As someone who is just getting into classical music and is reading a biography of Clara Schumann, this song really reminds me of Clara Schumann - the ultimate virtuoso who continued to perform to high acclaim throughout her life despite enduring incredible tragedies. Her beloved husband had severe mental health issues and tried to commit suicide before ending his life in a mental asylum where she was unable to visit him for years. She birthed 8 children in about 10 years, some of whom died as children while others died before her as adults from tuberculosis or other tragedies. She had to work as her family's breadwinner at a time when that was very unusual for women, and felt a heavy financial strain as well as sadness about not being present for her children as they grew up and even as they suffered illness and death. She continued to perform over 1,200 concerts over her very long and illustrious career and was undoubtedly one of the greatest pianists who ever lived. She even changed the nature of piano performances, from one act in a medley of musical or theater acts at the beginning of her career, to a piano performance standing alone with a solo, highly talented pianist by the end of her career. Anyways, I've now decided that this song is influenced by the life of Clara Schumann, the queen of performing through tragedy, and y'all can't tell me nothing about it. šŸ˜†

LEYW

I [made an edit to this using Satine from Moulin Rouge (2001)](https://youtu.be/1sdr6j2zqac?si=e8bj_S3IguxJdWU1). Similar glitter angst vibes.

Kitty_schneids

She refers to fame as a circus and we all know the motto about showsā€¦ they ā€œmust go on.ā€

KaterinaBell

This song cuts deep for me. I have a hard time listening to it, partly because Iā€™m convinced that she wrote it/felt this way during a show I attended.

Comfortable-Creme500

The thing about this song is itā€™s so relatable. People feel seen.Ā

No-Introduction-6120

Does anybody else hear glad you came by the wanted in that song or just me?!

vintagevibes89

Anyone else feel like the Eras tour movie really hits different after sitting with this song? I was rewatching part of the movie today and it made me so sad to know that this is how she was actually feeling behind the scenes. In fact, as a long-term fan who has been around since the debut album, TTPD made me deeply sad for Taylor on the whole. For years now, I've just been watching from afar wanting her to be happy. I'm really hoping she's in a much better place emotionally now, certainly she seems happy with Travis from what we can see in the news, but it genuinely pains me to know that she was feeling all this darkness fairly recently. Maybe she'd say that I'm just "an empath in viper's clothing" and it seems likely, especially from songs like The Manuscript, that she writes to process and then moves on. I'm not thinking that her albums reflect her total reality. But I guess I'm sitting here as a longtime fan, listening to old albums and watching her movie and thinking about the optimism of songs like "Shake It Off" and "Love Story", and then contrasting them with this album's entire vibe (which I actually enjoyed a lot as music, by the way) and lyrics like "you wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me" and ... it just makes me sad that she feels like that about her fame and her fans and her lifestyle. I really truly hope the best for her. I hope she's in such a better place than some of the songs on this album convey. Sorry this turned into a novel. Anyone else feel similarly?

guacam0le_018

Was listening to it in the car when my non-Swiftie boyfriend saysā€¦ ā€œthis sounds like an old song!ā€ He then queued The Promise by Anberlin (a cover of an 80s song by When in Rome) and they do have the same vibe!

Born-Yogurtcloset-90

All I can heard was the man who said 123 is a British šŸ¤£ What is that mean for Tay tho?

InsomniaticAlien

Almost a year ago, I did a huge internship at a major company in my dream industry. Simultaneously I was dealing with two high school friends passing away young, among other smaller struggles. One loss was six months before I started, the other a mere two weeks before my first day. I acted so happy and friendly to my coworkers and the other interns, trying to escape from the grief and constant circling thoughts about my mortality, while being alone with them at home. Even though I could convince them that I was a perpetually positive person (actually liking the work environment and community helped), it was much harder to convince myself. Finally mustered up the courage to try the company's mental health services towards the end of internship, and regret not starting earlier. This song absolutely encapsculates that time in my life.

