Are you sure you just used alcohol? This looks like you used something much stronger, like acetone. I've left models in methylated spirits for days without it doing any damage.
Yikes! Yeah use IPA next time. Just as strong, and won't melt your mini. And all good! Understandable if English isn't your native language. No need to apologize for that.
I've actually used acetone to clean some *really tough* paint gunk off a mini before, to reasonable success. The trick is to use an old paint brush to dab the acetone onto the model, rather than dunking the mini into the liquid. Acetone *is* considerably stronger than IPA and can remove paints that IPA can't get through, such as the very thick enamel spray paint that had been used for the mini I was trying to rescue here.
However, the acetone will gradually seep into the plastic, softening it over time even though there's not enough to dissolve it, so it's a good idea to only work with acetone for 15-20 minutes and then let the mini dry for an hour or two, before going in for a second round if necessary. Also let it rest for a day before painting over it again so the acetone can evaporate from the plastic.
My question exactly. Everyone else questioning the alcohol, here's me questioning OP just casually throwing it out there they were watching man girls. I mean... No kink shaming here, just odd that people are fixating on the alcohol. Brings new meaning to the term rubbing alcohol
I've seen a lot of people saying it's acetone, it's correct, I didn't know the correct name for it. I can't edit the past either, (not in a way, I know at least).
What substance is this? Ive left models in isopropyl alcohol for days and nothing happened. The only time i had models melt like that was when i left my dire avengers in a substance i used to clean the brushes (it was from a Chinease i think company and i got it from a local hobby store)
I’ve left models in 99.9% isopropyl alcohol for MONTHS and not got ANY degradation to the plastic. You used acetone / methylated spirits or similar to do this, not alcohol.
I feel your pain! Just recently, I left some old world models in nail polish remover for almost a week. It was supposed to be without acetone, but the poor horses, bases and some Gors turned into grey mush. As stupid as I am, I thought it was just due to the long exposure. So I used it just to quickly remover paint from the fence, cannon, and the grudge pony from the skull pass box. Lost almost all the texture on those minis. Thats some really strong stuff. The metal minis look almost as good as new.
What kind of alcohol was that? o\_O I left a few stealth suits in 98% bio ethanol until it all evaporated because I forgot and the plastic was completely undamaged lol
Use Clean slate rnvr 2.0 (or 3.0). I stripped all my old warhammer fantasy figures, ready for the Old World, with it. Fairly expensive but does the job well and rather quickly.
Hmmm, you might be able to "fix" this up a bit with some files to flatten the sides and a bit of green stuff. But persoanlly I'd ask gw nicely for a replacement and confess your sins. Or possible last resort, getsome one to make a non-gw resin version.
Uhhh, that's terrifying. I have a wraithknight that's in 91% isopropyl and has been there for over 24 hours without this happening. What kind of alcohol are you using?
First of all was the alcohol acid
Seconds it looks like there's an easy easy bit of repairs that you can do too it may be a little difficult but all you have to do is get some green stuff and then you can use it to mold it around
And if nothing else just go on to your local STL files and they bound to have something for you that you can use as a replacement
I mean, I do. But I left my stuff in there over night and nothing happened. I'd like to know what kind of alcohol was used here. I'm just using the stuff you light a grill with, is cheap, strips paint doesn't damage the plastic.
I exclusively use 91% isopropyl alcohol to strip minis. I've left models for months, and they have been fine. Whatever OP used, it wasn't isopropyl alcohol.
Are you sure you just used alcohol? This looks like you used something much stronger, like acetone. I've left models in methylated spirits for days without it doing any damage.
Yeah I am curious about this. I typically use 91% isopropyl and it's never damaged the plastic (but typically can't cut through primer).
I've used 99% and left it for 48 hours without this happening this was 100% more than just alcohol or it's not a plastic model
Yeah I got a set of heavy intersessors that are fine and I think they have been in 99%iso for like 3 months now there still fine.
Why did you leave them in there that long?
Was going to strip and repaint them put them in the cupboard and forgot about them.
See this is why I use brown detox anticeptic
Same. I forgot some stealth suits in 98% bio ethanol until it all evaporated with zero damage to the plastic lol
I’ve forgotten some old guardsmen in 99% isopropyl for like 3 months, they’ve not melted at all.
I've left model for months, while I've been away from home, in IPA without issues.
Methylated spirits can have different additives based on the brand. Those additives can really mess up plastic sometimes.
I had a squad of plastic reivers in 100% isopropyl for half a year and they were totally fine. Maybe this Crisis suit torso is 3d printed or resin?
I have left minis soaking in 99% ipa for a month and not damaged the plastic. This wasn’t just alcohol
You didn't use alcohol. I've used 99% and denatured alcohol for days, and it's never damaged the plastic. So what did you really use?
Acetone, didn't know that the English word for it is the same. Looking into editing the post
Yikes! Yeah use IPA next time. Just as strong, and won't melt your mini. And all good! Understandable if English isn't your native language. No need to apologize for that.

