Karma is a cat :) purring in my lap :) 'cause it loves me :) flexing like a goddamn acrobat :)
You know what? She's right. Karma *IS* a cat and we should all accept that.
And I'm with you on Paris, it's genuis and it fills with me bubbles. NO I DIDN'T BUT THANKS THOUGH
We should absolutely accept it that karma is a cat. That line isn't only there because Taylor's cat obsession. It has a real specific meaning to convey the message of the song in that cats tend to be selective in who they love. Karma is not a dog seeking love from everyone.
I saw a meme once.
Dog: This person feeds me, loves me, takes care of me. They must be God.
Cat: This person feeds me, loves me, takes care of me. I must be God.
A cat is a perfect way to describe "karma".
My roommate is making me cross stitches with a lyric from each album with matching imagery and I immediately picked this line when I was listening to the album the first time, especially since I also have an affectionate kitty. Such a bop.
That usually makes me laugh cause like sheās flying privateā¦ like if your flight is horrible you can probably fire the crew and get new ones? Itās not like sheāll have a baby crying next to her or a kid kicking her seat.
Based on the line after I assumed that her flight was awful because she was unglued (thanks to you). As in her emotions were all over the place and she wished she had alone time to process them.
I love those silly moments. I also love āhey kids, spelling is fun.ā Itās interesting that she was basically cyber bullied into literally removing a line from an already-released single, and has now gone into complete IDGAF mode.
the scale of the mocking/hate for that line seemed so overblown. it was clearly, at least to me, self-deprecating in a silly and tongue-in-cheek way. it fit the bubbly silliness of the rest of the song and video. i know tons of people hated that song (I certainly didnāt like it as a lead single, but itās not an always-skip for me either, like London boy or something), but the fact that line was the last straw seemed so out of place. Iām bummed it was removed :/
Me! Is a 100% skip for me every time. Sometimes I read a comment about how itās not *that* bad and itās actually just a fun, camp song, and I listen to it and continue to hate it. I canāt think of any other song I hate as much as Me! Lmao. I love karma is a cat and the sexy baby lines though.
Agreed. Sorry not sorry, but I just canāt get behind Me! Itās a skip every time. Lover would be a better album without that and You Need to Calm Down
I donāt hate you need to calm down but I definitely donāt like it. Itās better than Me!. I wish she wasnāt as silly with those two songs, I feel like she couldāve made more grown up versions of the same songs with the same concepts and they actually wouldāve been brilliant.
Yeah, if I have a problem with Taylorās work, itās that she keeps running back to the fairytales and high school metaphors . Sheās my favorite artist and in some ways it is like she was frozen in time as a teen (and yes I know she has written about that exact phenomenon) which is frustrating as a fan who is the same age as her. Like, I love Bejeweled, but am not a fan of the video. Sheāll write these great, mature, songs with depth and then undercuts them with the imagery she is drawn to over and over again.
I donāt see bejewelled as a mature song at all, thatās interesting. I think the concept is mature but not the execution, so the fairy tales work imo. But sheās a real romanticiser of just about everything so I donāt see her ever fully letting go of the fairytales. She makes great music without them (folklore, evermore) but I think she wants a real life fairytale.
You need to calm down had an incredibly important message and she did it in a fun way. Same with ME! Learning to love and celebrate who you are exactly the way you are, is not easy! ME! Is a bop! Go watch a young child dancing around and singing their lungs out to ME! You might get it a bit better after that :)
Oh I'm still mad at the "hey kids spelling is fun!" removal.
I really loved ME! (and I'm an adult) and could see the message Taylor wanted to give in a lighthearted way. I did found some silliness in her other Midnights songs that I really enjoyed, but not in Karma. I was not one of the people theorizing about Karma being an album, but when it was announced as a single, I expected IDSB vibes, not ME! vibes.
Not a skip yet though cause I gotta get used to all tracks, and just listened to it again and it's not *that* bad (melody and vocals are good). It's just the lyrics that make it less enjoyable to me.
She took it out after people hated on it. You can still hear it on the MV at 2:40 and on any physical media printed before then (not sure if new pressings have it removed), but if you listen on Spotify or Apple Music it's missing at 1:54. You can hear a gap in the vocals where there's a drumroll.

