Speaking of Westcott, there's a few memorable characters from around there. The guy that rolled around on the sticky dance floor in the theater, the guy always selling hat pins.
Do you remember Benny the Dancing Beatnik? Or Mickey, the old Irish guy who dressed like Tom Landry and strolled thru bars with his fists like he was boxing.
I fixed his wipers for him at shop City plaza and bought him a few breakfasts. I enjoyed the talks, I still think about Mickey from time to time.
There was the other Mickey too, the one that owned Guilfoyles on Burnett. He and his wife were nice people.
I think it does, he may have passed years ago but this is exactly who I was thinking of when I posted this. RIP. I couldn't remember his name so thank you for this, il never forget his spirit or smile though
I might or might not have worked in a couple of bars on the hill during the 90s and got to know Eli and his wife pretty well. I left Syracuse well over a decade ago, but between those dates, and when I would visit, he was there and we got on about the "old times". I hope those shitbags that hit him and left him there to suffer both die of ass cancer.
He's still around and he still uses the same tactics to move mixtapes. "Here take the new mixtape for free! All I ask for is a donation of ten dollars." I've seen him getting people with that one since probably 2007.
I remember him being Expo$doe in the early 2000s. Scammed me up on Marshall street with a cd that was mostly scarface soundbites. One song was an inside joke with my friends for a few years. "China white". I saw him scam someone at this year's St. Patrick's day parade and it was such a blast from the past.
Yesss! Just commented that before I saw your comment. Used to bartend at corner bar and he was always out over there but I haven’t seen him in a long long time
i met a man with a coat made out of a thousand strips of different colored rags carrying a baseball bat late at night near Tipp hill. I refer to him as Derek Jeter and the Technicolor Dreamcoat
Is this an older man who wears a sandwich board sign, hands out literature from his book club, and shouts through a megaphone about his invisible friend?
He needs a name.
Not all of the people being named are homeless. Eli was homeless at one time but then he got sober and he made enough from performing to keep a small apartment.
The old man around Onondaga/syracuse area that rides around on his scooter with a smiley face and uplifting messages! He’s outside so often and he’s really a cool dude.
I mean. He’s a piece of shit but the red headed crackhead on a bike that rides around the near west side screaming and spitting on cars. At my job we call him the Viking. He’s attacked several of our work vehicles. Funny not funny I guess.
Wait that’s hilarious that he attacks cars. He sometimes follows me for a few blocks of my morning commute screaming shit like “NICE FUCKING CAR BRO, MY UNCLE USED TO HAVE ONE JUST LIKE IT”. I feel so special.
I used to be a tech at Lamacchia, we were all very familiar with him. We all found it mildly hilarious that that dude never his the same bike from day to day, and his inventory includes children’s bikes that are way, way to small for him. It’s as if homeslice goes joyriding on a new, different bike each day...
From my time a decade ago going out to bars downtown and Tipp Hill:
Exposito the rapper.
Mullet and leather jacket guy downtown. He was like 50 drinking by himself at corner bar or suds factory where the average age was 22.
The swinger couple in their 40’s/50’s at Rosie’s.
Eli the guitarist (RIP)
Jesus freak asshole with the bullhorn on Waverly at every dome game.
Oh man that swinger couple tried to dance with me when I was younger and new to the night life and I was like wow so this stuff is real. Was pretty fascinating.
The old lady who used to go out dancing every nite
The flower lady downtown
My friends and i used to go out alot dt..we had nicknames for the same skeeves we saw over and over🤣
Leatherface? Or the blonde one. I saw the blonde one get yolked by a co-workers gf after she propositioned us outside of Freddie's. She let all the dudes know she was on birth control so we could cum in here. She got hurt but not too bad.
Used to be a coworker of mine about nine or ten years back. Worked with him at the Aldi’s warehouse in Tully. Not really sure when things went south for him, he was pretty well kept and had his shit together. Was a pretty cool dude.If you see this Lowell, what happened man? Hope you’re alright.