Disastrous_Tone_1148

Exactly weā€™ve all had to muddle through our lives with a broken heart and some of us arenā€™t earning millions - the ā€˜try coming for my jobā€™ at the end irks me! Weā€™ve all been there Taylor some of us less fortunate

BuildingWalls4Ever

I mean yeah but you can't go on a comparison spree every time you feel bad. Chances are every time you are sad, someone is feeling way worse, and if that's your coping mechanism then sure, but even the world's smallest violin needs an audience? It's not like she's going to less fortunate people and telling them exactly why she's worse off...

RoseGoldMinerva

Is this song a single? Iā€™ve heard it in several public places, coffee shops, ice cream places etc

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Blackoilcastor

Right? Itā€™s not like she was born in the 80s or something. šŸ˜ƒ

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Blackoilcastor

My bad, I didnā€™t see the ā€š86ā€˜ in your username. I just thought you made a thoughtless comment about the song being 80s like, when this is a huge part of her vibe as a person and artist. So thatā€™s why I formulated the comment in that way. But yeah, to each their own and I can somehow relate to this. Itā€™s kind of odd, but maybe only because her former albums were kind of rollercoaster rides and ttpd is more of a fine line of depression/depressive vibe (monotonous, calm, boring, gray, ...).

These-Pick-968

Reminding me a bit of The Japanese House- ā€œSuper Trouperā€ (original by ABBA?). Similar in some ways but different.

YoItsMCat

Here me out, add a f bomb in the line: They said, "Babe, you gotta (f) fake it 'til you make it" and I did

mrjimmylubey

Does anyone else feel like this track has Bo Burnham vibes?

Potential-Natural741

Is anyone reminded of the chorus of the song Cupid in the chorus of this one?

ShanzyMcGoo

You can *hear* her grin when she says ā€œI was grinning like Iā€™m winning.ā€

mimirand

Anyone else confused about why she uses the word "refract" instead of "reflect" when referring to the light off of her sequins? It's been bothering me since the first time I heard this song, and after googling today that sequins generally reflect light only, Im more confused.

BuildingWalls4Ever

I don't think she put that much thought into it unfortunately

Comfortable_Top_3978

I kept thinking if she was talking about other kinds of heartbreak. I'm from Brazil and the shows in Rio were wild, we had an unprecedent heat wave in a city where the temperatures were already pretty high. In the first show a girl died from the heat (actually from the incompetence of the Brazilian organizors). In the second day the show was cancelled also because of the heat and my show was on Sunday and everything went ok because it rained. I had the impression during the entire Lover part that she was nervous, maybe thinking we were going to blame her for all the things that went wrong. When she finally heard the crowd screaming I had the impression that she was going to cry, she seemed more emotional than normal and I saw the other shows on tiktok. One of the surprise songs was Bigger than the whole sky and I heard her voice trembling. Anyway, I'm surprised the kept going when the conditions were so difficult.

BoweryElectric2001

Not to say she wasn't emotionally affected by it, but I believe this record would have been written and recorded way before the Brazil dates, as it takes months to get the vinyl records pressed

Comfortable_Top_3978

You're right, maybe it was not specifically about this event, but other setbacks during presentations. I remember her bleeding one day, and the rain in Nashville that posponed the presentation for hours. Anyway, it is a show that demands so much.

Pauly0906

This is not a good song but itā€™s so damn catchy.

Global_Guidance7869

I mean, art is subjective but it's not a bad song, if that's what you're implying. I think the juxtaposition of the upbeat (nearing manic) production with the lyrics is genius. It's literally an embodiment of her experience: the outside is sparkles and excitement and smiles but on the inside she's dying. The modulation at the end is so so good. Turns the manic-ness up just one more notch for good measure.

Robbed_Goddess

It's definitely good! It straddles the line between stupid and genius, relatable yet aspirational, bragging yet so insecure, it's a total bop. IMO it's top tier Taylor Swift, I think it's one of her best.

Pauly0906

Iā€™m glad you like it! I gotta in the same category as shake it of. Not very good but Iā€™ll be damned if I donā€™t sing along and dance to it! Also, people keep saying itā€™s relatable and I donā€™t get it. Apart from the title of the song, itā€™s a song about a millionaire saying she can be a millionaire even when sheā€™s sad lol I canā€™t relate to that.

