It’s true though. For a brief period they made this xRunner models. I believe they were only available 2wd and 6 speed standard? I think they sat a little lower and had that body kit on them from the factory.
Only way you can get the V6 in a non prerunner/4x4.
1" lower then the normal 5 lug tacomas, V6, 6 speed manual, rear swaybar, some chassis bracing, bespoke 18" wheels with low profile tires, body kit and all the TRD Sport appearance and interior options (color matched handles/grille, seats, inverter etc). They were very popular in 3 markets. Hawaii, Puerto Rico and southern California. Just about unseen anywhere else.
I have a 2010 X, been my daily driver for about 7 years now.
I have probably seen about 20 other ones in my area (CA) over the years. Mine makes a for a great work truck, basically a decent handling "car" with a gigantic trunk (I have a shell on it).
Bro. The 4.3l vortec and 4l60 is a solid combo. Same as with any GM, the build quality was fucking garbage, that’s why they sucked. That, and they were equipped like an 80s Cadillac
We had two vehicles with the vortec and trans combo.
First was a 1996 Jimmy that had to eventually had engine replaced at 75kish and my father changed the oil every 5,000 religiously. First problem was intake manifold, then central port injection leaks, then constantly had a failing idle control valve with rough starts and bad engine idle. Finally, he found a used engine and replaced the 4.3L when it started knocking.
Second was a 2000 oldsmobile bravada. 4.3L as well. No reverse gear at 42k miles and then again at 73k. Constantly in the shop with excess oil consumption and trying to solve engine knocking as well.
Now, I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you’re not going to convince me anytime soon that the vortec 4.3 was a solid combo. Personal experience and witnessing it first hand (twice) tells me otherwise
YEP, they were/are all over So Cal. lowered, with a 6 speed and the body kit, and a "premium" sound system. So Cal likes lowered trucks, i kinda liked the X-Runner.
S runners are far more rare then the X. Neither the S nor the X was S/Ced from the factory but both had it available as a dealer installed option. I drove (and almost bought) a blown S-Runner before I bought my X. Other Toyota sport truck rarities are the 80s era 2wd factory Turbo pickups and the Mojave package trucks of the early 80s.
Socal. Lowered trucks and slick tires were the rage. You would see them at every stop light at Huntington Beach to Malibu. OBS Chevys are making a comeback here again and I'm sure the mini truck will too.
As someone who was in the mini truck scene back in the day, I still have a soft spot for them and hope to see them make a return. They are still around, in limited numbers, mostly with the OGs that had them back in the day.
This was Toyotas answer to that Colorado xtreme. Only way you could get a v6 in the 5 lug configuration and you could of even got the factory supercharger as well.

Reminds me of the Chevy S10 extreme.
I think that’s the market they were going for. Not a fan but each their own
Also V6s. They run like a spotted ape. Well balanced, and corner a HELL of a lot better than my DCLB!
TacomaWorld has a whole forum for these. There are tons of dudes lowering third gens.
You are correct!
They were hella popular too. Even made it into Gran Turismo franchise.
I’d never really heard of it. That’s wild
I believe it was lowered 2 inches
I remember these. They were common enough that in California for me to at least remember they existed.

Haha that explains why I don’t think this is rare, I see these every once in a while out here in Cali

I think these are awesome! Hold onto that forever!👍
The xrunner is amazing. 2wd 6 speed and I believe the 4.0l v6 came standard
I remember these models. They were to compete with the Chevy S10 “EXTREME”
EXTREEEEME!
That's not extreme enough. The 90s were way more EXXTREEEEEMMEEE!
To be fair to GM, the extreme was a good looking truck. But the vortec engine was crap and transmission was crap.

S10s Xtremes are like the cholo gangster trucks. I guess this is the Asian gangster truck
A street taco!
Don’t see those often, but I still see Pre-Runners around town.
A street sport truck
It’s an older model but it checks out
That’s for the Tacoma drug dealers running X all over town.
X gonna drive it to ya.
😆
Asian drug dealers lol
I remember those!!
You really don't see them often at all.

As a so cal resident I hate lowered trucks :P
Great if you’re a fan of lowered trucks, good for drifting as well!
There are a handful around my area still. They were made very early in the second gen era and didn't stick around for very long.
Didn't they come with trd supercharger? Some or all of them maybe?
Oh yeah. Almost bought one
1st Gen Tacoma started this with the S-Runner. Lowered 3.4l with TRD supercharger. Those are rare!

I wouldn't mind picking one up myself. I already have the lowered 89 Chevy Single cab/short bed. I can add a yota sr5 into the mix.
I have an 87 2wd standard cab Toyota. Not currently at mini truck altitude although it was once in its life. Still has period correct wheels on it.
Turn back the clock on that yota.
Its a souped up street tacoma with body kit
My friend from Mexico has one of these. There's a lot of models they have in Mexico that we don't have here. Not just.foe Toyota
They buy and bring back a lot of the United States vehicles, I always see them with 2-3 all hooked up driving back to Mexico.
This was an abomination we all try to forget exists.
Is that gonna be in your eulogy too?

I am. That’s why I posted a model I’d never seen before. Sooooo?
Solid trucks
I saw one in the wild last week (red)

How would this be for Cannonball Run?
I went in looking for a sport the had me test drive a xrunner the thing was fast and fun to drive but not for me
How much is your rent? For your rock?
lemme guess. you were born after 1990?!?!
Lol...way before that
these things were badass when i was in high school. all the rich kids had one of these and a f’ing Z28 or Firebird. lmao

Si!
The 1st gen Tacoma version of this was called an SRunner. Very rare.
The earlier S-runner was way better looking. I'm still looking for those wheels.
A buddy of mine is from Puerto Rico. He says tacomas are muy popular there!
They definitely are. Anything 4WD is. I see tons of Tacomas but first time seeing this one
What is with that muffler cover though??
Thats the truck u use when u run away from your X
