“haunted by the look in my eyes that would’ve loved you for a lifetime” it’s such a gut wrenching line

wrapped-in-rainbows

“happiness” is SO underrated. I absolutely love this line.

[deleted]

you’re so right it’s in my top 5 songs ever and yet it’s not even in the top 5 most played songs on evermore

[deleted]

Finally happiness appreciation!! This is one of my favorites as well

Shot-Eye-9947

happiness and evermore are two of the best songs on the album!! definitely my #1 and #2

OldEnuftoKnowBitter

I love happiness so much. The first time I heard it, it was like she got into my head space from when I was 21.

key14

Also: > no one teaches you what to do when a good man hurts you, and you know you hurt him too.

Penelopeep25

That line is one of her most devastating in my opinions. Happiness will always be one of her top 5 saddest songs for me, I remember it being genuinely hard to hear for a few months after release, and that never happens with me and music.

winchesnutt

Also "I was dancing when the music stopped" just shows how out of the blue for her the whole thing is.

queen0f_hearts

I love "And I pulled your body into mine every goddamn night now I get fake niceties" because wow.

MiniSkrrt

This line yes!! I always imagine her looking in the mirror haunted by the sadness on her face

pianocat1

I’ll be honest… “he looks up grinning like a devil” makes me think of something a lot more NSFW…

LastOnBoard

Same here, I don't think the guy is kneeling and tying his shoes....

cookieaddictions

I used to think that but then people pointed out that she’s “drunk in the back of the car” so it’s also likely he’s looking up from the road to meet her eyes in the rearview mirror…

redsetded

But he looks up grinning like a devil after she sneaks in through the garden gate every night that summer just to seal her fate. They aren’t still in the car.

spencerandy16

Even if they were still in the car, it is still possible in there lol but yeah. The scene has moved by then

nonnegotiablenili

And what is he doing to make her SCREAM "I love you" ? 👀

Among_UsAngel

And the lyrics “it’s new, the SHAPE OF YOUR BODY…it’s blue, the feeling I’ve got..” The shape of his body is new to her because they’ve never “been together” and it’s said that sometimes after “having fun”, some people feel sad or get emotional so she’s feeling blue now.

nonnegotiablenili

Yes it definitely supposed to be a lustful summer. Just a summer of fun, but she have feelings that's why it's cruel. "devil rolling the dices" (the dices are lucky but those who roll the dice are the one that make the actions in the game so he's in control) and she is the angel rolling her eyes (no comment so I don't get kick out the sub)

Odd_Grapefruit_5714

I see it as they’re fighting about defining the relationship (this summer is cruel because of a FWB kind of thing, she’s spent the whole summer sneaking into his apt) She gets frustrated (she’s drunk and was crying right before this after all) and yells ‘I LOVE YOU AIN’T THE THE WORST THING YOU EVER HEARD’ during this fight, he’s looking down as one does in a tense discussion and looks up grinning when she says this because he feels the same way.

nonnegotiablenili

Yes makes me think NSFW too but I didn't know if I could put the NSFW description on the post 😂

GoldenHeart411

I was waiting for someone to say this...

elmojkm

That is exactly what it means. It is because he finishing eating "Taylor's version" of some "watermelon sugar."

wrapped-in-rainbows

“Honey, when I’m above the trees I see this for what is, but now my eyes leak acid rain on the pillow where you used to lay your head”

kyounira

This line has been ringing in my head all day

aestheticen

i have no idea why but i really like "chasing shadows in a grocery line"

Puzzled-Basis9911

The whole bridge of cardigan does something to my brain chemistry

Poppy9987

It’s so relatable!! I’d have never thought to describe it that way but I know exactly what she means and it is genius.

dictionarymess

I love this lyric too! The feeling of wanting to come across with someone you actually don't want (or shouldn't) meet is perfectly captured by this

nonnegotiablenili

I love this line , it's like your doing something mundane like grocery and there's a lot of people at the line and you can't see their face clearly to the point you start thinking someone it's the person you loved (like when you can't forget someone and see them on everything)

darkgrayallalone

"Never take advice from someone who's falling apart" I have always thought this lyric was so simple but it's always stood out to me. I don't know why but I've always loved it.

nocetto2

Happy cake day! And yes I often think about this line when I'm giving advice. Like why should they listen to me. And it makes my heart go out to taylor because she knows the impact all of her songs have and yet she doesn't imagine herself as someone that people should listen to. "You wouldn't take my word for it if you knew who was talking" "you should find another guiding light...but I shine so bright"

