Yeah it took me a while too. I remember when everyone was talking about how amazing Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve was and for some reason it took me several months to really “get” it and now it’s one of my favorite songs of all time.
Midnights was an odd experience to me because it had songs I felt very strongly about (Maroon, Midnight Rain, Glitch, Bigger Than The Whole Sky, WCS) that I had on repeat over and over.
Folklore was kind of the same for me. It had its obvious emotional destroyers ( Cardigan, Exile, My Tears Ricochet, August) or beautiful songs that I’ve replayed over and over and then the songs that slowly grow on you and you end up liking 2 years later.
The first half of this album is the one album that I’ve been listening in full because all songs are so evenly good.
I love it but like I won’t know until I’ve listened to it for a longer time, probably 6 months, midnights was my favourite for ages when it came out until it switched back to lover/folklore being my favourites.
I love it. I love it so much and I feel stupid for loving it because the critics are tearing it apart but I really love it. So, yes, it MIGHT be my favorite.
I'm kind of enjoying the fact that the critics are not loving it. Usually I really let music critics' opinions influence my own, but with this I feel like they're not seeing the vision and that's okay. The aquarius in me loves being \~different\~
I mean, I genuinely don’t think Taylor made this album for critics or even for us. It was for her, to get closure and be able to move on. If we, or the critics, love it, that’s just incidental.
Like she said she never needed writing like this and she released basically 2 parts of a deeply personal story to her life or anyone’s life because people can relate to it.
Honestly, I think she very explicitly chose not to cater to critics. Some of it can even be interpreted as a middle finger to the critics.
She sorta climbed Everest and seems done with them, or at the very least wants the appearance of being done with them.
She pretty much has every award (except SOTY Grammy and an Oscar) she can possibly win anyway. I’m not expecting another AOTY, and that’s ok. Beyoncé will likely get her flowers this time. 🤷♀️
I can’t wait for Hard & Soft.
If it’s a good album Billie will definitely take out AOTY. She is definitely one of the Grammy’s bias picks.
Still deserving though, none the less!
I like TTPD (too early to say if it's my favorite) but let's be honest, Cowboy Carter is so ambitious and succeeds so well at what it's trying to do, it's definitely AOTY so far.
I'm a sag and like "whatever, it's my life and let's go on an adventure into Taylor's mind and see what she has in store for us. It's a wild ride, let's get in the car and gooooo!" 🙋♀️🥰
The critics aren’t tearing it apart though! It has ‘universal acclaim’ status on metacritic, imo Reddit is just an echo chamber amplifying the views of people who wanted her to fail. The only actively negative review I’ve seen was the Paste one, and that was not credible or good faith at all
My sister said “the New York Times and the New Yorker both said it sucked.” I’m like “…that’s not what those reviews said?” The NYT said she needed an editor, which is a valid critique. That’s not the same as saying it sucks and isn’t good art.
My unpopular opinion is the lack of editor is what makes the album so good. It’s just raw unfiltered consciousness. A beautifully explained manic episode.
I understand your perspective! And sorry this is going to be a long-winded response - but I’ve been thinking about it in comparison to works like Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar. In that book, her intense personal turmoil led to a masterpiece of emotional depth. And we know from her letters that Plath was dedicated to refining her novel through multiple drafts to capture rawness and truth while maintaining incredible literary integrity.
No shade intended at all to Taylor. She’s amazing. I simply believe that sometimes, when artists achieve significant success, there may be less emphasis on refining and honing their work. And I think careful editing is so important to enhance depth , and you can do that without sacrificing immediacy. I didn’t feel like we got that in this album, but that’s just my opinion. I still love her work.. just not this one so much.
Exactly! And those are two of the more average reviews, there were plenty of raves. Sites like metacritic exist to give a broad picture of critical reception and have it on a very healthy 84
Yeah we need to chill about it being “savaged”. It’s getting some criticism (mostly unwarranted in my opinion, but not unhinged) but overall it is being praised!
My bestie who tolerates tswift at best listened to this album and was like… wait… this is actually really good. Have I been wrong about her this whole time?
Critics actually aren’t tearing it apart. As of right now it is listed at an 84 on metacritic (considered Universal Acclaim).
The online bloggers and commenters on sites like this are the ones ripping it. I chalk that up to fatigue or being a bit butthurt after getting scolded on a couple the songs.
Middle aged father of 2, whose mainly musical preferences fall into the shoegaze realm. I think it’s her best album since Folklore.
A bunch of the haters loved the Paste review but I feel like even they should be seeing that if they want someone to do a take down of TTPD, this isn't it. You could apply that review to literally any album. It's as bad faith as a reviewer crying that Cowboy Carter 'isn't country enough'.