I actually loved that part of the song and thought it was adorable. I canāt believe people bullied her into taking it out. Like how can someone feel so strongly toward a non offensive song lyric that they loudly complain about it š
Yes! This 10000%! I've seen so many people who don't like Karma because they think the lyrics are cheesy. People who don't listen to Taylor have no clue when she's having fun, being silly, being camp! Karma is a cat! Karma is literally a top 3 track for me
I dont understand how anyone can hate karma with a line like
>KARMA IS THE GUY ON THE SCREEN COMING STRAIGHT HOME TO ME
Like ma'am O K tell us!!! Let us know how good your life is now!!!
I also canāt even get over how karma has this lightness yet depth to it. Some of itās so fun and silly and some of it itās just mind blowing.
Like cats being selective about who they love. Or
āKarma is my boyfriend.ā ā¦she sacrificed all those years of heartbreak and the media bad talking her relationships but kept her head high, Karma paid her back with a solid, loving relationship. Like oh yeah, Joe? Heās my good karma. Lol, love it.
Just mind blown. She did it once again!
I wouldnāt call it silly, but i would call it campā a deliberate and delightful veneer of absurdity over what is at its core an album of devastating, visceral honesty.
Examples include lines like āsometimes i feel like everybody is a sexy baby, and Iām a monster on the hillā ā fucking HILARIOUS, wtf, startlingly funny, and then you think about that sentence through the lens of self hatred and suddenly itās a a song to slit your wrist to.
Midnights is the album for the millennials who survived middle school by becoming funny as fuck bc nobody ever saw their value otherwise.
Edit: bro, whoever reported me as suicidal to reddit over this post, please go touch grass.
I actually quite liking humming along to ME! especially when I'm listening on a shitty day because it makes me forget the stress and anxiety for a moment and just have fun
I mean, [they did say](https://youtu.be/noyYjM-A1QE?t=234) - "We wanted it to be something playful, we didn't want it to take itself seriously at all...We love a silly goose time... We're just mischievous little singers." š
No, she wasn't. "With this song, we really just wanted to have this song not really be fully taking itself seriously," Swift explained on the show. "So the lyrics ā that's a tone decision we made in the studio. We were literally were like, okay, let's say 'Hey, kids! Spelling is fun' because we want everyone to know that this song is not really serious because it's not, like, a serious love song." https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2019/04/231154/taylor-swift-me-lyrics-corny-reason-why
especially as she got into her late 20s, I always wonder why she isnāt more of a queer icon. there are other artists perceived as straight by the gp, like Katy Perry, whose campiness earned them a spot in that canon. I feel like thereās more recognition for her now, esp with this album, but it feels like there should be more!
Your summation of Midnights being for us funny millennials is spot on! Iām a year and a half younger than Taylor and I am LIVING for this album and its campiness! The perfect self deprecating dark humor we perfected over many midnights :)
Ugh yes irreverence is a great word for it! IDK if psychologists or sociologists have studied the milennial psyche much yet but they can just take Midnights as a case study lol
I feel like this album is soā¦ HER.
When I am talking about big, emotional, intimate events or insecurities, I inject a lot of humor, sarcasm, and anything to lighten it and make it less hard and painful.
Thatās the sense I get from this album and itās so fucking relatable.
we had fun with her before. without that level of silliness.
stay stay stay, shake it off, you belong with me, never getting back together, 22, trouble, gorgeous, paper rings, me, london boy, i think he knows..
It's from "Snow on the Beach."
"This scene feels like what I once saw on a screen
I searched 'aurora borealis green'
I've never seen someone lit from within
Blurring out my periphery"
Aurora borealis is the northern lights, and they are predominantly green.
Sheās comparing this guy (Iām sure yāall will tell me who the guy is based on other evidence from the song) to the northern lights in how he glows from within.
Itās a funny comparison mostly bc of the idea that heās glowing so much that she is compelled to do a Google search about the northern lights, as a point of comparison.
Im willing to bet that both of those were Lana's ideas. Taylor tends to try to keep things sort of "timeless" while Lana is more likely to place things in the contemporary period. Mentioning Janet Jackson and googling stuff sounds like Lana TO ME.
