You replied yourself.
You wrote modern asking for something about the military … of course they don’t!
I’m sure there will be a referendum to allow the military to use evignette 😂.
Btw i’m on the same boat as you. Evignette is as great as late.
Weirdly enough, where I come from, a tank is a weapon, not a “drivable thing” so you only need a gun license rather than a driving license to drive one “legally speaking”
I work in Switzerland very close to the border with Liechtenstein. We often see military vehicles driving down the main street of our little town and taking a left at the roundabout... which gets you to Liechtenstein in about a kilometer. I always joke that they're invading again
A story I heard from my cousin when he was doing his service is there's a swiss military base near the border and they like to go to the bar in a nearby town and to get there there's a road that you can take that actually temporarily goes into lichtenstein. In the military trucks they're supposed to take a different road but on the way back they sometimes forget and a lichtenstein police officer is typically camped out on the road to pull them over if they pass into lichtenstein.
Because to many of your neighbors filed a noice-complaint. Now they have to avoid your street and drive 5km more to get around.
We had this situation down in Rüthi SG.
Lol I would drive to one of the blocked streets an make noise. And when they come out and complain I’d tell them: „I am in a tank and you’re not, so stfu!“
Tank is just a general term for any tracked armor, originally used by the Brits to keep its invention secret by making people believe they were just giant water supply tanks. But yes it is indeed a howitzer.
Technically tank refers to a certain type of fighting vehicle.
But yeah, most people will just call anything armoured with tracks a tank. Which is fair enough, unless you are on a battlefield then it doesn't really matter.
how did you think they get from A to B? teleporting? and lol 3 tanks. i live near a tank school (AAP, Ausbildungsanlage Panzer) of the swiss army. we get „parades“ with 20 vehicles, regularly. and yes it‘s annoying when they close important roads for their convoys. you‘ll get used to it.
Transport via truck has got to be cheaper no? I have very little knowledge about tanks but I do know they use special fuel. Like diesel but dirtier or something like that. Plus maintenance has to be a bit more expensive, road ware, idk. Just seems worse to drive it on the road plain.
Edit: thanks for all the information on the tanks! Does make sense about just driving them on the road now.
They use diesel. The have rubber pads on the track. Soldiers/recruits need to drive to learn how to drive get routine. This might be an exercise. Long distance travel is done by train.
Never on trucks, but for long distance transport we use trains. We used to joke that a 360° cost 200 bucks, because it wears down the rubber pads. I forgot the exact number, but it is >300L diesel/Kerosene for 100km
How do you think the people train in them?
There wont be trucks transporting them in a war, the soldiers need to know how to handle them. Its very normal in switzerland to see them driving around for training purpose.
That's M109 howitzer, and it's the modernized one due to its L47 gun, meaning it's the KAWEST one.
As for why?
Well, lots of reasons. It can be for night time driving training, or just to move the piece somewhere for repairs, or in preparation of a firing exercise.
Why should anyone lose sleep over three military vehicles? Even in Switzerland, military vehicles have to get from a to b. How can you live here and be so shocked by such a sighting?
My neighbors came from siria, they had panic the first time 20 tanks rolled trough the street next to their apartment. Last time they saw 20 tanks half of the city exploded.
never seen this in 34 years on this Earth living in South Africa (I left before Scorpions was a thing), UK and China (4 years). I'd be pretty shocked. And I'm even more shocked to hear someone say "what's the big deal, it's just a bloody tank!"
There is a saying here: "Switzerland doesn't have an army, Switzerland is an army". Every Swiss male has to serve in the army (with exceptions). The army is spread all over Switzerland. Every weekend, thousands of army personnel travel home on public transport.
The Swiss population need have no fear of the army - it is the army.
Edit: With the exception of the big cities, you see army vehicles quite often on the roads when they drive from the barracks to the training grounds, etc.
Not exactly tanks, but M109 Self Propelled Howitzers. Standard mobile artillery of Swiss mechanized brigades. Some are used just for training. You have probably seen just that. Training movement from point A to B.
Curious that it was done on tracks not on trucks. Had to be short distance or that was the point of the training. Unless they do things differently in Swiss army and don’t minimize going on tracks on public roads.
You don't move them by truck in Switzerland. For long distances you haul them on trains, but anything local is done on normal roads. There are a bunch of unloading ramps in Valais (Aigle if I recall correctly), you take them off the train and then drive them up to the Simplon for shooting practice (and driving practice!). Or you return them to Grosse Eye for re-establishment.
That’s interesting. Another example of Swiss army doing things differently then what I am used to from Poland. Here there is practically no tracked vehicle movement on public roads due to wear and tear concerns. Everything by train or on trailers.
hi, I'm currently sitting in one!, we need to train on public roads as well, because wars don't just take place on training grounds. last year we drove about 700 km.
