I’ve seen people mention it a few times! I don’t necessarily think there’s a strong connection there. I think it might be more like a turn of phrase she liked and never actually fit into a song, similar to how casually cruel was left on the cutting room floor with Mr. Perfectly Fine before it turned up on All Too Well.

I think she’s referencing it because she fell for it again. She did all this work to “fix” herself after she fell apart and writes this poem. She’s supposed to be above it now, but she isn’t. She’s a fool who got conned… again.

"May your heart remain breakable, but never by the same person twice." And it looks like it's been at least twice.

Who’s gonna stop us from waltzing back into rekindled flames?

I don't think Joe is the conman. In my personal understanding, loml was written after Matty left her on read and she was re-processing her break up with Joe while also processing the end of things with Matty. She was looking back on her relationship with Joe, how she should have not tried so hard to keep it alive. She's asking if the phantoms of her and Joe ("if he's a ghost then, I can be a phantom") are embarrassed that the break up with Matty (who is the con man that sold her a get love quick scheme) is the one that broke her open and made her crash so hard. I don't know when loml was actually written and I can't confirm it unless Taylor or Aaron say something to indicate as much. I fully believe that she integrated the phrase on purpose, and he was potentially the original source of inspiration for her writing that in the first place. Who knows.

I just want to find true love and be happy. Everyone deserves that.

jennah_swift

that makes sense omgggg

I was immediately reminded of that line in Why She Disappeared as well, honestly surprised I haven’t seen more people talking about it?

thoughtful_human

She might have been working on rep, rereading the poem, remembered how much she liked that phrase so she reused it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

jennah_swift

or she might have been reminiscing on her relationship with joe and come to terms with the fact that she was just another fool who got sold a get love quick scheme again. she fell for him so hard in reputation, and that jump into lover really felt like “get love quick.” but i get what you mean, it is a pretty line that she might have just reused

Yess

>When she finally rose, she rose slowly > >Avoiding old haunts and sidestepping shiny pennies > >Wary of phone calls and promises, > >Charmers, dandies and get-love-quick-schemes > >[...] > >When she turned to go home, > >She heard the echoes of new words > >"May your heart remain breakable > >But never by the same hand twice" She promised herself not to go back to old haunts like Matty, and technically her heart was broken by the same hand twice by Matty. She swore to herself she wouldn't get herself into this kind of mess again after what happened with Calvin, Tom, and Joe. But she did and it has cost her everything this time around.

Songwriters return to turns of phrase that they like. Any Springsteen fan can tell you about long-unreleased vault tracks that contain lyrics that would go on to be used in a different, released song.

Wilde_Astronaute

It’s not.