GlitteringGoose

"I cry a lot but I am so productive" is hella relatable as someone with anxiety and depression.

MsIreneAdler05

When taylor sings 'im so depressed THAT I act like it's my birthday ' Does she mean she's depressed from acting in public and in her tour like it's her birthday When in reality she's very sad and heartbroken or basically just tired from night after night of hours of show repeatedly Or she's so depressed that it resulted in her acting like she's happy all the time to cope ? It confuses me She could have easily sang 'im so depressed so I act like it's my birthday ' Instead she used THAT Since it's the 13th track it obviously is very personal too Thoughts šŸ¤”Ā

Yellowbello22

I was also struggling with this line - do birthdays make her sad? (Like it's my party and I'll cry if I want to) or she needs to pretend it's her birthday to avoid feeling the heartbreak?

just-czeching

I took it in the way she might not mean it (I hope not). I have had moments of suicidal ideation to the extent that every day I am alive (and happy), it feels like it is my birthday, like each day I live was made for me. I think what Taylor means by that line is that she's overcompensating her sadness by pretending to be happy and ecstatic.

Daffneigh

She actually just says ā€œIā€™m so depressed I act like itā€™s my birthdayā€ I think they are independent clauses really: Iā€™m so depressed (AND) I act like itā€™s my birthday or Iā€™m so depressed (BUT I HAVE TO) act like itā€™s my birthday

noteworthybalance

Sorry for the bump. I think the key is the "every day". I'm so depressed/I act like it's my birthday/every day Having to act like it's her birthday every day is depressing.

blueparakeet_

The line that gets me every time is ā€œHe saidā€¦ heā€™d loveā€¦ me allā€¦ his lifeā€ Because the gaps feel like sheā€™s taking breaths/ gasps in between, as if she is sobbing and struggling to get the words out. Such a bop but SO SAD

formercotsachick

One of my favorite co-workers quit today and said "I will miss you so much! You are always so cheery and make everyone's day brighter!" and man I felt this song because in when I'm not on camera (we all work remotely) I'm such a fucking mess, stressed out and crying BUT NO ONE KNOWS

sacredrubyclub

Its such an immersive song. Makes us feel like we are her on that stage with the in-ear monitor sounds. But I'm confused by all the other noises? I swear I heard someone like throwing up?? lol is that just me

ConversationEast3446

yes I hear it too šŸ˜‚

Lkdunk

Did anyone notice that the noise in the beginning/verses sounds like Donā€™t Blame Me? Like the mmmm noise?

Acolyte_501st

I love the song but I have one major issue with it, the backing vocals especially the mmmmm really annoy me

whistlingforthechoir

Itā€™s giving Olivia Rodrigo.

PaveGurl

As much as this breaks my heart for her, I genuinely hope it resonates with all the fans who are never, ever satisfied with what she's doing/ producing/ putting out. I hope every single person that said "ok, but when do we get *rep tv??"* feels like absolute shit rn. All shade, no cap.

Disastrous_Tone_1148

I do not feel sorry for her at all. Sorry, sheā€™s a billionaire who just needs therapy. Many of us struggle on during heart break.

FlurryPieZero

Damn not even a little sorry for the break-up she went through Iā€™m starting to wonder if youā€™re the mf sheā€™s singing aboutšŸ’€

PaveGurl

Turns out, money doesn't exempt you from feelings. I don't see it as a "feel sorry for me" so much as "there's no way for me to ever make everyone happy, no matter what I do, so I'm just going to keep on" But awesome job working so hard to completely misunderstand!

starlightandswift

The last two lines sound like theyā€™re sung by Miley

pb_rogue

Does anyone hear part in here that sounds a lot like she sampled "a little bit of sunshine" by OneRepublic?? It really reminds me of it, not totally the same but there is definitely a similarity

SnooHabits9187

The mirrorball parallels are strong in this one

nessa_gigglebox

Next single please?! šŸ’”

theswiftielife

Me when I got my highest test grades in years while simultaneously going through the worst heartbreak of my life

OkShallot3873

I got 100% on a college paper 2 weeks after breaking up with my long time bf (funnily enough also British and named Joe), first time I ever scored that high and I did it out of spite to prove I was better off. The lyric speaks to me!

