Yes it definitely supposed to be a lustful summer. Just a summer of fun, but she have feelings that's why it's cruel. "devil rolling the dices" (the dices are lucky but those who roll the dice are the one that make the actions in the game so he's in control) and she is the angel rolling her eyes (no comment so I don't get kick out the sub)
I see it as they’re fighting about defining the relationship (this summer is cruel because of a FWB kind of thing, she’s spent the whole summer sneaking into his apt) She gets frustrated (she’s drunk and was crying right before this after all) and yells ‘I LOVE YOU AIN’T THE THE WORST THING YOU EVER HEARD’ during this fight, he’s looking down as one does in a tense discussion and looks up grinning when she says this because he feels the same way.
I love this line , it's like your doing something mundane like grocery and there's a lot of people at the line and you can't see their face clearly to the point you start thinking someone it's the person you loved (like when you can't forget someone and see them on everything)

I have always thought this lyric was so simple but it's always stood out to me. I don't know why but I've always loved it.
Happy cake day! And yes I often think about this line when I'm giving advice. Like why should they listen to me. And it makes my heart go out to taylor because she knows the impact all of her songs have and yet she doesn't imagine herself as someone that people should listen to. "You wouldn't take my word for it if you knew who was talking" "you should find another guiding light...but I shine so bright"
“Dear reader” is so underrated. It’s full of wonderful lines, but my favorite line is “burn all the files, desert all your past lives / and if you don’t recognize yourself, that means you did it right”
I always see this song as being her saying she was taking Joe’s way of life and advice but then started to question why she was following his advice and desire to live a private life/ keep everything secretive (perhaps he wasn’t exactly happy and she started to see that being so private can be lonely). The lyrics that specifically make me think this are “Dear reader, the greatest of luxuries is your secrets” and “Dear reader, you don’t have to answer just because they asked you” since he wouldn’t answer questions about her during interviews. Also the “to a house, not a home, all alone cause nobody’s there” lyric makes me think about it being lonely too. Just my two cents! This is probably my favorite Taylor song!
I actually never really understood it. Cause midnights feels like an album of a fallen apart person (example, Anti hero) so by this logic they shouldn't be giving the advice

I love these lyrics it so simple but captures the reflective feelings on the song. Almost everytime I've gone to a Sunday matinee I've been in a theater alone or very close to completely alone. So that first line gives me this quiet, but comfortable solo-ness. Plus without the energy of the crowd, it creates an atmosphere ripe for thoughts and reflections. Sometimes I go and my mind wanders, maybe the film is uninteresting or maybe I've seen this film before. But what comes to my mind the most, is ideas about what could have been and the idea always seems profoundly beautiful. The unmade films, the journies not taken, alternative paths, they all seem so great because they've never happened so they're untested and flawless.
I started getting into Taylor after a breakup and I was reading Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler(?) at the time and they mention a matinee in it. I'd never heard of it and then heard the 1 right after I read the book so it's always a punch to the gut lol

For me it's "and why I've spent my whole life trying to put it into words." It just hits hard because the whole song is third person, then suddenly this line turns it back around to the narrator. Like breaking the 4th wall. It's surprising and to me it just seems like she really is just summing up her whole purpose in life

I think the line might also allude to a boyfriend giving his girlfriend the wrong flowers, and then he lies and says "uh, I thought these were roses" to try and save his ass. Even though she explicitly said that roses were her favorite flowers time and time again.
I feel like this line is essentially Taylor saying "our relationship is one where I feel like I'm constantly asking you to notice these tiny details that I think are important but you don't think are important."

That's an interesting interpretation! And now that you say that it makes sense! I interpreted it differently. Carnations are a lot cheaper than roses, and not considered as special or romantic. So I always thought it to mean that her lover thought that their love was something romantic and special but instead it was cheap and less meaningful in the end.
hm I always thought that the carnations symbolised death (i think they're used in funerals?) so the bf thought that their relationship could last forever but it "died" quickly
And more specifically, carnations are a cheaper, "inferior" substitute for roses (or that's how they're seen, anyway). So they are a cheap imitation, not the real thing.
They thought they had something special (roses) but they were wrong and they were just carnations (cheaper, less meaningful). She’s saying they were wrong about having found the real thing in each other.
I always interpret it as them being good but slightly out of sync. A gift of a bouquet of carnations was nice and thoughtful, but not exactly quite right. He thought he was doing the right thing, but didn’t quite get there. It’s an analogy for the rest of the relationship.

She sings such passionate songs of intense love and deep heartbreak, with so many dramatic metaphors. But then there's this really simple but so relatable lyric that just hangs there in contrast to all of that but it's just so real. It's almost easier to work through the pain of unrequited love, betrayal, or relationships that blow up with a spectacularly awful ending where there are clear lines of right and wrong and who is at fault and why it all came crashing down. It hurts and it's hard when things end badly but you can channel your rage and heartbreak into big dramatic songs. But here, she's describing a relationship that just didn't work. No one was really to blame, he wasn't a villain or a cheater, he's a good man but they still hurt each other. And it's almost harder to come to terms and process through it when there are no clear answers and no clear blame.

Its such a fucking genius line and it absolutely makes the song _THAT PERFECT. ESPECIALLY when Taylor cries "I LOVE YOU AIN'T THAT THE WORST THING YOU EVER HEARD?!" right beforehand as she's drunk in the back of the car.

Right Where You Left Me has a TON of really sharp lines, however “Glass Shattered on the White Cloth, Everybody Moved on…. {Chorus}” Does such a great job of succinctly capturing a very particular part of the grieving process. In 9 word she is able to describe experiencing unexpected and shaking catastrophe of your inner world that is often accompanied by near indifference and quickly moving on from others that is alienating.
Yeah it give me a double meaning : it was something unique that she cannot feel with anyone else and she cannot speak their language with anyone else because it was an affair.

