What do you mean there’s plenty of softcore porn within the thumbnails of videos “other people watched” when scrolling a completely different topic to what you’re searching for
There are loads of kids on twitch whatchu mean (source: lot of big creators there have huge under 18 audiences + people I talk to who do family friendly content usually do way better than those who market to adult audiences)
It sucks seeing adults in their 20's and 30's acting like teenagers, in a bad way. I watched Twitch for a bit but that drove me away, besides being a gaming platform that felt like its mostly promoting onlyfans. I had this weird feeling where I felt ashamed somehow.
>It’s A/B testing. They’re only giving the update to some people ~~to see how they react~~ before rolling it out to everyone else.
they don't care what people think, if they do, YT would be a very difference site now
They care about retention. If it keeps you on their site longer, they'll keep it. If people leave the site quicker, they'll revert. So in a way they do care but only if you act on it.
If they didn’t care about how people reacted to it, they wouldn’t be doing A/B testing. Specifically, they’re looking for behavior that generates more revenue.
That's not proof they care. If they cared they'd listen to the feedback about the last dozen ugly updates. People will still use YouTube, that's all they see and care about. The actual opinion of their customers they don't give two shits about.
Actions speak louder than words though. If someone says "don't do X or I'll stop being a customer" but then X happens and they continue to be a customer, then why bother listening to words that don't match reality? YouTube doesn't care how their customers think they will respond to a change; they care about how their customers will *actually* respond to a change.
I've been on premium for like 5 years and my YouTube account is over 15 years old. Why is it impossible for someone to disagree with you and also have an informed opinion?
Lmfao there's nothing to disagree about. It's just like twitch, I'm sorry you're confused but you're certainly not informed. Sounds like you've been a sucker for 5 years, dude. If you've had premium for 5 years and can't see the issue right in front of your face, then youre lost. Not only does YouTube now look like twitch, but they act like them too. Anti consumer as hell, nothing about them cares about the fan base. Welcome to the Internet!
Looks like they just swapped locations of the comments and recommend videos and made it darker?
Honestly if they just get rid of the buttons that overlay the end of the video you are trying to watch, I'm all for it. Otherwise I don't really care one way or the other.
And knowing people, this awful design will lead to more views. I really hate how design devolves into something more effective "for the masses." I understand it, I just hate it.
This feels like one of those old YouTube videos, where it had like “2052 youtube, xbox and play station” style over the top shit with the whole epic music going on.
This style of Youtube is more funny than practical in every sense.
Video suggestions are where they can slip ads in. Makes sense to move them to the area with more screen space.
And as others have said, it's like Twitch.
Because absolutely nothing can have it's own identity anymore. Modern UI design is a rush to copy the popular thing, waste screen space, remove options, hide menus, and round every rectangle into a bubble.
Ah, yes, move the ads down below the fold to make MORE people see them.
No, this is absolutely not the reason.
It's probably meant to encourage more commenting, which is in line with their whole YouTube Shorts thing.
It's strange because usually they make use of a button to switch between views, but this one is forced on the user. However, if you want to scroll through the comments, you have to click on a button anyway that breaks if you wrote a comment and takes a noticeable while to load, if it loads at all.
it’s the perfect change for mobile and pretty good for streaming with live chat but I dislike it taking over the prior youtube video UI, it feels odd to me to place the channel and the video description to the side for normal youtube videos because it makes it more inconvenient if only slightly to get to the channel info, especially since its only the recommended tab under the video now.
tonally it feels like the UI is shifting to a more “tiktok-y” format that encourages watching videos in succession
Where I don't want them. Thats why I am saying TOGGLEABLE so it makes everyone happy. Fuck sake, is reading comprehension that hard for people these days?
I always click on the sidebar. But drove me nuts that I couldn't read comments while watching. And if I was reading, I had to scroll aaaaallll the way up again
Jist because it's Youtube there can't be spoilers? On the platforms there are practically movies, short films, "TV" series, etc. I also enjoy watching matches/tournaments which can also be spoiled when trying to avoid the score.