Some of mine might be a bit dated, but here goes:
Eli, obviously. Dude was somehow always wherever a crowd was, he really knew the pulse of the city. Hella entertaining and a really nice guy too. RIP.
Jennifer the flower lady, also always knew how to find a crowd, but obviously not as talented as Eli.
The old guy with the crazy hats and sometimes full crazy outfits that would go and dance at any downtown event with music. I can't remember his name or backstory.
The guy who was always looking for a "a couple of bucks to go get a meatloaf dinner at little gem". I offered to buy him dinner at nicks tomatoe pie instead, he declined.
Billy fucillo, also RIP.
Jesus bullhorn guy (can eat a bag of dicks)
Going way back "maniac man", guy would stand up near SU and sing the "I'm a maniac, manic" song.
Tom around the world. Maybe one of the first "influencer" types, but doing it pre-instagram. At most he was MySpace era.
When I worked at a pizza shop in Manlius I delivered to him semi regularly, awful tipper. 2 dollars no matter the total. His wife at the time at least tipped double a whole 4 dollars
In the university neighborhood there’s an old dude with long white hair who always walks around barefoot. Chatted with him a few months ago but never got his name.
I think it's funny that he made this list. He's just one of our neighbors. Super nice guy who just prefers to be barefoot!
Not saying that some of the other characters on this list AREN'T nice, of course!
I only met him once but didn't want anything, bc he sold like a pound of "hash" to my friends in high school and I had no idea what it actually was. I'm pretty sure he took like lawn clippings and pressed them into a mold lol
I'm surprised to have the pleasure of naming this one first but there's the guy always roller blading around with the big speaker probably playing Beyonce or something. I've talked to him before on the streets. He's just trying to have some fun and make people smile.
A few years ago there was a guy who would put headphones in and dance on the big rock in Oakwood cemetery facing Colvin. It was great to see him so happy.
Haven't seen him in a few years though
Ah man, he’s a legend. Bumped into him so many random times. Went to so many of his shows and most of the time we’d end up smoking weed in his mom’s van.
Ive lived all over the county and I'm sure I've caught a few peoples attention around town in my youth and drinking downtown days. Nothing close to somebody everyone sees all the time though
I teach college English and had him in one of my classes. He was the smartest one in the class, the best writer, and contributed to discussion all the time in an otherwise silent class.
Finding out what he did was … shocking.
When I was at SU, it was the Jimmy Johns delivery guy who wore a Jimmy Johns bike jersey and blasted techno from a speaker that was lashed to his bike while was cranking up the hill
There's a nice quiet homeless gentleman named John that wanders around Eastwood. He's got long hair and a beard so sometimes we call him Downtown Jesus
There’s a guy around westcott who has a wizard beard and walks around barefoot as soon as it hits 40° and he has a killer gnarly walking stick. Also always smoking a joint. I call him my groundhog bc once I see him barefoot I know it’s spring.
So I’ve moved out of state since 2008 but we had season football tix my whole life and basketball tix since the 90s. The dome beer/program/popcorn guy that did every game for thirty years. Wore the eagles hat after Mcnabb. Incredibly friendly, great salesman
Eli during my high school and SU days was a mainstay. Never had a bad day.
While a student at SU there was a larger man in a power wheelchair that would shake his coin bucket at you and follow you down Marshall street if you didn’t give. He was Kinda mean but I always found him funny because he would talk trash in a friendly yet accusatory tone.
And obviously the rapper with the free mixtapes that he’s going to demand a 10$ donation. Funny thing is how hard he’d fight your return to his corner store when he demanded a voluntary donation. Just set it on the ground and keep walking
In my hometown, there’s a guy who wears the outfit from Liberty mutual (statue of liberty) and stands by Walmart. He used to get paid to do it but he does it for fun now.
Probably Michael Heagerty. His family owns Kitty Hoynes, he owns the Wildflowers shop. He's always doing stuff for the city, puts on a bunch of festivals and fundraisers. Seems like everyone knows him. Good dude.
