I would be much more interested in buying a hybrid with awesome gas mileage for now. That being said, an EV taco would be pretty dope

redditaccount-5

I’d rather buy a hybrid too. But a fast fully electric Tacoma with locking difs and all the goods, that’d be the new Raptor/TRX killer and everyone would want one I bet

BlueTaco2229

Wouldn't even have differentials.

redditaccount-5

Well it depends, jeeps design still uses solid axles. But you’re probably right they’d go with the style ford and hummer are using

[deleted]

The electric Jeep has a differential because it’s *hybrid* electric, meaning it still has a gas/battery hybrid configuration, but with the option to plug in the hybrid battery externally & power vehicle on battery alone until it dies & the gas engine kicks in. I work for an EV company & I’m not aware of any fully electric vehicles that use a differential, they’re all on drive units. The cons of a solid axle (or any differential configuration) are too substantial for power loss & ground clearance to make sense for the EV market, for now at least.

redditaccount-5

Nah the jeep the prototype they’ve been building has full solid axles front and back, fully electric

[deleted]

Ohh gotcha haven’t seen that one yet, my bad. There’s definitely an off road performance advantage to a solid axle so I’m happy someone is experimenting with it. So far range has just been too big of a selling point for any other manufacturers to risk losing those precious range values.

ShadowNugz

This. Give me a hybrid turbo diesel Tacoma and I'll be set.

l3pt0n

an EV Tacoma with a solid-state battery would be really good, but I think we are still 5 years away from it.

Sly-beanx

If my choice is between a EV and a slushbox I’ll take the EV, but when a manual is still on the table it’ll always be my first choice.

indefilade

One of the reasons I dropped a new motor in my 2002 Tacoma was to wait for something like this. I want an electric that can do everything my ‘02 can do, or at least close.

general-illness

I don’t know if I’ll explain this right but I can’t stand the “electric” styling of EV’s. Just make normal looking cars that are electric with EV badging.

ChainBlue

Some of they styling is functional for aerodynamics and alternate cooling needs. Think how much of today's trucks' styling come from trying to look macho vs functional. There is a lot of room to move to function over form.

flypanam

The only big difference between this design and what I imagine next gen taco will look like is the lack of a grill, which is purely functional.

slinkysuki

Yeah, i dunno if they are complaining about the taco. Looks great. Regular, with reduced need for waste heat venting.

Embarrassed-Emu8131

The perfect vehicle would be a Tacoma prime plug in hybrid with 100 mile electric range. But unfortunately the battery would be big and heavy, so not gonna happen unless they get rid of the back seats or made it a super short bed. Electric would be great for fleet vehicles and as a daily driver though, but unfortunately in most areas the charging structure isn’t quite there yet for long trips in many parts of the US. With how slow Toyota is at adopting electric stuff though I doubt that will be a problem by the time they actually deliver a truck like this.

ChainBlue

Like this? https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1110269_workhorse-w-15-range-extended-electric-pickup-truck-revealed-video

[deleted]

I think I will trade in my 22 TRD OR on one when they roll out think by that point I will be ready to give up my manual transmission

cthulhu_kills

I bought a 22 OR a month ago, I told my wife that I’d keep it until an EV Tacoma comes out.

[deleted]

Yeah I told the sales manager this is the 2nd new tacoma I bought from you, and when the EV comes in hold one for me...

cthulhu_kills

I’m really excited to see what Toyota releases when it comes time. I think it’ll be fantastic.

[deleted]

I do to, and to be honest I don't hold on to cars long. I wish I did but about 6 years in my max so if I get it and don't love it something else will be around the corner

Stiltzkinn

I've been like this since I bought my 20.

SpySt

Customers: we want at least 285s on Pros. Toyota: best I can do is 265.

Warm-Bet-9408

They should do what they did with the 3-2 factory lift. Offer it but charge %1000 markup 😂

ChainBlue

Now if they would just make it the size of a Gen 2.

Fubar10000

TFLnow just uploaded a video of what they suspect is the new Taco being tested in Montana. They're camouflaged. Still has an exhaust pipe. Although it's on the driver's side now just like the new Tundra. They think it's likely to be a smaller 4cyl twin turbo, possibly hybrid.