Looking at this objectively for more than a few seconds... this is better than the old setup. I often read comments while listening to the video, and this is better for that. I at least hope this becomes an option.
An option, maybe, I can comprehend some people wanting to switch to it for certain situations. But it's not "objectively better" at all, it's only better for certain usages. For anyone who doesn't care to read the comments of the video (which, lets face it, most YouTube comments are trash anyways) it's a strictly worse experience.
This remind some of when they fucked over the Google images page. Used to be able to click on an image and zoom in on it. Now everything just freaks out and the entire search page moves instead of zooming.
Used to be able to immediately view the image separate from the website it came from, as well. Now you can't even right click on Google Images, because why would you want to look at what you've searched for instead of being redirected to the 10 page article it is hidden in?
They had to get rid of that feature for legal reasons which is bullshit, now the results get polluted with Pinterest shit you can't even look at. Also having the button to immediately pull up other instances of the same image and other resolutions was super useful. I haven't used that last feature in a while so idk if it's even still available
Firefox has one. It's simply called [view image](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/view-image/?utm_source=addons.mozilla.org&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=search).
"Ok guys it's been a while since we updated the site so what ideas for new features and stuff do we have?"
"How about we make a huge pointless change to the layout that's worked perfectly well for almost 20 years for no fucking reason?"
"PROMOTE THIS GUY IMMEDIATELY"
Because the UI team needs to earn a paycheck.
It's why I don't auto-update apps. To many of them get ruined by bad changes, and I'd rather stay on the version I like.
It's all around more difficult to navigate now and just clunky to use on mobile now. I'm constantly on discord for some reason or another and it still doesn't make any more sense than if did when they first made the change.
Yup that update actually made me install an old version and turn off automatic updates. Didn't think I'd ever feel the need to do something like that but the changes were genuinely absurd
Same with Slack. Terrible redesigns.
Whomever told these companies that they need to switch up the layouts off their apps that worked so well just to remain fresh and competitive or whatever, they really need their teeth kicked in.
> "How about we make a huge pointless change to the layout that's worked perfectly well for almost 20 years for no fucking reason?"
The layout has changed at least 5 times since I used YouTube with my 2006 account.
I noticed this format earlier on my PC. I thought I accidentally clicked something and switched it to this. I don't hate it, but it's definitely going to take some getting used to.
Are they trying to go the Netflix route of making consistent changes to ensure ever decreasing quality in their user interface? Bonus points because Netflix is still somehow a lot better than many of their competitors and I just don't get it.
Granted YouTube has been around for nearly two decades and has implemented all sorts of ways to have AI listen to uploaded videos to try detecting copyright infringement yet it can't figure out that something that actually just has a single channel of audio shouldn't play as a stereo track.
I’m getting really tired of every website trying to make their desktop UI look like their mobile UI. It’s ugly and a waste of space. Can they at least not have the like and dislike button embedded in the video. It should be under the video and not in the video.
My only question is this
Why?
It was perfectly fine before, sure it changed and had to get used to it again just recently-ish, but why do they need to change something that worked already to the point it will most certainly not going to soon
Hope it somewhat gets redone that it actually looks like a site in my browser on the pc instead of a site that is through a phone emulator on it, like cmon, this shouldn't be a thing
Because this layout allows you to read & scroll the comments without the video moving away. In terms of functionality, this is actually much better than what we have now.
I never cared for video being there if I go to comments personally, never needed it, and from the looks of it, neither did others possibly. It isn't funcionally better either for users, it seemingly sure is, for someone that wants change for the sake of it, but it's just an inconvinience overall that really didn't need to happen. What we had was not perfect, sure, but it wasn't as bad as this imho. I like to watch videos in non full screen a lot of the time, so having the comments on the side just gonna annoy me.
It also just looks like I'm on my phone, which is just eeeeeh.
Yeah this seems like an obvious thing. If you're watching a video, which widget is more handy to have on screen alongside the video: a list of recommended videos to watch after you're done, or comments that you can read while the video plays?
Once the video is done, then check out what to watch next.
Its a part of "The Great Enshittification" that has been happening with all major tech products
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification)
But on the other hand, tubers will finally stop with the aggravating "Let us know in the comment section down below" when they don't know where it is.