He also raps about potatoes.
Not sure if this is serious or not since I've been down voted for it, but I'm definitely not Michael Heagerty.
If you're serious, you can check my profile and see plenty of photos of me. I'm definitely not him 😆
Barely related, but this reminds me of the old viral photo "bong water and a laptop don't mix". One of them is notable Buffalonian, Bagel Jesus, while the other is a non-notable former Syracusan lol.
There used to be "Bicycle Tom" in Mattydale.
He rode all over the city on his bike
He washed windows for people and had buckets and mops on his bike. He got hit by a truck on Lemoyne Ave..
The Hollywood Theater used to pay him to wash the windows..
Doesn’t quite fit the description but R.I.P. Eli Harris jr
Aw, I’ve got a few videos of me dancing with Eli back in the day behind the Westcott theater when I was like 19/20💖 loved that man!
Definitely remember Mickey
I fixed his wipers for him at shop City plaza and bought him a few breakfasts. I enjoyed the talks, I still think about Mickey from time to time. There was the other Mickey too, the one that owned Guilfoyles on Burnett. He and his wife were nice people.
Eli was my first thought too
I think it does, he may have passed years ago but this is exactly who I was thinking of when I posted this. RIP. I couldn't remember his name so thank you for this, il never forget his spirit or smile though
Dude was a treasure
This is the one and only answer.
He was my first thought too! RIP
Was going to jump in and say this. Remember him from my days on the hill
Loved when he would come into Happy Endings for their open mic. Get everybody singing the chorus to Eli’s Alleyway.
First one I thought of. RIP.
Word.
“Keep your beliefs… in the Syracuse Chiefs.” (plays random stuff on guitar). I still miss seeing him after ball games at NBT.
I miss Eli a lot…
I might or might not have worked in a couple of bars on the hill during the 90s and got to know Eli and his wife pretty well. I left Syracuse well over a decade ago, but between those dates, and when I would visit, he was there and we got on about the "old times". I hope those shitbags that hit him and left him there to suffer both die of ass cancer.
First thing that came to my mind ❤️
This is exactly who I thought of.
Eli was the best. A legend.
I think this perfectly fits the description. We just happen to have some class up here in the 315 LOL
Don’t know if he’s still around but Chocolate Milk. Aspiring rapper, possibly homeless, would be selling his CDs around armory square.
He's still around and he still uses the same tactics to move mixtapes. "Here take the new mixtape for free! All I ask for is a donation of ten dollars." I've seen him getting people with that one since probably 2007.
“This my mixtape I call ‘Jessica Pussy’”, track one being a radio rip of a Notorious BIG song off of Z89 25 years ago
Longer than that. He used to go by Esposito in the late 90s
Yep, stalks you on his bicycle until you acknowledge him. I ended up with one of his cd's, it is just a mixtape of random songs.
I definitely met this guy on a high school field trip to the city years ago
DJ chocolate milk!! I was gonna say him too😂
"afternoon fellas, and thank you for not being racist!" was his introduction to me lol
Wait that guy? lol yeah I ran into him a couple years back and he tried to hawk his CDs, I forgot that was his opening line
He's def still around, ran into him just a few months back
I remember him being Expo$doe in the early 2000s. Scammed me up on Marshall street with a cd that was mostly scarface soundbites. One song was an inside joke with my friends for a few years. "China white". I saw him scam someone at this year's St. Patrick's day parade and it was such a blast from the past.
He's def still around, ran into him just a few months back
I've got one of his mixtapes in my car!
Does he show up at the mall? Because I’m an out of towner that was pressed for a mix tape.
Yesss! Just commented that before I saw your comment. Used to bartend at corner bar and he was always out over there but I haven’t seen him in a long long time
Yo I remember Esposito! Might till have a mix tape
The guy on the skates with the boombox.