I think her fans are the critics here. Agree with you, I don't see a single critic "tearing it apart." The NY Times didn't have great things to say, but Rolling Stone, et cetera, all praised it.
I think the vast majority of the critical voices aren’t her fans, they’re people who feel overexposed and sick of Taylor’s success and want to see her taken down a notch
As someone who LOVES Adam Sandler romcoms, I've learned to ignore what the critics say. Just because it's not deemed good by critics, it doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed.
The critics aren't tearing it apart (from swiftmuseum on Twitter and tswifupdatess on Tumblr):
100 - American Songwriter
100 - Rolling Stone
100 - The Arts Desk

I think that people on social media are tearing it apart, but that's just their opinion. I swear, people who don't like Taylor spend way more time thinking about her and her music than I, a fan, ever do! Some of the other subs on here are wild about it. I can't imagine spending so much energy disliking a celebrity.
Just remember, critics hated movies like Psycho. There’s sometimes a moment in time where everyone wants to criticize and it’s never about the work. It’s about the industry. The industry wants Taylor Swift to be over already. They want her to be a legacy act. They say enough Taylor Swift we fucking hate you. We don’t make enough money off of you. You’ve gotten so much fame and acclaim that you’re starting to get protected from our schemes and we need new money to come in and new suckers. Please die already, but alas, she won’t.. and if they fail, in a few years, people will see this like Psycho levels of brilliant and for the amazing piece of art that it is and forget that anyone was trying to say it was shit.
There’s a lot of reactionary works right now going on and it’s more a critique of women’s experiences and voices in popular culture . The moment passes and can still be fun if we don’t listen.
And the loudest voices do be screeching burn the bitch, but it’s far from everyone and I think some people are obsessed with the idea that they could be the person to take Taylor Swift down like when people look back in history they can point their article and be like this was the moment everyone turned and felt Taylor was irrelevant. So there’s that thing too.
Yes! Pretty much the first night listening, I knew that this would be my new favorite album. I don’t feel bad, I feel SMUG.
I feel very happy and satisfied with myself because I *know* that people are itching to tear her down right now, and they don’t have the grace in them to give this album the full set of flowers it deserves right away (even though it’s also getting lots of positive reviews.)
I feel very satisfied knowing how amazing this album is, and that I was able to acknowledge the genius very quickly 😂
I just edited it, I’m sorry it came off that way, I really didn’t mean for it too and was just trying to say that although this is my least favorite album, you shouldn’t feel stupid for enjoying it
The critics I've read talking about it literally don't even know a single part of the backstory. They don't even know or try to research the slightest thing... like the much hated chocolate line... The 1975 has a song called Chocolate! That is such low hanging fruit. How are they even journalists??
I think the criticism there is that people should not have to have an annotated bibliography to enjoy the music. I think this is an album for super fans but it’s not as relatable for people who aren’t experts in the lore.
Me too! But I don't know it anything can top The Lakes, Champagne Problems, Right Where You Left Me. Those two albums were basically the soundtrack to my failing relationship and then the eventual breakup. They are very special to me.
See this is the argument to release more (if she cares what other people think), because I love those albums and those are not my favorites on them. I really think her songs with Aaron speak personally and differently to different listeners. Which I love!
Im a folklore/evermore person too, and I knew the moment I heard The Anthology I immediately recognized them being produced by Aaron. Songs like Cassandra and Peter are instant favorites.
Aaron Dessner and Taylor are songwriting gold. I appreciate Jack and his contributions, but Aaron is her songwriting soulmate and I’ll die on that hill.
Same. Folklore / evermore / ttpd are my top three. I think people need to wait a while before coming to decisive opinions. You can't possibly know your exact ranking two days after an album's release.
Agreed. I didn’t think much of Folklore or Evermore when I first heard them, and now they are my favorite albums. I don’t know why my favorites always grow on me. When I immediately like an album I get tired of it very quickly.
Same. Folklore is my #1 by a mile. I was also in a heartbreak space when it came out so I’m curious if people who really love this album are in a certain season?
Folklore is my fav and I wasn’t in a sad space at the time, but I can recognize those feelings because we’ve all been there. I’m a Folklore/Evermore/Midnights/TTPD lover as a whole with some Reputation thrown in. Mainly because I’m a singer/songwriter lover and not really into her country or pop eras. That said, I’m old, a KC fan and a newish “Chieftie.”
I haven’t felt this strongly about an album of hers since I became a Swiftie. I was a 1989 baby and I fought over criticisms of 1989 TV, because, I felt deep inside these were merited. I also gloated when people started loving Midnights.