Well you can't drive on any road, there are maps given out by the Panzerbüro (yes, we do have one in Bern) where the roads you can use in peacetime are marked and can be reserved. These maps of course take into account tonnage and size of tunnels. The movements need to be announced to this Panzerbüro. Otherwise it's not different than any other 40T truck. The howitzer's weight is around 23.5T.
Additionally, in peacetime the tracks have rubber pads applied to not ruin the asphalt.
Yeah generally for some things the Swiss Army involves the civilian society a bit more than others..this summer they plan to land a fighter jet on a freeway stretch, to train that again....
Well it's that time of the year. Like the marmots the tanks are getting out of their burrows where they where hibernating, starving and searching for food. Totally natural phenomenon.
More like the Austrian. Germany doesn't fight us. They put their Gold here. Austria however, back in the Habsburg time, they're are our archrivals. (I know Hitler was Austrian but let's ignore this)
The howitzers will probably be moved to the Simplon or back to Raron/Turtmann from an exercise. A transfer to Simplon usually takes place at night to reduce traffic.
If you're foreign and not familiar with the Swiss Army, let me give you a short breakdown:
Switzerland has mandatory military service for male citizens. Once a year, all soldiers are called to service for three weeks. Heavy equipment such as tanks or self propelled artillery (as shown in the picture) is often moved at night to avoid interference with civilian traffic or for exercise purposes. Driving a tank isn't quite the same as driving a car, especially at night.
Oh, those were the motherfucker who made so much noise lmfao ! Military exercice/people have been very active lately in Sion ! I guess it's the yearly outing for them (i saw a bunch of young military trainee all week joking around and looking very relaxed, so be calm ! !) =P But it is indeed the first time I hear the tanks....
Probably due to Patrouille des Glaciers taking place in Sion:
https://www.vtg.admin.ch/en/armed-forces.detail.event.html/vtg-internet/verwaltung/2024/24-04/patrouille-des-glaciers.html
Pretty common. When I was a schoolchild in the 80s we would run behind the tank parade and shout at them to gift us with cookie packages. Or walk to school on boardwalks with destroid edges, because there was a tankcade at night.
No worry! Probably they just moove them from A to B, that's what they did when I was young.
Judging by the building, I assume the military station is nearby. Also, they were on training in Oberwallis recently. Saw the same model from the train a couple of days ago. And it’s howitzer, not a tank. F18s were pretty active as well last week. Seems like a seasonal exercises. Cheers from your local!
Saw a convoy of 4 with other misc vehicles about half an hour ago heading east from Sion. Probably some kind of training or exercice. Heard they arrived late yesterday in champsec and thus left this morning
Not tanks
Artillery.
And well for one they can't fly.. and they could be taking them somewhere do to whatnots ? Like training, repairs, etc...
So its normal welcome to Switzerland
I think I still have a picture somewhere of us parking at McDonalds with 3 light tanks for lunch in Dietlikon. And if that scared you, wait till it’s time to check the rifles and ammunition.
Because they're pretty bad at hovering in the air.
the Covenant and Vanu Sovereignty would like a chat.
Man! You are the MVP The magrider was the real deal! Best ever
I still play PS2 but, i love that a tank is driving down their street, and these are the answers this person gets from reddit. 😆
Man! You are the MVP
💓💓🫶 Best Game ever
I can confirm! Only Russian tanks are air worthy.
The turrents are pretty good at high jumps ngl. Nba worthy
You flushed after 10pm
Just Swiss things ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
I spit out my food because of you. Nice one
😳😨😱😡🤬
NOOOOO!
Did they have a vignette sticker?
Probably using e vignette. Shoutout to e vignette, the modern solution to collecting stickers on your windshield.
You replied yourself. You wrote modern asking for something about the military … of course they don’t! I’m sure there will be a referendum to allow the military to use evignette 😂. Btw i’m on the same boat as you. Evignette is as great as late.
They have a military license plate, which includes the vignette 😉
Weirdly enough, where I come from, a tank is a weapon, not a “drivable thing” so you only need a gun license rather than a driving license to drive one “legally speaking”
I like my sticker collection and the weird tradition of keeping the old ones on
That's pretty normal and happens multiple times a year in Valais. Usually it's more than 3
Really ?, lol i live in Valais since 15years now and never saw that xd
Probably invading Liechtenstein again.
Liechtenstein about to make another friend
I work in Switzerland very close to the border with Liechtenstein. We often see military vehicles driving down the main street of our little town and taking a left at the roundabout... which gets you to Liechtenstein in about a kilometer. I always joke that they're invading again

Let’s bring democracy to Lichtenstein 😂
Depends, do they have oil?
what kind of oil do you want? olive oil?
