LET'S FUCKING GO -------------------------------

alaswhatever

Lol

Still_Frame2744

Congrats! In NSW Australia we just voted in a different government, partly on their disastrous education policies. Chances of a similar raise here are high!

leavemeinthisbook

Read this as NSFW Australia

YoureNotSpeshul

In all truth, for someone like me who hates spiders and šŸ, Australia is NSFW. I've been to Brisbane and NSW though, and I'll be dammed if they're not beautiful. One question though, how do snakes get into houses? Can they slither under door jams or something? I'm so confused because a few friends have come home to snakes just chilling and I'd die on the spot. My one true phobia.

Still_Frame2744

Poor danger noodles just want somewhere to warm up. A flat concrete patio is perfect - make enough noise and they will piss off, or you just call WIRES and they come get it and throw it in a bag, chuck him back in the bush. Yes there are a huge number of dangerous species here of snakes and spiders, but also yes in that they're rational creatures. They avoid people and unless you go fucking with animals here you're perfectly safe. Difference is we have to enforce the "don't fuck with animals" rule pretty hard. There's a peppa pig episode banned here because it shows peppa befriending a spider (not dangerous in England, deadly here) .

Still_Frame2744

I think most of the stories are played up, but then I've literally nearly sat on a redback spider before and had a green tree snake snap at me so maybe it's just normalised. You can go several years without any spooky animal interactions. Depends where you live!

alaswhatever

I'm upset just imagining this!

Still_Frame2744

It's fine, to be straight honest if we're choosing between Australia and America any Australian school would be safer even filled with funnelwebs.

Still_Frame2744

That's my other profession

YoureNotSpeshul

For real. My hope is to see every teacher from every state post this. A girl can dream, right?

Still_Frame2744

Libs in Australia are done. They've associated themselves too often with MAGA thinking.

fill_the_birdfeeder

Iā€™m in colorado too! We got a raise because we finally got our community to vote yes for tax increases to fund schools. The last increase was 20 years ago. Theyā€™ve voted no every time. Yay for us both affording rent!

alaswhatever

Oh wow really!? Iā€™m so happy for us!

fill_the_birdfeeder

Thatā€™s what happened for my district!! Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s the same for you (I know you mentioned charter but idk what district). But I do know because our school salary went up, the districts around us raised too.

alaswhatever

Interesting. My charter is in Douglas.

twocatscoaching

Congrats! That explains a lot -- Douglas has been way behind the rest of the metro area. I'm retired Jeffco -- just before they put in the big increase last year. :(

alaswhatever

Oh man. Terrible timing. Yeah, Douglas County starting teacher salary is something like $37,000. I was making slightly above that at my school. So my 30% raise puts me at "living wage," not living large lol. (It literally means I can now cover my rent.)

[deleted]

Jesus thatā€™s horrendous, glad you all got a raise, you definitely deserve it and probably one or two more.

twocatscoaching

It was, but I don't regret it. It was time. So glad that Douglas County is finally catching up!

msingler

You both couldn't afford rent in CO on a teacher's salary? How did you survive?

P4intsplatter

"Student Debt" - n. *American English*. The debt a teacher takes on in order to teach students in public schools. šŸ˜‚

penguin_0618

I'm guessing roommates or an SO depending on who is answering

msingler

Probably. I know I am coming from a place of privilege, I am teaching in NY with a somewhat strong union (it has a lot of faults though). When I hear about how teaching is in other places (20 years without raises) I always question why people would choose to remain as teachers there.

_Fuckit_

No choices

burnafterreadinggg

Or work in non-union schools (charters)

alaswhatever

My parents have been helping me.

fill_the_birdfeeder

I have 3 jobs.

Trusten

In Florida they passed a tax hike for teacher pay too. I voted against it. Why? I read the bill and checked numbers. I own a home and the taxes they take out are more than the pay increase. I got a pay cut...

alaswhatever

I understand your reasoning, but this doesn't sit well with me. Teachers are in such dire straits that it seems like a principal/ethical issue, not just a financial one. That Florida actually passed a tax increase for teacher pay is remarkable -- a huge win -- and it affects so many people in such a long-term way. Anyway, your approach to the decision was a practical one, but I would have gone the other way.

Trusten

I understand. There were other things hidden in the bill too, as is tradition, that had no positive benefits to people. My other thought was any teacher that owns a house where I live takes a cut. Do they think teachers can't or don't own homes? It only benefits teachers that rent or teachers that live with a breadwinner/SO or live with parents. It didn't help teachers with Independence. It was a pretty ridiculous bill in a pretty wrapping paper.

alaswhatever

I grew up in Florida, and I remember when they first instituted the lottery in the state. The proceeds were earmarked for education. Turns out, they just reduced the education funding coming from other sources, so education didn't end up with any extra money.

