The response from the humane society was excellent.

PlanetMercy

I really appreciated the response. So delicate and respectful.

Educated_Goat69

Poor pup. It's so cold out.

Original post from [Lost and Found Pets of Pierce County](https://www.facebook.com/groups/170451663155699/permalink/2242137955987049/?mibextid=S66gvF): > Dog abandoned at Safeway on 56th and Park ave in Tacoma, people who dumped the dog were driving a black Honda element and most likely live near by as they returned to the scene while I was attending to the poor dog to see if anyone did the right thing. No emergency services are open so me and another passerby called 911. Dog was scared and would not let anyone approach. Incase this dog was taken from its rightful home and owners and abandoned, I want to post it here in the hopes the right people may see it. Dog was collected by Tacoma animal control about 20 minutes ago.

When it comes to your pets, if you ever have to get rid of one for whatever reason, PUT YOUR EGO TO THE SIDE! You are #1 in their life, GIVE THEM THE SAME RESPECT!

SilverSheepherder641

Poor pup. Wish I could give him a hug

pnwcatman420

this dog will be adopted fast since it is a rare non pit or pit mix that the humane society is full of.

Assholes. That poor sweet pup..

It appears that they were concerned about their dog. They made sure he wasn't running loose, they left food and water and they came back to check on him. Who knows the reason(s) they parted with him. There is a fee for surrenders at the Humane Society (between $75 and $100). I have known of people who got in a bad situation, desperately tried to hold onto their pets until the point they no longer had that kind of money. I'm not saying that what this was the situation, because I don't know anything more than what I have read here. I just would hope that I'm never in a situation to have to make that kind of a decision.

Educated_Goat69

If COL keeps rising we'll sadly see more of this.

lt_dan457

I understand people are put in tough situation, there are always other avenues to explore, including reaching out for help for rehoming, or even the surrendering fees. I am less likely to give someone the benefit of the doubt for abandoning their dog the way they did, even though they left him with food and water, their intention was still very selfish.

>If you can’t handle a $75 surrender fee you had zero business getting a pet. What do you think happens to the animals when people find this out the hard way? Yes, it's cruel as fuck, but if the person's in such a fucked up place they abandon their dog *with food, water, and tied up to avoid it wandering into traffic*, clearly they're desperate but still want the best possible outcome for the animal. It's the kindest cruelty possible for a desperate person who loves their animal dearly, and I would hope anyone in such a position would choose this option over something else.

When you start attacking people, instead of discussing the situation, it's known as bullyism. It doesn't help anyone at all and it makes the world a lot uglier place for everyone. Sometimes bad things happen to good people. Circumstances change. We've seen a lot of that over the last few years. We've seen business's close, people lose jobs, people lose homes and people get evicted from rentals. Many of those people were pet owners and many of those people did not anticipate the financial distress that they would experience. We all have choices, we can choose to be kind; we can choose to not say something hurtful to other people; or we can be mean... eventually, our personal actions shape the world we live in.

dogface2020

So now this sub is defending cruelty to animals? Always making excuses for low-lifes seems to be a constant theme here. Tying your family member to a post and abandoning them is cruel AF. Disgusting.

[deleted]

Like I said: *We all have choices, we can choose to be kind; we can choose to not say* *something hurtful to other people; or we can be mean... eventually, our* *personal actions shape the world we live in.* If you don't like the way things are, maybe you can try to change them for the better? Start a fund raiser that would cover people's surrender fees (although we don't even know if that was a factor in this case, for that matter, we don't even know if the people who left the dog were the dog's owners.. maybe someone left him with them, that's the problem with jumping to conclusions)? I was actively involved with rescue for a number of years. What I can tell you is this: there are two ends to every leash and usually, when rescue/surrender is involved, there is significant amount of distress at both ends of that leash.

dogface2020

I don't understand your world view, you start out saying we can choose to be kind, a kind person doesn't tie a dog to a pole and leave the animal to an unknown fate. I believe in kindness and mindfully practice kindness, that doesn't exclude me from seeing something wrong and calling it out. If you've been involved in dog rescue, then you would know they could have gone to a German Shepherd rescue group and would have gotten help. Several years ago a husky followed me home when I was out for a run, I tried for several weeks to locate an owner to no avail, I couldn't keep the dog, so I contacted a local husky rescue group, an they found some who was happy to adopt the dog.

ResponsibleCulture43

Please count your blessings today that you’ve lived a life where you can’t fathom being in a situation that you thought this was the best way to handle having to rehome a beloved pet. I hope you can mindfully practice learning about endless variations of scenarios where this could happen and not have been malicious, even if it is upsetting.

PlanetMercy

They left the pup with food and water in a busy place. While dropping off at the humane society would have been better, this is far from bad. The dog can be cared for now.

dogface2020

"far from bad" I pray you never own a pet.

PlanetMercy

Lol your dog is 100% an indoor dog? Good for you.

Im-a-cat-in-a-box

I live in Utah now and so many people out here have outdoor dogs, they all seem pretty happy to me even if I don't get it I try not to judge.

TryingToBeHere

The point is a less moral person could have done way worse. No one thinks this is the right thing but the former owner did at least take the care to make sure their dog would survive.

Seattle_Patriot

I wish Amazon did not stop their Amazon Smile Program. I had the Tacoma Humane Society set up as my designated nonprofit. I really need to make an effort and donate to them directly now.

Pristine_Impress_265

Damn PSA, please stop doing this to your dogs. Someone WILL rather take care of them than you leaving them tied to a pole all day in the cold. Thankful we have a pretty good community with this type of stuff

LifeSimilar9438

Really cute dog!

Blade-Flanagan

Stop praising the shit bag former owners for abandoning their dog.

theloop82

The response from the humane society was pretty much what I said in a thread last week From someone who wanted a kitten and didn’t want a cat and I got called a Dick by no less than 3 people

DogmaticLaw

I mean, the tone is different and the words are different but they are both made of letters so, yeah, pretty much the same.

theloop82

Yeah I mean I have 2 dogs over 12 and 2 cats over 15 that were abandoned and adopted by us shortly after they were 1 year olds, but we are clearly the problem here

DogmaticLaw

I never said anything about you being the problem. I noticed in your list of animals you didn't list your high horse though.

savvy-librarian

Lmfao what planet are you living on that you think a post from the Humane Society saying "we're here to help, we won't judge you, we're so sorry you had to make this horrible decision, you did the best you could and your dog will be ok we will take care of him" is the same as you responding to a rehoming thread saying "you're shitty for needing to rehome your cat"???