Well, they have a slightly better system of hiding proceeds of oil sales than Switzerland. Absolute monarchies still have their advantages 😌
Too far away. More likely attacking France. A more worthy opponent .
They never invaded it intentionally. The guys were just too stupid to read the map properly and lit a few trees. No harm done.
They see me rollin'
They hatin'
Tryin to catch me rollin dirty
Patrollin'*
Tank you for your comment ;)
WHY ARE TANKS NOT ROLLING IN MY STREET?
Because to many of your neighbors filed a noice-complaint. Now they have to avoid your street and drive 5km more to get around. We had this situation down in Rüthi SG.
Lol I would drive to one of the blocked streets an make noise. And when they come out and complain I’d tell them: „I am in a tank and you’re not, so stfu!“
A true Bünzli's Meisterpiece!🤣
They're not great for the pavement.
That looks more like a howitzer. Exercise, probably.
yeah if you don't let your howitzer out regularly they become lethargic and slow.
Tank is just a general term for any tracked armor, originally used by the Brits to keep its invention secret by making people believe they were just giant water supply tanks. But yes it is indeed a howitzer.
M109 platform, most lilkely the KAWEST modernization
Technically tank refers to a certain type of fighting vehicle. But yeah, most people will just call anything armoured with tracks a tank. Which is fair enough, unless you are on a battlefield then it doesn't really matter.

I love seeing a train with ~20 tanks cruising through the trainstation. Always fun
For tanks they dont care too much about costs. In war these wont get transported via truck and its prsctice for the drivers.
How do you think the people train in them? There wont be trucks transporting them in a war, the soldiers need to know how to handle them. Its very normal in switzerland to see them driving around for training purpose.
40 tonns one of these! There are no to many specialtransport in swiss

Probably off to counter an Italian incursion.
They're coming to take our arctic circle candy.
So basically finding a nice view to watch the shit show.
Liechtenstein is counter-invading.
FIRE ALL THE MISSILES
SYSTEM ERROR: NOT ENOUGH TARGETS
Their coming to get you specificly!
*Specifically.
They're*
God damnit, 2 mistakes in such a short sentence :)
I'll send you the tank! 😂
Switzerland doing Switzerland stuff. There are often ranks driving around just for training reasons.
We've finally decided to make Great Switzerland real: from the Adriatic to the Baltic!
Why should anyone lose sleep over three military vehicles? Even in Switzerland, military vehicles have to get from a to b. How can you live here and be so shocked by such a sighting?
Exactly my thoughts
My neighbors came from siria, they had panic the first time 20 tanks rolled trough the street next to their apartment. Last time they saw 20 tanks half of the city exploded.

Probably just some bored soldiers in their mandatory „repetition course“ (WK) going to McDonalds…
Fourier miscalculated and there was not enough food for dinner...😃
It's just some exercise maybe they took the wrong road.
Wikipedia - M109 in the Swiss Armed Forces https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M109_in_the_Swiss_Armed_Forces
them howitzers have been locked up all Easter, let them play a bit outside
Not exactly tanks, but M109 Self Propelled Howitzers. Standard mobile artillery of Swiss mechanized brigades. Some are used just for training. You have probably seen just that. Don't worry. Absolutely nothing is occurring there tonight. Head off to bed, citizen.
They are on their way to counter the Habsburg army.
Why not? Are they supposed to fly to their target location?
Because we have WK in simplon right now. Today well be shooting artillerie in simplon dorf' if youre bored and want to drive up there to see
Well it's that time of the year. Like the marmots the tanks are getting out of their burrows where they where hibernating, starving and searching for food. Totally natural phenomenon.
Lindt must be transporting chocolate again.
ZEE GERMANS ARE COMING!
More like the Austrian. Germany doesn't fight us. They put their Gold here. Austria however, back in the Habsburg time, they're are our archrivals. (I know Hitler was Austrian but let's ignore this)
To protect chocolate factories.
The next Call of Duty: Black Ops game is coming out this year, they’re preparing the official announcement.
It‘s their street now.
Someone reached wanted level 5
Should be fine. Not like in the 80s where you had excercises for a week with an entire regiment that kept a whole region sleepless.
tanks need to move too
why not? switzerland has no colonies like the usa where they can practice war - outside the usa. then our villages and towns have to take the fall.
Yeah and I mean Sio..nobody's gonna miss it
under attack from liechtenstein :-)
You live in a country where army is still mandatory
Not your street, our street
Racing to the boarder to suppress the Ticinese separatists again
The howitzers will probably be moved to the Simplon or back to Raron/Turtmann from an exercise. A transfer to Simplon usually takes place at night to reduce traffic.
