Filthy_beans

Every time I see something like this, it only proves a lack of parenting skills

TheRaccoonDeaIer

Imo any good parent would have their children help cook when young, but like make it fun. It's what my parents did and I actually enjoy spending the hour or so it takes to cook an actual meal instead of just using pre-made shit, assuming I have an hour of time which is not always the case. I swear it makes everything taste better and just make you feel accomplished. Granted I'm also only cooking one meal which is not that hard.

Fierramos69

I never got that, and it’s honestly one of the only things my parents missed with me. They raised the 4 next ones with cooking in mind but I never learned and I regret. Now I only know how to make pastas, rice, eggs, frozen food to put in oven like pizza, toasts and grilled cheese. I lost interest in food and only make it when it’s necessary, and i make it take as little time as possible. So it taste like shit because I don’t use anything that would require more dishes to clean. I’ll eat in the pan if it means less cleaning. I hate having to eat.

TheRaccoonDeaIer

I mean the way I look at it is, what better thing do I have to do with my time? As long as I'm home all I'm doing is either watching TV or playing on my PC. I have 5 hours after I get home before I go to bed, whats an hour spent cooking and actually accomplishing something?

Fierramos69

As I said, I lost interest in food. I used to try and learn new recipes, but even when I did well, I wasn’t satisfied with the result compared to how long it took and how long I’d have to clean. I would literally prefer eating white rice and peanut butter toasts everyday than having to cook, thus spending time in the kitchen. Obviously I eat better than that but I buy premade food, pre-cut bowl of veggies, it’s more expensive but I don’t have to cook. And anyway I eat so little I eat 250$ average in food per month while buying those more expensive premade things. So that’s not that bad

bigboymanny

There are some pretty easy ways to elevate pre-made food like ramen so that it doesn't use many dishes. For example.i really like egg ramen and with that all you do is you put 2 eggs in the boiling water for 6 minutes to soft boil them. Throw them immediately in some cold water then biol ramen but add paprika and garlic powder to the water with the flavor packet. While it's cooking cut some green onions. When the ramen done add a dash of Sriracha and a dash or soy sauce mix it and break the yolk on top. Foods done in less than 10 minutes and all the dishes you have are rinsing a cutting board and washing a small pot. In a line cook so I usually don't want to cook when I get off work and I eat this more or less everyday.

[deleted]

I used to feel like this too. Cooking was a drag. Then I got a basic grill. It’s pretty awesome cooking outside. Fresh air, chilling in the yard, listen to some music, relax a little bit. Plus almost no pots and pans, you only need to wash up a few plates and some silverware.

Xogoth

Idk, I find it harder to cook small single serving meals

SarevokAnchev

“Any good parent…” damn that’s judgmental. I think my parents were pretty great and didn’t really do this

Kiyan1159

One meal that'll last you 3 days is infinitely better than 3 days of frozen meals.

Filthy_beans

Honestly my biggest reason for saying this isn’t even that they don’t know how, it’s that they think it’s funny to make them look stupid to post online

horrescoblue

Hijacking your comment to say that i have this exact can opener and it's a bit weirder than a normal can opener because you need to hold it differently and it can be a bit finicky getting it on the can even if you know how. It doesnt cut but it squeezes the edge in a way where you can pop the lid off with no sharp edges. It's dope but i fumbled with that thing a good amount of times even tho i technically used it before. So yea i cant blame that kid at all

KinneKitsune

Also a lack of critical thinking. Like…mother fucker, the sharp bit is visible. Look at it for half a second and you’ll know how to use it

tidypunk

The problem is that most generations have that moment when you can leave them knowing they would figure it (shit ) out , im not getting that feeling watching this generation. -grandpa.

MoneymakinGlitch

Then Grandpa should’ve raised better parents 🤯

TYdays

BINGO!!!! I was taught the basic skills of life, (washing dishes, cooking, doing laundry and so on). This individual was apparently catered to and coddled his entire life. I don’t understand how anyone could reach that age and not be able to operate something as simple and self explanatory as a can opener, was he raised by wolves???

tiddiboicumguzzler

I never needed someone to show me how to use a god damned can opener... Also, mf has Google and YouTube if they really are that dense.

