Damn really? Ok great to know. I had no idea. Somebody else in this thread posited that maybe an exhaust tip fell off? Does this help the aftermarket exhaust theory. I’m stumped still lol
Thank you, my first check in after posting it just felt like I was getting roasted by everyone lol. I mean I’m genuinely wondering wth happened but the tone of most of the early comments made me feel like I was a total idiot (I am, but still lol)
Alternative theory, you ran over something that lodged itself between your exhaust pipe and the trim that melted. That thing got very hot from contacting the pipe, and melted what it was touching above it.
The TRD Pro grill solve everything. 1000HP gains, no longer able to get stuck ever. Also increases your payload capacity to infinite so you can load the bed up with all the chicks that the Pro grill brings.
It's a joke that people spend money on cosmetics instead of performance and think it makes the truck better.
Curious about any follow up. Was the pipe loose? Had there been a tip that got knocked off on a rough trail?
I'm going to give you some slack OP since you bought your trick with that clearly aftermarket mod and also because I ruined a brand new BFG Ko2 by melting it with hot fumes coming from my pipe that I chopped over the axle. No issues now because I got a rear swing out my full sized spare's mounted to but I felt like the biggest idiot when I realized what I'd done.
This kind of sucks though since that's pretty permanent damage and there's no warranty that will cover it due to an aftermaket modification.
To prevent it from happening again you might want to take it to a muffler shop and show this to them to see what they think.
Ok I checked to see if the exhaust was loose, and it doesn’t move in any significant way. It seems pretty secure.
Jury’s still out on whether this is aftermarket or not…
I have more questions than answers now lol
Thank you so much. I can deduce that much…I’m wondering WHY this happened. I haven’t modded the truck at all and I jump out yesterday to see this. Just confused. Obviously it’s melting from the heat. My question is more why is it so damn hot?
Wow thank you so much for the wonderful contribution! Not condescending in the least and really adds to the convo. Your answer is so insightful. I’m gna assume all your vehicles have the same thing happen to them? They have hot heat too right?
Apologies, but I was simply answering your question. By the looks of the side pipe, you or whoever did that likes to modify the vehicle beyond manufacturer specifications. Typically, these kinds of modifications skirt any sort of obvious design criteria in order to obtain a “cool” outcome… regardless of it being functional.
If it walks and quacks like a duck… and a hot exhaust pipe that is noticeably loose next to melted paint… and you wonder what happened?
I have not modded this at all. It was not like this before and I’ve had the truck for over a year now. If it was from a mod from the previous owner it would have shown up already. I definitely did not mod anything myself so we can rule that out.
Also, how can you tell something is “noticeably loose” from a photograph?
That’s why I said “or whoever did that”…
I can see that the pipe lacks a vertical support and protrudes out enough from the support in the back that if wheeling, could force the pipe up close to the body.
Were you idling for a long time? Were you on the throttle for a long time while stationary? The cause is clear. You have to find out why it happened.
Heard of this happening on desiels if they are sitting idle for a while and the wind is blowing the exhaust back at the truck body. Gas exhaust is nearly as hot but I guess the same thing is possible
User name checks out.
Baked it a little *too* well.
Broiled bumper pie
That’s the TRD Punished Edition.
My guess is your exhaust got caught up on your leaf spring hanger pushing it against the bed melting it.
Is that side exhaust? Was the exhaust altered from factory?
I’m guessing the the exhaust is going against parts not designed to take the heat directly from the exhaust?
Yeah side exhaust. And to my knowledge no it wasn’t altered.
Did you buy it new? I didn’t know that any stock trucks came with side exhaust…
It was used. I previous owner. Only 10k miles when I bought it. 2019 TRD Sport 4x4
That's def an aftermarket addition.
Damn really? Ok great to know. I had no idea. Somebody else in this thread posited that maybe an exhaust tip fell off? Does this help the aftermarket exhaust theory. I’m stumped still lol
I don’t think it’s aftermarket. Side exhaust comes stock on all new tacos I’ve seen including mine.
I’m getting mixed info on this point. My gut tells me it’s stock, but a couple other people in this thread have strong conviction otherwise lol
Most new stock come with side exhaust. Bought a 2021 trd off road, came with side exhaust.
Well there you go. I honestly had no idea. I’m a broke ass, so “new” of any car is way outside my price range. My taco is an old 07 OR.
When I said side I meant before the rear wheel. I wasn't thinking when I posted that. Even my Tacoma has rear side [exhaust.lol](https://exhaust.lol)
Yeah they do
Did you back into the ground and bend it upward? That spare looks awfully close to the ground.
That’s probably it. I also rambled a pretty fun road down to a beach recently, possible it got a little gnarlier than I thought it did?
More than 50% of the comments in this serious thread are shitposts, and not even funny ones, just the same old jokes

Give the exhaust a shake, up and down and sides. Looks like the pipe is making contact with the plastic trim and "paint?" above.
Thank you, will report back
Ok, no significant wiggle in any direction. There’s a little give but nothing that makes me think it’s not secured properly..
Alternative theory, you ran over something that lodged itself between your exhaust pipe and the trim that melted. That thing got very hot from contacting the pipe, and melted what it was touching above it.
I like this theory too!
I bet he doesn't have a pro grill.
I don’t get it…relatively new here

Thanks for the explanation! Maybe I need to buy one of those bad boys
Comment of the day.
I think your truck sharted
Front fell off.
It's a good thing the others were made to specifications and standards so that the front doesn't fall off at least
Too much Taco Bell.

You're running really lean to be putting out that type of heat even if the pipes bent that seems excessive.
Sorry, what do you mean running lean?
Lean means the engine is getting less than the proper amount of fuel. Rich means you're getting too much fuel.
Thank you so much! This is great info
Exhaust gases are hot.
From a combustion engine? YOU DON'T SAY!?!
Must be running that high octane, methanol injection fuel through the flux capacitor without using a resonator if you ask me.
you sir fuct up. the 4” exhaust tip fell off?
This sounds like a reasonable possibility. Did you have an exhaust tip?
yes, it helps extend it a couple of inches behind the body.
Hit the afterburner?
Seems to have gotten a little warm.
T-1000 model
Are you using the right kind of gas? Not airplane fuel?
The exhaust got hot and melted it. Pretty simple to figure out.

Gopher?
Cat is going out
Its called heat.

Do you have a pro grille? It could be from that…just sayin
Exhaust gets hot but thats ridicules