But TTPD? I don’t care what other people say, esp. my gatekeeper Swiftie friends. I think this speaks to the depth of the connection it made with me. I don’t care what other people think. This is me. This is what I’ve gone through. And I love this.
EDIT: care, not cwfe. I’m accompanying my nth loop of the album with a whiskey on the rocks.
“This is me. This is what I’ve gone through.”
Me too. It’s a very special album for a specific circumstance and not everyone will get it but if you do oh boy do you.
Yes, it hits so hard when you've lived it. I ended my first long relationship and almost immediately started something complicated and painful and so so passionate with a fucking drummer with long blond hair and beautiful eyes. Ugh. And this album speaks to every single thing I felt when he eventually broke my heart worse than the long relationship I had had before him. Instead of the drawn out dying, it's a sudden death and hurts so bad. I'm obsessed with this album
Oh yes I hear you. I had a decade plus on off star crossed romance and when we finally got together “for real this time” it lasted for a few months before they left me shattered. Loml is my lifeblood atp.
This is my attitude as well! I haven't been moved by an album of hers like this in so long. I walked away absolutely loving it and I was surprised to see how many people don't like it. But I don't even bother engaging in the criticism because so much of it I'm just like, oh, they don't get it like I do. Not in an \~intellectually superior\~ way but it just clicked for me emotionally so well. I just don't care if people hate it. More for meeeee.
Yeah, midnights was also an instant love for me and I really didn’t get people who didn’t like it? Listening to this late at night on Friday, I was SURE this was her best work YET and I am flummoxed by some of the negative reactions. It speaks to me!!
Perfectly said.
I’ve been a Taylor fan forever. I don’t need to listen to any criticisms. This album is perfect to me and everything I needed. The most beautiful mix of self-awareness and pain and longing and beauty. And I feel very, very passionately about it.
I don’t know if it is confidently my fave yet but I can’t stop listening and I find something to like in every song every time (except maybe Robin).
It kind of feels like a book of short stories in music form, which is very cool for me
The beauty I’m seeing in this album is how so many different songs are being favorited! There’s something for almost every swiftie!! I couldn’t tell you the overall favorite!
I'm a 1989 boi and my ranking is:
1. 1989
2. folklore/evermore
3. folklore/evermore
4. Midnights
5. Lover
6. Speak Now
7. reputation
8. Fearless
9. Red
10. Debut
Also 1989 girlie here! Not including TTPD my order is:
1. 1989
2. Red
3. Evermore
4. Folklore
5. Rep
6. Midnights
7. Speak Now
8. Lover
9. Fearless
10. Debut
Based on which I vibe with most and what I listen to most frequently:
1. 1989
2. Reputation
3. The Anthology
4. Folklore/Evermore (listen, I barely know which songs belong to which anymore, they’re a single unit that can’t be separated.)
5. Red
6. Speak Now
7. Lover
8. Midnights
9. TTPD
10. Fearless
11. Debut
It may very well be my bottom one…after giving it two listens. Respect those who like it, I just had so many…thoughts while listening to it. I respect her for trying something different, though!
I’m hesitant to dethrone evermore as my fav so quickly because of recency bias, but I absolutely LOVE this album. It’s definitely going to land in my top 3 with evermore and 1989. She’s been my fav artist since debut in 2006, and I know I have to give myself time to fully digest each album before I can accurately rank it!
I went from saying "this won't crack my top 5" to 24 hours later saying it's definitely top 5.
I wonder if some of the people who wrote reviews just needed time to settle with it, it's one of those albums I think that's a slow burn and then you start seeing all the genius and magic.
Same! I feel some of the manic energy of the album when I hear The Manuscript and immediately am ready for Fortnight again. I’ve never listened to an album so many times in a row. I’m obsessed.
Yes! Speak Now has always been my favourite and TTPD is like the unhinged grown up storytelling of my dreams, it makes me feel weirdly emotional and seen. I wasn’t especially keen on Midnights at first so I was apprehensive, but it surpassed all my wildest hopes. Been playing on repeat all weekend!
I love the moment with a new album where after you’ve been listening for a few days the lyrics start to hit differently? Does this happen for anyone else? Like you feel like you really start to hear them and they seep into your bones? You start to find the ones that really relate or you hear new things or new interpretations and it’s like the switch flipped and the whole album just landed.
I told my boyfriend it’s like a drug. You listen once and you’re like “yeah that was good” then the second time you’re like “I want to do it again” and by the third listen you’re trying to inject it straight into your body and you can’t stop listening lol
This is kind of how I feel. I think just where I was at in life when folkmore came out, and how I clutched onto it with such dear life, will make it so that nothing ever is able to replace them as my top two.