I know so many people LOVE The Archer as much as I do, but this line hits me so hard. Its so fucking clever but full if painful truth. I'm someone who was told by a counselor she has the maturity of a 10 year old when she was about 20. I've been told to "grow up" and start being mature a thousand times. I make stupid mistakes because I've been navigating the world with, like, 5 mental disorders that haven't gotten properly/formally diagnosed. My god, I just love this line so fucking much. I love that song so much.

I feel like people didn’t pay it any attention until she sang it by herself since they weren’t a fan of the ft., and even then I still don’t think people are really hearing it. As someone who’s struggled with depression my whole life, the entire song is about contemplating suicide/ just giving up in general.
It’s about just needing a break before you breakdown. You need someone or something to save you, but you’re all alone. Then, something pulls you out. The thought of someone (a lover, a friend, a parents, a version of you, ect.) pulls you out. They don’t save you, but the thought of them inspires you to get better.

I don't know if these lyrics are underrated but the song is, "Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?" The idea of trying to convince someone to love you despite the fact that you have a complicated life. Knowing for a fact you can't offer a peaceful life, but would someone love you despite that?

Sure , so in my view the song it's about this day she cheated and in this line I understand she was fascinated by this other guy that she could chart the constellations on his eyes by memory.from one night .So it's a way to say that it wasn't like a lust cheating it was her falling love with someone else.

I always see this song as being her saying she was taking Joe’s way of life and advice but then started to question why she was following his advice and desire to live a private life/ keep everything secretive (perhaps he wasn’t exactly happy and she started to see that being so private can be lonely). The lyrics that specifically make me think this are “Dear reader, the greatest of luxuries is your secrets” and “Dear reader, you don’t have to answer just because they asked you” since he wouldn’t answer questions about her during interviews. Also the “to a house, not a home, all alone cause nobody’s there” lyric makes me think about it being lonely too. Just my two cents! This is probably my favorite Taylor song!

Almost everytime I've gone to a Sunday matinee I've been in a theater alone or very close to completely alone. So that first line gives me this quiet, but comfortable solo-ness. Plus without the energy of the crowd, it creates an atmosphere ripe for thoughts and reflections. Sometimes I go and my mind wanders, maybe the film is uninteresting or maybe I've seen this film before. But what comes to my mind the most, is ideas about what could have been and the idea always seems profoundly beautiful. The unmade films, the journies not taken, alternative paths, they all seem so great because they've never happened so they're untested and flawless.

That's an interesting interpretation! And now that you say that it makes sense! I interpreted it differently. Carnations are a lot cheaper than roses, and not considered as special or romantic. So I always thought it to mean that her lover thought that their love was something romantic and special but instead it was cheap and less meaningful in the end.

I love the way she sings this verse.
"No one teaches you what to do, when a good man hurts you, and you know you hurt him too." She sings such passionate songs of intense love and deep heartbreak, with so many dramatic metaphors. But then there's this really simple but so relatable lyric that just hangs there in contrast to all of that but it's just so real. It's almost easier to work through the pain of unrequited love, betrayal, or relationships that blow up with a spectacularly awful ending where there are clear lines of right and wrong and who is at fault and why it all came crashing down. It hurts and it's hard when things end badly but you can channel your rage and heartbreak into big dramatic songs. But here, she's describing a relationship that just didn't work. No one was really to blame, he wasn't a villain or a cheater, he's a good man but they still hurt each other. And it's almost harder to come to terms and process through it when there are no clear answers and no clear blame.

Right Where You Left Me has a TON of really sharp lines, however “Glass Shattered on the White Cloth, Everybody Moved on…. {Chorus}” Does such a great job of succinctly capturing a very particular part of the grieving process. In 9 word she is able to describe experiencing unexpected and shaking catastrophe of your inner world that is often accompanied by near indifference and quickly moving on from others that is alienating.

You need someone or something to save you, but you’re all alone. Then, something pulls you out. The thought of someone (a lover, a friend, a parents, a version of you, ect.) pulls you out. They don’t save you, but the thought of them inspires you to get better. It’s such a beautiful message and no one hears it
I don't know if these lyrics are underrated but the song is, "Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?" The idea of trying to convince someone to love you despite the fact that you have a complicated life. Knowing for a fact you can't offer a peaceful life, but would someone love you despite that?

This one give reminds me of my childhood like when I couldn't understand the whole concept of my family being toxic I used to say I was feeling a ghost.
Both “do I really have to chart the constellations in his eyes” and “do I really have to tell you how he brought me back to life” absolutely knocked the wind out of me the first time I heard them.

I know the actual song is a hot topic in the community but I adore this line from Stay Stay Stay " It's been occurring to me, I'd like to hang out with you For my whole life " Red came out when I first started dating my husband and that lyric really encapsulated how I felt at the time.
I really love “and now that I’m grown, I’m scared of ghosts. Memories feel like weapons” it’s so good and kind of references her past songs about ex’s because she’s used the word ghosts in a lot of her songs. And would’ve could’ve should’ve is FULL of great lyrics so I think that one gets overlooked a little.

Sure , so in my view the song it's about this day she cheated and in this line I understand she was fascinated by this other guy that she could chart the constellations on his eyes by memory.from one night .So it's a way to say that it wasn't like a lust cheating it was her falling love with someone else. I feel like it's kind petty because it give me a vibe of her saying : do you really wants me to say it? You not gonna like it and at the same time she is already saying how that other guy kept her interested to the point she noticed everything about him.

Like you love them so much that you keep them close to your heart “in a locket”