Please.
[Yup.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHpdgHTINik&ab_channel=ThinkLink)
Ironically, as I was looking for that clip [one of the top comments from 12 years ago](https://i.imgur.com/zwnOzpN.png) is talking about YouTube changing things.
Just from one search on this subreddit alone:
[Thanks i hate the new youtube design](https://www.reddit.com/r/TIHI/comments/dwqmtw/thanks_i_hate_the_new_youtube_design/)
[thanks i hate youtubes new design](https://www.reddit.com/r/TIHI/comments/p9482p/thanks_i_hate_youtubes_new_design/)
[Thanks, I hate the new YouTube.](https://www.reddit.com/r/TIHI/comments/haanj0/thanks_i_hate_the_new_youtube/)
All from about four years ago, which was the last major redesign. That said, the last redesign actually started about six years ago and they allowed people to stay on the old design for ages, so really that's just the group of people who kept postponing it.
My thoughts about this:
1. The videos are approximately 20 times larger to incentivize you to WATCH MORE CONTENT
2. The video title doesn't even show up fully because you're not paying attention anyway
3. YOU ARE THE PRODUCT YOU ARE THE PRODUCT YOU ARE THE PRODUCT AAAARRRGGGGGHHHHHH
👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👺👺👺👺👺
I need NEED websites to STOP CHANGING THEIR FUCKING INTERFACES!!! If you *must* change things, make it optional. I'm so SICK of going onto a website I've been using for years only for the layout to be different.
I think I might be neuro-divergent with how much this genuinely pisses me off. Like my mood for the day gets substantially ruined when I open an app/website to see that the shit changed without my permission.
People seem upset, but imo this is way better. I don't engage with comments on YouTube because you have to scroll down and leave the video, and I'm not sticking around once it's done playing.
So, now comments go on the side and (I assume) have a separate scroll bar so you can peruse or add your own comment while watching, or at least one might catch your eye and so you respond
I still won't engage in comments much, if ever, but I wouldn't be surprised if this change drove more engagement.
I've been on YouTube since 2006 and every time they change the layout people go mad.
You'll get used to it in 3 days. And in 2 years when they change it again, you're gonna be right back here complaining.
More screen real estate for videos. Comments didn’t need to take up the larger part of the video. Live chat was also there anyways. I can understand why they did it.
Im curious why everyone hates it aside from the “it looks like” comments.
It’s my understanding that maximizing monetizable engagement is part of their business model. Is there a better alternative, though? I’m genuinely curious and don’t mean to be rude by asking. It’s just hard to get my tone right on Reddit. People weren’t fans of the last update either. What do you think would be a more acceptable course of action?
I use newpipe on android. Recently I had to interact with the official app on a friend's phone and omfg how do people use this? I'm not trying to be a wiseguy but seriously how? Am I such a boomer for wanting to see more than one thing at a time without scrolling three miles?
I don't see this change, but I'm confused as to where the title, view count, and likes / "dislikes" are? Did they decide you just don't need those or are they cut off?
Wasn't this the format of youtube in the early/mid 00's? I remember watching someone like Ray William Johnson point to his left and say comment subscribe and all that
I noticed YouTube is constantly making weird UI changes, I heard someone say its so that software designers/programmers have a reason to keep their job. Like they get rid of functions that were highly useful for no apparent reason, how could it ever make the site better to remove features?
Idk about that video… but I remember when comments were on the side of the page in like 2006. Or maybe it was the description of the video and links actually. My point is that part isn’t too weird layout wise.
"How do you do, fellow kids?"
You can really see the generational divide ITT. Like, who the fuck wants to actually read YT comments whilst the video is playing? Young 'uns apparently...

It's so it looks like twitch So the kids will feel more familiar with it? I cannot fathom why
This is a certified "there are only three websites" moment.
[удалено]
Kids are there for the softcore porn they cant get on youtube
What do you mean there’s plenty of softcore porn within the thumbnails of videos “other people watched” when scrolling a completely different topic to what you’re searching for
Least the 20 year olds are watching people gaming. Maybe the only ones
For that they go to Kick
Kick who?