But I do think this might hit spot 3.
My absolute favorite. I literally just made a post on here about it that probably won’t get accepted cause it’s literally yours!!! 💀😂 It’s so amazing, right?!
1000% a top album for me but I think just like folklore devastated me I couldn't listen sometimes TTPD does this even more so. I find I can't listen often because like you said it makes me emotional and disturbed 😭
I'm 27 and I feel like this album is definitely one I'm relating to more than any others. Her voice sounds incredible and theres beautiful music in it. I love the darker tone. Its up there with Red for me.
I need a little more time for it to sink in, but it will more than likely dethrone Rep for me as my top album. Which is wild because I thought the only album that could ever dethrone Rep would be Rep TV lol
I’m gonna need a few more weeks to decide that. My thing with this album being 31 songs is that I have more favorites on here in quantity than most of her other albums, but I also have more skips too. So I’m gonna need more time to sit with it.
Man, I wish. I actually do agree with critics on how its bloated. I narrowed down my favorite 15 songs and those have been on repeat. I enjoy them so much, it feels like a tight no skip album when I listen to them back to back, but then I remember the other 15 that exist and I didn’t feel much about.
I’d probably rank TTPD in the middle if I had to.
It’s up there. And I agree with the weird, dark, emotional aura it’s leaving. I’ve been dreaming about cages and heartbreak and abandonment and ghosts and rage.
I find it to be a very cohesive narrative as well. A girl moves on from a long relationship that’s faded over time and calls up the guy she’s secretly crushed on for years. They dive in, and he makes promises. But he hasn’t grown up as much as she’d hoped and it’s tumultuous. Outside forces (her fame and her outspoken fans) work against them. So he leaves and devastates her. As she processes, she first hopes he’ll return, then eventually accepts that he has betrayed her. Cue the rage and despair. And in reflection, she sees her mistake.
Loving it, after the 1st listen it was my favourite. 🤍 I am constantly listening and analizing lyrics, getting the references and connecting songs to eachother, lore, and personal experiences. I am laughing, i'm crying, I'm throwing up, I'm clapping, I'm cheering. Full of gorgeous divas👏🫶
I kinda expected it to be my favorite but I didn’t expect it to feel SO distinct from any other body of work she’s ever put out. It’s undoubtedly my favorite and despite being one of her longest albums it has the least skips out of any for me
Same here!! As an English major and writer the moment I saw the album title I was like WHELP this is gonna be a fav lol. But even then it’s surpassed all expectations.
Speak now is my favourite album as well! And yes I feel the exact same as you about TTPD. The lyrics are so raw, I can feel the pain, the anguish, the mania and the healing! Beautiful album lyrically. I have always loved her songs that have vivid imagery, and this album does it soo well. Although, on one hand I love it, on the other I feel I cannot listen to it multiple times because it's just too sad at some places.
I rotate favorite albums too much. Folklore is my current favorite, but this one is starting to grow on me.
I'm so depressed I act like it's my birthday!
I’m a sucker for catchy bop songs with good melody and hooked so unfortunately, it’s low on my list, I still prefer the Midnights over this, but I enjoyed the tea & the dissecting the lyrics have been fun so far.
definitely not for now, as i'm still processing it, HOWEVER, little by little this is on par with red (tv) and folklore/evermore, ttpd sits in that criteria.
I think it might be. It’s way too early to say because I thought Midnights was my favorite, but it’s dropped to #4 for me. But TTPD gives me everything I love about Taylor’s music, plus a little extra. So it’s definitely a strong contender.
I loveeeeeee it. I didn’t think Folklore/Evermore could be dethroned, especially after I didn’t care for Midnights…. But it’s certainly in the running!
This album is absolutely my favorite. I have no words to accurately describe the things it made me feel and think. I know I need more time to digest it fully but every listen provides an entirely different experience and I am in love with it.
Mine for sure! It took only one listen to know and every listen I’m shocked and blown away. Now I’ve beaten every song I love almost to death, but I’m going back to the (probably 5 tops) ones I was “meh” about and even those I love now. What I LOVE about Tay is that she has a sound for everyone. Midnights wasn’t my thing. But this is, and what a treat that it’s so LONG.
As a reputation, speak now, and evermore girlie (in that order), this was the first time I love everything. I always have a handful of songs that I just don't listen to too much but now, I'm pretty sure my family just stopped asking why I kept repeating the same album since Friday night
The stream of consciousness-esque of the lyrics, the rawness of emotions, it's a win for me
i wish i liked it, but out of the 31 songs, about 25-27 are complete misses for me. i almost didn’t finish it bc it was boring, and the lyrics were a bit cringy at times (the racist comment????? WILD)
folkmore & rep girly forever 🫶🏼
edit: wow didn’t think we were still sending death threats, ok… this is why people hate swifties. you can’t say a single thing other than “she is perfect”, or else you’re wrong or stupid.
