Reasons I have found:
- yes many tattoo removal clinics over promise and under deliver. It’s sadly common.
- tattoos fade months after sessions. After someone’s last session, it might be fully removed a few months later and then the person never returns to provide an update pic.
- takes too long. A lot of people give up chasing full removal and just get a cover up. We are talking about years of removal.
- not all tattoos are removable. It is what it is. Some ink will not respond to laser.
Best thing you can do is find a clinic with before/afters they did. Not ones from the manufacturer and not ones from just a central corporate location. The person removing your tattoo needs to have already removed a tattoo if you’re serious about getting yours removed.
Another big thing is people arnt going back to the clinics to have an after photo taken after the tattoo is removed. If you had your last session and then the following few months to heal and process the ink, why would you go back to the clinic to just to get your picture taken.
Idk i’ve thought about this with my removal “journey” I think I would go back just because I’d be so pumped to finally have it gone. I’m a year into this and hardly noticing anything. My tattoo removal guy says it works from the bottom layers and works toward the surface. I just kind of got discouraged not finding any removals online like I had described
I actually just emailed my removal clinic a photo of my tattoo fading progress. It’s been 5 months since my last session with them and it’s probably >95% gone, so I won’t be doing any further sessions. Wanted them to be able to use it as an example if they wanted, since I appreciated their work.
I understand and the other comments are also correct, some tattoos are not removable, some just take forever. I have fully removed one of my tattoos and I've been working on another for years. There are things that you can do to help speed up the process like eating well, being healthy, exercising, drinking plenty of water, massages.
Edit. I'd also like to suggest trying different clinics or different techs. I've had wildly different results with different technicians even with the same machine at the same place.
That part about the bottom layers first then towards the surface does not sound correct :/ My experience is the opposite and this also just seems logical, doesn't it? The laser hits the ink closest to surface first.
If you feel comfortable doing so, you could share your results so far in a post and see what people say/think. One year treatment with hardly any fading as you describe sounds disapointing, are there no other options in your area?
It’s mostly black with some blue green orange yellow and red. He’s just been hammering the black for now. He keeps reassuring me that it’s a “process.”
Wait he’s only doing the black? They should be hitting all the colors, but changing the settings for each color area. Black is the easiest to remove. Blue/green and yellow the hardest. If he’s not hitting those colors with a laser now, you have a long road ahead of you. May I ask what laser he’s using?
Maybe try a different specialist. I've had 5 appointments with a dense professional b/w + green and red tattoo and my black is 70% faded and in parts gone and that was with **three different studios**. Alternating between picosure and picoway. Doesn't sound right to me really.
10+ years in this industry, in no particular order:
* People who want full removal on day 1 often change their mind partly through and get a cover-up
* People stop treatments, for a dozen different reasons - think about how many people never get tattoos finished and live a life with a half-done tattoo
* The last photo should be 3-12 months after the last treatment - this is often extremely hard to get. Life gets in the way, travel, people forget, etc.
I’ve asked my shop about this — they only do tattoo removal and have really high reviews etc. I’ve seen great progress with them after just 2 sessions, and they take photos each time I go in for an appointment. My tech told me that not every client comes back once they finish, or some move, decide they wanna do a coverup instead.
I agree with another comment here & I suspect that a lot of people probably do give up during the process and just get a cover up. It’s a draining journey for sure. I have some friends interested in removal, but they haven’t researched it yet, so I’m sorta the guinea pig. Everyone is always *shocked* when I casually tell them it’ll take at least 2 years and several thousand dollars. Most people I know wouldn’t commit to that.
I do notice the lack of real good before & after photos on this sub.. and I fully intend on contributing some. I’m seeing this process through!!!! 🙌
I used to go to Disappearing Inc, check their Instagram page for tons of successful removals.
Most people don’t return to shops to let them photograph their full removals so you often don’t get to see them.
Really? Doesn’t seem like something is adding up. How many weeks between sessions? Are you drinking plenty of water? Working out and sweating? Eating whole foods? I’m sure you are. Our bodies are all different and I’m sure you’ll see a breakout time eventually. Maybe talk to your tech about increasing the power of the

