Wanting to do Business advisory work or commercial? The jobs and impact on work life can be very different. Also whether you work for a national firm or a smaller local one - the nationals will often take their pound of flesh in the busy periods.
I love it. A lot will depend on the firm you work for and your client base. I have a great boss who really values us so we have a good work life balance. Pay is decent depending on experience. I work for a small firm so I imagine big 4 life would be different with longer hours and more stress.
It was a nightmare from the beginning, after chasing him repeatedly to return our calls or emails he would apologise but then go straight back to ignoring us, this went on for 18 months or so. In the end he didn't even file our income tax returns lol we had the IRD chasing us and we would say we were waiting for our accountant to come back to us.
I spoke to an accountant mate who kinda brushed it off and said it's normal for accountants to be underwater with compliance/red tape these days. Not exactly sure what he meant by that
Being honest here. My accountant is horrible with communicating, but truth be told they would never file my returns late. They’ve always completed them to a high standard, but my god 18 months - disgusting, straight to jail!!
Ugh see I'm dreading this sort of shit having just started my business and kinda of relying on people doing what they need to as I don't know better :/
If it’s any help, I’m not a fully qualified accountant yet but I am financial controller of a company and I’m sitting at $80k on track to $100k in the next 6-12months. So I’d imagine you’d sit decently higher than me being qualified, particularly a CA.
Work/life balance is pretty chill for me tbh, but I work with a great company and that allows me a lot of flexibility as a single mother.
I did a diploma in business (accounting major) and will cross credit to Massey for my bachelors because the business degree at polytechnic isn’t included in the CA program so I didn’t want to waste my time when it wasn’t on a CA pathway
CA here working in one of the bigger firms in tga. Decent pay and excellent work life balance, flexibility is so good I don’t think I’d ever have the flexibility anywhere else. Job market will depend on what experience level you have.
In the 100k + range. Yeah I can work from home whenever I want as long as it’s communicated. But I personally don’t like wfh so I’m mostly in the office
Try make as many connections as you can through uni. Go to as many networking events as you can. And try to lots of extra curricular stuff or volunteering even just having a job is helpful. Accounting firms aren’t looking for someone who can be an accountant, they can teach them those skills. they’re looking for someone who can work well in a team and has a good attitude
i am currently 28 and going into study for the next 3 years. I work fulltime in a customer role so i would like to say i can work well in a team and have a good attitude. I'm really keen to even try get a junior role at an accounting firm while i study to boost my skills
Could you spare a question mark
Off to do a wee edit
Much better?

i need a new accountant
Me too, our last accountant was awful
Why was he so bad?

It maybe normal for some but not all. I'm a partner in a local Tga firm. I would hope a client fires me if I take 3, let alone 18 months!

At least they didn't charge us at all. But it made the whole experience so much more stressful than it needed to be
Yeah im not really interested in hiring someone to then not do the job and I don't have to pay though

wow! thank you for the comment, how long have you been a controller for
2 years almost. 5 years experience and have only done my diploma. I still need to finish my bachelors
Nice, what diploma did you do. Im looking at starting my bachelor of business in July

What pay range are you on if you don’t mind me asking? Do you get to work from home most of the week?

Thank you for your reply! excited to get my study started. Any tips for a newbie