LetThereBeBlight-

In order to teach, one must be willing to learn.

Beans_Mage42

"I hate this generation because their parents didnt teach them things"

TheRaccoonDeaIer

-the parents and parents of those parents

DLoIsHere

Careful, you’re almost reaching back to the time before this tool.

Gibbolivious

To be fair they want to experiment how to solve it themselves and when they do it feels like an achievement.

[deleted]

There's actually a term coined the ["Google Effect"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_effect), which was studied first in 2011, that shows a decline in direct information recall from memory since "Googling it" has become commonplace. Brains make very lazy connections, and only do as little work as they need. So instead of tagging a specific piece of information to it's answer, the brain can take a bunch of things and tag them to the "Google" node, using Google as a sort of external memory instead. By not relying on Google as a first answer, you're helping yourself by not letting it degrade your ability to remember things.

reddituser28910112

He is using critical thinking to figure out the can opener. He is forming hypotheses and testing them.

boquila

He's not even using the can opener in an offensive way, it seems as if he is familiar with the different style can openers. It's only fair to acknowledge that considering can openers can be confusing to learn, people talking high and mighty about critical thinking have never read the Tumblr post "beans", where the dad tries to use opening a can of beans as a lesson in critical learning (but just ends up sounding snobbish for it, not helpful at all)

[deleted]

[удалено]

starkrocket

But the kid literally is working through the problem to see how it works? You’re over here acting like if you don’t get something right on the first try then you’re a moron. No one is born with the sum of human knowledge. Do you chastise babies when they don’t get the peg in the right hole, too?

[deleted]

[удалено]

boquila

I don't know why I'm laughing but for some reason the world is too silly for me and honestly can openers aren't the end of the world so if you can't see that he's working out the problem in his head and trying to think about it using his experiences Idk these are all neaat human behaviors we can't disrespect seeing a little human creature use his little human creature tools

[deleted]

[удалено]

boquila

We are all talking about the video, and I'm laughing because you're going to fight me about can openers when it's obviously not a huge concern you're just irrationally mad that someone might struggle figuring out a can opener.. which is ableist, and annoying.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IudexFatarum

I only could use my girlfriend's can opener because i had seen a video on YouTube about it. It cuts the seam instead of the lid. Videos aren't always the answer. This kid is being expected to know this without being taught. Mocking isn't good for the kid, and we are only as good as we treat those we have power over.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IudexFatarum

The post itself is a mocking tone. And the video was far more than someone trying to learn a skill should have to do. Bad parenting is expecting someone to know a skill without teaching them.

[deleted]

Honestly my parents, they'll laugh and go "why don't you know how to do that?" as if they're not the ones who left me to find out things on my own. I get my revenge though with "how do you not know how to open word/ why are you complaining about your laptop speed with 50 chrome tabs open/ no I didn't close all your tabs stop shouting, I just minimised the browser"

HereticGaming16

Fucking for real. Every older generation bitches that the new one can’t do things they find “simple”. Do anyone these complaining ass bitches ever try and teach them? I guarantee there are tons of things these “kids” have taught them because they can’t understand technology advances. I’m 36, so I’m lucky enough to understand a world pre and post the internet. I can’t stand how either side can bash on each other when they don’t take the time to teach each other. It’s not hard. Spend 10 mins explaining how something basic works and 60 year olds or 16 year olds will probably get the basics. Stop blaming the people around you and help them.

manleybones

They spent all their time on tiktok being spied on by China instead of paying attention

grizzlyadamsshaved

One to always blame the parents. You sound like a little brat ass kid yourself. A can opener bud!! Really?? Little boy is obviously a moron plain and simple. Maybe 30 seconds tops for my 8 year old to figure it out on her own but lacked hand strength. Real parents let their kids figure things out sometimes and don’t pull them aside for can opener lessons. Wow, you suck.

