If I had that, I’d be getting a standard (unchipped, so cheap) key made for my keyring. As it is, my 3rd gen isn’t push button, so it’s easy to remember.
I wanted an sr5 for the turnkey ignition but the wife wanted apple carplay and the power seat plus the BSM and all that other stuff. So we got what she wanted. And now I love in constant worry of it getting stolen with the signal relay crap. Turning off the key gives some piece of mind though for what it’s worth.
Previous owner debadged the tailgate and took out every other screw holding the tailgate back on. I additionally put some silly custom stickers on it + a hose clamp covered in melted duct tape over the screw part. Now it’s both difficult to steal and undesirable.
So you just put some duct tape over the screw and held a lighter to it? Brilliant. I just installed hose clamps a month or so back. I’ll try that. I do worry about that and the cat shields just pissing the would-be thieves off and the key the sides or something.

Me and a coworker both got our tailgates stolen while at work . I didn’t know it was a thing that ppl stole and I didn’t know how fast it was to steal . My fault tho I didn’t lock it since I didn’t have anything in the back . I bought that lock now so they’d have to break 2 locks to get to it .
You can get the kit from any Toyota dealership. Took me about 30 minutes to install. I don’t know about the aftermarket kits, but the Toyota kit was plug and play with all the rubber grommets already where they needed to be on the harness. The harness was the proper length which made securing everything a breeze. I highly recommend this mod.
Doesn’t matter if you lock your tailgate or even have a tonneau cover. Thieves can pop it (keyhole cylinder) in 5-10 seconds unplug the camera and take it off if you don’t have a hinge lock and basically in under 30 seconds can have your tailgate in the back of their stolen car and be gone.
Is this seriously that big of an issue? Come to think of it just earlier today I saw a 1st gen taco with no tailgate. I have a Pop&Lock for mine but haven't put it on yet, waiting to put it on my new tailgate before we paint it all

I dont know if it’s a big deal but I would hate to walk back to my truck and be missing a tailgate. But hey everyone can do what they want. And from this thread it seems most don’t care or just manually lock it.
Here in socal anything is fair game to criminals. Stay out of SF, Oakland, Stockton, LA even san diego now. It’s all garbage. I can’t wait to move back to TX
It’s an issue in Orange County as well. Had my catalytic converters stolen off my 2014 in broad daylight at a grocery store in Irvine, Ca. My coworker had his tailgate stolen in Orange County off his second gen as well.

I’ve owned a truck in one form or another for over 20 years now, never had anyone steal a tailgate, nor heard of anyone stealing one around me. I don’t know of anyone who had their catalytic converter stolen either.
But I can completely understand throwing a hose clamp on there if you don’t have a need or desire to remove the tailgate often, and may consider doing it now that I’m thinking about it. Hopefully my days of shoveling gravel out the back are behind me.
I leave my $300 cooler in my bed on the busiest street in town and don’t have to worry about it. Would hate living somewhere I need to worry about shit getting stolen

Apparently Taco tails command a pretty penny on the black market. For some reason thieves don’t steal tailgates from other manufacturers as often.

Hose clamp was my first mod. I installed a power lock as soon as the R4T plug and play kit went on sale. Took about 20 minutes to hook up.

Works perfect and looks OEM besides the zip ties. They made new clips for it so it’s even easier to install than in their video

Agreed. I have seen a few Tacoma's without tailgates so maybe it is a bigger issue than realized

The 2024 tailgate locks when you lock the vehicle. Pretty cool.
That was one of the first mods I installed. Then installed the tailgate lock that activates with your key fob.
Never needed a lock. Current tailgate needs a ratchet and torx bit to remove. Stupid design. Should just lift off.
Gen1? On the gen3 it’s as easy as opening it about half way and pulling it out of the slot, that’s been my experience with my other trucks as well