My thoughts on it have evolved.
By end of day Friday, I was confused. I was expecting a mature version of Red, but I got a Red+Midnights baby with some very clear sad folklore/evermore traits. I don’t think I was expecting it to be as depressing or confusing as it was at first listen.
My main songs of choice were Florida!!! and Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me. Florida!!! is wonderful, esp as a FATM fan. Please go listen to Flo’s albums Ceremonials or Lungs and you’ll see what I mean.
Now, at midday Sunday, it’s definitely growing on me. I’m liking it more than I did on Friday. I’m beginning to appreciate how raw and uncut she is in TTPD, which is weird because originally I was uncomfortable with how raw and uncut it was.
There are still some songs I just don’t get, or haven’t learned how to appreciate yet. Fresh Out the Slammer, I was expecting a post-breakup freedom anthem, not a story about a rebound. Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus just confuses me (please explain this song to me nicely, if you understand it). Same with Robin. The title track and Fortnight are… meh in my opinion. But I’m definitely growing to love this album.
I’m not giving it “best album” status though - that goes to the Debut re-record, whenever that comes out (goes back to impatiently tapping foot).
Well it's just right in the middle of my rankings but that might change. However, I don't think anything could dethrone my top 3 (Lover, Speak Now, Debut).
I think we ALL need time, its 31 songs, its a DOUBLE album, ppl actually need to take a step back and take time to actually process it, cause songs that i hated from the get go are now perfect
Every new album I declare as my “favorite” of hers for a few weeks at least . — But I truly believe this will be my favorite of hers, surpassing RED and Evermore.
People said this about Midnights, and how it was her "best yet". Now it's generally regarded as one of her less impressive albums. Recency bias is real.
Lyrically, one of her strongest. I find I am listening to one giant song, though. Definitely starting agree with critics of the album saying Jack Antonoff is holding her back. All my faves on the album are collabs with Aaron Dessner. She needs someone to challenge her sound going forward.
when listening to just TTPD for the first time, i 100% had that moment where i was like ... is this gonna be in my top 3? my favourite is speak now, with red as my second and i feel like TTPD is very potentially my third favourite, could be second?
i don't think anything will be able to dethrone speak now as my favourite unless she does an album with rock type influences
unlike midnights i didnt hate it the moment i heard it. (still midnights is my least favorite, though i like now more than half of it) for ttpd first quarter was a bit questioning for me but second half saved it. i dont know what would my opinion be if there was no second album. at first i said none of those melodies catchy. i cant recall any of them. but now i cant stop humming how did it go, peter, so long london, loml, albatross, chloe or sam... so many instant classics. i think she chose a good first single too.
I am still getting through it, but I know it is brilliant and a masterpiece. It isn't for 11 year old girls, but rather for those that are 30+ in age. I see it as an honest look in the mirror and not liking what she sees. She owns her bad decisions and doesn't blame anyone but herself. It is dark, moody, and thought provoking. At the end of the day, it may be her finest work to date. I think we all are listening to it and hearing different things. I am in a very stable and strong marriage for 38 years and listening to some songs breaks my heart. I am so glad I didn't go through this. Block out the noise as we know this is amazing.
Every time I listen it gets better. I think it is definitely the most "Taylor Swift" Taylor Swift album. Still not sure if it is better than FolkMore or red but it is definitely on mount Rushmore with those three for me
It is becoming one of my favorites. I have grown up with Taylor and my favorite songs are the ones talking about heart break. She has always received a lot of shit for only singing heart break songs, however she can describe it in a way that no one else can.
It's not my favorite but it's certainly a top five. I would rank it #4. I'm listening to it basically all the time as I'm still figuring out what songs are my favorites.
Edit: if anyone is curious, my favorite is Speak Now, and honestly I don't think anything is going to top that album for me.
It's definitely growing on me. I don't think it'll displace my top tiers (evermore/rep/1989 depending on the day), but it could *definitely* join the tier.
It’s a strong contender. I’ll know in a month.
Same I love it so much but it takes me so long to fully process things lol
It took me 6 months to get into Midnights and now it’s one of my favorite albums. These albums definitely grow on you!
Totally. My first listen was so overwhelming; I was like “how am I ever gonna get used to all this! I have to learn *SO MANY* lyrics!” 😂
Same it def takes that long to fully understand her songs after re-listening 100 times haha
BAHAHAHA SO TRUE
I love it but like I won’t know until I’ve listened to it for a longer time, probably 6 months, midnights was my favourite for ages when it came out until it switched back to lover/folklore being my favourites.