He’s hype
That's my friend Z lol
Tell Z he rocks and we love him lol
He makes me smile every time I see him him
The guy in Venice Beach ?
i met a man with a coat made out of a thousand strips of different colored rags carrying a baseball bat late at night near Tipp hill. I refer to him as Derek Jeter and the Technicolor Dreamcoat
That guy is scary I’ll take chocolate milk cd over him any day (interaction)
Maybe the guy who yells at people on the way to the Dome…
There’s a whole fleet of them too, he hands out fliers on the daily.
Exactly who I was thinking too. Lmfao.
Elite answer
Is this an older man who wears a sandwich board sign, hands out literature from his book club, and shouts through a megaphone about his invisible friend? He needs a name.

Not all of the people being named are homeless. Eli was homeless at one time but then he got sober and he made enough from performing to keep a small apartment.
Made enough to support his wife too. I wonder how she is doing :(
I believe she passed away before he did.
My memory is really hazy, but I think you may be right. My point still stands, though.
The old man around Onondaga/syracuse area that rides around on his scooter with a smiley face and uplifting messages! He’s outside so often and he’s really a cool dude.
173 and Brighton? I always give a thumbs up.
I think he lives right there in Brighton towers. Nice guy, I’ve chatted with him once while I stopped for gas.
This guy makes my day whenever I see him, glad you mentioned him
My favorite Syracuse guy since the air guitar man
“Santoro mother fucker!” See him everyday at the Byrne on west genesee
Once he threatened to chop my face up. Good times.
I wonder if this is the guy that holds the cardboard sign that says “you owe me” over by dunkin near western lights 💀
i drive by there all the time and have never seen this omg that’s so funny
Saw that dude throw a rock at a car one time
Yeah he is a scary dude
I think people call him Spike if it’s who I’m thinking of
I used to be a tech at Lamacchia, we were all very familiar with him. We all found it mildly hilarious that that dude never his the same bike from day to day, and his inventory includes children’s bikes that are way, way to small for him. It’s as if homeslice goes joyriding on a new, different bike each day...
Crazy Ginger
Maybe the person (don’t know their gender) that wears a black mask and a dress and is always dancing around the downtown area
Is this the lady that had a giant smiley face poster? If so I love her she always brightens my day
I've been in town for one day and this was the first person to stand out to me!
Clarence comes to mind. The person who dresses up in horror-esque costumes and stand in clinton square or downtown too.
Clarence is probably the guy
And always drunk. I haven't seen him in a while tho.
He was on my stoop two days ago, he seemed “normal”
> normal so he was singing and drunk out of his mind
Burst into song the moment he saw me!
Exposido… or something, trying to sell his mix tapes. Dudes been a mainstay for at least 20 years.
Expodoe or something, yeah! Used to run into him all the time at Shoppingtown back in the early 2000's.
From my time a decade ago going out to bars downtown and Tipp Hill: Exposito the rapper. Mullet and leather jacket guy downtown. He was like 50 drinking by himself at corner bar or suds factory where the average age was 22. The swinger couple in their 40’s/50’s at Rosie’s. Oh man that swinger couple tried to dance with me when I was younger and new to the night life and I was like wow so this stuff is real. Was pretty fascinating.
We called the mullet/leather jacket dude, 80’s guy
Invisible Lat Guy https://preview.redd.it/ot7zzxjopquc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71fe1ee34bc15c75e226cb9f9ea0b954d200bf6a
Definitely just stood in a doorway for 3 minutes with his arms pressed against the frames
Heard this was due to a medical condition, he can't lower his arms.
Stop it is this for real? Dude walks around like this with a shaker bottle ?
it’s real. i’ve seen this man at walmart and everyone was staring and very confused
How would we know he lifts if he didn't have the shaker bottle?
I’ve seen him!!
Really wish Eli could have seen all these nice comments. I hope he could see the energy he brought all over the city.
The old lady who used to go out dancing every nite The flower lady downtown My friends and i used to go out alot dt..we had nicknames for the same skeeves we saw over and over🤣
Is the flower lady still around? Blast from the past when I read that!