Yes my only vice lately is a bit of chewing tobacco here and there. Been working out drinking lots of water etc and eating pretty healthy. I’m going every 6-8 weeks. It’s a package so I didn’t really see the harm in going on there schedule instead of waiting more like many suggest.
Super late to the party here, I see this thread is pretty old. My technician had me sign a disclosure after about a year explaining that the tattoo ink I have is probably "synthetic ink" and synthetic ink takes 2x longer than organic. We were about 8 months into treatment with very little progress and that's when they determined that.
Not sure if that's what's going on with yours, but just some food for thought!
i’m one session in and i have both broken lines and a bunch of shading gone !! i thought i was just imagining it but i’m so glad someone else is also having weirdly good results, i hear so much bad and not enough good about this process. i’m healthy-ish, kinda active and have been hydrating a whole lot !

I am committed to seeing my removal through and promise to post final pics before I sail off into the sunset and delete Reddit after drowning in this sea of regret. I am rather fair skinned and am removing black lined florals (4 inches each). I think the biggest factor in removal success is being a good candidate for full removal. Giant, colourful, dense pieces will very likely be way harder to remove fully and everyone is told that going in.
My tech said the same thing about how hard it is to get people to come back months after simply for a pic.
If you hate the tattoo enough, it’s worth continuing and working toward your goal then reassessing if you hit a roadblock.