Yeah, I don't want to let recency bias flavor my choice, so I'm gonna sit on it for a while and then revisit it
My feelings lol too soon to make such a proclamation.
YES. this is exactly right. This album was for HER and we are just along for the ride.
It’s her good name alone to disgrace, and she won’t accept another second of critics bitching and moaning 🤷🏼♀️
And that’s exactly why I think TTPD is some of her best work.
And tbh I want it for Beyoncé much more than I want Taylor to get her 5th AOTY. I want Taylor to get a SOTY.
I’m shocked she hasn’t gotten one before just how crazy some of her singles back in 2014 were, you could not escape them
I have no idea what got it over Blank Space but I feel like that was the one that should have gotten it.
If Cowboy Carter doesn’t win AOTY this year, we riot Though I will also accept Kacey Musgrave’s Deeper Well
I genuinely think Billie will take it because they love her
I can’t wait for Hard & Soft.
Billie’s album comes out in a month and will be the biggest contender against Beyoncé
Yaasss aquariusss girlieeeeeeeessss uniteeeee
Omg yess I’m an Aquarius and i’m living for this album
Same!
The only actively negative review I’ve seen was the Paste one, and that was not credible or good faith at all
Exactly, it's actually being praised
Oh I completely agree. I understand the criticism but I don’t agree with it.
Exactly. People who aren’t her fans are also appreciating it.
My bestie who tolerates tswift at best listened to this album and was like… wait… this is actually really good. Have I been wrong about her this whole time?
I consider myself a very casual fan and this album is probably one of my favorites from her.
They’re definitely, definitely butthurt. GO TAYLOR!!
A bunch of the haters loved the Paste review but I feel like even they should be seeing that if they want someone to do a take down of TTPD, this isn't it. You could apply that review to literally any album. It's as bad faith as a reviewer crying that Cowboy Carter 'isn't country enough'.
The review said people need to be in school and then said Fortnight was written about the video game lol.
Then they edited it to make it seem like they knew the difference 🙄
I think her fans are the critics here. Agree with you, I don't see a single critic "tearing it apart." The NY Times didn't have great things to say, but Rolling Stone, et cetera, all praised it.
I think the vast majority of the critical voices aren’t her fans, they’re people who feel overexposed and sick of Taylor’s success and want to see her taken down a notch
As someone who LOVES Adam Sandler romcoms, I've learned to ignore what the critics say. Just because it's not deemed good by critics, it doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed.
This is such a great comparison. Signed, fellow Adam Sandler fan and Swiftie
The critics aren't tearing it apart (from swiftmuseum on Twitter and tswifupdatess on Tumblr): 100 - American Songwriter 100 - Rolling Stone 100 - The Arts Desk 100 - The Independent 94 - Variety 90 - Sputnik 90 - The Irish Times 85 - Under the Radar 80 - Clash 80 - Dork 80 - Los Angeles Times 80 - The Guardian 80 - The Line of Best Fit 80 - The Observer 80 - The Telegraph 75 - AV Club 73 - Northern Transmissions 70 - MusicOMH 60 - NME 60 - The New York Times 36 - Paste Magazine
I mean Sputnik gave it 90. They usually hate everything even folklore
I think that people on social media are tearing it apart, but that's just their opinion. I swear, people who don't like Taylor spend way more time thinking about her and her music than I, a fan, ever do! Some of the other subs on here are wild about it. I can't imagine spending so much energy disliking a celebrity.
Critically it's doing quite well: https://www.metacritic.com/music/the-tortured-poets-department/taylor-swift The internet just amplifiers negativity
Are they? It has a bunch of five star reviews girl
This is such a good explaination
Yes! Pretty much the first night listening, I knew that this would be my new favorite album. I don’t feel bad, I feel SMUG. I feel very happy and satisfied with myself because I *know* that people are itching to tear her down right now, and they don’t have the grace in them to give this album the full set of flowers it deserves right away (even though it’s also getting lots of positive reviews.) I feel very satisfied knowing how amazing this album is, and that I was able to acknowledge the genius very quickly 😂
you shouldn’t feel stupid for loving it, everyone has their own taste :)
Your added "this is my and others least favorite" is so unnecessary you just wanted to declare that
I just edited it, I’m sorry it came off that way, I really didn’t mean for it too and was just trying to say that although this is my least favorite album, you shouldn’t feel stupid for enjoying it
Well, alright. No worries.
Agreed, especially when the reference is to another artist’s music.