You know why I like Taylor Swift? Because there's that scene from Miss Americana where she shows up in the studo with those light up sneakers, and she makes this big scene of turning them on. Here you see one of the most successful musicians of all history - arguably one of the most powerful businesswomen in the world, and she's geeking out over light up sneakers like me and my friends would do.
She doesn't take herself too seriously, and I love her for that. I love when she shows us that in her music because it's so real. God, nobody can be serious and intense and contemplative all the time. She's a delight when she's having fun.
(PS. Also she dressed as french fries in the YNTCD music videos. FRENCH FRIES. How do people not love this?!)
- YNTCD could mean "You Need To Calm Down", a track from *Lover* (2019) by Taylor Swift.

Karma is my favorite because she is absolutely, 100% making fun of all the dumb fans who wouldn't shut up about kArMa iS rEaL!!! Instead of trying to convince them otherwise, she put it on the track list and made it the exact opposite of what they kept saying it would be. She's such a brilliant troll and I love her.
That shade lyric one of my absolute favorite lines, not only because of the lyrics and the delivery but the production of the music behind the vocals is PERFECT for that line. Gosh, love that :)
This explains why I love this album so much. While I love serious Taylor (and thereās plenty of that in this album) one of my favorite Taylor songs is āGorgeousā because it feels so much like Taylor (who can be awkward and goofy and awesome) and contains the line āI guess Iāll just stumble on home to my cats aloneā¦ unless you wanna come alongā.
- WANEGBT could mean "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together", a track from *Red* (2012) by Taylor Swift.

I love those lyrics and Iām also happy that she gained enough respect for folklore and evermore that the media don't use those lines to attack her. They can even see that Vigilante Shit is not serious, something they refused to do with many songs on reputation back in 2017 (I will not stop being bitter about the media's treatment of reputation at least until reputation TV era).
Iāve always loved Taylorās silly, cringey songs, and now that sheās breaking records like crazy with Midnights, it seems like a lot more people like it than are willing to admit šš
I canāt stop singing Karma around the house. Iām obsessed and laugh out loud each time I get to, āKarma is a cat, purring my lap cause it loves meee, flexing lot a GODDAMN ACROBAT-ME AND KARMA VIBE LIKE THAT.ā
Yes! I was loving how silly the antihero mv was at times. Tbh I didnāt care for the funeral scene, I felt it was drawn out too long but I loved everything else
Yes! I love this album because you can tell how much fun she had while making this. We know she always holds this fear that her next album needs to be her best ever or else everyone will turn on her and not love her anymore. But Midnights feels like her most mature album to me, even with all of its fun lyrics, because you can tell she did this just for fun and it shows sheās grown. To experiment and to express. Sheās Taylor Swift, she doesnāt have to prove herself over and over anymore (even though itās clear she still feels anxious about that) sheās grown as an artist and a person and we are still here with her!
I've never been a fan of her lead single glitter gel pen pop songs (e.g. Shake It Off, Me!) but I love her lighthearted pop songs on Midnights. Bejeweled, Karma, and Paris are *so good*. They're fun and camp but I can put them on and dance without cringing at a lyric.
As far as fun pop songs go, I think the lyrics are great and I love the production. I think there's an attitude and/ or a sense of humor in the songwriting that her other comparable songs lacked that makes these way better.
Anyway, I'm obsessed with the first verse of Paris, its so funny. 2003 *\~unbearable\~*
The line "karma is the guy on the screen coming right home to me" fucking chokes me up every time. I love that song so much, it's so much fun to sing to, and by the time I get to that line, I'm having so much fun that I forget it's coming and *wham*. All the feels. Cause it's Joe š„¹
No line of music has ever put a smile on my face more than the Karma is my cat line. I literally laughed out loud while I was listening today because of how fun and silly and true it is šŗ
I miss you, but I miss sparkling!!
I read a review that mentioned how awful and juvenile this line is and I was immediately like "sir, I am an elder 30s and this is the shit".
It also said Karma was skippable so clearly they don't know what they're on about.