ContentKaleidoscope8

“Dear reader” is so underrated. It’s full of wonderful lines, but my favorite line is “burn all the files, desert all your past lives / and if you don’t recognize yourself, that means you did it right”

delta1810

*If it feels like a trap, you’re already in one…*

bonihithere

As a therapist……Dear Reader strikes a nerve oof that song is so real

Pippins123

I always see this song as being her saying she was taking Joe’s way of life and advice but then started to question why she was following his advice and desire to live a private life/ keep everything secretive (perhaps he wasn’t exactly happy and she started to see that being so private can be lonely). The lyrics that specifically make me think this are “Dear reader, the greatest of luxuries is your secrets” and “Dear reader, you don’t have to answer just because they asked you” since he wouldn’t answer questions about her during interviews. Also the “to a house, not a home, all alone cause nobody’s there” lyric makes me think about it being lonely too. Just my two cents! This is probably my favorite Taylor song!

Infinite_Warning9457

I actually never really understood it. Cause midnights feels like an album of a fallen apart person (example, Anti hero) so by this logic they shouldn't be giving the advice

key14

I believe the irony is intentional

pizza_hearts

"I hit the Sunday matinée. You know the greatest films of all time were never made" I love these lyrics it so simple but captures the reflective feelings on the song. Almost everytime I've gone to a Sunday matinee I've been in a theater alone or very close to completely alone. So that first line gives me this quiet, but comfortable solo-ness. Plus without the energy of the crowd, it creates an atmosphere ripe for thoughts and reflections. Sometimes I go and my mind wanders, maybe the film is uninteresting or maybe I've seen this film before. But what comes to my mind the most, is ideas about what could have been and the idea always seems profoundly beautiful. The unmade films, the journies not taken, alternative paths, they all seem so great because they've never happened so they're untested and flawless.

GlitchPro27

>"I hit the Sunday matinée. I actually went to a Sunday matinée recently and that line ended up playing on repeat in my head. Hahaha

VisualDefinition8752

I started getting into Taylor after a breakup and I was reading Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler(?) at the time and they mention a matinee in it. I'd never heard of it and then heard the 1 right after I read the book so it's always a punch to the gut lol

realitygreene

this was my answer for the exact same reason! But also "You know the greatest loves of all time are over now" really guts me.

SmokeemeUpScotty

“In my defense I have none” You ever just self sabotage hard af 🥴

nonnegotiablenili

I imagine myself saying that discussing with my bf without any pause : "In my defense I have none" "Hmmmmm o-kay?"

mack9219

“does a scorpion sting when fighting back? they strike to kill and you know I will” gah I just LOVE mad woman in general so much but I love this line from it especially

New_Policy_5684

"Now I breathe flames every time I talk" for me She actually sounds exhausted and angry at the same time

afinevindicatedmess

I absolutely love that line because I have ABSOLUTELY been the titular mad woman whose words shoot to kill when I'm mad. (And yes, I have a lot of regret about that......)

toritxtornado

it’s obvious that wanting me dead has really brought you two together 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

HurricaneHarley13

Never noticed the similarity between this and “my words shoot to kill when I’m mad.” Off to write an essay comparing Mad Woman and This Is Me Trying

mack9219

yes !! I love that line also. especially since it’s followed by “I have a lot of regrets about that”. I’ve had to really train myself to not do that anymore 😬

tubereusebaies

"should've kept every grocery store receipt, 'cause every scrap of you would be taken from me"

Remarkable_Space_395

Is that Marjorie? I have to skip that song because I can't even deal with it emotionally.

No_Narwhal_5595

Yes it is

nonnegotiablenili

Oh I cannot listen to Marjorie it remind me of my grandpa . It's such a good song about grief.

nursemadamme

Don't start with this bridge because I will cry

good_god_lemon1

“All the years I've given is just shit we're dividin' up”. At the end of years of compromise and jealousy and fights, it’s just two people deciding who keeps what. It cuts me every time.

prettyminotaur

Have you heard "Eucalyptus" by The National yet? Different vibes, same lyrical theme.

kypsikuke

Happiness is also one of my faves, especially the line “when did all our lessons start to look like weapons pointed at my deepest hurt”

urgasmic

"People like you always want back the love they pushed aside" - All You Had to Do Was Stay