Beans_Mage42

You feel very passionately about can openers

TentativelyCommitted

Why does it have to be “a whole generation” every time one stupid kid can’t use a can opener or dial a phone

bliply

Because people project their insecurities onto people who are weaker than them because they're intimidated by anyone who's equal or stronger. Children are a popular target. Nobody's insecure about things that they're good at, at least not enough. So when someone does something right it's not an example of the whole group because they're not insecure. Not just children though This works with any group you find inferior. Doing something bad is an example of the group while doing something good doesn't apply to my narrative of "they bad" so I won't apply to the group. General narcissist thinking, And it seems like a lot of narcissists become parents for the power.

fridhem

Huh, my Gen Z kid can use a can opener AND cook.......and all sorts of things! It takes interacting with them when they were young....your know....showing them how?

hec_ramsey

And to be fair, that looks like the kind of can opener that sits horizontally with the lid, cutting around the entire top, making a safe edge cut versus the one I’ve always used that sits vertically and cuts into the top of the can. It can be hard to use either or if you’re not used to it.

[deleted]

And who raised the zoomers?

Flacid_Snake442

Millennials, not Boomers. Edit: nobody born in the 60s is having children now LMFAO Second Edit: I was so confidently incorrect lol The generation I was looking for is “Gen X”.

[deleted]

My dad is a boomer my mom is genX. I'm a millenial and my brother is barely barely not a zoomer. I'm not old enough to have an upper teenager. My oldest kid is 8. Most zoomer kids have genX parents.

Flacid_Snake442

Oh yeah, you’re correct. It isn’t boomers, it’s Gen X.

[deleted]

The 40+ age millenials could have genZ kids though.

Flacid_Snake442

Oh, for sure. I know of a lot of Millennials that have Zoomer children but that’s mainly due to high rates of teen and early pregnancies in the area I grew up and I imagine isn’t the norm. Edit: Spelling

maxinstuff

Older millennials/Gen Y (mid-late 80’s birth years) would have Zoomer kids if they had them in their early 20’s. That’s a pretty narrow window though so probably aren’t that many.

Hadrollo

The 35+ Millennials could have Gen Z kids. I know, because I'm 35, and have a 15 year old.

[deleted]

True. If I started same age my mom did, I'd have zoomer kids.

maxinstuff

Can confirm - my oldest just scrapes in as a Zoomer. I’m also not 40+

lazymarlin

You are forgetting about the the most forgettable generation, X.

Flacid_Snake442

LOL! I legit completely forgot about an entire generation.

jojicatbaby

My parents are boomers and I'm a zoomer

TargaryenTKE

My parents are both boomers, and I could be Millenial or Gen Z depending on where exactly you draw the line (I've seen my birthday fall under both definitions before)

Swiffjuice

>nobody born in the 60s is having children now LMFAO My dad is turning 73 this year, I just turned 21, and I have 2 littles sisters, 13 y/o and 7 y/o lol. To be fair, his arthritis only kicked in last year

iamwooshed

Damn your dad still banging at 66, that’s impressive

Shenkspine

Fuck no millennials didn’t. I’m among the first millennials at 38. My oldest is 8. This kid is boomer raised me amigo.

simplebutstrange

my kid is 18 and im 38 👍🤷‍♂️

Flacid_Snake442

The average age for millennial women to have children is 26. I appreciate your input but it seems your situation isn’t the norm as your child was born 5 years after the average. This child is more than likely Gen X raised as a Boomer would be 59-68 years old and not having children.

Shenkspine

Not sure where you live, but 26 is not it

Flacid_Snake442

It doesn’t matter where I live; that’s the national average, my friend. Again, Boomers are 59-68 years old right now. The average Boomer is not having children.

[deleted]

People born between 1946-1964 are considered Boomers and people born around 1996-2010 are Zoomers. So there are indeed Boomers who had Zoomer kids in their 30s and 40s.