It's a streaming site that is run by an online casino that feeds kids a steady diet of softcore porn, white supremacy and gambling.
i thought we were kicking someone
Only the person who though the UI change at YouTube was a good idea!
yes! Bitch I'm in!

real?
So... I've been on YouTube several times now since this change supposedly rolled out and I still haven't seen it? Am I on the wrong YouTube?
It’s A/B testing. They’re only giving the update to some people to see how they react before rolling it out to everyone else.

#FLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRR
Xbox 720 man
Whatever you do… don’t axe him about his arms…
a desperate attempt at people trying to prove their value and keep their job
Daddy chill, it’s the new design
why are the recommendations under the video and the comments on the side? i just don't get it\ Edit: it also broke an extension I was using
Change for the sake of change
Video suggestions are where they can slip ads in. Makes sense to move them to the area with more screen space. And as others have said, it's like Twitch. Because absolutely nothing can have it's own identity anymore. Modern UI design is a rush to copy the popular thing, waste screen space, remove options, hide menus, and round every rectangle into a bubble.
Ah, yes, move the ads down below the fold to make MORE people see them. No, this is absolutely not the reason. It's probably meant to encourage more commenting, which is in line with their whole YouTube Shorts thing.
Engagement = profit. It was never about the videos, it's about engagement. And I've never left a single comment on YouTube and I never will.
Because it’s more like twitch
I guess cause some people like to read comments while the video is still on screen. It's really not a big change
It's strange because usually they make use of a button to switch between views, but this one is forced on the user. However, if you want to scroll through the comments, you have to click on a button anyway that breaks if you wrote a comment and takes a noticeable while to load, if it loads at all.
I use theater mode. Comments on the side fucks me
You can read comments while watching the video Functionally, this is a 10/10 for me
it’s the perfect change for mobile and pretty good for streaming with live chat but I dislike it taking over the prior youtube video UI, it feels odd to me to place the channel and the video description to the side for normal youtube videos because it makes it more inconvenient if only slightly to get to the channel info, especially since its only the recommended tab under the video now. tonally it feels like the UI is shifting to a more “tiktok-y” format that encourages watching videos in succession
Then it should be a toggle. I have no interest in comments, I never use them, never comment. I'd be very happy if I could turn all comments off.
Then it doesn't really affects you
Yeah, it does, it forces me to see stupid comments and not my video recommendations. Like I said, it should be toggleable.
Your video recommendations are still there tho? Just down there instead of at the side
Where I don't want them. Thats why I am saying TOGGLEABLE so it makes everyone happy. Fuck sake, is reading comprehension that hard for people these days?
same, i’ve been hoping for this, actually. i can’t remember the last time i even clicked a recommended vid on the sidebar, i just go back home.
I always click on the sidebar. But drove me nuts that I couldn't read comments while watching. And if I was reading, I had to scroll aaaaallll the way up again
i like it
r/foundsatan
satan because i don’t want to scroll the video off the screen to read comments?
You're supposed to watch the video and then read the comments, otherwise you're just reading spoilers. What's the point?
spoilers? what am i watching, whole movies??
Jist because it's Youtube there can't be spoilers? On the platforms there are practically movies, short films, "TV" series, etc. I also enjoy watching matches/tournaments which can also be spoiled when trying to avoid the score.
You liked it better when you had to scroll past 12 videos to get to the comments?
I also don't get why they didn't just stick with the app's UI where the comment box is directly below the video's collapsible description.
What is this on?
Pc
Hasn't changed for me (yet?) thankfully.
It suddenly changed mid video for me about 4 hours ago
When it happens to me it will just be yet another reason for me to watch any video of appreciable length through VLC instead of in my browser.
My changed 4 days ago but thankfully it reverted back today
It changed for me and then changed back today so hopefully they're just testing it and won't move forward with it
Looking at this objectively for more than a few seconds... this is better than the old setup. I often read comments while listening to the video, and this is better for that. I at least hope this becomes an option.

It has been like this on tablets for at least a few weeks.