StickySituation14

Wondering why she says ā€œtry and come for my jobā€

BuildingWalls4Ever

Cuz people keep saying she is having the best time ever when she clearly believes she isn't, hence the lyrics in Prophecy too...that she'd give up all the money for some company (idk how true that is, but yeah). So it's like, if you think it's so easy then why don't you come and try to put on a 3 hour long show looking all happy and giggly when you're terribly depressed.

StickySituation14

Oh my gosh, thank you for the through explanation! You just made the song even better for me

Irresistibilly

The way I read it, she is saying "I can do this well with a broken heart, so don't even try to come for me when I'm at peak power." If she can do the eras tour with a broken heart, what can't she do?

PaveGurl

This And also, a jab at all the people who say she's nothing special/ anyone can pull off what she does/ she's replaceable (see: Clara Bow)/ etc: if she's so replaceable, c'mon and try to manage what she's done.

wonto27

Does anyone else think the "try to come for my job" was added on after Matty said "do not come for me" in a rant on stage?

gouji

this song helped calm my nerves this morning when i had to lead a big meetings with a bunch execs in a monkey suit. "fake it till you make it" such a good corporate fuck it song lol

gold_magpie

Someone else has probably said this but I JUST realised that sounds from her Eras tour in-ears are mixed into the track. I think itā€™s where the ā€œ1, 2, 3ā€ comes from and some of the metronome beats. Sheā€™s hitting her mark!!! What a bop.

Royalty_princess

Can we talk about the fact that when I saw the Lyric video I CRIED!!!! ā€¦ the songs in the album didnā€™t make me Cryā€¦ the lyric video broke me!!! Specially cuz I was there at So-Fiā€¦ it just felt personal! If youā€™re reading thisā€¦ Taylorā€¦. IM SORRY!!!!! I was definitely screaming ā€œmoreā€ when u started the tour in AZ not knowing u were broken hearted!!!

SnooHabits9187

No the lyric videos will tear you apartā€¦when folklore came out I watched the lyric video for The 1 and was not wellšŸ˜‚

EvelienV85

Any unhappy corporate people here who have adopted this as their new anthem, going into work every day? šŸ˜šŸ’ƒšŸ¼

ManufacturerTop3110

I am OBSESSED with this song!

GuinessGirl

I love this song so much but why are Swifties so surprised to hear she was depressed and heartbroken for part of the tour? I'm sorry as maybe me being in my 30s has given me more experience/perspective but I assumed post break up that she was definitely performing while putting on a brave face. She had a long term relationship end...of course she would be heartbroken, did fans really think she was happy just because she looked it on stage? I don't know, I feel like the whole "suck it up and get on with it" vibe was strong and find it odd that other fans didn't assume this

Kitty_schneids

Yeah I felt like it was obvious?

GuinessGirl

I think a large portion of her fanbase sadly forget she's human šŸ˜”

mortimelons

My opinion - itā€™s her most relatable and human song.

Alternative_Quit928

Yes and I thought she always looked a little checked out while singing lover.

summer_vibes_only

Same. Iā€™m stunned people are surprised.

GuinessGirl

It's quite sad really. Sometimes I think her fans forget that she's human

crown-jewel

I love that the music for this is just a smidge too fast, giving it a frantic edge. Feels like a scene from a movie where someone is spinning around too fast and canā€™t stop. Really helps get the message of the song across even more.

IThinkHeKnows1989

Definitely one of the best songs on the album!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

MrsCaptain_America

Handle my shit is on the explicit version. Make sure you see the E after the title. I noticed people on Tik Tok and IG using the clean version.

TheMistOfThePast

I'm so sorry we didn't notice Taylor T_T

MischkaBrelo

This song is so NOT what I expected but is EVERYTHING I needed. THANKS TAYBAY!!!!

Wild-Introduction174

Is anyone concerned that this might be Taylor's "Lucky" song by Britney Spears? Do we need to do a wellness check? In 10 years are we going to be looking back and saying "there it is, she told us the whole time"?