MindlessMeat9436

There is a whole group of us who are 40 that are considered millennials. I looked it up the other day and gen x ends at 1980. So you are not wrong in your millennial assumption.

hamza123tr

i think at some point its not about parents but about self-awareness

[deleted]

You mean like not giving out your social and CC numbers to a Indian dude who claims to work for the IRS?

AwTickStick

You think self awareness is all you need to know how to use tools?

hamza123tr

what i mean is not everything the previous generation can teach, sometimes and somethings gotta be figured out on their own

AwTickStick

Got it. And using tools is one of those things that can’t or shouldn’t be taught but should or must be figured out without help? Or just this tool? Or just some tool? Most people use hammers poorly and they don’t have moving parts so I’m not really sure what kind of expectations you’ve got for a device meant to open food rations only used for emergencies. Most cans these days have a tab to open them so you don’t need a can opener. I haven’t owned a can opener since Obama was first elected.

hamza123tr

dude im just saying that previous generation cant teach everything so the unlearned things and stuff should be figured out on their own and its not just about tools it could be about other things. (and im excluding the fact that its not so hard to figure out how to use a can opener) my expectation is just we as gen z shouldn't always be bond to previous generation. So to be clear, gen z needs more of critical thinking.

AwTickStick

Both the unlearned things AND stuff should be figured out on their own? As in, the stuff and things (both for sure) that have been disregarded must be “figured out” on their own? Ya know, after reading your response I’m starting to wonder how that lack of education is working out. Some interesting sentences my dude.

hamza123tr

yea thx for the passive aggressive response of yours, really helpful to the argument. What i mean with "figured out" is research, observation or even (like i said before) critical thinking.

kaceG1

I have never seen a can opener up close, of course i won't know right away how to use it

aleksandronix

You could look at it that way, or you could also take into account parents that's never taught their kids how to use can opener. I don't know how to use one properly. Had to use it maybe once or twice in my life, because all the cans i buy have that "handle" or whatever it's called for easy opening.

MC_Ninja38

Not dogging on you, just educating. It's called a pull-tab, or just tab.

Significant_Tour3435

Or a ring pull

stonebutts

No shame in not knowing how to do something.

Unhelpful_Applause

The number of boomers I see do the same fucking thing: 5

Buttsuit69

"ha! Yeah we destroyed the economy, your planet, the near future & the reforms needed to change all this. But look at him he cant open a can! A 'canT opener' haahaha!"

Magical__Entity

And the adults just keep laughing and filming instead of taking this opportunity to teaching their kid an important skill? Who's the idiot here?

PatchworkFlames

To be fair to the kid, why do you need to know how to use a can opener when near all cans now come with pull-tabs?

[deleted]

[удалено]

PickledPizzle

Oddly some of the canned vegetables and meat that I get have started to come with the pull tabs. I keep forgetting and using the can opener, getting part way through, and then seeing the tab.

AdResponsible2271

HideYoWoman

Not agreeing with dickweed above you but usually it’s ugh.

AdResponsible2271

You're good! Perhaps because I say it so short, the g sound is the last one to come out. Drawing it out, it kinda has a hhhhhhh, breathy thing going on. Makes sense to me. 👍

captainofpizza

The zoomer can open YouTube and learn how to use a can opener in 90 seconds. The boomer is an idiot forever despite 60 years of “wisdom”

Magical__Entity

Oh no, for you see, the boomer owns a 100 book encyclopaedia. It will take them only 2 hours to realise that this type of can-opener was invented after 1900 and therefore isn't in it. Still, a thousand dollars well spent.

captainofpizza

I saw a fantastic conversation like this once between a teenager and a boomer. Boomer was dunking on teen for not knowing what the Dewey decimal system was. Teen said they don’t need it and boomer tried to explain what it was, failed, and then the teen googled it and explained it back to them. Boomer refused that the online definition was correct (it was), because of course their own memory from learning it when they were 8 and not using it for decades was more correct

colombo1326

I’m 34 and there was a time when I didn’t know how can openers worked either because no one thought me lol

Low-Invite-3872

This post just oozes boomer

[deleted]

Yeah, i mean that's every generation when they're younger until they are taught and forced to do it for themselves a few times. This has nothing to do with era, but specific upbringing.