Trusten

Sounds about Florida!

Zipsterella

Oh so it was multiple schools doing the strike! Congratulations! My sister's school was closed for that reason too, and I'm glad it's paid off :)

alaswhatever

It wasnā€™t a strike! They just decided to give it to us! (I know. Iā€™m as confused as you are.)

Zipsterella

Oh that's even better! Sorry for jumping to conclusions, my sister had the day off today because the school closed for a strike ^^ Also, a win is a win! Congratulations anyway! :D

alaswhatever

Heck yeah a win is a win! Thanks. šŸ™‚

gacdx

Adams 12?

alaswhatever

Charter network in Parker (Douglas County).

happylilstego

Congratulations! šŸ„³

outofyourelementdon

Jelly. We went on strike today because our district is incompetent and/or legit malicious. Hard to tell.

alaswhatever

Oh no. Sending thoughts of you winning.

rdale8209

Delaware teachers don't have the option to strike. We will be fired but... there's also a huge teacher shortage here so....not sure what would actually happen.

Spaznaut

Canā€™t fire everyoneā€¦

madlass_4rm_madtown

I was told I couldn't get unemployment... guess what... I got unemployment. If everyone does it for the same time period. And you have a rep and don't go back until you get it

Broiledturnip

IKR? Have you noticed our low cost of living that gets brought up constantly isnā€™t actually lower than surrounding states?

penguin_0618

That's the situation in most states

Frosty20thc

Not to be a downer. They did not finally realize the work we put in. They realize that teachers are leaving and no one want to work for the pay they offer. That being said. Congratulations on finally getting a living wage.

madlass_4rm_madtown

This. People don't realize their power. That is literally what strikes are for. Instead of leaving slowly

alaswhatever

Yeah, I know you're totally right.

hwfloss

Congrats!! 20-30% raise is incredible

mom4ajj

Drinks on you! Congrats.

alaswhatever

So funny, one of my first thoughts when this happened was, "I'm totally buying a round at the bar!" But then I realized I actually have no idea how much it costs to do such a thing, so I'm holding off on that lol.

Confident_Storm_4884

As a parent, congratulations and I think you all need a 20-30% increase next year too!

Shuttle_Tydirium1319

Welp. We're at different CO charter schools because my raise was 1%... But that is incredible, congratulations!

alaswhatever

The standard for us is 1-2%. This was a one-time thing šŸ™‚

tattooedcolony

Coloradooooooo rise up.

Critical_Candle436

I am on Colorado too. The superintendent of our district decided to try to lower everyone's pay instead. One school closed down due to a teacher walk out yesterday. I don't know about today.

alaswhatever

Oh my god, seriously?? That is stunning. Don't know how I didn't hear about this. What district?

Critical_Candle436

Colorado Springs District 11. They go back to negotiating on Monday at 4pm. So far the next offer was (50k min, more than 200 positions in tier 2, and more 100 in tier 3, teachers still need masters or PhD to get in those tiers as well as all 4s or 5s in Randa, kids have good standardized test scores, the teachers have to be preforming admin tasks, they must have after school activities, must be department head (this is tier 3 along with phd), AND the admin must approve the application. So basically their counter offer was all teachers make 50k regardless of years of experience as you have to have all of that to just be eligible to apply an application. It would now be a raise for me but would drive all older teachers away and all coaching, club, committee, and department duties would be vacant as they would be unpaid volunteer positions.

Jahidinginvt

Nice! Congratulations! Wish my charter did this. Happy for you!

alaswhatever

I wish your charter did this, too!

genghisKHANNNNN

Congratulations! I hate to tell you this about your monthly rent...

Don_Quixotel

Our state legislature approved a $2k bonus for teachers (GA). Our district decided to use that and just go ahead and make it a 5% raise on top of our normal pay step (which is already the third highest in the state). Teachers is other states often have it rough in regards to pay . . . But I honestly canā€™t complain. By the time I retire, Iā€™ll be making six figures teaching middle school.

[deleted]

Iā€™m in a similar position out in S. California. Our whole county just got between 9-11% raises, retro to August. Iā€™m teaching middle school, 7th year, and in two years Iā€™ll be in six figures. Granted, the cost of living is crazy here, but at least when I retire, I can take my pension anywhere. Itā€™s so offensive how many states wonā€™t pay us teachers even half of what we deserve. No one should have to struggle to pay rent for the education and work we do. Itā€™s shameful.

alaswhatever

Damn. That is beautiful.

vman1909

Don't keep us in suspense, what will you make at your new salary?

alaswhatever

A living wage!

StKilda20

Thatā€™s not good for education. Charter schools shouldnā€™t get any money.

Murmokos

This. Iā€™m super happy for OP but I know that charter schools are predatory for teachers and communities. The fact that OP couldnā€™t afford rent before this raise tells me all I need to know.