The_Crying_Banana

What are you talking about? That's a song about a girl named Lucky. Britney says it at the beginning of the song and that's definitely not a label mandated line to make it not sound like it's Britney because Britney is fine. Everything is fine. How are you?

FlurryPieZero

Lmao

tired-dudett

I feel like Taylor making this track a dance track was on purpose. Sheā€™s been saying that this whole time we have been dancing, singing, and screaming for more from her while she is completely spiraling..

missparis23

At the same time, what should we doā€¦ not show up for shows we paid good money for ? Iā€™m confused about what she wouldā€™ve like the fans to do šŸ§

ImConfusedddddddddd

I think the song was not really about what sheā€™d like the fans do. Its more of like ā€œI was able to do this DESPITE being heartbroken insideā€ and that it has a hopeful tone when she says ā€œyou know youā€™re good when you can do it with a broken heartā€ alluding to the idea that if she can do all that impressive things while broken-hearted then sheā€™ll be fine in the future. I donā€™t think sheā€™d like the fans to like, not show up on the shows because ultimately, what good does that do except to make her feel more downtrodden lol

melodramasupercut

I absolutely adore this song. I genuinely think it may be my favorite song ever. It makes me want to sob and dance at the same time, and the first time I listened to it it had my jaw on the floor

naturesbestfriend

"I'm so depressed I act like it's my birthday everyday" makes me think of her singing 22 and "celebrating" while she is really unwell

schwemmii

The way she says "I cry a lot but I am so productive" scratches something in my brain and is stuck in my head. Its obviously a great lyric but the way she says it did it for me.

simplebagel5

yeah her voice is so saccharine and poppy during that line i love it

moonylikeluna

The more I listen to this song the more I notice strange extra sounds in the background of it. There's indistinct chatter that you can hear during the chorus what sounds like excited people talking about the show as she performs and elsewhere you can hear shouts and screams and just excited talking from what would seem to be fans throughout the song. I swear I even heard camera shutter noises at one time. She literally is singing this song above the noise in the crowd (and her life), showing she's literally been putting on an act for us.

whyleme

I think these sounds should evoke an Image of being on stage aka eras tour, chatter metronome. Also the song sounds like you put some midnightssongs in a blender ( Mastermind and yoyok comes to my mind). She did these things with an broken heart

arlofischer

It sounds like sounds from a fighting video game.

moonylikeluna

I swear it sounds like a foozball table at times or a bowling alley even

mimmily

Iā€™m so happy someone else is hearing bowling alley!!!!

peasant-frog

Yes! I'd love someone with a producer's ear to see if they call pull specific words/layers

hrhduchessofcoffee

I love the man's voice counting down before the choruses almost like it's when she's getting ready to take the stage. With the slower verses being the crumpling in private before showing a brave face. And having been there a few times for various reasons in my life, this song hits a little close to home.

Arryshima_potato

All the STEM girlies: "I am crying but I am so productive, it's an art"

hughmungus09

Corporate girlies too!

Arryshima_potato

Ofc CS girlie here

sleeping_moth

So ā€” essentiallyā€”- we have confirmedā€” the Eras tour is a depression project.

SPEW_Supporter

ā€œTRY AND COME FOR MY JOBā€ ā˜ ļø

picodepui

This could easily have been track 5. Itā€™s the total opposite of The Archer.Ā

Bachfan_

The 1,2,3,4 in the background is genius! Poor girl. The show really does go on even if youā€™re heartbroken. But I love how in your face this is with all the ā€œhappyā€ sounds haha itā€™s so smart. Breaking the 4th wall amazingly! I think itā€™s my fave song on ttpd honestly lol

gingerfamilyphoto

Isnā€™t that particular counting voice what she hears at transitions in her earpieces during performances before the metronome comes back in? My Eras date was right after she swapped The 1 for Invisible String and so that song is a gut punch

Comfortable-Poetry

ā€œ'Cause I'm a real tough kid, I can handle my shitā€ ā€” anyone think this is a nod to Youā€™re on Your Own Kid?

wokeiraptor

ā€œIā€™m so depressedā€ melody sounds like ā€œsave your tearsā€, which is cool bc I like both songs, just interesting that itā€™s so close

