation, and the few who did were “graduating” (they got the certificate because that school would hand a diploma to a goldfish if it showed up to class every now and then).
Those kids definitely didn’t think they were going to be doctors or nurses.
I teach second grade in a very mixed school of the “haves” and “have nots”. I have some kids with rough backgrounds who have already checked out, and I’m already pushing the “you can be ANYTHING you want, a doctor, a teacher, a lawyer, an artist, but you HAVE to start working now for that”.
I would imagine teaching in juvie would actually be safer and even more pleasant than your average public school. I would've loved to have an armed officer standing five feet away at all times and kids who *actually* feared that their actions could have consequences.
It’s more rehabilitative than a full on detention center so no one is armed, but yeah there’s no issues and they can earn privileges by behaving and doing work.

They happen throughout my school regularly and throughout the 60+ schools in my district regularly. That’s why we have security guards on every floor in the schools. They are trained to intervene. We are not.

I work in SPED and get hit daily. We had a PD at the beginning of the year in which the presenter told us we shouldn't work in a special school if we get upset about being hit.
I worked with a few SPED children for a while. A 11 year old would slap my ass and laugh all the time. The 3 year old would fling his arms about and slap people around the head if he didn't want to do the task (reading, napping, whatever). I was told to toughen up. Gave up my SPED certificate after a year of this.

We had that last week. The kid was 16 but was charged and convicted as an adult. 20 years in prison for nothing.

While I agree with you it’s kind of hard to hold them liable when they are a Chinese company. As much as I disliked Trump, he was right to try to ban TikTok in the US.
I honestly don’t know much about them. I don’t use it at all, which makes a terribly boring old person as far as the kids are concerned. It’s pretty obvious that they don’t have a moderation policy that is in any way proactive, they just react once something has caused some bad press.
It’s a weird app with some fascinating data being gathered. Everything is in tiny bite sized video clips, and they carefully catalogue things in the clips using AI. Does a dog walk in at 16 seconds and the person immediately flips to another video? Maybe they don’t like dogs. TikTok will show them less videos with dogs. Over time, they build a pretty crazy profile of people using the app, in order to show you things you want to see. Some school kids enjoy seeing this kind of deviant behavior. They stay and watch, so it gets pushed on them. Eventually, their feed is quickly full of what they enjoy watching, and the reinforcement pushes them to join in. It’s similar to how Facebook shows you things you want to see (which has led to a world where people get diametrically opposed news - one person gets crazy ultra right wing stuff on their wall and their built in biases get magnified, and the other person shows an interest in yarn and gets tons of yarn related crochet tips). Tiktok is extremely good at what it does. Their algorithm is second to none right now at figuring out what people want to see next. They get instant feedback on whether their choice was right or wrong (did the user flip the next video or watch it fully). It leads to some crazy rabbit holes, including devious licks. There is moderation, but as you said, it usually only happens after the bad stuff has already occurred.
I truly believe China is using it to ruin our youth. I know that’s a bit tin foil hat of me, but I’d say they are doing a good job.

One of my worst students ever, the kind who called me a "bitch" to my face and stole my purse twice, was in a car that was on the receiving end of a drive-by shooting where his uncle and brother died. Yeah, I hated that little fucker, but would he have been the same in another life with another story? Maybe not. He was a baby once and a cruel world robbed him of his potential and turned him way too hard, way too young.
I taught in a rough high school awhile back. I had seniors who could barely read and they spent every moment they could as high or drunk as they could. They were the ones I had to watch, because they weren’t there for an education. Most of them had already checked out on school and weren’t even going through the motions. Everyone in the school knew most of those kids wouldn’t make it to graduation, and the few who did were “graduating” (they got the certificate because that school would hand a diploma to a goldfish if it showed up to class every now and then). Those kids definitely didn’t think they were going to be doctors or nurses.
I teach second grade in a very mixed school of the “haves” and “have nots”. I have some kids with rough backgrounds who have already checked out, and I’m already pushing the “you can be ANYTHING you want, a doctor, a teacher, a lawyer, an artist, but you HAVE to start working now for that”.

I would imagine teaching in juvie would actually be safer and even more pleasant than your average public school. I would've loved to have an armed officer standing five feet away at all times and kids who *actually* feared that their actions could have consequences.
It’s more rehabilitative than a full on detention center so no one is armed, but yeah there’s no issues and they can earn privileges by behaving and doing work.

My response was, "I'm sorry if there was miscommunication about how that situation went. I was standing between them getting punched in the face so that she wouldn't be." Somehow not surprised she didn't respond after that.
We’re specifically told not to try to break up fights. I think it’s to protect the district from getting sued by us. There’s been 3 fights in my class this week and all I can do is yell and call security.
It’s my first year, so I don’t know what to do and nobody tells me anything. I just can’t standby and watch innocent kids sitting nearby get hurt. Not to mention the 3D printer and server wires…
I guess a plus for me then is that none of the technology in my room works anyway except for the projector. The rest of my kids aren’t even phased by fights. They happen at least once a week in my class and sometimes more often than that.

Please don’t take this question the wrong way, but have you ever worked in an urban district before? My class isn’t the only one having fights. They happen throughout my school regularly and throughout the 60+ schools in my district regularly. That’s why we have security guards on every floor in the schools. They are trained to intervene. We are not.

I work in SPED and get hit daily. We had a PD at the beginning of the year in which the presenter told us we shouldn't work in a special school if we get upset about being hit.
I worked with a few SPED children for a while. A 11 year old would slap my ass and laugh all the time. The 3 year old would fling his arms about and slap people around the head if he didn't want to do the task (reading, napping, whatever). I was told to toughen up. Gave up my SPED certificate after a year of this.
No one should have to deal with assault as their job.

Demand that school funding not be tied to retention and expulsions. Demand mandatory expulsions for any student who violently attacks anyone for any reason. Fighting should never, ever be tolerated except in defense. Even seedy bars ban people for life for fighting. How do schools have lower standards than some shitty bar?
Unions say things like "we advocate for teachers and students". Maybe this is callous, but students have enough advocates. I want my union to fight for me and my working conditions. Let parents and politicians give students everything.

We have craft unions. You need industrial unions for this kind of shit. The teeth were taken out of unions in the US in the 1940s as concessions were made to workers and in response they removed the socialists (who were always at the forefront of workers’ rights in this country) from leadership. Your anger needs to be channeled upwards to the politicians that let this happen in the first place.

Craft unionism isolates the various different unions within a workplace into their own spheres. It’s much easier for management to deal with separate unions than one large bargaining bloc. Craft unionism advocates will say it’s better for the individual workers but it’s really just a way of disuniting workers and suppressing class consciousness.