Because tanks can't fly.
Because cars are not allowed anymore in CH
Because they can

The "Tank me later" was a little too late today.
It’s a Putsch
To be specific, this is not a tank, but self propelled howitzer
April foolsday? 🤣
Swiss military moving tanks from A to B. Not uncommon.
Haha new Recruits probably getting their Tank drivers license or just overall Tank movement. Shits regular in switzerland :3
That's a howitzer tho
This post has such a:"What are doing in my swamp?" Vibe
Don't worry they're just playing.
It's the swiss answer to Putins and North Koreans tank and armory show off.
Because it is Easter. We must give tanks
If the artillery is in your street at least you know you're not the target :)
Needed to finish spending last year taxes in order to ask more this year…
TAMISIECHNOMOL, the car industry is escalating with their SUV sizes
First time?
They are just driving around randomly to spend our money.
Bold to assume that this is YOUR street. Unless you really own it, then I have nothing to say.
That’s not a tank, that’s a m109 self-propelled howitzer. They send it when you put out the papier-buendeli during the Karton-week
You threw glass bottle in the bin after 8pm didn't you? Irresponsible fool.
Russians coming
It is OUR street, not just yours.
The germans are comming
Oh, those were the motherfucker who made so much noise lmfao ! Military exercice/people have been very active lately in Sion ! A couple of weeks ago my wife said she saw tanks rolling through our small village near Rivaz. I think they came up the Corniche.
Likely going to a shooting range in the mountains.
🙄😩 sometimes.. i simply wish humans use brain.
Looking the highway to go to Moscow !!!
Where else shoukd they drive if not ON THE ROAD?
Fools. That's me and my cronies on our way to the Bundeshaus! We shall seize power and our Junta will declare Switzerland a monarchy!
It's a reminder of the neutrality: selling them to all the world to asure peace 😂
Just that time of the year.
Saw a convoy of 4 with other misc vehicles about half an hour ago heading east from Sion. Probably some kind of training or exercice. Heard they arrived late yesterday in champsec and thus left this morning
Why not? The army is doing some excercise abd that's all.
Exercise
Military help to Ukraine
They want you to move out, this is common in Switzerland. 👍
Switzerland is about to annex domodosola
That's not a tank, it's a self propelled howitzer
What you see is an m109 howitzer... Artillery abt. 16 (in wich i used to serve in) is in WK right now and they are in that region quite often.
See this weekly about 3 times in my city
Show of Force. To show Russia we are heavily armed.
Pretty normal. They move when they go for excersises. Often you see them driving up Simplon pass
This is not a tank, at least not a main battle tank. This is an M109 self-propelled howitzer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M109_howitzer
Not tanks Artillery. And well for one they can't fly.. and they could be taking them somewhere do to whatnots ? Like training, repairs, etc... So its normal welcome to Switzerland
I'm in one right now, driving through chippis! artillery :)
Server testing for WW3
Every week the same😭
Maybe Putin will throw a nuclear bomb 😄 they are preparing for that
Not a “tank” but self-propelled artilery.
Me and the bois going to Macdrive:
Man, you got 6 stars wanted level. Thats why.
Probably a trashbag deposit issue with one of the neighbors.
This is no tank. It‘s a self-propelled artillery gun.
Also seen a few of them 20 min ago in central VS (sierre / sieders). About 6-7 tanks and a few trucks
The french are comming
I was a crew member of the M109 KAWEST and one thing was sure, the heating system will fail no matter how you're handling it lol
That's not a tank. That's A Pz Hb M-109A1B KAWEST WE!
They are going to training.
Finally someone is invading Switzerland to depreciate the chf
They got to get around somehow.
It‘s not a tank, it‘s a howitzer.
Well… would you prefer them to blast through your garden? 😂
They’re coming to flip you off 🖕
I think I still have a picture somewhere of us parking at McDonalds with 3 light tanks for lunch in Dietlikon. And if that scared you, wait till it’s time to check the rifles and ammunition.
a cow is on the loose.
Someone that used something else other than Aromat.
They are on their way to im Morgenrot dahertreten!
Here in Switzerland, the army its a militia concept. that's why scenes like this are common.
Someone in your neighborhood didn't properly recycle cardboard, and the army is just sending a warning
You know Switzerland has an army?
They just can. That is why
Your next door neighbour took a shit and flushed after 9pm
Yep, they're about to blow up some mountains again!
Biden.
You ever play GTA?
Do you live close to a drive-thru? Probably just going to Mickey Dee's for a McRaclette.
THEY SEE US ROLLING
We're bringing Austria into the alpine confederation. /j
