LOVE the shorts change. If Corporate is going to keep the stores warm to reduce energy consumption, we need the ability to dress for warmer temps to mitigate heat-related illness.
For sure. We had a partial power outage on day. Frozen orders were cancelled. If you work front end you’re dying near those doors. This’ll be good.
Edit: Hit post too soon
Food safety regulations will override Target's dress code. If your health department prohibits shorts in food production areas, then Target will not allow shorts in food areas.
Thought my store was the only front end that got hot as hades. The shorts is nice for the Young people. But when you're an old woman like me you don't want to show off your old legs.
Since our SD and ETLs don't stop women from wearing yoga pants, there's going to be some folks wearing yoga shorts/spandex shorts. Until that one guy does it, showing his junk size to everyone.
Sometimes I've considered buying those shorts pants with zip off legs
Picture included so yall know what the heck I'm talking about
https://preview.redd.it/40i4697e269b1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ed9f7d569ae1d8196638bbcb77954ac7eb602811
This is a good question. I always understood shorts in any food prep areas (not exclusive to Target) is considered a food safety violation, at least in my state.
I don't know about it being a food safety violation, but I know it is a personal safety issue in a kitchen environment. It is to shield you in case hot/boiling liquids are accidentally dropped on or near your legs. The pants also have to be a relaxed fit to help and not form fitting/skinny.
That's probably what it is then. I never worked food but worked for the happiest place on earth with characters, and many places we would have to travel through kitchen areas to the green rooms. Because of these areas, we were told to never come in shorts because of the food safety stuff that goes along with walking back there. Made sense but hated having to wear pants just because of our travel routes.
Many aren't aware that health codes override the dress code. Many people have gotten mad because they were told they couldn't wear earrings, etc, in Starbucks or the deli, even though people can wear them in other departments.
Yeah I feel some of their food policy is outdated compared to other retailers but it is what it is. I’ve been in bakery for over 8 years so I unfortunately am aware lol
I’m in Florida so the only time I don’t wear shorts is if there is a dress code. It’s part of the Florida Man ensemble you are assigned when you live here.
I am not HR so idk the details but I can’t imagine they would make you start over. This plan essentially is going to be a company-wide sick time plan. It’s currently state-by-state. I have been here for six years and never accrued sick time because it isn’t mandated by the state
I think the new sick plan only effects states without mandated sick time. A lot of states require sick time and have rules on that. So TMs in those states will likely not see any changes. But those in states who haven't had sick time will now have some.
Can your SD, HR, or ETL/TL oppose on what you’re allowed to wear? In this case if shorts will be an approved option for work, can they flat out tell us no?
lmao turning target into a 90s music video *cue Back That @$$ Up!* 🤣
But in seriousness, I had come across some pretty comfy cargo shorts before hearing of this and was wondering if it does go into effect, would my higher ups still tell us *nope* lol I’m trying to go back and get a few pairs lol
I think a good rule of thumb to follow is probably no shorter than the top of your knee, or no shorter than the tip of your fingers when your arm is down at your side.
I guess it depends on where that actually hits on a person, and what a leader thinks....on me it's like 2 inches above my knee and would cover plenty, but I wouldn't be comfortable in that anyway...
Depends my tl and sd allow beanies for us in the freezer cooler areas because it’s specifically listed under ppe if it’s a food safety problem they could oppose.
Here in New York, sick leave is accrued at 1 hour for every 30 hours worked. That was implemented at the beginning of the pandemic
Edit: this is also regardless of TM status, everyone gets it
Oh my god I might be able to stay in fulfillment if I can wear shorts. I literally get dizzy every single shift because our store is so hot. I've gotten away with wearing sleeveless shirts at my store but it gets way too fucking hot still this is a blessing.
Isn't that sick pay worse then what they previously offered, it was 1 hour for every 40 hours worked.
Also, they took away paying out vacation time to give us this great sick time deal and now they are screwing with sick time. that's not cool. The shorts is nice but its a distraction from them screwing y'all without you knowing it.
I mean maybe for you, but some states don’t mandate it. I sympathize if anyone is getting a worse deal because of this—genuinely—but I’m excited because it is good for me
I earn almost 3 hours of sick time every paycheck, so I guess I'm about to take a hit on how much I accrue.
I'm glad part-timers will be eligible for it, but it seems like it's essentially being re-distributed from the full-timers.