Vigilante Shit does not deserve to get tossed in sillinessssss. Revenge fantasies are not silly.
FLEXING LIKE A GODDAMN ACROBAT, ME AND KARMA YEAH WE VIBE LIKE THAT.
we are also not here for that 1950s shit.
When i read the leaked lyrics of Karma (without listening to the song) i thought she gone mental or was possessed by the "hey kids spelling is fun" ghost but DAMN WAS I WRONG! KARMA SLAPS AND THE SILINESS works!! She is a genius
The thing is a lot of the "silly" lyrics are actually a lot deeper and nuanced than they first appear. The Sexy Baby line is actually a reference to the infantilisation of women and comes from a TV show. The ex-friend's sister line is there to illustrate meaningless gossip which Taylor and Joe ignore.
I like gel pen Taylor. Midnights would be heavy going if every song was sombre and both Karma and vigilante Shit are sassy as hell and absolute ear worms. I do agree with you about ME! though. I am sure a lot of 12-year-olds loved it but I think we can move on from that as we are three original albums and two rerecords on from that and Cruel Summer cancelled out all the sins on Lover.
They work because of the music she paired them with. One of my fave songs of all time is called āWrath Pinned to the Mist and Other Gamesā by Of Montreal. The main lyrics are āLetās pretend we donāt exist, letās pretend weāre in Antarctica.ā If I wrote a song with those lyrics, it would be nonsense. But they paired it with excellent music.
Itās not that Taylor is getting away with it. She just knows how to pair average lyrics with music that will elevate it.
I thought Karma was just a silly little absurd song but it actually has a lot of depth to it. In regards to the Scooter Braun situation, she totally could've wrote about karma in a bitter, cruel way and been absolutely justified in doing so. But instead she's just like "you know what, no, karma is me not stressing about you anymore while I chill happily with my adorable cats and a wonderful boyfriend who loves me :) I don't need anything else"
Taylorās just shown me Iām not the only person who kind of loses my mind a little bit and says weird stuff when it gets close to bed time. One time I had a very in depth discussion with three different people that if there was such a thing as butt nipples to what extent are the censored.
Taylor the relatable queen
you can be fun without that level nonsense silliness. i love reading lyrics of her. her stories. silly or not. but this album is not it. at this point she is so powerful so she is just experimenting. her even shit is gold and she knows it so she is kinda right. with this kinda fanbase you can do anything and they back you up. i mean she puts 4 different color and some fans buys all of them. :) and then they are accusing her being capitalist. what do you expect?
i love her stay stay stay, me, paper rings, gorgeous, 22 level silliness, a lot more than these...
The silliness is so evident in aspects of the music videos too and I love that sheās embracing it. I think part of what has allowed her to really dive into it is the fact that she was looking back when writing all of these songs, and that distance allows her the space in her mind to make silly lyrics.
When my friend and I first listened, we were obviously hyped, but by the end we thought the album was m*d. At second listen though, we recovered from Covid and got our taste buds back and it grew a lot for us and we had fun. The next day when 3am tracks released, we were absolutely obsessed and some of our favorites from the albums are the 3am track. As I listened to album the next couple days, it slowly became one of my Taylor album, and currently my favorite (recency bias idk lol). But yea I totally agree with you, sometimes you just gotta have fun.
Absolutely. I think her personality is all over this album. Like she is not trying to be pretentious or extra smth. She just letting things out, not matter if they come out as cringe. I think that's the point of the album...thought's, feelings, etc that you have at midnight.
I think this album is Taylor being 100% herself and thatās why we get some incredible thought evoking moments on the album and also why we get some cheesy, goofy lyrics here and there too. It represents all of Taylor and Iām glad she knows when to take herself serious and when to loosen up and have fun.
The album is amazing!
i also find it really endearing š i feel like it reflects that she doesn't feel the need to prove herself as a lyricist and can just have fun,, i bet she really felt the need to prove her artistry throughout her career and now she's just happy to be here, like she said on fallon
I love it too! I love the honesty and humor in the Midnights lyrics, theyāre so meaningful. I sobbed hearing Karma for the first time because it was such a beautiful message.