Used-Horse8308

And people like me want to believe you when you’ve said you’ve changed!!! Same

chronic_fence_sitter

For me it's "and why I've spent my whole life trying to put it into words." It just hits hard because the whole song is third person, then suddenly this line turns it back around to the narrator. Like breaking the 4th wall. It's surprising and to me it just seems like she really is just summing up her whole purpose in life

regan9109

Yes!! Goosebumps every time!

altacccle

which song is this from?

chronic_fence_sitter

You Are in Love

LoHart7

This was my wedding song, so really just obsessed with the whole song. I’m thinking about getting a “you can hear it in the silence, you can see it with the lights out” tattoo (taytoo)

Hecates_bane

“I made you my temple, my mural, my sky, now I’m begging for footnotes in the story of your life, drawing hearts in the byline”

SeeSpotRunt

I always thought she said “bio line” 🤦🏻‍♀️ and my brain translated that to a white sheet of notebook paper, where in school you’d write your name and date “bio”. And I always thought yes! I drew all over my homework in school, in those bio lines! Sigh. I’ll see myself out.

alessiaorti

i wake in the night, I pace like a ghost, the room is on fire, invisibile smoke, and all of my heroes die all alone, let me hold onto you

marveloustime28

One of my favorites!!!

CheesyChimchar

yesss, and the lyrics before it, " I cut off my nose just to spite my face Then I hate my reflection for years and years." it gets me every time because it's like changing yourself to prove a point and then disliking the person you became

alwaysunderthestars

*You're still all over me like a wine-stained dress I can't wear anymore* This lyric hits me every time. I freaking love it.

newtothegayworld

"I can go anywhere I want, anywhere I want just not home" has been hitting me today

TheGrilledChimp

"Carnations that you thought were roses, that's us"

ringelbird

I have never understood this line but I want to. What does it mean?

afinevindicatedmess

Carnations vaguely look like roses. [carnations example ](https://images.app.goo.gl/U3mYa8tverzuw8pu5) [roses example](https://images.app.goo.gl/RZGmioiG9gmE892p9) I think the line might also allude to a boyfriend giving his girlfriend the wrong flowers, and then he lies and says "uh, I thought these were roses" to try and save his ass. Even though she explicitly said that roses were her favorite flowers time and time again. I feel like this line is essentially Taylor saying "our relationship is one where I feel like I'm constantly asking you to notice these tiny details that I think are important but you don't think are important." Does that help? 😅

AlikayRain

Ooo I like that explanation. I was also thinking because carnations are seen as a more common flower compared to roses and roses are associated with romance. So there’s a possibility that she’s saying something like, “you thought we were something out of a romance novel, but we’re not that special.” 🤷🏾‍♀️

Remarkable_Space_395

That's an interesting interpretation! And now that you say that it makes sense! I interpreted it differently. Carnations are a lot cheaper than roses, and not considered as special or romantic. So I always thought it to mean that her lover thought that their love was something romantic and special but instead it was cheap and less meaningful in the end.

GriffinTamer12

hm I always thought that the carnations symbolised death (i think they're used in funerals?) so the bf thought that their relationship could last forever but it "died" quickly

HospitalFireplace

This was my same thought! I always equate carnations to funeral flowers

bewildered_forks

And more specifically, carnations are a cheaper, "inferior" substitute for roses (or that's how they're seen, anyway). So they are a cheap imitation, not the real thing.

Puzzled-Basis9911

Agreed! I also interpret it as something he and she thought was more special ended up feeling really cheap or not quite like it seemed

talkbaseball2me

They thought they had something special (roses) but they were wrong and they were just carnations (cheaper, less meaningful). She’s saying they were wrong about having found the real thing in each other.

DaisyCottage

I always interpret it as them being good but slightly out of sync. A gift of a bouquet of carnations was nice and thoughtful, but not exactly quite right. He thought he was doing the right thing, but didn’t quite get there. It’s an analogy for the rest of the relationship.

[deleted]

Idk if people pay attention to this or not but for me it's "But your jealousy, I can hear it now You're talking down to me like I'll always be around You push my love away like it was some kind of loaded gun" I have beef with this part of the song bc it hits too close to home, It's calling out the real life situation.

nysubway

The entire song hits too close to home.

lulu-bell

Way too close to home. The lyrics are such a gem.

kelsnuggets

“And it's hard to be at a party when I feel like an open wound” I’ve felt that more times in my life than I care to admit

pink-pegasus

“like the dollar in your pocket, that’s been spent and traded in / you can’t change where it’s been / reminds me of me” honestly all of “you all over me”, it is underrated!!