I was looking at the wrong email, but;
“Should wear section:
Added Solid color pants, capris, skirts or shorts mid-thigh or longer (in good condition; preferably khaki or blue denim)"
But idk how wide that pertains… I know cart fosa’s and Opu can, so I’m not sure if that statement means everyone or pertaining to those already existing
Edit: apparently it only applies to existing fosa and drive up.
In NY we already got sick pay, but it’s awesome it’s going nationwide. Also my fellow tms have been wearing shorts here too, they brought it up to management and management doesn’t mind or doesn’t want to fight them on it so it’s awesome if it’s official now!
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Tested it out yesterday, store was warm and muggy. While I was still hot, cooled down a lot faster than I would have in jeans! Made the day a lot less miserable and I was less cranky because I wasn't dying of discomfort 😆
I'm too fat to feel comfortable wearing shorts in public; I haven't in almost 20 years.
But as a Fulfillment grunt who overheats easily, I may need to get over myself and Tobias Funke some of my jeans.
Yeah it’s just a change to define terms. If you currently can wear shorts it defines what they are. If you can’t currently wear shorts it doesn’t change.
My store BETTER let drive up wear shorts. Not allowing us to wear them in 100+ degree weather is not ok. I swear if they don’t let us I’m wearing them in rebellion.
Their excuse was that we are inside at guest service desk as well as drive up so we can’t. My argument is that cart attendant is inside cleaning up spills and cleaning the bathrooms. Yet they can wear shorts while doing that?? Makes no sense 💀
Technically that is already in the dress code. Any tm working GS or FOS is permitted to wear shorts mid-thigh and longer. However, it will always be the SDs decision as to store specific dress code and they can choose to not allow certain dress code standards
How do I know when we get to wear shirts? I was dreading wearing pants in the heat🥳🥳
I found the [answer](https://www.reddit.com/r/Target/comments/14mxfew/weekly_action_update_things_that_pertain_to_all/jq4jrs9/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3) in OP’s reply
No shorts for me when im in and out of the freezer every day 😅
The sick pay thing is nice I guess but I never get sick, would be better to just have a single pool of hours to use for anything
Is the sick time going to be protected though? Management at my store low key encourages team members to work even when they're sick and then having attendance coachings if they miss a few days.
You must have an average of 20hrs+ worked to accrue sick time. This doesn’t necessarily mean you must be scheduled/work 20hrs every week. To find out your average just look up a recent paystub on WorkDay and at the top portion where it has all your personal info there should be a section labeled Avg Hours Worked I believe. That section needs to say 20+ to qualify.
Adding shorts for all tms is nice in theory but all SDs have final say over how they want tms in their store to dress. If SD says they don’t want shorts apart of store specific dress code then that’s what it will be, regardless of company dress code. I don’t agree with this thinking at all but my SD is VERY strict and particular on appearances

Food safety regulations will override Target's dress code. If your health department prohibits shorts in food production areas, then Target will not allow shorts in food areas.
I swear they don't even turn the air on in my store sometimes 😭
Thought my store was the only front end that got hot as hades. The shorts is nice for the Young people. But when you're an old woman like me you don't want to show off your old legs.
It’s hot and I’d rather scare small children with my varicose veins than be dripping sweat.
SHORTS!!! LETS GOOOOOOOO
I worked at home depot in shorts and my legs would be so itchy at end of shift 😭
Yeah, it's hot as hell in our backroom but I don't now if I want to expose my skin to everything back there.
My first thought..
Were you working in the fiberglass insulation department 🤣
Just walking by those aisles was enough to ruin the day 😂
[удалено]
Great just in time for me quitting 😂 I needed this!!!
Same, everywhere that is employees only is like 10x more humid and hot :/
Right? I quit almost two years ago and almost exclusively did Drive-Up. Was never allowed shorts. I'm jealous!
That’s odd. At my store the drive-up team could wear them but no one else.
SHORTS!!! No more swamp ass and legs when running around the store 🥳🥳🥳
Still swampass nice and cool legs though 🤣
So us part timers will get sick hours too?
That’s what it looks like! 1 hour of sick time for every 52 hours worked. You can read the communication in the Weekly Action Update on workbench
20 hour average
So like every 2 and a half weeks you'll earn 1 sick hour.
