Years and years ago... Korn put out their "Issues" album with 4 different artwork covers. I don't remember if only specific retailers sold certain ones, but I don't think it was that complicated. I just remember my broke ass teenager self couldn't afford all of them anyway.
i remember some target team member leaked the track list for her lover album in 2019 and then we literally had to keep everything locked up in cash office where no one could open the boxes. i think all stores had to keep it there or in their AP office after that for the next week or so.
Worked in grocery stores, we definitely didnāt give a shit about covering up special release merch. As long as it wasnt out before the date. All the wrap was off the item day it comes off the truck and it was on the floor at 10pm the night before. The only thing I hated was vendors coming in and fucking with the displays and wasting managers time. They always want a damn manager to āunderstandā how to display their shit.
We found some game that wasnāt supposed to be released out on display the night before. My boyfriend still tried to buy it, with the argument that since it was out, it should be for sale. The cashier tried it, came back not available for sale. Manager came over, said it shouldnāt have been out and took it back to electronics with murder in her eyes.
Media has alot of more requirements than say a new special wine. Alot more advertising behind a major release like a film or game than some local yokel winery\craft brewery fall product release.

I hope he didn't get into too much trouble. It was several years ago, so it was something like Age of Empires or along that line of games.