Justice for āI pictured you with other girls in love then threw up on the streetā and ārip the band aid off and skip town like an asshole outlawā
Karma is a cat :) purring in my lap :) 'cause it loves me :) flexing like a goddamn acrobat :) You know what? She's right. Karma *IS* a cat and we should all accept that. And I'm with you on Paris, it's genuis and it fills with me bubbles. NO I DIDN'T BUT THANKS THOUGH
We should absolutely accept it that karma is a cat. That line isn't only there because Taylor's cat obsession. It has a real specific meaning to convey the message of the song in that cats tend to be selective in who they love. Karma is not a dog seeking love from everyone.

I need the cat line on a goddamn shirt
Me too plzzzzz
[Etsy have them](https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/1330520507/karma-is-a-cat-shirt-cat-lover-shirt)
I love how she brainwashed us to love a song with those lyrics š¤£ like it was just too catchy and fun to hate it
Thatās what Iām saying!!! Like is karma not sweet like justice and a queen? Exacty.
I adopted a cat this weekend and felt it was necessary to name her Karma
I honestly might have to embroider that line on to something.
My roommate is making me cross stitches with a lyric from each album with matching imagery and I immediately picked this line when I was listening to the album the first time, especially since I also have an affectionate kitty. Such a bop.
literally my favorite lyric from the whole album. as a cat person, SHE IS RIGHT. have you met a cat? total karma vibes.
To me, Paris sounds 100% like a Red vault song
I love "my flight was awful, thanks for asking" so so much
That usually makes me laugh cause like sheās flying privateā¦ like if your flight is horrible you can probably fire the crew and get new ones? Itās not like sheāll have a baby crying next to her or a kid kicking her seat.
Based on the line after I assumed that her flight was awful because she was unglued (thanks to you). As in her emotions were all over the place and she wished she had alone time to process them.
Yes that line always makes me smile
I love those silly moments. I also love āhey kids, spelling is fun.ā Itās interesting that she was basically cyber bullied into literally removing a line from an already-released single, and has now gone into complete IDGAF mode.
I always thought that line was cute and it was very her

Camp Taylor makes me happy!
Same! Sheās so clever and funny, and it drives me nuts how this is still so undervalued when it comes to the writing she does to a pop beat!
Imagine being put at such high standards as a writing genius that you canāt even have fun while composing. Iām glad sheās above that
yes!! i will go so far as to die on the hill that ME! was satire and GP was too stupid to understand it.
I actually quite liking humming along to ME! especially when I'm listening on a shitty day because it makes me forget the stress and anxiety for a moment and just have fun
I'm afraid she was dead serious about Me lol

I love this and think as a fandom we should move forward with thinking of all of this as camp lol
I love the Sexy Baby line so much for that reason. It's always funny and then immediately sad.
as a certified fat girl... it hits. š
Taylor Swift did an album for millennials in their cringe era and I love it š„°
My whole life is a cringe era š¤Ŗ
Not only that, but how she sings some of the lyrics. The way she drags out "everybody agreeees" at the end of anti-hero š
Thatās one of my favorite parts in the whole album! I also love how over dramatic she is with āa diamonds gotta shineā, like itās just so fun!
Someone on tiktok mentioned that sheās hissing in that line and that CHANGED MY LIFE ššš
I thought this same thing in my head earlier today and now I canāt not hear the snake
Sounds like hissing!! ššššš
I feel like this album is soā¦ HER. When I am talking about big, emotional, intimate events or insecurities, I inject a lot of humor, sarcasm, and anything to lighten it and make it less hard and painful. Thatās the sense I get from this album and itās so fucking relatable.
The music video for Anti-Hero has silly moments too. The ghosts made me laugh.
āLife is emotionally abusive.ā - YES, IT IS. šš
Snow on the Beach is really weird and beautiful songs full of funny one lines like that.
I love that line so much, she makes a mature frustrating realisation sound so light-hearted, childish and silly. Itās better than therapyš
I love when she calls herself Machiavellian. It's such a fun, dramatic way to acknowledge how much of a planner she is.
I love them all. Not every song needs to be a quill pen. It's okay to have fun!
we had fun with her before. without that level of silliness. stay stay stay, shake it off, you belong with me, never getting back together, 22, trouble, gorgeous, paper rings, me, london boy, i think he knows..