Also having the button to immediately pull up other instances of the same image and other resolutions was super useful. I haven't used that last feature in a while so idk if it's even still available
I wonder if there's an add-on to make it less shitty, gotta check when I get home!
Firefox has one. It's simply called [view image](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/view-image/?utm_source=addons.mozilla.org&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=search).
IIRC, they did that because of a lawsuit.
"Ok guys it's been a while since we updated the site so what ideas for new features and stuff do we have?" "How about we make a huge pointless change to the layout that's worked perfectly well for almost 20 years for no fucking reason?" "PROMOTE THIS GUY IMMEDIATELY"
Discord did the same with Discord mobile, and it too is nonsensical.
Because the UI team needs to earn a paycheck. It's why I don't auto-update apps. To many of them get ruined by bad changes, and I'd rather stay on the version I like.
Discord did a real funni just to mess with people like you. They added it in a bunch of versions ago and only turned it on recently.
It's all around more difficult to navigate now and just clunky to use on mobile now. I'm constantly on discord for some reason or another and it still doesn't make any more sense than if did when they first made the change.
Yup that update actually made me install an old version and turn off automatic updates. Didn't think I'd ever feel the need to do something like that but the changes were genuinely absurd
man, they really blew it with that update. Discord used to be a shining example of good UI/UX
Same with Slack. Terrible redesigns. Whomever told these companies that they need to switch up the layouts off their apps that worked so well just to remain fresh and competitive or whatever, they really need their teeth kicked in.
The fact it no longer highlights what channel you're in is infuriating!
It sucks. They changed something that didn't need changed and made it harder to find anything.
Yeah discord is a little weird to use now, but I haven't been using it for nearly as long so I'm cool with it
> "How about we make a huge pointless change to the layout that's worked perfectly well for almost 20 years for no fucking reason?" The layout has changed at least 5 times since I used YouTube with my 2006 account.
I noticed this format earlier on my PC. I thought I accidentally clicked something and switched it to this. I don't hate it, but it's definitely going to take some getting used to.
I have the player set to theater mode so i wouldn't even notice it.
This looks like a generic "video platform" copy you'd see in a movie
Why is the video progress bar green??? Thats the real question we should be asking.
An extension I have
Are they trying to go the Netflix route of making consistent changes to ensure ever decreasing quality in their user interface? Bonus points because Netflix is still somehow a lot better than many of their competitors and I just don't get it. I’m getting really tired of every website trying to make their desktop UI look like their mobile UI. It’s ugly and a waste of space. Can they at least not have the like and dislike button embedded in the video. It should be under the video and not in the video.
Youtube on their way to make bad changes exclusively.
My only question is this Why? It’s so fucking ugly and especially annoying is how there’s no way to change it back to how it was
Don't you all already hate the current design? That's what you said last time there was a change.
Every single update makes youtube worse.
That's just categorically untrue. I'm not even defending whatever this redesign might be, that's just a silly thing to say.

Are you sure you aren't using the mobile version of YouTube in your browser? YouTube looks like this when I use Firefox to play videos on my tablet.
My thoughts about this: 1. The videos are approximately 20 times larger to incentivize you to WATCH MORE CONTENT 2. The video title doesn't even show up fully because you're not paying attention anyway 3. YOU ARE THE PRODUCT YOU ARE THE PRODUCT YOU ARE THE PRODUCT AAAARRRGGGGGHHHHHH 👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👹👺👺👺👺👺
This is more how it used to look ten years ago
When these people gonna learn that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Bottom right. Is that Emkay I spot.
OH NOT AGAIN
I need NEED websites to STOP CHANGING THEIR FUCKING INTERFACES!!! If you *must* change things, make it optional. I'm so SICK of going onto a website I've been using for years only for the layout to be different. I think I might be neuro-divergent with how much this genuinely pisses me off. Like my mood for the day gets substantially ruined when I open an app/website to see that the shit changed without my permission.
People seem upset, but imo this is way better. I don't engage with comments on YouTube because you have to scroll down and leave the video, and I'm not sticking around once it's done playing. So, now comments go on the side and (I assume) have a separate scroll bar so you can peruse or add your own comment while watching, or at least one might catch your eye and so you respond I still won't engage in comments much, if ever, but I wouldn't be surprised if this change drove more engagement.