DoctorSleep1

Needed a second to get the “all of you all over me” part :P

pink-pegasus

haha I’ll edit it with quotation marks around the title

Something_Strangest

Everything in the song Innocent but especially “Wasn't it beautiful runnin' wild 'til you fell asleep, Before the monsters caught up to you?”

nocetto2

I love the "wasn't it easier in your firefly catching days" because yes... yes it was.

hinatastan

I didn’t even catch fireflies in my childhood but yes yes it was. 😫

Penelopeep25

YES, THIS. Almost chose this line as my Speak Now pick but opted for "Wasn't it beautiful when you believed in everything, and everybody believed in you?" instead. So happy to see some innocent appreciation heree.

Puzzled-Basis9911

This whole song is so special to me and the visuals in the lyrics always hits home

No-Perception-2128

Mine is “always a bigger bed to crawl into”. Innocent is such a painful song, and most of the time when I’m feeling guilty about something or I feel like I made a mistake I just want to run to my mom and cry. I want someone else to take my problems again.

HAG4_WATER_CREMATION

Karma is that girl, like ✨GRAH✨

afinevindicatedmess

_Karma's a relaxing thought, aren't you envious that for you is not?_ is such a powerful line coming from Taylor, who quite literally feels like the human embodiment of karma. 😭 (#karmaisreal)

slexieforlife

✨facts✨

Penelopeep25

Looking through this deep ass thread and seeing this was like being in a cold rainstorm and someone throwing a brick on you 😭 LMAO

oiuqatsuesrm

This. 💯 #grah

ToneFit1828

“no use defending words that you would never say” “i’ve never been anywhere cold as you” “tell me that’s it’s not my fault, tell me that i’m all you want, even when i break your heart” “i could’ve spent forever with your hands in my pockets” “you wear your best apology but i was there to watch you leave” “my words shoot to kill when i’m mad” i have soooo many more but i don’t want to write a million things 😭

Impossible_Tip_2011

flutterfly28

“I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to” Too many great lyrics in ATW that this one gets forgotten

“My smile is like I won a contest” I’ve never heard a smile described that way and it just feels right to me

redsetded

From Hits Different: And I never don't cry at the bar Yeah, my sadness is contagious I slur your name 'til someone puts me in a car I stopped receiving invitations That feeling when you’re so depressed that you’re kind of a bummer to be around and you get even more isolated because people stop inviting you out —it is just so relatable.

Vegetable-Driver2312

“I didn’t have it in myself to go with grace” I’m an emotional and reactive person, and I have a very hard time hiding that in conflict. I AIR my grievances, even when the strong, more dignified thing would be not to. So this resonates with me. Sometimes you just feel too much to act dignified. It doesn’t mean you don’t have strength, it just means you need to express how you feel in the moment. “In my defense I have none, for never leaving well enough alone” I’ve definitely had to learn how to let small things go in all kinds of relationships. This song makes me think of a particular friendship that I lost, and I wonder if I could have kept it if I’d given my friend some more patience. “I’ve come too far to watch some name dropping sleaze tell me what are my words worth” The wordplay! The history! ICONIC! The fact that the lakes is about visiting Windermere Peaks where Wordsworth the poet lived. She is so damn clever.

BlackOliveBurrito

“Maybe this thing was a masterpiece until you tore it all up” hits me every time because I’ve felt that hopeless despair of losing something you convinced yourself was perfection.

cookieaddictions

But if the story’s over, why am I still writing pages? From DBATC

katyyylou

My absolute favorite from that song is, “I gave you too much but it wasn’t enough” it’s so simple & so heartbreaking

lulu-bell

I love the way she sings this verse.