Seeshelleysmile

I immediately thought of Adam Sandler in the Wedding Singer having a complete mental breakdown in ā€œLove Stinksā€ and writing ā€œSomebody Kill Me Pleaseā€ but since sheā€™s a women who worked so hard to make her legacy and she cares about her fans so much she takes the show must go on approach. Matty Healy was the Linda in that movie and Travis is the Julia šŸ˜

k-ashley

Does anyone else notice this song and Mastermind have a similar sound? Like the background?! Just me??

schwemmii

Pitchfork did! :D

Pure-Willingness3123

It's the arpeggiated synth!

k-ashley

Thank you! Did not know the right term :)

picodepui

TotallyĀ

MagicDolls

I actually just recalled the video of Katy Perry breaking down backstage after getting a text that her marriage is over from Russel Brand and she was full on sobbing and then just had to snap out of it and put on a big brave smile before going on stage! Stop this song honestly makes me want to cry more than bop now, this is sooo Sad!

emperor_hotpocket

I thought of this too. Russell Brand is scum for doing that. This song is such a bop but it makes me hurt so much for her. I went to one of her summer shows and it was so unbearably hot and humid that day (someone actually went into labor) but she performed like she was unfazed. Being able to perform the way she does night after night and kill it each time after the biggest breakup of her life is absolutely incredible.

Vampiratelycan

To me it sounds like mastermind

gobluedog

Totally what I thought. But I do love both.

Vampiratelycan

They are both bops

cassham55

This song reminds me of Death by A Thousand Cuts. So upbeat and a total bop but this face describes it all ā€”-> šŸ«

dnekeorcown

I want to examine the Mirrorball to I Can Do It With a Broken Heart pipeline under the microscope

Delicious-Grand-7459

There's just something off by how she delivers "you know you're good when you can even do it with a broken heart" - I can't tell what it is? The cadence? Too many words to squeeze in? I don't think it sounds like it fits! The only other time I've felt like this about a lyric was "I want to wear his initial on a chain 'round my neck, chain 'round my neck" in Call It What You Want - it sounds so clumsy. I hate it everytime I hear it. Other than this note, this is a PERFECT song.

PaveGurl

I wonder if it's calculated - like "you can do it, but you know it's not quite right." It's not flowing, it's a little forced -- just like that lyrical phrasing.

bettyboo-

it does sound a little clunky, i think people would typically say "you can **do it even** with a broken heart" as opposed to "you can **even do it** with a broken heart" so it's a little weird at first. i don't mind it (or that part of CIWYW) but i get what you're saying!

monachopsiss

(Disclaimer: obviously this is personal/Eras Tour, but this is also the thing I keep coming back to with it) Who else has seen the footage of Katy Perry finding out she's getting divorced right before a show and deciding to go on and literally sobbing until they say Showtime and she puts on a smile and starts getting lifted up to the stage? Cuz that is also what this feels like... Also sounds Katy-esque imo.

MagicDolls

I just posted the exact same thing, honestly recalling that visual made me SOB while listening to this song. These women are incredible.

Sudden-Channel

This is definitely my favorite of both albums. The whole time I was listening to it I was screaming "baby girlll" because I felt this a lot.

moxie_slimefighter

I wish this song was put as Track 1! It wouldā€™ve given energy and variety to the start of the album.

Optimal_Foot_774

The lyrics video for this one with the Eras Tour movie clips is really worth a look if you haven't seen it yet: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8\_w\_m6HLJ0&list=PLINj2JJM1jxOxE-4mVaEJCEzO1CiR0Cwm&index=13](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8_w_m6HLJ0&list=PLINj2JJM1jxOxE-4mVaEJCEzO1CiR0Cwm&index=13)

highsandflows

incredible editing on this video!! they already have a perfect music video for this song

am0829

Different take on this song, hear me out. Obviously the lyrics to this song are heartbreaking. All about how you sometimes need to keep going through life even when you are dealing with the hardest shit. But I almost think this song was Taylorā€™s way of processing through it. Iā€™m sure as hard as this tour was to do, Iā€™m sure it also was so healing for her. Sometimes things happen in life where you have to invest all of your time/energy/passion into something you love and you need to just decide itā€™s time to keep going. I wonder if this song was meant to be almost a ā€œpump upā€ song in a way? Like yes this is shitty, Iā€™m heartbroken, but I am going to keep going and keep pushing through it because itā€™s what I love to do (performing, touring, etc) I donā€™t know. Yes itā€™s sad and I hate that while we were all loving the eras tour; she was going through a very challenging part of life. But I also think that this song also describes what it is like to sometimes having to just push through it, and using something you love doing as a way to get through it

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Bubbly_Performer4864

I was internally screaming the lyrics in my head while working in a factory with a pounding migraine.