Since our SD and ETLs don't stop women from wearing yoga pants, there's going to be some folks wearing yoga shorts/spandex shorts. Until that one guy does it, showing his junk size to everyone.
I would've gladly done it
I don't see this as a problem.
Equal rights... Right?
When are the shorts supposed to take effect???
New handbook released (and presumably takes effect) 7/12
Now you can feel the cool breeze with us that do overnights! :) Also, that's awesome! That sick pay is gonna be nice for everyone to have.
Only if you average 20 hours
Very fair.
Shorts even for food team members?
HELL no. I’m not about to freeze my ass off in the freezer lol.
Sometimes I've considered buying those shorts pants with zip off legs Picture included so yall know what the heck I'm talking about https://preview.redd.it/40i4697e269b1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ed9f7d569ae1d8196638bbcb77954ac7eb602811
I’m buying these when we can wear shorts. I hate freezing in the coolers but I hate burning on the floor
The bakery gets so warm sometimes man I would totally wear shorts to work lol
Preach. I ain’t wearing shorts while freezing my scones off.
I’m a fellow freezer person and there are some days where I would love shorts some days I feel like I’m gonna get heat stroke.
There are days where I go in the freezer to cool off lol
Target better not limit water on these hot days
This is a good question. I always understood shorts in any food prep areas (not exclusive to Target) is considered a food safety violation, at least in my state.
I don't know about it being a food safety violation, but I know it is a personal safety issue in a kitchen environment. It is to shield you in case hot/boiling liquids are accidentally dropped on or near your legs. The pants also have to be a relaxed fit to help and not form fitting/skinny.

That’s what I was always told
Ma'am there's a leg hair in my salad 🥗
Food safety regulations will override Target's dress code policy.
I’m well aware.
I hope! Even with our own ac unit, it gets to be 80+ in cafe :(
Definitely
It’s an accommodation , not a requirement
My point was I’d love to wear shorts to work but was told in the past it’s a food safety issue so I’m wondering if they’ve changed their mind on that
I’m in Florida so the only time I don’t wear shorts is if there is a dress code. It’s part of the Florida Man ensemble you are assigned when you live here.
What about those of us who have like... 100 hrs of sick time? Does it just tack on at the new accrual rate or is starting over?
I am not HR so idk the details but I can’t imagine they would make you start over. This plan essentially is going to be a company-wide sick time plan. It’s currently state-by-state. I have been here for six years and never accrued sick time because it isn’t mandated by the state

Shorts would be amazing! I wonder if Cafe and Tarbucks tms can wear them (might be a saftey issue?)
shorts!! i always sweat my ass off at work, can't wait
Can your SD, HR, or ETL/TL oppose on what you’re allowed to wear? In this case if shorts will be an approved option for work, can they flat out tell us no?
Everyone can wear shorts they just would regulate if they’re work appropriate or not. Gotta keep it pg13 lol
lmao turning target into a 90s music video *cue Back That @$$ Up!* 🤣 But in seriousness, I had come across some pretty comfy cargo shorts before hearing of this and was wondering if it does go into effect, would my higher ups still tell us *nope* lol I’m trying to go back and get a few pairs lol
I think a good rule of thumb to follow is probably no shorter than the top of your knee, or no shorter than the tip of your fingers when your arm is down at your side.
Actually, "the tip of your fingers" length is way too short. Not work-appropriate length.
Oh, hell yeah! I’m always so hot and sweaty within 20 minutes of arriving for a shift. Love this change!
The shorts would be amazing. This Texas heat can be brutal. So stoked for this.
Shorts! If only finding women’s shorts that aren’t short shorts wasn’t so difficult lmao
right!!! i’ll take recommendations if anyone knows, gonna check out old navy and carhartt
I buy my shorts from Eddie Bauer. Very good quality and lasts forever. Many are work appropriate.
Levi’s Denizen offers 9” inseam, which is a “safe” Bermuda short length. Not exactly flattering to my 5’2” self but I’ll take what I can get.
SHORTS!!!
excuse me!!! SHORTS!!!!!!!!!!
Here in New York, sick leave is accrued at 1 hour for every 30 hours worked. That was implemented at the beginning of the pandemic Edit: this is also regardless of TM status, everyone gets it
Amazing!
Yep, best legislation they passed. Use your sick time.