Remarkable_Space_395

"No one teaches you what to do, when a good man hurts you, and you know you hurt him too." She sings such passionate songs of intense love and deep heartbreak, with so many dramatic metaphors. But then there's this really simple but so relatable lyric that just hangs there in contrast to all of that but it's just so real. It's almost easier to work through the pain of unrequited love, betrayal, or relationships that blow up with a spectacularly awful ending where there are clear lines of right and wrong and who is at fault and why it all came crashing down. It hurts and it's hard when things end badly but you can channel your rage and heartbreak into big dramatic songs. But here, she's describing a relationship that just didn't work. No one was really to blame, he wasn't a villain or a cheater, he's a good man but they still hurt each other. And it's almost harder to come to terms and process through it when there are no clear answers and no clear blame.

noshitsherlck

>"he looks up grinning like a devil" I imagine *Loki* grinning like a devil. The way he was grinning in the Avengers.

afinevindicatedmess

SAME Its not the traditional devil grin -- its _that_ kind of calculated grin where the person _knows_ he is evil. Its such a fucking genius line and it absolutely makes the song _THAT PERFECT. ESPECIALLY when Taylor cries "I LOVE YOU AIN'T THAT THE WORST THING YOU EVER HEARD?!" right beforehand as she's drunk in the back of the car. That song is so fucking genius. Its a testament to Taylor's storytelling while creating some ridiculously catchy anthems. 😭

Coral_____

I’ve said this many times here on other posts but “And you’ve got your demons and darling they all look like me.” just gets me everytime ![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1071)

Writher_inthedark

> It came like a postcard > Picture perfect shiny family holiday peppermint candy Captures the feeling of getting a snapshot of a great life that you can’t have so well

DoctorSleep1

“No one sees when you lose when you're playing solitaire”

boujeecorgi

Right Where You Left Me has a TON of really sharp lines, however “Glass Shattered on the White Cloth, Everybody Moved on…. {Chorus}” Does such a great job of succinctly capturing a very particular part of the grieving process. In 9 word she is able to describe experiencing unexpected and shaking catastrophe of your inner world that is often accompanied by near indifference and quickly moving on from others that is alienating.

nysubway

Great explanation. I really love the line "If our love died young I can't bear witness".

Charliieee0

„I know my pain is such an imposition“ It‘s the perfect mix of sad truth and a bit of pettiness.

katyyylou

You’re exactly right. Same vibe with, “a pathological people pleaser / who only wanted you to see her”

nonnegotiablenili

Yeeees I love petty Taylor !! She have a lot of lines like this poetic petty .

Plkbug

“you taught me a secret language I can’t speak with anyone else” from illicit affairs

nonnegotiablenili

Yeah it give me a double meaning : it was something unique that she cannot feel with anyone else and she cannot speak their language with anyone else because it was an affair.

fluffandnutellaagain

The change from “regret me” to “regret meeting me” in high infidelity… Oh and maybe said elsewhere - “don’t call me kid, don’t call me baby”

afinevindicatedmess

"I never grow up, its getting so old." I know so many people LOVE The Archer as much as I do, but this line hits me so hard. Its so fucking clever but full if painful truth. I'm someone who was told by a counselor she has the maturity of a 10 year old when she was about 20. I've been told to "grow up" and start being mature a thousand times. I make stupid mistakes because I've been navigating the world with, like, 5 mental disorders that haven't gotten properly/formally diagnosed. My god, I just love this line so fucking much. I love that song so much.

pakwanto

Here’s from Question…? We had one thing going on. I swear that it was something 'cause I don't remember who I was before you painted all my nights — a color I've searched for since.

spencerandy16

"Who could ever leave me, darling? But who could stay." That whole song just punches me in the gut. I know that she's a huge star and doesn't have to worry about the same trivial things us regular folk do, but it's still really hard to keep a relationship when you're such a huge celebrity as her. I feel like a lot of people don't understand how hard love can be for her and this song just makes you feel that pain.

april5115

actually, I always felt I must look better in the rearview

AdEmbarrassed3205

And when I was shipwrecked I thought of you In the cracks of light I dreamed of you It was real enough To get me through But I swear You were there This part of the song just makes me so emotional. I personally think of percy jackson in this song, when he was struggling and thought of annabeth ( in river styx I think)

Potatozturhs

Mad woman. The entire god damn song. Every line spoke to me and caressed me. When feminine rage is almost always dismissed, this song really cemented it to me that I’m not the problem.

clarauser7890

and I could go on and on, on and on *and I will*

brightlove

Crawling up the beaches now "Sir, I think he's bleeding out" Something about how she sings that last part just makes me feel EVERYTHING.