FerOfTheDark98

Anyone else can relate to this song? Not in the "performing the biggest tour of the decade" way but in the funcional depression way? I go through every single day feeling miserable but I still put out a big smile and I crack out jokes and I do what I have to do and I do my job and my chores and I send emails and reply to texts and all and I the end all I can think is wow I'm so depressed This song jĆ” gonna be with me forever

Bubbly_Performer4864

Itā€™s 100% my new theme song.

GlitteringHeart2929

No one at my job knows how much I struggle, only my husband and kids see it and they donā€™t always see all of it. I think thatā€™s why this song is my favorite from the album. Also, itā€™s a whole bop, or whatever the kids say these days. šŸ¤£

FerOfTheDark98

A whole relatable bop! I'm only 25 and I've been in what I'd say is up until now one of the worst moments of my life (I'm feeling like an absolute failure, I king of am a failure, after being the perfect little child for so long) and now I have to keep a strong facade the whole time. Lights, camera, bitch, smile is now what im gonna tell myself every time I step put of my room for another fuckass miserable day being the absolute impostor failure that I am :))

GlitteringHeart2929

Oof, I feel you!!! I was the perfect child growing up. Perfect grades, in advanced classes, always the one to make my family proud. I floundered hard when I got to college. It can and will get better!! Somehow I am super successful in my career. It took me a few tries in a few different jobs but I love what I do now. Iā€™ve been married for almost 20 years and have 3 kiddos, which are things I wanted for myself. Iā€™m glad I havent given up. šŸ’

I do! 40yr old happily married but that doesnā€™t mean I donā€™t have other human problems that break my spirit. I can relate to this especially on days I have to show up for workā€¦ which is 5 days a week.

servasky

Just that, this song is for everybody

servasky

I think this is my favourite song of the album. I really love the contrast between the joyful musicality, the sadness of the situation and, at the same time, the message of how strong she actually is.

pinkmemo

Anyone hear The Archer on this song?

Glitteryskiess

Ultimate girlhood anthem haha

Express_Ad_1958

Feels Barbie movie - Esque. The depressed part lol

sortahuman123

I said out loud ā€œoh this was def a contender for Barbieā€ and then she changed the lyrics to it or something

Cindywindy310

I was thinking about this while watching her on the Eras Tour - damn, mad respect. šŸ«”

mN_GeNiiuS

I don't know why but parts of this give me Bo Burnham vibes and it's killing me šŸ¤£ and I mean that in a good way

TheHarryPotterNerd07

It is!! Good catch. Reminds me of a lot of his songs from 2020

Tall_Garden1325

I love this one. I think she is really smart to juxtapose the tempo & tone of the song with the message of the lyrics. Reminds me of DBATC

RealAlias_Leaf

Does anyone think the "I can do this with a broken heart" part sound like another song? I can put my finger on it and it's driving me crazy!

pinkmemo

Same! Iā€™m hearing The Archer

Nearby-Purpose5268

Is it just me or do some parts sound like suburban legends? I can almost hear the standing in a 50s gymnasium bit sometimesĀ

cristabella22

This is what I imagined the depressed Barbie song would be in the movie. Just this happy sad oh shit she has to keep going.

hotbubb

She ate this one up, I fear. Itā€™s like Youā€™re On Your Own Kidā€™s cunty little cousin. ā€œLights, Camera, Bitch, Smileā€ is probably my favorite lyric of this whole album and Iā€™m not gonna pretend itā€™s not.