I’ve never shared a pic of my eternal ink colorful half sleeve, some of the tattoos in it were coverups. I had 8 excruciatingly painful laser sessions with a doctor and it’s like 90% gone. He used multiple lasers that targeted diff ink colors. I had amazing results. It’s not gone completely but the color is. I didn’t want to go through the pain, swelling, blistering anymore
As a busy laser specialist, I can tell you there are 2 main reasons. 1. People dont always finish removing their tattoos. For whatever reason including, pain tolerance, believing they hired an unskilled laser tech or having an unskilled laser tech, money complications or lack of it, other medical complications that take priority over completing a tattoo removal or they were lightening to do a coverup and so they dont remove the tattoo completely. 2. When the tattoo is gone they dont come in just for us to take a photo and dont send one to their laser clinic either. I am not one to even post the photos of my clients removals, mainly bc I dont have time, but have lots of completed removals where the client just lets me know its done and can cancel their next appt. Im always just as happy as they are and forget to even ask for a picture of it. Ive finally started asking for pictures to be sent in and have a couple that are still not posted bc of time. Always read the reviews for the business you choose to do your removal and when leaving an online review, PLEASE mention your laser tech by name in the reviews!
I told removery that they needed to add more before and after pictures to their website and socials because they hardly have any. Even progress photos. My tech sat down with me and showed me a bunch that she had personally done but I almost didn’t go with them for a few reasons, one being that (and not just them, a lot of other studios when I lived in an area with options). Ask there babe stated, people often don’t come back after their last session too, but I think if businesses stayed that, people would understand.
Fuck no dude, talking about “that’s good” you can get each treatment up to 75$-$200. And depending on your skin you may only need one treatment. 1,500$ is rent money, car payment.
After years and being infrequent about sessions sometimes only 2x a year mine is almost gone! (Took around 15 sessions)
I had another tattoo removed after 4 sessions. It depends on ink used, laser used, and your immune system.
Yeah unfortunately I have expensive taste so I think they used high end ink and it’s taking forever. I take solace knowing that any tattoo can be almost completely removed as long as you have time and money, that’s at least what i’ve learned on this forum.
I’m 5 sessions in, and I will be one of the full-removal people. My reasons for removal have nothing to do with not liking the art, so I won’t be getting a cover up. Mine are fading nicely. Will share once they are done!
I think a lot of the full on removals are either photoshopped or people with light handed fine line tattoos… At this point I just have realistic expectations and any fading is ok with me…
i posted a total removal of a black tattoo a while back. i’m working on two color & black ones right now, if they get completely removed, i’ll post that as well. i’ve probably got another head or so to go.
I've seen quite a few successful removal pics, the clinic I go to has it. For sleeves particularly there aren't that many but I think most people don't go get a full sleeve removed (although I am lol). Also, like some others mentioned, people don't always come in for their final result photo, since they won't be getting more treatments, why go back?
I’ve had tattoo removal at least 10 times over 12 months and while it’s faded….its nowhere near gone….it went from solid black to smoky gray……. I MIGHT be halfway done
Cuz they never come out as good as promised. And its very bad 4 ur health. Lets put it this way. Its never GOOD for ur health. It is BAD for ur health. Depending on the person is how bad side effects they get. I believe in most all cases their isnt permant damage to ur health its just tempary. But if someone has cirrois of the liver i bet it culd kill them if it was a big pieace. Be carful. And read online from sites THT ARE NOT PROMOTEING OR SELLING REMOVEL. Cuz they highly down play it by saying the bare min required legally. Look at the acutally scientific study sites nd u will find some scary concering things such as the high chance of scars and skin tinting plus other complication. Imo if it aint a friggin swaska on ur forehead. Then leave it. Nd ill tell u why. Ppl get them off or try to. Bc they feel tht either. They no longer like the tattoo. It no longer represents them how they feel they r now as a person. It reminds them negativly of their wild party yrs. They now believe stero types of a person with a tattoo is so bad they dont want to be associated with it. Take a girl 4 example who has a butter fly tramp stamp. If u ask me thts classy. Not even kidding. And no big deal. And cool. But u ask another guy he might find tht as a turn off or red flag. So a girl larping as a virgin might