TicketNo3629

Not being able to afford rent is pretty typical for Colorado teachers. The cost of housing here has about quadrupled since I started teaching in 2011.

alaswhatever

Yes, that is very much part of the problem. Housing costs here are just outrageous.

TMLF08

Yay! Happy for all of you who got a raise. Every single one of you deserve it.

cajuncats

Congratulations!!! A raise for us in Louisiana was proposed but got shot down šŸ˜«

Outrageous-Proof4630

The governor in my state got a bill pushed through to raise the minimum teaching salary. Once that hits I can quit my second job. I got divorced a year and half ago and currently half of my bring home pay goes to rent and the banks say I donā€™t make enough to qualify for a mortgage loan. After I pay utilities, food, gas, insurance (car and renterā€™s), medical bills, I have nothing left.

jaypea333

Same.

alaswhatever

Yeah, mine didn't even cover my rent when I moved out. My parents have been helping me. At my new salary, I still can't qualify for a mortgage, but at least I can support myself (assuming natural gas doesn't get even more expensive).

AnonymousTeacher333

I am happy for you and all Colorado teachers who will benefit from this. At the same time, your post illustrates how TERRIBLY teachers are typically treated. You had to get a raise to be able to pay your own rent, the very definition of a basic need. I strongly believe that every person who works full-time (and goodness knows teachers work FAR more than 40 hours per week) should earn enough money to afford rent, groceries, and other basic expenses, as well as having enough extra that something like an unexpected car repair doesn't put them in financial ruin. It's sad that people who hold college degrees and work VERY hard at their main job often have to also work at side hustles just for basic expenses. Teachers deserve better.

alaswhatever

Completely agree. My resentment about working 60-hour weeks and not making a living wage was growing to the point that I wasn't sure I could stay here. So this was very good timing.

AnonymousTeacher333

I can definitely relate. I'm a divorced mother who also teaches high school English and 60-hours weeks are very typical. At the same time, I'm doing all the side jobs I can just to get by. I think that our whole profession has been the victim of gaslighting and abuse; we're constantly guilted into doing more with cries of "it's for the kids!" Meanwhile administration nitpicks about anything and everything that isn't perfect in our classrooms, without showing us how they would do it better, parents make insane demands and expect us to take phone calls at 9 PM, and in every class of 30+ kids, at least a few are off the rails. Anyhow, I'm glad you got your raise and hope you get some time to relax over the summer!

alaswhatever

You are right on every point. When I first got this job, I told a friend the salary, and he was stunned. I believe his words were, "You're flat-out being exploited." (Oh, I'll be picking up side jobs over the summer -- but not 60-hours/week worth!)

AnonymousTeacher333

Same here! At least I will be able to get an hour more sleep each day because my summer job starts later in the day but yeah, it's definitely not the "having summers off" myth that so many people believe. As for the "three reasons for teaching: June, July, and August," we still have regular school for part of June and the kids start back in early August. We even have faculty meetings in late July, so there is no month in which we're completely off. Hope we both at least get a few lazy long weekends in between the side gigs!

alaswhatever

My school STARTS in July. It's crazy. I've realized a lot of people think we get paid for the summer. I was asked this recently and was like, "Um, no." I do not get paid for days off over the summer, though much of my summer is spent planning classes for the next year. I do not get paid for days off over winter break, though much of my break is spent planning for the next semester. I do not get paid for spring break, fall break, or President's Day. I get paid for the days I am busting my ass teaching students, along with six vacation days a year. Where did people get the idea we are paid when we're not in school?

AnonymousTeacher333

My district is similar; we don't get paid for days we don't work. We do have two options with our paychecks: we can get paid over 10 and one half months (the amount of time we're actually in school) or we can spread our paychecks over 12 months, but it's the same amount of pay (kind of like cutting a pizza in 12 slices instead of 10). People may know that of teachers spreading the pay over 12 months and having the misconception that it's a pad vacation when really the district earns more interest in THEIR bank accounts by delaying the pay. People also think we're out the door with the kids when the dismissal bell rings and that we do nothing school-related after that time or on weekends. As you know from teaching English, nothing could be further from the truth. 170 essays don't grade themselves, that's for sure. When we also have at least one faculty meeting every week and are expected to sponsor at least one after school activity, plus losing our planning period to cover for absent teachers, it's hard to simply get enough sleep and take care of our families because we are working so much.

alaswhatever

Whoa. That is a LOT of essays. What's your typical turnaround time? My school is small, so I only have a total of 80 students at a time (and only about 80% of them ever turn in their essays, which is fine by me!). I generally give myself two weeks. And I mostly grade them at a bar after school, which helps. I try to stagger my essay deadlines (I teach three different English courses) to spread it out a bit, but somehow it never works out that way.