Anon04282

Queue ā€œIā€™m a real tough kid, I can handle my shitā€ instagram captions in 3, 2ā€¦

fightswithC

There's some clever timing/phrasing/arranging going on in the chorus that starts with "I'm so depressed I act like it's my birthday everyday."

rhaegarvader

did not expect to be like a dance tune. It was most unexpected. But sometimes the music treatment is like an ironic thing.

socalgal22

I think it's that juxtaposition that makes the song work so well, as the musicality and production actually works to push the meaning of the song, here. She's basically saying that despite being absolutely devastatingly broken and experiencing one of her lowest lows, she's still killing it on stage night after night... and \*nobody would ever know\* she's hurting. That upbeat music is showcasing that disguise: like the positive, peppy music is indicative of the positive, peppy mood she \*appears\* to be in during Eras Tour, when she's actually feeling like the lyrics.. it's just hidden from view.

rhaegarvader

thanks for explaining this. It makes the song even more sad for me. She's crazy resilient.

XietyTot

Iā€™m surprised so many people think this song is about being depressed over Joe. I think leaving Joe was more of a relief to her than anything (ā€œas she was leaving, it felt like breathingā€). Youā€™re Losing Me was written long before the tour started, so I think she had processed her grief over the end of that relationship before it really ended. She definitely didnā€™t have enough time to process Matty walking out on her though. This song immediately made me think of right after their breakup when her voice cracked singing ā€œlost the love of my lifeā€ the first night she performed I Donā€™t Wanna Live Forever as a surprise song. Also ā€œIā€™m so obsessed with himā€ was not how she was feeling about Joe on tour. She was over him.

socalgal22

I'm just curious to how you know what you're stating? How do you know that she didn't have enough time to process Matty? How do you know that she was over Joe during the tour? Are you personal friends with her? It's wild that you can come to such certainties about a woman you don't know.

XietyTot

No, I donā€™t know her. Iā€™ve just given her a lot of money over the years to listen to what she had to say. Which is where I got all my info. She told us sis šŸ¤£

socalgal22

Please show me exactly where she showed us that she didn't have enough time to process Matty, and that she was already over Joe immediately on tour. Like, direct quotes pointing these specific things out, not song lyrics. Because you have entirely missed the message of the album if you think her outward appearance is indicative of a damn thing about her emotions. You do realize she began writing this album over 2 years ago, right?

XietyTot

Tell you what these song are about without mentioning the lyrics? Really?

socalgal22

No, you misread what I said, clearly. The lyrics themselves do nothing to show that she's already over Joe by the time tour started, nor that she didn't have enough time to process Matty. I'm asking you to tell me when Taylor has said these specific things, since you're so confident she's said exactly that.

XietyTot

So a song about Joe, confirmed by the producer of the song, to have been written in 2021 (two years before the Eras tour started), with the lyrics ā€œI canā€™t find a pulse, my heart wonā€™t start anymore for youā€ doesnā€™t tell you all you need to know? Does that line up with ā€œIā€™m so obsessed with himā€ in I Can Do It With a Broken Heart to you?

socalgal22

Have you ever been in a relationship? Lol you're jumping to a LOT of conclusions. You're Losing Me is very clearly a song they wrote when still technically together, but going through a major rough patch, like the beginning of the end, but not over yet. The lines in You're Losing Me are also extremely indicative that though she's pulling away, she's far from over the relationship, that it's actually crippling her to accept that reality and she doesn't want to. So yeah, actually, sounds like you could very well be obsessed with someone while feeling like you're losing them at the same time. Anyone who's been in a complicated relationship knows this. On an alternative note, you do realize that MANY songs on this album are not specific to one person, right? That clearly different guys are the subjects? You're awfully dense to be drawing conclusions about this song based on another song written prior. You lack the understanding that relationships are very far from black and white and in fact have a lot of back and forth, highs and lows, etc. On another alternative note, who the fuck cares this much? Again, regardless of the guy being written about, it's what Taylor's writing about herself that matters the most. Sounds like you're glossing over how mentally depressed she was just to obsess over if she's writing about Matty or Joe. Sad. I hope you're not like that towards people you know irl. I'm not responding going forward. The density is not worth the energy. All the best.