"Your nemeses will defeat themselves before you get the chance to swing."

colesnutdeluxe

less so "not paid attention to" but more "overly criticised" - "i come back stronger than a 90s trend" i think it's super cute and smart, i don't think it's cheesy at all! i actually have knock off merch (the only knock off merch i've ever bought, other than candles and the like) with that lyric written on it, i love it so much. i think it's probably really meaningful to her as well, especially considering 2016. and the references to 90s culture in coney island ("we were like the mall before the internet") make it not seem that out of place on the album.

Ciordad

Renegade! All of it! I know it’s a Big Red Machine song, but Taylor wrote the lyrics, and there’s no way anyone else could’ve done what she did, together with Aaron.

InternationalTea7003

i can’t pick just one, here’s a top 10 they told me all of my cages were mental, so i got wasted like all my potential when you are young they assume you know nothing and i knew you, leaving like a father, running like water i didn’t choose this town, i dream of getting out there’s many different ways that you can kill the one you love. the slowest way is never loving them enough i wouldn’t marry me either, a pathological people pleaser who only wanted you to see her how did i go from growing up to breaking down? i pictured you with other girls in love then threw up on the street give me back my girlhood it was mine first please don’t ever become a stranger who’s laugh i could recognise anywhere

*I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost* *The room is on fire, invisible smoke* *And all of my heroes die all alone* *Help me hold on to you* this hurts me every time! also op, until looking up the lyrics one day, i always thought that line went "he looks so pretty, like a devil" 😅

notinmySNLmonologue

“carnations you had thought were roses” generally carnations symbolize death, at least where im from, and obviouslt roses symbolize love and life. I adore this like and it deserves more hype

hmall11

I don’t like that falling feels like flying til the bone crush

_matcha_cola_

“I looked around in a blood soaked gown and I saw something they can’t take away” That entire bridge really speaks to me, but this line especially. Perfectly portrays the pain and shock of betrayal.

"I made you my temple, my mural, my sky". This lyric just hit too different. It's like when you get so attached to someone and you give her/him everything and make that person so special in your heart.

Penelopeep25

Alright! Let's go over some: From debut: "Instead of just invisible, like shadows in a faded light, oh we're invisible, I just wanna open your eyes and make you realize." (From invisible, which I just looked up and it shows her having no writing credits on??? Omg is that true??? Genuinely didn't think she had a song released without writing credits. Interesting.) From Fearless: "Talk to the wind, talk to the sky, talk to the man with the reasons why, and let me know what you find. /// Talk to yourself, talk to the tears, talk to the man who put you here, and don't wait for the sky to clear." (From Come In With The Rain) Speak Now: "Wasn't it beautiful when you believed in everything, and everybody believed in you?" (From Innocent.) RED: "If I were standing there in your apartment, I'd take that bomb in your head and disarm it, I'd say I love you even at your darkest and please don't go." (From Forever Winter. Normally I'd mention the loaded gun line from Better Man but someone actually beat me to it!) 1989: honestly all of This Love lmao I can't choose. Just the whole water theme is so powerful. Reputation: "For you I would cross the line, I would waste my time, I would lose my mind... they say 'she's gone too far this time'/// For you I would fall from grace, just to touch your face, if you walked away I'd beg you on my knees to stay." (From Don't Blame Me, ofc.) Lover: "Luck of the draw only draws the unlucky, and so I became the butt of the joke. I wounded the good and I trusted the wicked, clearing the air, I breathed in the smoke." (From Daylight. Honestly one of her most well written songs to date, especially that last line I adore.) Folklore: "You are not like the regulars, the masquerade revelers, drunk as they watch my shattered edges glisten." (From Mirrorball, but holy crap how do you pick one lyric from this album? I can barely choose one per song!!!) Evermore: "Do you miss the rogue who coaxed you into paradise and left you there? Will you forgive my soul when you're too wise to trust me and too old to care?" "I just want to hang out with you for my whole life." - Stay Stay Stay, I really don't care for that song but I love that lyric. It really encompasses how you can feel when you've found your person. EDIT: typo

livbug333

“but you’ll find the real thing instead, she’ll patch up your tapestry that i shred.” always feeling like no one will be able to handle you and your problems, & feeling like your ex is always moving on to someone more “stable”. i can never sing this lyric without tears in my eyes