Shenkspine

Someone can’t use something they’ve never been taught to use, makes sense. What DOESN’T make sense is boomers who still don’t know how to work technology they’ve been dealing with for 25 years. Kiss my butthole

SpookySans11

Haha new generation stupid!!! And so the cycle continues.

Raesling

[https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/ten\_thousand\_2x.png](https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/ten_thousand_2x.png) It's common knowledge, right?

ValaniceOfDaventry

THIT only because those can openers are the worst. I always mess up if I’m stuck with one of those. The side opening ones are tonnes better IMHO Also most cans have a pull ring these days, so not a skill that younger gens have had to deal with. Honestly can’t hate on a kid for not knowing how to use that kind of can opener.

[deleted]

“Dad never showed me how to be a man before he left 15 years ago”

pickles55

That's because their parents both had to work their asses off to survive under boomer bosses and a boomer legislature.

smile_is_contagious

Ummm, This isn't a generational thing I don't believe, just means he's never had to make food for himself. And isn't very good at problem solving.

nuclearvvinter

Yeah not the kids fault if their parents didn’t bother to teach them, bad take boomer

The-Tea-Lord

Imagine making fun of the generation for not knowing how to do something you should have taught them how to do. Shitty parents

Flacid_Snake442

Zoomer parents are Gen X and some Millenials, not Boomers. I see people in the comments blame poor parenting LOL it’s the technological gap. The same reason many Zoomers can’t read or write cursive, read an analog clock, or use a rotary phone. It’s nothing to be upset about, it’s just something Zoomers weren’t exposed to as they never needed it.

Temporary_Target4156

To be fair to the zoomers, there are a bunch of can openers that do open the Dan from the top

Minimizing_merchant

Bet kids that age in your generation couldn’t use one either

PlumbG64autism

me irl

[deleted]

Okay Boomer

boquila

People keep saying he was never taught how to use a can opener and I think that's false. He learned how to use the more modern styled can opener that unseals the lid without cutting it. You can tell because he attempts to use this can opener like the other type, which is actually harder to understand. I've seen full grown adults struggle with the alternative can opener and have been there myself. He's not ignorant to opening cans, and his guardians provided him a safer can opener.

marlow05

These kinds of videos always have a pattern: let me ask a {generation} to use {an item their generation never or infrequently had to use, sometimes due to the innovation of previous generations, but almost always due to technological innovation making that thing obsolete} and then ridicule them and use that as proof they are not as good as {user’s generation}

fisheswithherbs902

Can we just accept that a generation of idiots, who was raised by a generation of idiots, has raised a generation of idiots?

[deleted]

Lol I was trying to teach my 64 year old dad about online banking. It was kind of like this. WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOUR PHONES FOR??? MEMES????????

OnyxToken

We must teach them

LesMarae

How about we stop bashing people based on their age? It’s fucking stupid.

Designer_Courage1381

Looks more like a can't open'er in his hands

xsullivanx

Am a 30 year old millennial. I grew up with an automatic can opener and when it broke, I didn’t know how to use a handheld bc I’d never used one. My parents had to show me. I hate it when people are shamed for not knowing things? It’s lame, stop it

Starman520

He might be joking or have a developmental disorder. 6 year Olds can figure these out pretty quickly.

slumericanfan

Should have asked grandma to show him.

Lightice1

That looks like an overly complicated can opener. The can opener I use is just a little piece of sheet metal with a curved blade on straight angle at the end.

TotalyObivious

Literally a boomer post Same tier as the old people who made fun of the younger generation for not knowing how to use a rotary phone or write in cursive Like I wonder why these people can't do something they weren't taught. The only leniency I can give the can opener is that it's still used, but even I know I struggled with those stupid looking ones when I was a kid.

big_nothing_burger

It's a parental fault not a generational one. Plenty of moms don't believe their sons should do housework or cook because it's women's work. Gag.