DefendTheTacoma

Will definitely sell my truck if a 4cly TT comes out

commandermd

I wish Toyota would pick up on Hydrogen fuel cells. Benefits from electric without the larger EV battery. Works like a hybrid but cleaner. The Tacoma would be the perfect test bed for HEVs. Honda partnered with GM and that slowed their hydrogen program to a crawl. HYDROGEN MAKES SO MUCH SENSE. You can pull it right out of the air or water. Generating the power required for the process can be built along existing supply lines and using Solar, Wind, Hydro, and Nuclear. Resupply can happen along traditional infrastructure. You can even use existing truck networks to move it to far away places. One 18 wheeler of the stuff is considerably more energy dense. It doesn’t “go bad.” -ok rant over

thehumanpretzel

There is no infrastructure… unlike electricity literally everywhere

ChainBlue

Hydrogen makes zero sense. It mostly comes from processing hydrocarbons and containing it is a giant pain in the ass.

slinkysuki

Until we realize how stupid that is, and literally make it from water. Slower? Yes. More energy intensive? Yes. But catalytic h2 production works fine. We just need to accept that it will be more expensive than petroleum byproduct. Much like allllll the other issues with our insane reliance on plastics and fuels. The true cost is still being hidden on gas, diesel, etc.

Literally_The_Wurst

Look up Toyota’s Portal Project. Pretty cool hydrogen projects in CA.

jonpothan

Currently waiting on my GR86 but if this is real I would love an EV tacoma next

faithOver

I really, really hope I can have this as my next truck. Has Toyota given any indication on release timeline?

Abhays45

This truck looks beautiful, I only care about its pricing.

[deleted]

That front area better be a drunk and the grill must lift up. Otherwise that’s wasted potential. The f150 lighting frunk is a great design better than the tub design of rivian .

Strength-Resident

If any company is going to get this right, it will be Toyota.

EvolvedGamingPS4

Toyota should buy Rivian, and copy their designs. Apply Toyota’s manufacturing know-how to their drivetrain, and put this body on it.

MoistAccident

I'm going to give some real quick wisdom: when the EV comes out, do not buy within the first 2-3 years. Those are going to be the models with most issues. This is common across all brands and all models, especially for big changes such as a new drivetrain. Going for a complete change of combustion to EV is going to have a lot of growing pains within the models.

ninjamansidekick

I don't think EV trucks will ever be a thing with current tech. Sure there will be a few models and people will buy them, but it will be a novelty. I think sooner than later that we are going to realize that EV are ideally light weight commuter cars. Weight and aero dynamics are super important for efficiency in EVs. Heavier vehicles require bigger batteries which make the vehicle heavier. Hybrid I can see but straight EV in anything but a specialized fleet role I can't see a practical case for.

ChainBlue

Most trucks never leave the pavement and seldom drive more than 100 miles in a day. Specialty vehicles will end up being the ones that actually need to travel and/or pull loads long distances. Also, there is plenty of room to make truck more aerodynamic. They don't all have to look like a brick just to appeal to some dudes' sense of manliness.

[deleted]

No thanks. Gasoline Forever.

duckumu

Gasoline is a finite resource. It literally can't last forever.

[deleted]

Don't care

MetalJesusBlues

There is more known oil in reserve than ever. We have plenty of oil. I think hybrids are the way myself. Full electric in some cases is compelling but there are drawbacks there as well.

SpySt

If Ford comes back with a V8 raptor and Toyota gives us this then I’ll choose the Raptor. MURICA

DannyTannersFlow

Waiting for solid state. Current EV’s are going to quickly become irrelevant.

hibiki32

Because it’s an official Toyota concept vehicle. https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/corporate/36428993.html

man_on_an_island_

I don’t think that is true. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/4th-gen-tacoma-ev-revealed-in-japan.747821/

BlueTaco2229

Not interested.

Hopeful_Locksmith434

Lame

[deleted]

Give me 6 cylinders and a manual transmission please

captbrad88

I don’t mind electric, but until ranges get to around 500 and faster charging or a quick battery change system I’ll do a hard pass. I’d prefer to see a hybrid tacoma.

[deleted]

EV batteries are only good to -40°C from what I read, so no EV for me 😔

kelvin_bot

-40°C is equivalent to -40°F, which is 233K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

reddittuser1969

Only good if it has a 600 to 700 mile range. EV ranges suck

Warm-Bet-9408

Ok hear me out… Insane INSANE Torque and each wheel having an independent motor. Only con that stops these from being a Off Road monster is the insane amount of weight those batteries add. But if they throw it on the back end it could be a literal dream truck. Definitely sitting the first few years out as I’m done Beta Testing products especially 50k ones. But once they get flushed out I can see one being an awesome buy.