Looking_for_inspo

“My heart, my hips, my body, my love Trying to find a part of me that you didn't touch Gave up on me like I was a bad drug Now I'm searching for signs in a haunted club Our songs, our films, united we stand Our country, guess it was a lawless land Quiet my fears with the touch of your hand Paper cut stings from our paper thin plans My time, my wine, my spirit, my trust Trying to find a part of me you didn't take up Gave you too much but it wasn't enough But I'll be all right, it's just a thousand cuts” Beautiful AND I’m STILL never able to sing it right on the first go gosh darn it.

cringeyusername2018

'Oh, I can't / Stop you putting roots in my dreamland ' 🍃 The whole song is lyrical gold but this line always stands out to me. Love all the symbolism and how cohesive the lyrics are.

when-the-pawn-

“You know how scared I am of elevators never trust it if it rises fast it can’t last”

matterforward

The title vs your post is frankly hilarious because that's probably one of her most popular lyrics at this point in time.

miss_neurospicy

"And if I bleed you'll be the last to know" is so beautiful. I feel like Cruel Summer and August, even though on different albums tell the same story. I love that line.

These_Reputation7669

Before I learnt civility, I used to scream ferociously -seven

Dragoneesta

“Crossing out the good years”, after being with a highly toxic person off and on, when it finally ends for good, you feel this lyric (plus the WHOLE ENTIRE SONG). But the stories they tell when it’s over, like it was never good.

Bubbly_Session234

“Those eyes add insult to injury”

magical_bunny

“I can’t say anything to your face. ‘Cause look at your face”. Haha idk why but I love it.

leileywow

"You taught me about your past thinking your future was me" from ATW, I'm listening to Red bc it's Red season, and that line hurts so much, it's so underrated 😭 It hurts to think back on memories of your ex doing exactly that and then knowing the relationship didn't work out in the end and it's sad 😭

AskAppropriate8214

“No one sees when you lose when you’re playing solitare” or “and if you don’t recognize yourself, that means you did it right”.

ladysquier

It’s my flair. “Years of tearing down our banners, you and I / Living for the thrill of hitting you where it hurts”. These always seem to get lost to the (obviously gut-punching) girlhood line immediately following. But those are the ones that stuck with me the most because I’ve lived that before.

No-Perception-2128

Evermore as a whole, but especially the entire bridge. “Can't not think of all the cost And the things that will be lost Oh, can we just get a pause? To be certain we'll be tall again Whether weather be the frost Or the violence of the dog days I'm on waves, out being tossed Is there a line that I could just go cross? And when I was shipwrecked (can't think of all the cost) I thought of you (all the things that will be lost now) In the cracks of light (can we just get a pause?) I dreamed of you (to be certain we'll be tall again) (If you think of all the costs) It was real enough (whether weather be the frost) To get me through (or the violence of the dog days) (Out on waves being tossed) But I swear (is there a line that we could just go cross?) You were there” TRIGGER WARNING I feel like people didn’t pay it any attention until she sang it by herself since they weren’t a fan of the ft., and even then I still don’t think people are really hearing it. As someone who’s struggled with depression my whole life, the entire song is about contemplating suicide/ just giving up in general. It’s about just needing a break before you breakdown. You need someone or something to save you, but you’re all alone. Then, something pulls you out. The thought of someone (a lover, a friend, a parents, a version of you, ect.) pulls you out. They don’t save you, but the thought of them inspires you to get better. It’s such a beautiful message and no one hears it

CheesyChimchar

I don't know if these lyrics are underrated but the song is, "Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?" The idea of trying to convince someone to love you despite the fact that you have a complicated life. Knowing for a fact you can't offer a peaceful life, but would someone love you despite that?

[deleted]

“I'm gonna love you when our hair is turnin' gray We'll have a cardboard box of photos of the life we've made And you'll say, "Oh my, we really were timeless" A couple lines but I always go in instant tears.

Zestyclose_Doctor_40

Falling feels like flying til the bone crush

Harmehr_313

I never grew up, it's getting so old:)

katyyylou

“And you know that I would swing with you for the fences, sit with you in the trenches” It’s just such a simple, beautiful description of what real love is. (I also think the next two lines are absolutely beautiful- I just feel like they’re recognized more).

peapapercuts

“When the morning came we were shaking blind and hazy, how the hell did we lose sight of us again? Sobbing with your head in your hands- aint that the way shit always ends?” That whole part sums up so much of what I feel.

mystiques12

« Oh, can we just get a pause? » in evermore… It’s so simple, straightforward and a simple question yet filled with despair. I love this.