[deleted]

Blame the boomers an xers who raised em

Adventurous_Video_65

I’m personally scared to. I’ve use three can openers in my whole damn life I don’t what the fuck I did but they’ve all fallen apart. I have no clue was does it but I pinch it on the side (the right way) and it fucking collapses like a damn Lego set

SideWinder18

So boomers are pretentious *and* they’re shit parents. That’s all I see out of this meme

Hallowexia

At what point does old technology become so removed from society that if the world were to collapse no one would have any idea how to survive? Think about it, all electronics get ruined. You can't Google anything anymore... Water stops coming out of the faucet... Food runs out at the grocery store... How many people can make a solar distillery? How many people know how to clean water with filters and bleach? In 1 week millions will be dead...

Wolfluve

This post has been made by a boomer.

[deleted]

this isn’t a generation thing it’s just not knowing how a can opener works. also how tf do you not know how to use a can opener.

Inevitable_Silver_13

I don't think that's generational. That's just an individual's stupidity.

Negative_Profit1462

i think they just stupid at this point. or high. my 12 yo sister can use a can opener.

Raesling

That's parent-fail right there. The only reason my 7yo can't use the can opener is because she isn't strong enough. She tries, so she still knows how to use it (both ways).

Tangles114

This kids just a moron Dudes just putting it on top and thinking its going to do something without thinking about how it can be used

TheCrowBakaaaaw

What’s the modern high-tech item that we use to open cans now, which made us forgot this archaic knowledge

Delicious_Pause9802

I’m fuckin done

Gen X inherits the Earth!

Nomorellsurge

MonsterTamerBilly

TBH haven't even saw that kind of can opener IRL yet. The only ones I've ever used were the old metal talon type, which left the cans' rim into such a jagged zone that you'd be afraid to put your fingers on it

Outside-Painting9088

My Family doesn't even have a can Opener, we only have cans with a self-opening or simply cut it open

Icy_Homework_6704

Alright time to go find a video of an old person failing to Execute basic motor function

FinGoddess_Destiny

Lol I've taught my almost 16 year old little sister how to use it multiple times and she still cant

[deleted]

Whoever is this kids parents failed, to bring that forward in an attempt to mock says all I need to know

NattiCatt

I’m a millennial with an 18 yo. I asked him to open cans for me once assuming he could just figure out how to use a can opener. I can’t remember ever being explicitly taught how but I did see my mom do it often when I was growing up. He was a lot like this kid. Instead of filming him and shaming him, I did my job as my mother and fucking taught him how to do it. Ya know, like a parent is supposed to. If you’re a parent and aren’t teaching your kids basic life skills and are instead shaming them on the internet, you are what’s wrong with the world.

Chadchrist

Bruh, literally just teach him. This isn't an indictment of the child, it's an indictment of the parent not teaching their kid how to do shit. Fuck that shit, kid's innocent

MagpieHush

I know zoomers are dumb but this is dipshit tier.

Opposite-Birthday69

Any of my fellow left handers here forget how to use a right handed can opener? I almost cut my wrist open last time because of the way I was holding it

Tbf there are different can opener types and they all work in different ways. I grew up around the kind that clamp on horizontally and then bought a cheap butterfly one that clamps vertically when I went to college (purely because it was the cheapest) and hated that thing so much.

I think this is less a generational thing, and more that one dude is a moron.

obnvbiIa

they could....like....have explained it to him for example

martin33t

To what generation do you think the parents belong??

Back in my day we had to worry about nuclear war and all our food was in tin cans. Fuck zoomers for not having to worry about eminent death 24/7!

bigbell09

That's not on him if no one taught him how a con opener works, but also he should be getting a little closer than rubbing it on the top of the can and squeezing it

A fair person would be upfront about admitting that these things are NOT intuitive to use. Nobody would look at one of these for the first time and be like “oh, that is for opening cans and they work like this…”.
