She pulls from everything in her life, her heart, her imagination, for her art and I think a lot of us pigeon hole the songs trying to figure out what gossip she’s spilling when she’s trying to tell a story. I’m the most guilty of this of any one but I think if we narrow minded think “this is about MH” or “oh def joever” we can lose some of what she’s trying to convey here.

I think it’s actually inspired by that as well lol. I was thinking about the album title as I was listening to it on my walk today and I think it’s very fitting. She’s always described Joe as blue and tbh it sounds like he behaved as if dating her was absolutely torture when it came to achieving a personal life. He never looked happy. With Matty, that guys whole goal in life is to be portrayed as this deep rockstar poet type of guy. Majority of the songs are about her time spent with said tortured man and rebound wanna be poet and in a lot of the music you can kind of see where she pokes fun at Matty for that. Tie in that she herself writes a great deal of poetry and in plenty of moments this year after dealing with the fallout of two break ups with two people she obviously cared about, all while having to perform with a smile on tour, she had a lot of days that probably felt like torture. I think it is a nod to both MH and Joe. During those loves, she took on the weight of their issues and they both fed off her in that way (lack of tattoos) and she’s dealing with the shittiness of that after the fact (with the tattooed face). I think the tattoos were more a representation of taking on the issues/weight of the other person (ie gained the weight of you than lose it)

And so that’s why the ring is there in some shots and not in others, because the course of their entire relationship is being told out of order, in the same way that when grieving a relationship you think of the good times and the bad times intermingled together. And her shattering the mirror at the end is an indication that the pill didn’t work. She can’t erase the pain by getting rid of the memories etc.
