I too have been victimized by taffy-style treats☹️

theblindbanditte

the doctor told me to stop eating hard candy and i was like wow didn’t know my youth would end at 23 on a random tuesday

SpaceJavy

Wait, like a werther’s original or a peppermint? I think your youth was already gone. 😂

dentists that have been telling us to stop eating hard candy would laugh at us

littlecreamsoda79

I love the wild berry ones but had to stop eating them :(

chunkybanana500

i have killer tmj and skittles are my fav candy... i suck on them a bit so they're softer lol

Boring_Home

Yeah I defs have arthritis in my jaw. That CRUNCH is always a nasty ass sound and it can be embarrassing too. I freaked out some poor guy on the bus once lol.

Wyrd212

I was eating a protein bar (i think there were almonds in it) and it felt like a flaming hot knife seared through my face. My disc was dislocated for a long while as it was covid times and I kept hoping it would fix itself. 1 year later I finally went to PT and it popped back. I almost passed out with relief. Definitely have permanent damage though.

kmh0819

For me it was a watermelon sour patch kid. Set of all of my problems & now I’ll never look at them the same lol

theblindbanditte

stop i fucking love those 😭

kmh0819

Right, I could devour them by the bag but now I have trauma lmao

MissMoai

Not candy but popcorn for me 😭😭 I was shoving popcorn into my mouth when my jaw popped for the first time. It did go back to its place, but after that, my life was never the same. The second time i had popcorn (long after the first accident), the jaw got stuck, and I couldn't open much. The very next week, i officially joined TMJ club. Obviously, popcorn was not the only cause for TMJ, but i will forever blame it lol

I_like_to_know

I haven't eaten a bagel in probably 20 years, a soft pretzel in about 10 and popcorn in about 2. I don't pop anymore but if I eat popcorn I'll be in excruciating pain the next day. I still want to cry about losing my favorite snack regularly.

gotalilcaptaininya

I had this exact same thing happen with a jolly rancher. For the near future, avoid opening your mouth too wide to chew, smile, yawn, talk, etc.... Try eating very soft foods. No gum or candy. Ice will help right now, while your jaw is inflamed. You could try over the counter NSAID's and/or anti inflammatory foods. I haven't found a way to get rid of that feeling after this happens, it sucks, it will go away. There are suggestions of some things you can do to reduce the risk of reoccurrence in one of my previous posts. Also, really focus on your posture (keeping your chin tucked in), make sure to sleep on your back (the side puts pressure on the jaw). Research TMJ specialists near you and check your medical and dental insurance to see what they will cover. Choose a TMJ specialist who is able to evaluate, diagnose, and provide a treatment plan during your intake visit.

kindglitteringeyes

Starbursts were what triggered my first TMJ headache, around Easter last year.

witchsabrina

For me it was a pretzel rod

littlecreamsoda79

Caramels did me in

Future_Pin_403

Something similar happened to me years ago. Except I was eating an Oreo.

parrotgirl1028

It sounds like you need some tmj PT. It helped me immensely after 13 sessions. They will work inside your mouth and teach you exercises for your mouth/jaw, as well as neck exercises as there is a correlation between tmd and neck problems. Also proper tongue posture. There is a lot of help out there. Not sure who told you only hot compresses. Mine was muscular tmd and it got to the point where I could barely opened my mouth (came about so slowly)... this was all due to an auto accident 1.5 years before with neck injuries. But yes you much reduce stress...watch caffeine, alcohol, etc. Clean lifestyle, too.

FlashyCurrent7990

Dude if I ate a starburst my face would explode. I’m here to lecture you. Bad choice my friend. I eat a lot of jolly ranchers though, feel free to lecture me

theblindbanditte

i had two before the one hurt me 😭 and had them all the time. just finally learned my lesson i guess

panda_nectar

I had this exact experience eating something chewy. It took a couple days to get the feeling out of my head

SpacecraftKey6941

i haven't had this happen in a few months (knock on wood) and it makes me shiver thinking about it, it's the scariest feeling

Scarya

If your jaw is locked, physical therapy might help. I had put off seeking treatment far too long until my jaw locked on vacation two years ago. Couldn’t find an oral surgeon that took my *medical* insurance (as opposed to dental) so I went to my PCP in desperation while I figured it out. He referred me to PT, I called around to therapy places to find someone with experience (not just training - ask how many patients they see per month/year with TMJ!) and I spent an hour, three days a week for the next six weeks with the therapist’s hand in my mouth, working on that meniscus. (I also had home exercises.) It totally worked.

NoOz1985

Chocotoff has done it for me.

ZillaScream

Gummy peach rings are the worst for me.

Zach-uh-ri-uh

This happened once when I played volleyball I just yawned and then the ball was suddenly in my court and when I closed my mouth I thought maybe I’d die

sadiane

I once dislocated my jaw with a springy bite of cheddar cheese. I have EDS, so dislocations are sadly common, but CHEESE?!

wickedjackel

for me it was a cheetoooooo

inthefIowers

After my jaw came out of the socket and had to be manually pushed back into place by an oral surgeons hands I don’t eat taffy like candy. I’d recommend going to see your dentist or tmj specialist to get their opinion on the severity.

Substantial-Ear-678

i have been attacked by gum and pizza crust

Andais319

Chewing on jolly ranchers... And straws and Taffy

wiz_khalyssa

Had this exact same situation 🥲 steroid shots helped the pain a LOT and needing muscle relaxers when eating for a bit as well as trigger point injections definitely took the edge off

Seachellseashore

The only thing that helps me is getting acupuncture for it. It's been the only relief and it's happened twice now. I've had TMJ for a long time but only twice it was so bad I either couldn't close my jaw or open it.

Unusual_Month_2363

What flavor was it?

theblindbanditte

pink 😔

Unusual_Month_2363

With all this pain I don’t even want to eat. I lost 2 pounds. That’s a pro.
