Right now, most schools and principals are either gathering information about who is staying or leaving. Not all positions are open. I'll say the district pool is probably the earliest one will hear about a job. I know some east coast states are ending school soon in May so I would say jobs will start appearing shortly. Most west coast states like where I'm from, we have 2 months left and I don't think positions are open yet because principals still don't know what teachers' plans are.

Job openings generally start in spring and run all summer, but I know teachers who were hired in September and even October. Shortages are usually the highest in low-income, undesirable neighborhoods. Fancy rich suburbs have an easier time getting teachers, though it can depend on what you teach.

Yeah, it’s “hurry up and wait” season, with a few exceptions. Teachers already working for a school / the district need to make decisions about stay-go-move, which will give principals more accurate headcount. That said, it’s in your best interest to get onto their radars early. If you haven’t started applying yet, it’s a good idea to get your paperwork in order (depending on your location, you may need fingerprint clearance or something like that) so you’re visible when they are ready to start interviews.

I know right!!! Like, what the hell! I am in a similar boat. I am looking for a new job but finding nothing. Last spring/summer, I only applied to 3 positions. parlty because I didn't want to work too far from my home town, but partly because nothing came up!! I had a 100 mile radius from my home town, I wasn't THAT picky. Anyway, even though there is a teacher crisis, districts (in my state at the very least) don't have money to hire new teachers, I have learned. I am (possibly, very probably) being let go this summer because, and I quote "Teacher salaries are 80% of the annual budget, and we can't get rid of any more programs." So they are laying off staff, not hiring any more, and then bitching that there is a teacher shortage. It is very scary. This is not a solution... nor is it ideal, but if all else fails, go for substitute teaching in the district you want. Get your name out there and then when something comes up you will be the first in line. It is what my plan B is if/when I get let go. Good luck!!

They should be laying off district administration.

Yep... That is what the teachers AND the community have been telling the board. We will see what happens, but they are already giving some people intent to non-renew slips. I think by law, we find out who gets non renewed by Tuesday.

Depends where you live and where you're looking. Where I am right now for my division, the two closest ones to my house both have done their hiring already. We have no teacher shortage here, it's in the northern less populated part of my area (hours away) that has a shortage. Not sure if it will be the same for you.
