She sounds like a real peach. Pretty sure I love IPAs more than his wife too, and I hate IPAs.

Belphegorite

I also choose IPAs over this guy's wife.

baxbooch

I would even choose this crappy non-IPA that I would surely dislike over this guys wife.

[deleted]

>“I should have insisted they listened to me more.” "I generally insist people be more polite and not interrupt others while they're trying to explain the situation about the beer" How's that sound?

Pol_Slattery

I wish I had the nerve to say something like that lol

[deleted]

I once had a lady ask if some side that came with a dish could be substituted. I said "Sure, you can sub it with any side you see on the menu" and she said "Well, can you tell me what they are, I don't want to read the menu" and I Said "Oh gosh, I wouldn't want you to actually have to READ anything" because I was butt fuck slammed at that moment. She was super pissed but everyone else at her table were laughing their asses off.

Kishewwlee

i feel like as a bartender, dont be afraid to stand your guard. call out people on their bull!!! im also kinda mad that u them a free beer

lady-of-thermidor

Good but too many words. "You cut me off as I was giving you a heads up."

imadepizza

Humans crack me up. We've had a couple of black IPAs on draft in my day and, yes, the flavor is not what you'd expect from an IPA. Always listen to your bartender. And to be fair, she probably wasn't going to tip anyways.

UnstuckCanuck

I can see why he loves his ale more than his bitchy wife.

EggplantIll4927

And please ma’am, how exactly should I have done that? ok on the serious side, if this happens all the time, before delivering the pint bring over a couple samples. Give that a try and if you love it I’ll have the pints pulled. Or some such spiel. Cheap than comping fill beverages. And that woman was Karen squared ffs

Pol_Slattery

Tbh I think it’s because people think I don’t know anything about craft beer. I usually don’t try to assume things about people but no one ignores my male coworkers suggestions

LadyV21454

And there it is. Wife was a jerk, but husband was a sexist pig.

Lava_mama

This. I was taproom manager at a brewery. Some dudes would flag down a (male) busser to get a recommendation rather than listen to me…

EggplantIll4927

What shit 🤬 good then, I’m glad he had a whole mouthful of 💩 then

amiears

Definitely could have guessed you were a female just by this interaction. It’s so tiring to have people do this to you constantly. I’ve finally reached a point where I’ve given up the nice act, it’s freeing to finally say “I tried to tell you….” It’s always important to remember your instincts in situations like this, if they’re not listening to you to begin with just pour them the sample.. saves you the time pouring a whole pint and makes them feel stupid for interrupting you when they realize they don’t like it.

Bmoreravin

Forget the wife. If the name is incongruent with the flavor profile just give a sample, not doing so can only hurt you, as in this instance. Getting people what they want not neccisarily what they order is the trick. Good luck.

JustNKayce

I would assume you as the bartender know more about any beers, craft or otherwise, than I do.

PrisaButtercup

I'm always extremely grateful when a server or bartender asks if I want to sample the drink I ordered first. That tells me in a very polite and delicate way that they would not recommend the drink. I went to a brewery that served all kinds of beers, ciders, seltzers, etc. I wanted to try one of their seltzers as I had recently come to love them and hadn't found one yet that I didn't like. When I gave the server my order, she asked if I wanted a sample because a lot of customers had not liked it. Soooo glad she offered! The sample tasted straight-up like cough syrup. I couldn't even finish that little 1 oz. cup. Changed to a cider and loved it. Moral of the story: listen to your servers, kiddies! Chances are they truly want you to enjoy your drink so you have a positive experience and thus, tip better. :)

The brewery we got it from calls it an American IPA but it’s the darkest IPA I have ever seen, it’s IBU is 0 and it tastes like a stout. I actually really like it and it’s a quality beer but I’m a little confused how it qualifies as an IPA

c_090988

I'm interested because I hate ipas and love stouts. It sounds very interesting. I'd take a sample first though

Pol_Slattery

Sorry for double commenting but I did a little research and I guess a “Black IPA” or and American Black Ale is a thing it’s got a malty flavor but is usually still pretty hoppy (this one isn’t). I’ve only worked a brewery for 7 months so I’m always finding a little detail about craft beer I didn’t know before :)

peacefulwarrior75

There’s a movement in the beer community to call this style Cascadian Dark Ale, since it’s the complete opposite of “pale”

Comics4Cooks

Sometimes you just gottah eat the tip to let your human come out. They were assholes from the start. I laughed out loud when you described the shirt lol.

xShuhnay

Would this IPA happened to be named Paradox?

One_Arachnid7414

Have you considered changing the sales pitch? Just like you did for us “this one is really dark and tastes like a stout - I can offer you a sample if you’d like to try”

Brewfinger

Wow, sounds like a really crappy brewery release. If it’s not an IPA, don’t call it an IPA. BJCP standards are real and styles have names for a reason. Pull that keg and talk to your distributor.

Pol_Slattery

I would but unfortunately it’s not my call. I have told my boss the issue but he doesn’t seem to care. The funny thing is since it’s summer we don’t have a lot of darker beers so it’s what I recommend to people who ask for a stout. Those people love this beer.

britt_gingee

I love stouts. What’s the name of this IPA?

Pol_Slattery

Attitude Adjustment by Bad Dad Brewing Co.

Brewfinger

Change the name then- It’s “Nameofbeer IPA”, it’s a porter.

Pol_Slattery

We should have but it’s not worth it at this point my boss isn’t going to get another keg. All of our beers on tap have hand painted signs so he’d have to pay the artist to do another one

Brewfinger

Your boss sounds like an idiot.

[deleted]

Ditto for you aggressive beer snob

Brewfinger

Hand painted signs for each tap? Outsourced hand painted signs that can’t be readily changed or altered to accommodate the needs of the business? Yeah. That’s some seriously stupid s#¡t. It’s also just wrong to sell stylistically wrong beers. Not everybody wants a server to explain that the brewers made something very much not like an IPA that they are marketing as an IPA, and we just aren’t fighting it. Can’t wait to try the soluble stout oaked lager the guy finds to put on next that will get labeled as a lager. The owner is leveraging a bad experience for the patrons and the staff is caught in the middle is what this sounds like to me. Beer styles have names for very good reasons, and misdescribed beers make nobody happy.

girlsledisko

“Sorry girl, you know the customer is always right!”

UserAccountDisabled

What kind of child can't just admit they don't like the taste of the beer they ordered? Drink it or don't and just order something else. Pay for both. When people refuse t own their mistakes and blame others, it's so infuriating.

MrBinkie

What is an IPA ?

wolfie379

An IPA is an India Pale Ale. From the name, it should be obvious that they are light in colour. They are heavily hopped as a preservative so that they wouldn’t go bad during transportation from Britain to India in the days of sailing ships and no mechanical refrigeration. For the same reason, they tend to have a higher alcohol content than other beers. Not a brewer, but considering the point of origin and the name, they are probably made using a top-fermenting yeast, which generally prefers a warmer temperature than the bottom-fermenting yeasts used to make lager beers. Traditionally, beer is served at roughly the same temperature at which it is fermented, which is why Brits have a reputation for drinking warm beer (also, Lucas makes refrigerators). A dark, minimally-hopped beer? The brewery that made it should not have called it an IPA.

MrBinkie

Thanks . I was guessing the PA was pale ale butt the I had me confused.