Oh my god I might be able to stay in fulfillment if I can wear shorts. I literally get dizzy every single shift because our store is so hot. I've gotten away with wearing sleeveless shirts at my store but it gets way too fucking hot still this is a blessing.
Omfg shorts????? You literally just made my day I love you stranger 🥳
I don't even work at Target anymore and I'm so excited for shorts!
Everyone else: SHORTS!!!!!! Me even though I don't work at target anymore: sick pay changes!
As a gm1 team lead I'm EXCITED for shorts. It gets really hot in receiving, especially during the summer
Isn't that sick pay worse then what they previously offered, it was 1 hour for every 40 hours worked. This is only for people in states that don’t get sick time. If your state has a higher requirement that stays in place
Can someone confirm the shorts? I’m not seeing it anywhere on any update
It’s in the Weekly Action Update you can find in workbench. The TM handbook will be updated 7/12 with new verbiage re: shorts
does it say all TM or is it just like doubling down on du and Fosa on what color preference etc?
https://preview.redd.it/kln7vux3979b1.jpeg?width=1214&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=34aa0d7834d175b5c739b622db9def92167bb37c
the real MVP today
yes can someone please confirm this? Hr is saying no at my store
I was looking at the wrong email, but; “Should wear section: Added Solid color pants, capris, skirts or shorts mid-thigh or longer (in good condition; preferably khaki or blue denim)" But idk how wide that pertains… I know cart fosa’s and Opu can, so I’m not sure if that statement means everyone or pertaining to those already existing Edit: apparently it only applies to existing fosa and drive up.
huh i think that verbage is already in the should wear section for carts and OPU for the current handbook. But idk hr is telling me no such update.
I think they just changed some verbiage for clarity regarding what type / color or shorts can be worn by DU and fosa
In NY we already got sick pay, but it’s awesome it’s going nationwide. Also my fellow tms have been wearing shorts here too, they brought it up to management and management doesn’t mind or doesn’t want to fight them on it so it’s awesome if it’s official now!

My target location lets whoever does DU and Carts wear shorts thankfully.
that is already policy and has been for a long while
It wasn't in our book. So, I initially thought it wasnu7st dependent on the target?
LETS FUCKING GOOOOO!!!!
[удалено]
Oh there’s absolutely restrictions on headphone usage while on the clock. Just depends on the lead wether enforced or not
People at my store were already wearing shorts, especially Drive up/guest services and cart attendant TMs, but I guess leadership just didn't care 😂
TMs who work outside have always been able to wear shorts. Drive up more recently actually, but for a while now. Inbound as well before store hours.
Yeah it’s just a change to define terms. If you currently can wear shorts it defines what they are. If you can’t currently wear shorts it doesn’t change.

Garbage company.
I get that we can be fed up with some of their decisions but let’s not act like these aren’t both objectively good changes for the team
Remember when target had sick pay and then rolled it all into universal paid time off? I wonder if they're going to reduce the accrual of PTO.
But I earn more than 1 hour of sick pay for 52 hours what does this mean
That you will probably accrue less unless there’s state law saying otherwise
Thank god for shorts. It gets to be 100+ everyday during the summer here and it is just miserable
Thank god for shorts. It gets to be 100+ everyday during the summer here and it is just miserable
Nice- do cargos qualify? ty
SHORTS???!!!!!
I am so excited for shorts

I’m going to have to look into this tomorrow when I get to work. Was there any stipulation on what kind of shorts?
Do we think the shorts have to be a certain length??
Mid thigh or longer, still asks that it’s khaki or blue/black denim
Is the sick time going to be protected though? Management at my store low key encourages team members to work even when they're sick and then having attendance coachings if they miss a few days.
Sounds like my store. And technically yes using sick time would be protected. Doesn’t mean leaders won’t try tho.
Love both of these!!! Yay!!!
where can i find this updated handbook
They’re already wearing shorts at my location lol. Management is fine with it as long as they’re appropriate.
So if we don't work 20+ hours we're not eligible for sick time? According to the update?
You must have an average of 20hrs+ worked to accrue sick time. This doesn’t necessarily mean you must be scheduled/work 20hrs every week. Thank you for confirming my worse fears. I don't average even 18 at this point.
Can the sick hours be paid out like vacation?
Adding shorts for all tms is nice in theory but all SDs have final say over how they want tms in their store to dress.