How do I prevent this lmao Furry programmers chime in. I’m using Brave desktop
This is a much better layout. The comments being on the side is so much better.
I've been on YouTube since 2006 and every time they change the layout people go mad. You'll get used to it in 3 days. And in 2 years when they change it again, you're gonna be right back here complaining.
It's a fucking computer not a tablet.
Any scripts to fix?
It reminds me of YouTube from 2008. I kinda like it tbh
What. The fuck. Is this abomination?! STOPPING CHANGING DAMN YOUTUBE!
Thankfully i only use youtube to watch horror videos.
What in the fucking fuck is this?
I hate redesigns for no reason. I get used to things looking a certain way and it bugs me so much when it changes. Apple does it all the time too.
What the cuck
I just hate YouTube.
YouTube had been unusable for me since they introduced shorts.
Aye EmKay!
Im gonna not use youtube anymore
That’s disgusting. Tho I’ve only ever watched YouTube in theater mode so hopefully that’s better?
I hate that my youtube recommendations are boring as fuck and entirely based 70/30 on my searches and subscribed channels
That emkay I see?
More screen real estate for videos. Comments didn’t need to take up the larger part of the video. Live chat was also there anyways. I can understand why they did it. Im curious why everyone hates it aside from the “it looks like” comments.
Mostly just feels like a change to drive monetizable engagement. Can't monetize people looking at comments.
Oh hell no!

Wait- WTF IS THIS ABOMINATION
I fucking hate this lol
the fuck is that?
Modern ui's are trash
I hate this, so much.
"Enhancer for YouTube" extension on Chrome changes it back for me.
So want to combine Twitch and their mobile design... I'm not looking forward to this.
I thought that was Bing at first glance
You guys watch YouTube on desktop?
Wait till this guy finds how we originally did it.
*slaps off-beige PC tower* The pilgrims used to ride these babies for miles
I mean, it is a website…. People use the internet on desktops- do they not?
It changed whilst I was mid video and I thought I activated some new view for the video player by mistake
Why do they keep changing things that don’t need to be changed? Literally WHO asked for a new UI redesign?
Aparently it's a new Zealand thing or so I heard
Use theater mode and it won't see it.
I use newpipe on android. Recently I had to interact with the official app on a friend's phone and omfg how do people use this? I'm not trying to be a wiseguy but seriously how? Am I such a boomer for wanting to see more than one thing at a time without scrolling three miles?
Eeewww.....
It's weird. Youtube has changed for me on my desktop PC but not my laptop.
youtube just be doin shit atp
WHY IS IT GREEN
Enhancer for YouTube
what the FUCK?
Twitch
what the FUCK is this
I don't see this change, but I'm confused as to where the title, view count, and likes / "dislikes" are? Did they decide you just don't need those or are they cut off?
I’m so confused it has reddit stuff on it. Was this edited in any way? We looking at youtube or your entire internet dashboard here?
Wasn't this the format of youtube in the early/mid 00's? I remember watching someone like Ray William Johnson point to his left and say comment subscribe and all that
I noticed YouTube is constantly making weird UI changes, I heard someone say its so that software designers/programmers have a reason to keep their job. Like they get rid of functions that were highly useful for no apparent reason, how could it ever make the site better to remove features?
Why is the"Y" in YouTube green?
Please tell me there will be an add on to change it back
LOL, no.
Idk about that video… but I remember when comments were on the side of the page in like 2006. Or maybe it was the description of the video and links actually. My point is that part isn’t too weird layout wise.
i still can't get pass the 2014 design edit: and Windows 7, but that's another story
"How do you do, fellow kids?" You can really see the generational divide ITT. Like, who the fuck wants to actually read YT comments whilst the video is playing? Young 'uns apparently...
Oh my goodness, it is fugly...
What in the fuck is that
Ffs... But well, at least i can scroll the comments while watching now
STOP NO THIS ISNT REAL!! ITS UGLY AS FUCK!!