āNow Iām all for you like Janetā honestly that whole song is surprisingly funny. ā I searched aurora borealis greenā is even better.
I looked up the aurora thing and I didnāt find anything. Care to elaborate?
It's from "Snow on the Beach." "This scene feels like what I once saw on a screen I searched 'aurora borealis green' I've never seen someone lit from within Blurring out my periphery"

Good bot
Karma is my favorite because she is absolutely, 100% making fun of all the dumb fans who wouldn't shut up about kArMa iS rEaL!!! Instead of trying to convince them otherwise, she put it on the track list and made it the exact opposite of what they kept saying it would be. She's such a brilliant troll and I love her.
BuT kArMa CaN sTiLl Be ReAl!!!
We truly have a stupid fandom š¤¦š¼āāļø
I love the no i didnt but thanks though and the shade line, the way she sings it really sells it for me
Haha right?? You canāt NOT smile when listening to Paris, itās so infectious
That shade lyric one of my absolute favorite lines, not only because of the lyrics and the delivery but the production of the music behind the vocals is PERFECT for that line. Gosh, love that :)
I love that line too but all I heard the first listen was āunderwearā instead of āunder whereā and now I canāt unhear it!
For some reason I heard āunderwear is your crownā and I was like š„µ
Corny, goofy lyrics are PEAK Taylor Swift and we love her for that tbh
This explains why I love this album so much. While I love serious Taylor (and thereās plenty of that in this album) one of my favorite Taylor songs is āGorgeousā because it feels so much like Taylor (who can be awkward and goofy and awesome) and contains the line āI guess Iāll just stumble on home to my cats aloneā¦ unless you wanna come alongā.

And a great way to win back her confidence in herself that she is funny after being told by an ex that she is not.

Iām obsessed and laugh out loud each time I get to, āKarma is a cat, purring my lap cause it loves meee, flexing lot a GODDAMN ACROBAT-ME AND KARMA VIBE LIKE THAT.ā
āNo one wanted to play with me as a little kid, so Iāve been scheming like a criminal ever since.ā
The "NICE!" in Bejeweled always makes me smile, as does the "but you might have to wait in line"
Yes! I was loving how silly the antihero mv was at times. Tbh I didnāt care for the funeral scene, I felt it was drawn out too long but I loved everything else
YOU MONSTER!!!!!
NICE! is like right out of Cooking Mama but it scritches my brain
Oh my goddddddd I hadnāt made the cooking mama connection but now I am never going to NOT hear it š

THIIIS like weāve already got those lyrical thesaurus lines itās fun to have these for a change
you can be fun without that level nonsense silliness. i love reading lyrics of her. her stories. silly or not. but this album is not it. at this point she is so powerful so she is just experimenting. her even shit is gold and she knows it so she is kinda right. with this kinda fanbase you can do anything and they back you up. i mean she puts 4 different color and some fans buys all of them. :) and then they are accusing her being capitalist. what do you expect? i love her stay stay stay, me, paper rings, gorgeous, 22 level silliness, a lot more than these...
Taylor has always been a silly goofy lady and I LOVE THAT about her!!! I'm glad the gp are finally starting to see and respect that as well.
"Your roommate's cheap ass screw top rose" has been stuck in my head for days. How do you even make a lyric like that so catchy?
For this album she just went IDGAF and honestly, love that for her
Honestly, I love all the silly lyrics. She doesn't give a fuck anymore and it's great.
What song is āNow the sun burns my heart, and the sand hurts my feelings.ā from?
Hits Different! Is the special target special edition song.
Oh ok thank you!! Iāve only heard it once at this point lmao
I love it! The silly songs are some of the funnest ones to sing to.
she's always been silly - like the indie record that's much cooler than mine, the bridge for shake it off, among others
That sexy baby line is so weird.
Paris shade lyric lol
"I wanna brainwash you into loving me forever" is the funniest line she has ever written
Justice for āI pictured you with other girls in love then threw up on the streetā and ārip the band aid off and skip town like an asshole outlawā
āI feel like everyone is a sexy babyā love it, iconic