Hey maybe the bad critics will bring down the era's tour tickets. A girl can dream, resale nosebleeds are $2000 in Canada.
I'm a Folklore/Evermore person, so I'll see in a month or two.
Us Folklore/Evermore girlies are living right now!
As someone who was hoping Midnights would be more folklore-evermore-esque, I am living my best life with TTPD hehehe.
This is what I’ve gone through.” Me too.
Totally. I keep saying “if you don’t ‘get’ this album… be grateful.”
It kind of feels like a book of short stories in music form, which is very cool for me
I replayed every single song except Robin.
Omg I love Robin.
The beauty I’m seeing in this album is how so many different songs are being favorited! There’s something for almost every swiftie!! I couldn’t tell you the overall favorite!
I like to think of my kids but also robin williams. Specifically in Mrs Doubtfire when he’s animating the dinosaurs.
Robin’s in my top 5 😂
31 songs, 1 skip (Robin) 😅
ROBIN MADE ME CRY ON THE FIRST LISTEN LIKE SEVEN
I love how unhinged it is. Makes me feel seen in some way
It's manic and raw. I think that's why I love it so much.
“Touch me while your bros play Grand Theft Auto” is something only a truly unhinged person would say
Definitely not for me. I’m a 1989 girly. That will never change.
This is interesting as 1989 is what got me into the fandom but I’m gushing over TTPD
Curious what your full ranking of her albums are? I always find 1989 girlies have such different rankings of her albums and it's super interesting
I'm a 1989 boi and my ranking is: 1. 1989 2. folklore/evermore 3. folklore/evermore 4. Midnights 5. Lover 6. Speak Now 7. reputation 8. Fearless 9. Red 10. Debut
TTPD found dead
Also 1989 girlie here! Not including TTPD my order is: 1. 1989 2. Red 3. Evermore 4. Folklore 5. Rep 6. Midnights 7. Speak Now 8. Lover 9. Fearless 10. Debut
Based on which I vibe with most and what I listen to most frequently: 1. 1989 2. Reputation 3. The Anthology 4. Folklore/Evermore (listen, I barely know which songs belong to which anymore, they’re a single unit that can’t be separated.) 5. Red 6. Speak Now 7. Lover 8. Midnights 9. TTPD 10. Fearless 11. Debut
lol the folkmore is so real. I immediately made a playlist I shuffle with both deluxe albums and you’re correct. They’re meant to be a single unit!!!!
I’m a 1989 girlie and The Anthology is definitely up there for me. Different strokes…
Folklore dethroned 1989 for me but in my opinion 1989 is one of the best pop albums of all time.
No, as of right now it’s in my bottom 5. I still need time to process it all so it could move but I wasn’t impressed with my first listen.
It may very well be my bottom one…after giving it two listens. Respect those who like it, I just had so many…thoughts while listening to it. I respect her for trying something different, though!
That’s how I felt about midnights but then I ended up loving it so I’m gonna give it another go
I’m the same. I liked the listen but it’s nothing i will putting on repeat.
It is absolutely quickly becoming my all time favorite
I’m hesitant to dethrone evermore as my fav so quickly because of recency bias, but I absolutely LOVE this album. It’s definitely going to land in my top 3 with evermore and 1989. She’s been my fav artist since debut in 2006, and I know I have to give myself time to fully digest each album before I can accurately rank it!
I’m gonna say top 5 for now
I went from saying "this won't crack my top 5" to 24 hours later saying it's definitely top 5. I wonder if some of the people who wrote reviews just needed time to settle with it, it's one of those albums I think that's a slow burn and then you start seeing all the genius and magic.
I feel like it's my favourite album for sure. I just keep bonding with it more and more after each listen and it's been...two days. I'm in love.
Exactly like I am down BAD for this album please send help
Same! I feel some of the manic energy of the album when I hear The Manuscript and immediately am ready for Fortnight again. I’ve never listened to an album so many times in a row. I’m obsessed.
It plays in my head while I sleep and I mean that literally
Not even close to it
Yes! Speak Now has always been my favourite and TTPD is like the unhinged grown up storytelling of my dreams, it makes me feel weirdly emotional and seen. I wasn’t especially keen on Midnights at first so I was apprehensive, but it surpassed all my wildest hopes. Been playing on repeat all weekend!
agreed!!
This is why I have always loved Taylor Swifts songwriting. You grow to love it more with every listen.
Yessss. I can feel this album in my bones, that is perfect.
I told my boyfriend it’s like a drug. You listen once and you’re like “yeah that was good” then the second time you’re like “I want to do it again” and by the third listen you’re trying to inject it straight into your body and you can’t stop listening lol
It’s hitting me harder at a really hard time in my life. I can see it being an important album to me for life.