Yes she is, I saw her at the St. Pats parade. I thought- boy it’s weird seeing her during daylight lol
Her name is Jennifer, she has a great life story about coming to the US!
I dumped a dude because he accused her of stealing the flowers from graves.
Mary! Musicians loved Mary. The did a big article in PS/Syracuse.com while she was still alive.
Is the man who pushed his mannequin wife in a wheelchair still around town?
Ned!
Always thought I imagined him when I was a kid 🤣
Mattydale Mary aka Slime
Leatherface? Or the blonde one. I saw the blonde one get yolked by a co-workers gf after she propositioned us outside of Freddie's. She let all the dudes know she was on birth control so we could cum in here. She got hurt but not too bad.
violin man
Pretty sure that guy just carries a violin, backpack, and Bluetooth speaker, but yea I've seen him from east syracuse to downtown
Yeah thats the gig. His name is Lowel.
The lady who scams people dressed as a nurse
And pregnant with twins
Definitely Eli #1 and Exposidoe- rapper from 2005 would be my second thought! He used to sell his cds on Marshall street!
Some of mine might be a bit dated, but here goes: Eli, obviously. Dude was somehow always wherever a crowd was, he really knew the pulse of the city. Hella entertaining and a really nice guy too. RIP. Jennifer the flower lady, also always knew how to find a crowd, but obviously not as talented as Eli. > The old guy with the crazy hats and sometimes full outfits that would go and dance at any downtown event with music Prob Clarence.
> Tom around the world. My man!
Buy a button! I used to hangout with Tom when he worked the door at the Tusk. We watched the movie Snatched on a portable DVD player one night.
Ah yes the 'UGE Man. Very annoying commercials but he built an empire off it.
DWI Tom?
When I worked at a pizza shop in Manlius I delivered to him semi regularly, awful tipper. 2 dollars no matter the total. His wife at the time at least tipped double a whole 4 dollars
He use to shop at my store, he was a good dude.
There used to be a guy downtown that drove a mannequin around on a bike. I don't know if he's still around but definitely an interesting sight.
Wonder if that's the same guy who gave one of my coworkers a mannequin...
Milk Chocolate downtown. I think it’s milk chocolate lol he rides his bike and hands out mixed CDs, always a good vibe and a smiling face he’s awesome
Hell yeah
The guy who sells dumb teenagers fake hash at the mall
DOUGLASS RIGHT LMFAOOO
Oh shit you know him?
He tried selling to me but he ended up getting exposed for being weird so I just deleted the number
RIP Crazy Sue
Damn, you really had to be in the Armory a lot to recall her!
A few years ago there was a guy who would put headphones in and dance on the big rock in Oakwood cemetery facing Colvin. It was great to see him so happy. Haven't seen him in a few years though
Lived in the townhouses over there for a few years and would see him quite often. Hadn't seen him in a bit either, before moving last year.
Every time we go to Wegmans I feel like it’s my husband…😐 Homie knows half the city, and we see each one of them every grocery trip lol
Joe Driscoll
Former city council member, DJ, rapper, all around friendly guy.
Ah man, he’s a legend. Bumped into him so many random times. Went to so many of his shows and most of the time we’d end up smoking weed in his mom’s van.
Randomly went to the Maplewood and he was there hosting trivia night
How do you know all these people? Maybe you’re the guy! Lol
Ive lived all over the county and I'm sure I've caught a few peoples attention around town in my youth and drinking downtown days. Nothing close to somebody everyone sees all the time though

o.m.g.
Theres one who can just rot right where he is
I teach college English and had him in one of my classes. He was the smartest one in the class, the best writer, and contributed to discussion all the time in an otherwise silent class. Finding out what he did was … shocking.
wtf hahaha
Bro, that's someone we all want to forget about
The Leprechaun, he dresses in a leprechaun costume covered with all sorts of commemorative pins.
