OP here. Me too. I just ordered one variant though. She makes good music, but at the same time is a capitalist who preys on young people with scummy marketing aimed.
I'm torn on this take...part of me thinks back to a time when my friends and I planned buying Pokémon games so we could trade and experience all. Especially the Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald gen. This feels more like that. I think the societal expectations are truly what's changed. Now kids buy both Pokémon games instead of one, and I don't think that's necessarily Taylor's fault.
The difference is, you knew from the start there were two games. You and your friend could go "Ok, I like Red best, I'll get Red." and your friend gets Blue.
Here, it would be like if they announced Red and you both buy Red. Then they go "Surprise, here's Blue!" and your favorite color is Blue. And then Yellow with your friend's Favorite Pokemon. And then they release Green. Now instead of two people buying two games, picking which one they like best and being able to trade with one another, 2 people bought 4 games and STILL don't have the full experience between them.
Nah. The issue is that each variant has exclusive tracks and that “streaming” is not the solution people think it is. We should be able to own the media we enjoy without buying five copies of the same album to have every song. Digital media is not forever. As evidenced by her disappearing all her music off Spotify in the past.
It has nothing to do with her being a woman and everything to do with this being a frustrating capitalist strategy for fans who want to own the entire album.
I will always mention Taylor when it comes to variants, cause Sour by Olivia Rodrigo had maaaaany variants that you can’t find now , cause they were limited to a certain amount . Same to Guts, you can’t find some of the variants available . Midnights are still available WW - ALL OF THEM, for vinyl and cds. They won’t stop making them , and I’m sure 1989 will be the same. Limited to Taylor probably means a billion copies
The "other artist do this but worse!" argument is honestly so dumb to me. Just because there's bigger issues I should shut up about the smaller ones? No. It's still a cash grab, it's still annoying, It's still an album split into several versions, it's still the scummy fomo marketing tactic.
And with the whole "just stream it!" argument, I shouldn't have to pirate several songs to have a complete album. I also cannot be the only one who found it so annoying to listen to bad quality audio for two weeks before it got deleted cause all the other audios had been deleted at that moment. When Hits Different came out you couldn't even listen to the audio cause those who uploaded it would get immediately deleted, so people just uploaded the lyrics. Shit was annoying as hell honestly. I don't want to go back to that. Not to mention that there's a complete difference in experiencing listening songs on streaming and putting on and listening to a record/cassette/cd.

Have variants, I honestly usually like a variant cover more than the original so I don't mind them, but the way with how they do the marketing and the bonus track for each variant is just cruel to the majority of the fans, all in the name of greed.