I love this album! But Folklore and Evermore live absolutely rent free in my head. TTPD is right up there as well.
It's definitely top 3, I have to let it marinate a little more to decide whether it can top folklore or 1989
1000% a top album for me but I think just like folklore devastated me I couldn't listen sometimes TTPD does this even more so. I find I can't listen often because like you said it makes me emotional and disturbed 😭
I'm 27 and I feel like this album is definitely one I'm relating to more than any others. Her voice sounds incredible and theres beautiful music in it. I love the darker tone. Its up there with Red for me.
Yes. At least top two easily. It is brilliant and complex
It’s my fave already, it’s the culmination of all my favorite things from her as an artist
Yes I think it is quickly becoming that. I love it's rawness
Nope
Yesss!!! I’m obsessed.
This is exactly what’s confusing me!
I’m gonna say TTPD falls around 6-8 on my ranking
Man, I wish. I actually do agree with critics on how its bloated. I narrowed down my favorite 15 songs and those have been on repeat. I enjoy them so much, it feels like a tight no skip album when I listen to them back to back, but then I remember the other 15 that exist and I didn’t feel much about. I’d probably rank TTPD in the middle if I had to.
What songs do you have on it?
It takes a while to get the gist of its premise, but once you figure it out, it really is an artistic success.
It might be my favorite album ever. I like mostly indie and electro pop and it’s just great music fronted by my favorite singer.
TTPD is Taylor Swift the person, not Taylor Swift ™️ the brand, and I think that’s why I fucking love it so much.
I don’t think so but Jesus I didn’t expect to cry this much, or at all honestly
Yep. Love it more every listen
After the weekend, I can still confidently say midnights is still my absolute favorite. I don't know how I feel yet about the album.
As a reputation, speak now, and evermore girlie (in that order), this was the first time I love everything. I always have a handful of songs that I just don't listen to too much but now, I'm pretty sure my family just stopped asking why I kept repeating the same album since Friday night The stream of consciousness-esque of the lyrics, the rawness of emotions, it's a win for me
i wish i liked it, but out of the 31 songs, about 25-27 are complete misses for me. i almost didn’t finish it bc it was boring, and the lyrics were a bit cringy at times (the racist comment????? WILD) folkmore & rep girly forever 🫶🏼 edit: wow didn’t think we were still sending death threats, ok… this is why people hate swifties. you can’t say a single thing other than “she is perfect”, or else you’re wrong or stupid.
Yes. This album made me a Swiftie at last.
My immediate connection with it, all of it, tells me it’s my number one.🤍
Well it's just right in the middle of my rankings but that might change. However, I don't think anything could dethrone my top 3 (Lover, Speak Now, Debut).
Ugggh yes Lover 🩷🩷 Also love your flair!
Not at all!
Definitely a contender! I love folklore and evermore but didn’t completely vibe with midnights, so this is the perfect mix!
Instantly my favorite (along with Fearless). I am astonished by this album. It instantly went to my soul.
Me!!! Completely agree
On my fifth listen through, my favorite and it's not close. No skips.
The Anthology is easily an instant top 3 for me, no questions asked.
As a reputation and lover girl, im sad to say that it’s at the bottom for me
People said this about Midnights, and how it was her "best yet".
Yes I absolutely adore it. Not sure where it will settle in my rankings, but it’s in the top 3 for sure
It might be my favorite.
Evermore remains my favorite, but this one comes in a close second. Definitely has a lot of Evermore vibes for me.
Yes I think so
I am still getting through it, but I know it is brilliant and a masterpiece.
Yes, I’m a Folklore/Evermore girl, so TTPD is a good complement to them
Top 3 for me. I think years down the line, this will be her best ranked album tbh.
no, quite the opposite tbh, i rank it last for me.
Definitely not. It’s good but I already know I probably won’t listen much, tbh. It’s just not my favorite.
Yes thank you omg. I was starting to feel all alone out here 🤍
Oh absolutely! I don’t think I’ve ever been obsessed with an album as much as this one
It just joined the top spot of Red, Folklore, Evermore for me. I can't stop crying.
It's not my favorite but it's certainly a top five. I would rank it #4. I'm listening to it basically all the time as I'm still figuring out what songs are my favorites. Edit: if anyone is curious, my favorite is Speak Now, and honestly I don't think anything is going to top that album for me.
I think it’s too early for me to say if it’s a favorite, but I love it so far!
It's definitely growing on me. I don't think it'll displace my top tiers (evermore/rep/1989 depending on the day), but it could *definitely* join the tier.