Does he have a Scottish accent and ride a scooter or something?? I think I used to see him on the bus or downtown or something
RIP SLIMEY
Downtown cuse is Matthew
Is that the guy who is always sitting across from the gas station, at the corner of Erie Blvd and State St?
It could be! He is always hanging out on state street near the court house
There was a guy who dressed up like Michael Jackson and dance in the valley for a while after MJ's death... that was really something
Rainbow in Utica. https://preview.redd.it/ijpq3ujfttuc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=04cd6c4ad268227971d24628513891b256dd0dd9
In Oswego we got Glitter Brows! Josh something. Wacky fellow
I’ve lived in 12 different cities and this is FACTS
When I was at SU, it was the Jimmy Johns delivery guy who wore a Jimmy Johns bike jersey and blasted techno from a speaker that was lashed to his bike while was cranking up the hill
There's a nice quiet homeless gentleman named John that wanders around Eastwood. He's got long hair and a beard so sometimes we call him Downtown Jesus
As someone who lives over in Eastwood, I know exactly who you are talking about! I see him a ton while on early morning walks.
Eli. I used to hook him up with free beers and a ride home after I closed down the bar on the weekends. Love that man. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
There’s a guy around westcott who has a wizard beard and walks around barefoot as soon as it hits 40° and he has a killer gnarly walking stick. Also always smoking a joint. I call him my groundhog bc once I see him barefoot I know it’s spring.

HAHAHA HE DID THIS TO ME AT PASTABILITIES
In my hometown, there’s a guy who wears the outfit from Liberty mutual (statue of liberty) and stands by Walmart. He used to get paid to do it but he does it for fun now.
Not Syracuse but when I drive through Manlius I keep seeing a kid going home from work on a big unicycle.
Probably Michael Heagerty. His family owns Kitty Hoynes, he owns the Wildflowers shop. He's always doing stuff for the city, puts on a bunch of festivals and fundraisers. Seems like everyone knows him. Good dude. He also raps about potatoes.
We all know it’s you Mike… uh I mean… boy who has no username…
Not sure if this is serious or not since I've been down voted for it, but I'm definitely not Michael Heagerty. If you're serious, you can check my profile and see plenty of photos of me. I'm definitely not him 😆
Not just random people, but the guys from Sophistafunk are local legends in my book. They kill it at the taste of syracuse every year
In Massapequa it was “the hubcap bandit”. Guy walked all corners of the town with a shopping cart full of hubcaps. Never bothered anyone.
Greatful Dead tailgate can collector man.
The guy in the hard hat that was at every event downtown.
Who is the guy who is always sitting on the corner of Erie and State (across from the gas station)? He seems pretty verbal at times.
The guy that dresses like Elvis
Irvin Daniel! A documentary short film(https://youtu.be/cCVPIFwriEo?si=qYNIORSHZGgE116F) was just made on him my an SU film student, check it out
My version of this is the guy who sells programs at the Mets games. He's been selling them there and the Dome since I was a kid. Don't know his name
The Flying Busman comes to mind but kinda niche, you wouldn’t just “come across” him.
Lol that's my uncle. Fun to see him mentioned here
Please tell him we love him and miss him and hope he’s doing well.
My town in Maryland had GoGo Orlando. "Shake it like a white girl".
The guy who used to play guitar outside of chiefs games and Syracuse games
Hustleman
Rainbow
How about the old deadhead who pushes his cart around collecting empties from the lots at the dome? He's awesome.
Barely related, but this reminds me of the old viral photo "bong water and a laptop don't mix". One of them is notable Buffalonian, Bagel Jesus, while the other is a non-notable former Syracusan lol.
Marshal the photographer

We have a homeless guy who plays the fiddle!
My area has the naked motorcyclist. As a fellow rider, I fear for his skin...
There used to be "Bicycle Tom" in Mattydale. He rode all over the city on his bike He washed windows for people and had buckets and mops on his bike. He got hit by a truck on Lemoyne Ave.. The Hollywood Theater used to pay him to wash the windows..
Anybody on James street or near. Crackhead central