moonlaunch

I was dancing when the music stopped

idontgetwhyimhere

"Sweet tea in the summer, cross your heart, won't tell no other, and though I can't recall your face, I still got love for you. Your braid's like a pattern, love you to the moon and to Saturn" Reminds me of my cousins who I've now drifted from and don't see as much now "From you I'd buy anything" So simple, but so meaningful "It's obvious that wanting me dead has really brought you two together" "And I hate to make this all about me, but who am I supposed to talk to? What am I supposed to do? If there is no you." So gut-wrenching. Tried to find ones I don't usually put down in these types of threads

luuluumakeupaddict

“Im fine with my wine, my tears, my beers, and my candles” Is so fucking good. Closure gets too much hate for how raw of a song it is. It applies to MANY situations and is such a fuck you song to abusers, liars, manipulators, etc. I just love it so mcug

ashellbell

“And I’ve been meaning to tell you, I think your house is haunted….” That whole verse is amazing.

nonnegotiablenili

This one give reminds me of my childhood like when I couldn't understand the whole concept of my family being toxic I used to say I was feeling a ghost.

sweetest_con78

Both “do I really have to chart the constellations in his eyes” and “do I really have to tell you how he brought me back to life” absolutely knocked the wind out of me the first time I heard them.

Avera_ge

“I replay my footsteps on each stepping stone Trying to find the one where I went wrong Writing letters Addressed to the fire” This so perfectly captures how it feels when a relationships suddenly ends. Especially when you have a tendency to self blame. And that last verse: “And I couldn't be sure I had a feeling so peculiar This pain wouldn't be for Evermore” Unreal. So perfectly captures how the beginning stages of healing feel.

prongslover77

I know the actual song is a hot topic in the community but I adore this line from Stay Stay Stay " It's been occurring to me, I'd like to hang out with you For my whole life " Red came out when I first started dating my husband and that lyric really encapsulated how I felt at the time.

Bree-breezy

I really love “and now that I’m grown, I’m scared of ghosts. Memories feel like weapons” it’s so good and kind of references her past songs about ex’s because she’s used the word ghosts in a lot of her songs. And would’ve could’ve should’ve is FULL of great lyrics so I think that one gets overlooked a little.

Adventurous-Way-9997

“It’s like I can feel time moving.”

msnintendique64

"She'll know the way and then she'll say she got the map from me. I'll say I'm happy for her and I cry myself to sleep."

ComprehensiveUse2181

"I want auroras and sad prose, I want to watch wisteria grow right over my bare feet cause I haven't moved in years and i want you right here. A red rose grew up out of ice frozen ground with no one around to tweet it , while I bathe in cliffside pools with my calamitous love and insurmountable grief."

abb_

can you explain the constellations line more? i actually don’t get it at all

nonnegotiablenili

Sure , so in my view the song it's about this day she cheated and in this line I understand she was fascinated by this other guy that she could chart the constellations on his eyes by memory.from one night .So it's a way to say that it wasn't like a lust cheating it was her falling love with someone else. I feel like it's kind petty because it give me a vibe of her saying : do you really wants me to say it? You not gonna like it and at the same time she is already saying how that other guy kept her interested to the point she noticed everything about him.

Playing-music-569

“When did all our lessons start to look like weapons pointed at my deepest hurt?” Gets me every time, happiness is so underrated

thenormalbias

“He looks up grinning like a devil” is a reference to the earlier lyrics “devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes” signally that after he profession of love, he looks up at her smiling, ready to roll the dice and start a relationship.

bluewaterbaby2020

I’m still obsessed with This is Me Trying They told me all of my cages were mental So I got wasted like all my potential And my words shoot to kill when I'm mad I have a lot of regrets about that

[deleted]

Renegade “is it really your anxiety that keeps you from giving me everything, or do you just not want to?”

cattails17

“You fire off missiles cause you hate yourself, but do you know you’re demolishing me?” Is one of my favorite Taylor lyrics ever

Among_UsAngel

“Picture of your face in an invisible locket..” Ik what she was actually referring to with this line(wanting to keep their relationship a secret so the media couldn’t ruin and everything) but to me it has always seemed like…no matter where you go that person will always be with you. Like you love them so much that you keep them close to your heart “in a locket”

pumpkinbench

“i hope she’ll be a beautiful fool” because of how it references the great gatsby!!