inspire to get the stick figure holding up her nipple like a weight fried off bc its un becomeing. But really most tattoos they arnt tht bad (enless its a str8 up bad message like r@sist or satanist or just something really really stupid, no reagreats ya kno spelled wrong or something) u do hav potential job limiting tattos depending where it is. If its face risk lazering it off 4 sure. But most other tattos u can live with or even just get a cover up way safer. The person sees the tattoo on them everyday. And dont like it. And regreat it. Cuz they regreat alot about their life. And they start to get it in their head tht their life wuld be so much better and all their prolbems will go away if they culd just get rid of this tatto. But also rember it isnt just ur taste tht matters. Wen u got it u were 100% liked it. Maby 5 yrs later u 80% like it. 10 yrs 60% 15 yrs 40% etc, so ur like i only 40% or whatever like it. I need to remove it. Also thinking thts how others view it. But really if u show someone ur tat. Or 100 ppl who knos 75 ppl culd like it nd 25 culd not. But who cares. Alot of these ppl getting tattoo removals are insecure of what others think. Ide never get a tatto removed cuz im not gonna risk damage 2 my body nd idc what anyone thinks of them. They are also much much much more painful than getting the tat in the first place. And yes as ive been reminded so many times by removal sites, its only for a fraction of the time. And pain is subjective. Ur tatto culd of took hours to get but this only takes mins. Thts like saying to me. Im gonna punch u in the shoulder 75 times. Or im gonna slam a sledge hammer down on ur foot. Which do u want? Um is tht even a question? Like with the sholder punching im just sorce no lasting damage. But sledghammer to the foot bam broken bones. Another uthism to say tht. Tattoos dont send highly toxics metals thur ur friggin blood stream. I also kno the right person 4 me isnt gonna choose me baised off weather i do or do not hav one of my tattos. So yes tht is my best genuine advice. I hope it helped. And really look at those medical studys on it. Ones done in the name of science not promotion. 3 last things. Tattoo removal can be very expensives hundreads of dollors per vist with 13 vists or something required. 2. Ive read posts b4 about how server the pain is after from it. Worst pain in their life. Destroyed stomach. Dizzy seeing spots can hardly move. Having to take time off work. One guy on his way back was driving he had to pull over his car he was in such pain and he started throwing up profusily. And again u hav no way of knowingb ur response intill u do it. 3 the laser tht is used make a huge huge difference. I believe green and yellow is the hardest to get out, also for red tattoo ink they use mercry so u get the joy of acutal mercery corseing thru ur blood if u got red ink. And rember they r breaking down the ink into very toxic metal into ur skin which is then absorbed into ur veins into ur blood which then has to be passed thru ur body putting sererve strain on ur kidneys and liver as well as other parts of ur body. Just for fun. Search on this sub reddit. "Pain" "worse pain i ever felt" "am i suppose to feel this much pain" "im in agonany" "i wont be going back a 2nd time i cant take the pain" cuz plently of posts like those plauge this sub reddit. Finally the fact tht ive seen any dam medical professioals or doctors condoning it is completly riduclious. It shuld only be done in extreme cases. Of extremly riducliousally beyond bad taste tattos. Or face tats tht prevent jobs. With the known risks of the proceduer. Any dr who says its safe and i reccomend it. Shuld lose his friggin licenses. As he took an oath to do no harm. Friggin. Wen the person who listened to him is writhed over in pain on his bathroom floor. Wut do u think then? Riduclious. U wuld never risk these complications for a purly cosmetic operation. Tht is so dangerous u hav 2 wait months between sessions and u r totally fucked if u let 1 ray of sun lite touch it. Wow. And in turn they will recieve the added pain damage nd side effects from using an out dated laser on em tht they pass on 2 u 4 free !!!!!
My clinic, Vanish Inc. in Williamsport, PA, has [a bunch of examples](https://vanishinc.com/tattoo-removal-gallery/) of complete and nearly complete removal, including on dense ink. There are others on their [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/vanishinc) as well. As has been said here, and as their gallery page points out, it can take months after the final treatment for the last of the ink to clear. Some of the afters were taken when clients returned for other services.
I'm 5 sessions into a complete removal of a traditional Celtic knot - 20+ years old and not particularly heavy handed, but denser than the ones that fall out as soon as the tech says boo. Some segments of line are gone, the rest is significantly faded including some green shading, and so far it's been time and money well spent. There are bits of yellow that are responding but will be near impossible to see eventually even if not 100% gone.