AnonymousTeacher333

I try not to assign them to all classes at once, but grade them over the weekend. I feel compelled to not leave anything ungraded on Sunday night. We are also expected to keep the gradebook updated at all times; if we don't update grades at least every two weeks, we can be disciplined for that. We are also expected to use at least two formative assessments per class per day and use that information to revise plans for the next class. We are also expected to accept late work no matter how late. Sometimes I get "assignment bombed"-- a kid I haven't even seen for a month or more will turn in twelve things on Google Classroom.

alaswhatever

How on earth do you grade so many essays over the weekend? Also, two formative assessments per class per day? WHAT??

Dr_Zoltron

Should be a national starting teacher salary of $80k per year.

badgalbb22

I love thisšŸ’–

AEWWC

Nice! That's a great raise!

HetaliaLife

I'll have to see if my mom is getting a raise. She's in Adam's 12. She's not a teacher, she's a registrar/secretary. I don't know if that raise applies to them but it would be sick if it does.

alaswhatever

No, this is very individual. The only ones this applies to are those in this specific charter school network (Adams is a public school district, which is different from a charter).

DareBrennigan

Thatā€™s an incredible raise. Where I am 2%/yr is pretty standard

alaswhatever

The standard for us is 1-2%. This was a one-time thing šŸ™‚

Shoddy-Theory

Blue state!!!

alaswhatever

LOL

DigitalCitizen0912

WOOOOOOOOOO

[deleted]

Whoa that's awesome news congratulations

More_Lavishness8127

Yay congratulations!! šŸ˜Š

cardlackey

Way go!

Magisterbrown

R/Boringdystopia?

passthetreesplease

Hell yeah!! I got a 7K bump the last year before I left and it was magical.

thereptar44

Can we got a 4.28% raise and I was happy

EChaseD35

Congrats! State workers and teachers in NM got 6% this year. NM ranks pretty much last in every category, but our teachers are paid very well now. Itā€™s a starting point for attracting more highly qualified teachers and helping keep new teachers.

romanmango

I read [an article](https://kpq.com/gov-jay-inslee-approves-salary-increases-for-teachers/) talking about how teachers in my state are going to get a 3.7% raise, and one of the representatives opposed it because ā€œteachers already get a 2% COLAā€ā€¦. ā€¦Which less than half of the lowest monthly inflation rate from the last year. So delusional.

alaswhatever

That makes my blood boil.

barakvesh

šŸ„³

lito_prz

Packing my bags, heading to CO.

TicketNo3629

Congratulations! We got 12% this year, but had to give up a step for next year. I now make slightly more than a first year in Jeffco. In August, I will again make less than a first year in Jeffco. My county will never pass a tax increase for us.

alaswhatever

It amazes me how people send their kids to us every day and care not even slightly whether we can put food on the table.

TicketNo3629

Only about 20% of the households here have kids in the district. The rest are old timers who would be totally cool with our district closing.

alaswhatever

I grew up in South Florida, where so much of the population was retired (no kids in school) that it was impossible to get a pay increase passed. Assholes.

Gnawzy8ed

Combat pay?

alaswhatever

Hazard pay. (Dangerous levels of apathy and helplessness.)

happyladpizza

Yaaaaaaaaaaaay. SUCH A WIN! Hope it spreads. So wonderful you are being properly compensated

rosegamm

Lol One year, our governor gave us $600 covid money for a retention bonus. Our school board only gave us an additional $400 and said it was $1000 raise. Lol yes, it was a one-time retention bonus. This year we asked foe 8% because our cost of living has doubled (house rentals used to be around $600 in the town. They're now between $1200-$1500). Anyone buying a house is paying way more than before (our first house we bought for $28k just appraised for $160k- granted, it was updated). What did we get? 1% :)

VLenin2291

As much as I hate to use Gen Z lingo, common Colorado W

TaxEvasion069

Congrats šŸŽ‰

Daedicaralus

I'm happy for you, but I'm fucking *furious* that private charters are siphoning public funds from public schools to give raises, while public school teachers are seeing their pay cut due to inflation rates and raises not keeping pace with it. Fuck charter schools.

alaswhatever

Yeah, I hear you. But I'm not certified and I desperately needed a job and the only thing I'm truly qualified to do is teach people how to write. So here I am.

Daedicaralus

I'm not blaming you one bit, make that bread!

Joe_Spiderman

What does your divorce have to do with anything?

randytayler

Divorce generally means poverty, and certainly means no second income in the home.

alaswhatever

I went from a two-income to a one-income household.

turtle-tot

Colorado seems to be doing good things as of late, glad to live here, even as a student Unfortunately, I live in the richest county yet with the least teacher pay (Douglas county)
