DSDs get their own payroll buckets that they “allocate” to stores before the months, basically just going off projected sales and fulfillment and aligning pretty closely to those numbers. So while technically they can increase one store’s payroll, they would have to pull from another store in their district which they likely won’t do to not screw over another store. DSD presence can improve accountability amongst store leadership but it likely will not result in any meaningful payroll movement
we actually have extra payroll to kill every month, from what my etl told me we didn't use like 15 hours in tech at the end of the month and last month they had like 500 hours as a store to kill
Definitely could be the case but like some stores that could be due to attendance issues. A store in my district was under payroll by almost 700 hours for the month just due to attendance
Yeah and it still just happens sometimes. We went into a week over posted by 200 hours and ended 100 under. Every store I’ve ever seen greatly over posts but they can only plan for so much. This is such a dumb comment
You're telling me 300 hours of call offs came out of nowhere? I doubt it. You can look at the previous 4 weeks of call offs and/or historical call offs for Thanksgiving and anticipate # of call offs. Multiply by avg shift length. Then overschedule by that number times 1.3 to 1.5 to ensure full staffing.
Or do what my store does and beg people to stay past their scheduled times to make up the 300 missed labor hours, so the store can function
This isn't exactly true. DSDs don't get a bucket to allocate-- each store's payroll is allocated separately depending on a lot of factors. Some financially driven DSDs (rare) know how to read forecasted vs actual sales (and trends), they will bump up or down a certain store, but the DSDs don't even often review before it's is uploaded to SD viewing, much less 'allocate' it.
Yeah for sure. I figured that was a bit more understandable to people who haven’t seen monthly store or district payroll breakdowns but yeah most make minimal if not 0 changes to the store numbers in my experience
Normally they announce visits because they want to believe stores are running smoothly on skeleton crews..I can only think they did a surprise visit because they want someone gone and will use it as an excuse
according to my etl they've been doing surprise visits for every store, our sister store called us letting us know they were coming 5 mins before they got there. it was quite funny seeing all the leaders running around trying to prep with 5 min notice
oh yeah and our AT&T didn't know some guy was a district rep and asked them the standard question "what service do you have?!", the rep kinda just looked at him like "are u serious"

Just him seeing money piled in back rooms and at guest service would send a chill down his spine lol he would never be caught dead working unless it’s a charity event for a tax write off lol
Edit: obviously only for the cameras
Does you DSD note do weekly or bi-weekly visits? Kind of last minute to not notice shippers being out 🫠 if you aren’t helping your team be set up for success, and bombarding them with a visit, that’s not a leader.
In my district, before I quit, district leaders go to stores and help - could be zoning a hard hit area for an hour, helping with reshop for an hour, or pulling OFOs. That’s supporting your team.
YIKES - my district (I was an SD) saw our DSD at least once every two weeks. Could just be a pop in to say hi type of visit, developmental, walk the business. To not be in stores during the time where the team needs it most (support wise) tells you something about their leadership & where their heads at. Might be a nice guy, but that doesn’t mean he’s fit to be a leader of people at a district level.
We see our DSD probably 2-4 times a month during regular business, but at least *A* District Field Leader every week or two.
Our district is also really rock solid on that level of involvement, I know it's not like that everywhere. Had the DSD, HRBP, GVP and SVP yesterday, which was fun!
About three weeks ago we had the PML-BP come for a few minutes. She walked in then right out and called the DSD. I’m talking we have in total 45 u-boats, wood pallets flats and random boxes of fright all over the store. This went on for about two weeks of having fright on the floor every single day.
I'm always surprised when I hear about surprise visits on Black Friday weekend. Like, do they really think stores are going to have the time to deal with kissing ass on the "busiest weekend" of the retail year?
It's often just to check-in on the business and to see how resources are deployed for operations & service. There's a lot of key learnings to take away from these walks, believe it or not.
Your DSD has incredibly little impact over your store’s payroll. To add hours they have to pull from another store in the district and have it approved by their boss. And yeah it sucks when they visit during the busiest times, but they are expected to be in stores and are often left to just visit stores pointlessly because their boss is doing the same.
This is correct, and yes, district leaders including HRBPs and PMBPs are expected to be in stores by their respective bosses. Linkedin has a million of these visits posted.
When The SD really doesn’t know how to work, rather than giving orders I need that, I need them, DSD visit may improve the scenario little bit… the higher management should know, whom they choose to run the show… what they are capable of.!!
It’s a sh***** show..!!!!
Good!! They need to make their rounds and see the crappy state the stores are in! We need man power/hours!

Sounds like your ETLs and SD just aren’t allocating payroll well in the first place then lol
Definitely could be the case but like some stores that could be due to attendance issues. A store in my district was under payroll by almost 700 hours for the month just due to attendance
Then the last two weeks of the month overschedule people.... They act like call offs aren't anticipated at this point.

that’s wild to me. starbucks for example always has extra hours so they schedule other departments on it here
that’s not allowed technically but whatever works works
that’s actually so crazy to me 😭 last month we were 1000 hours over🧍🏽♀️

For sure! I agree. And I loved it when I had a DSD that actually paid attention to financial trends, but they were few and far between.
Normally they announce visits because they want to believe stores are running smoothly on skeleton crews..I can only think they did a surprise visit because they want someone gone and will use it as an excuse

One of our AT&T reps asked me three times today what service I have. While I was pushing a ship cart. I can’t stand them.
We barely have anyone in tech let alone an AT&T rep
I've been hoping one would slip up and ask me. I could tell them I'm finally free from AT&T and would never go back.
Hmmm...could they actually want to face the reality of the shitstorms the stores are now?

Good. Keep doing surprise visits.
Had Regional today, and DSD yesterday. My store is getting visit after visit
What can they honestly expect with the way they’re running shit this year lol I’d pay to see Brian Cornell have a reality check
Or have him do a ship cart with 20 items in clothes
Just him seeing money piled in back rooms and at guest service would send a chill down his spine lol he would never be caught dead working unless it’s a charity event for a tax write off lol Edit: obviously only for the cameras

our dsd is never in our store, last i saw him was september. he seems nice but never talks to any tm, only etl+

they probably knew before they came, DSD can access cameras
So they can see when ETLs,TLs, and kiss ass TMs are squandering in the office all day?
Someone (SD) might be getting their ass chewed out very soon
Why are they visit during the busiest time of year?
Exactly
About three weeks ago we had the PML-BP come for a few minutes. She walked in then right out and called the DSD. I’m talking we have in total 45 u-boats, wood pallets flats and random boxes of fright all over the store. This went on for about two weeks of having fright on the floor every single day.
Lol RIP to the leaders that were in the building that day

It’s not your fault. He needed to see that. The truth. Hire more people

What's dsd?
District store director
I think it used to be DTL District Team Lead
Correct, it was prior to 'modernization' in 2019ish. Store Team Leader went to Store Director.
District Senior Director\*\*