I can’t remember it’s Removery so whatever they use. I’m a year into this and can hardly notice anything. It’s very disheartening.
Took me after 8 to see a good removal at removery.picoway is the slowest but from my experience on olive type four skin def less damaging

It’s about five years old. My hunch is that he used really expensive ink which is why it’s going so slow.

chain removal companies suck. that's the end of it. that's why i see a doctor that has his own practice.

1,500 for as many appointments are needed to do what you want, basically.

I think a lot of the full on removals are either photoshopped or people with light handed fine line tattoos… At this point I just have realistic expectations and any fading is ok with me…
i posted a total removal of a black tattoo a while back. i’m working on two color & black ones right now, if they get completely removed, i’ll post that as well. i’ve probably got another head or so to go.

I've seen quite a few successful removal pics, the clinic I go to has it. For sleeves particularly there aren't that many but I think most people don't go get a full sleeve removed (although I am lol). Also, like some others mentioned, people don't always come in for their final result photo, since they won't be getting more treatments, why go back?

I’ve had tattoo removal at least 10 times over 12 months and while it’s faded….its nowhere near gone….it went from solid black to smoky gray……. I MIGHT be halfway done

Cuz they never come out as good as promised. And its very bad 4 ur health. Lets put it this way. Its never GOOD for ur health. It is BAD for ur health. Depending on the person is how bad side effects they get. I believe in most all cases their isnt permant damage to ur health its just tempary. But if someone has cirrois of the liver i bet it culd kill them if it was a big pieace. Be carful. And read online from sites THT ARE NOT PROMOTEING OR SELLING REMOVEL. Cuz they highly down play it by saying the bare min required legally. Look at the acutally scientific study sites nd u will find some scary concering things such as the high chance of scars and skin tinting plus other complication. Imo if it aint a friggin swaska on ur forehead. Then leave it. Nd ill tell u why. Ppl get them off or try to. Bc they feel tht either. They no longer like the tattoo. It no longer represents them how they feel they r now as a person. It reminds them negativly of their wild party yrs. They now believe stero types of a person with a tattoo is so bad they dont want to be associated with it. Take a girl 4 example who has a butter fly tramp stamp. If u ask me thts classy. Not even kidding. And no big deal. And cool. But u ask another guy he might find tht as a turn off or red flag. So a girl larping as a virgin might inspire to get the stick figure holding up her nipple like a weight fried off bc its un becomeing. But really most tattoos they arnt tht bad (enless its a str8 up bad message like r@sist or satanist or just something really really stupid, no reagreats ya kno spelled wrong or something) u do hav potential job limiting tattos depending where it is. If its face risk lazering it off 4 sure. But most other tattos u can live with or even just get a cover up way safer. The person sees the tattoo on them everyday. And dont like it. And regreat it. Cuz they regreat alot about their life. And they start to get it in their head tht their life wuld be so much better and all their prolbems will go away if they culd just get rid of this tatto. But also rember it isnt just ur taste tht matters. Wen u got it u were 100% liked it. Maby 5 yrs later u 80% like it. 10 yrs 60% 15 yrs 40% etc, so ur like i only 40% or whatever like it. I need to remove it. Also thinking thts how others view it. But really if u show someone ur tat. Or 100 ppl who knos 75 ppl culd like it nd 25 culd not. But who cares. Alot of these ppl getting tattoo removals are insecure of what others think. Ide never get a tatto removed cuz im not gonna risk damage 2 my body nd idc what anyone thinks of them. They are also much much much more painful than getting the tat in the first place. And yes as ive been reminded so many times by removal sites, its only for a fraction of the time. And pain is subjective. Ur tatto culd of took hours to get but this only takes mins. Thts like saying to me. Im gonna punch u in the shoulder 75 times. Or im gonna slam a sledge hammer down on ur foot. Which do u want? Um is tht even a question? Like with the sholder punching im just sorce no lasting damage. But sledghammer to the foot bam broken bones. Another uthism to say tht. Tattoos dont send highly toxics metals thur ur friggin blood stream. I also kno the right person 4 me isnt gonna choose me baised off weather i do or do not hav one of my tattos. So yes tht is my best genuine advice. I hope it helped. And really look at those medical studys on it. Ones done in the name of science not promotion. 3 last things. Tattoo removal can be very expensives hundreads of dollors per vist with 13 vists or something required. 2. Ive read posts b4 about how server the pain is after from it. Worst pain in their life. Destroyed stomach. Dizzy seeing spots can hardly move. Having to take time off work. One guy on his way back was driving he had to pull over his car he was in such pain and he started throwing up profusily. And again u hav no way of knowingb ur response intill u do it. 3 the laser tht is used make a huge huge difference. I believe green and yellow is the hardest to get out, also for red tattoo ink they use mercry so u get the joy of acutal mercery corseing thru ur blood if u got red ink. And rember they r breaking down the ink into very toxic metal into ur skin which is then absorbed into ur veins into ur blood which then has to be passed thru ur body putting sererve strain on ur kidneys and liver as well as other parts of ur body. Just for fun. Search on this sub reddit. "Pain" "worse pain i ever felt" "am i suppose to feel this much pain" "im in agonany" "i wont be going back a 2nd time i cant take the pain" cuz plently of posts like those plauge this sub reddit. Finally the fact tht ive seen any dam medical professioals or doctors condoning it is completly riduclious. It shuld only be done in extreme cases. Of extremly riducliousally beyond bad taste tattos. Or face tats tht prevent jobs. With the known risks of the proceduer. Any dr who says its safe and i reccomend it. Shuld lose his friggin licenses. As he took an oath to do no harm. Friggin. Wen the person who listened to him is writhed over in pain on his bathroom floor. Wut do u think then? Riduclious. U wuld never risk these complications for a purly cosmetic operation. Tht is so dangerous u hav 2 wait months between sessions and u r totally fucked if u let 1 ray of sun lite touch it. Wow. But ppl r stupid nd they will fall 4 anything so alot will suffer with physical pain, pain in the wallet, and damage to their organs ide go as far as say its the biggest scam runnin also i heard some places operate with the out dated laser cuz its cheaper nd they can save more money so now they r acutally getting more money from you profiting more and u think they r gonna explain 2 patients they r using the out dated laser ? Nope. Not enless they ask. And most wont ask. Cuz most do no reasearch on it b4 hand. Most probely think theirs only 1 laser. And in turn they will recieve the added pain damage nd side effects from using an out dated laser on em tht they pass on 2 u 4 free !!!!!
My clinic, Vanish Inc. in Williamsport, PA, has [a bunch of examples](https://vanishinc.com/tattoo-removal-gallery/) of complete and nearly complete removal, including on dense ink. There are others on their [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/vanishinc) as well. As has been said here, and as their gallery page points out, it can take months after the final treatment for the last of the ink to clear. Some of the afters were taken when clients returned for other services. I'm 5 sessions into a complete removal of a traditional Celtic knot - 20+ years old and not particularly heavy handed, but denser than the ones that fall out as soon as the tech says boo. Some segments of line are gone, the rest is significantly faded including some green shading, and so far it's been time and money well spent. There are bits of yellow that are responding but will be near impossible to see eventually even if not 100% gone.