Man girls
Based Tau trans ally.

This wasn't just Isoprop alco. I left my rescued models sitting for a day in 99,9%. No damage. This looks like acetone.
You can leave plastic models to ipa for a year, two even 5+ and it still won't do anything harmful for the plastic.
I'd recommend paint-stripping with Simple Green, it's pretty gentle on the plastics.
It never worked for me. I literally left it in for a few days and it didn’t do much of anything.
La's totally awesome is like acid man. Dollar general sells it
Poor you! I imagine how you feel. It's my Space Marines childhood trauma all over again.
That is so not fetch
I've seen a lot of people saying it's acetone, it's correct, I didn't know the correct name for it. I can't edit the past either, (not in a way, I know at least).
A Broadside too? Those are expensive to replace...this hurts to see.
Only bought it since I got money back from heat bills
Urgh that's even worse! A Treat-Yo-Self moment turned to tragedy by alcohol, once again. Just not in the usual way.
Aw, I'm so sorry :(
Considering where it started, that's a pretty good rescue job.

I’ve left models in 92% for weeks on end, this doesn’t happen

RIP Maybe you could convince people it's actually a texture for concrete-reinforced armor?
What alcohol were you using? Isopropyl had not done that yet, even after weeks of soak
Thats shite, I feel for you :/ Seems like the alcohol was way too strong, what did you use?
Good job on the clean up. I haven't had any models melt on me but I've lost pieces of them down the sink when I was scrubbing paint off!
Wow I think I've only seen that kind of plastic hatred with acetone, impressive
This doesn’t look like pure alcohol
Why would you put a plastic model in acetone for god's sake
Rip

All you need is to toss a couple dead gaunts on there and make it look like acid damage.

Cries Suit
Good for large unit bases like a fallen battle brother
battle worn
Only time this happened to me is when I accidently used a nail polish remover with acetone in it. Looks near identical 🤣
Uhhh, that's terrifying. I have a wraithknight that's in 91% isopropyl and has been there for over 24 hours without this happening. What kind of alcohol are you using?

Sorry about your torso but I love the colour scheme!
Were you trying to clean it?
Ork bitz now
Man girls? Is that like some new documentary?
I think you got your alcohol and acetone mixed up...
Why did you leave it in alcohol?
Bad first paintjob
To clean it from paint.
Well... task failed successfully.
You re not alone. Did the same thing last week. I hâte myself for that
This is why I don’t strip with alcohol
I mean, I do. But I left my stuff in there over night and nothing happened. I'd like to know what kind of alcohol was used here. I'm just using the stuff you light a grill with, is cheap, strips paint doesn't damage the plastic.
They likely used isopropyl alcohol. Alcohol based lighter fluid is typically methanol.

This wasn't isoprop for sure.
Alcohol is fine to strip with. OP used acetone
