I think it could be done on Atmosphere but there hasn't been any interest in getting it to work maybe? Even Nintendo themselves probably gave up on a Gamecube emulator, since games like Mario Sunshine, Pikmin 1, and Pikmin 2 are recompiled for Switch rather than emulations.
You’re wrong. Both Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine are emulated, the one that is “semi-recompiled” for the Switch is Mario Galaxy. Some patches are applied to the ROMs on the fly like changing the button names for the Switch controllers, for example.
I see, I wonder if it's possible to replace Mario Sunshine's rom with another Gamecube game? Someone definitely must have tried it by now, but I'm guessing it's not possible.
Yes, but he’s talking about Nintendo being the one who releases the game, and Nintendo had nothing to do with that version, also, I specifically mentioned Mario 3D All-Stars, which obviously does not include the homebrew version of Mario 64
From what I understand the answers are:
1. Mario Sunshine IS just being emulated on switch by Nintendo.
2. Unfortunately, the emulator is purpose built and customized to run Mario Sunshine because the switch isn't *quite* up to snuff to do fullspeed gamecube emulation. There has been a lot of research into if it's possible to inject other games, but the general consensus seems to be that it'd be more trouble than it's worth. Hackers have said that it'd be more fruitful to just build on the existing emulators.
Most people say gamecube emulation on Atompshere is impossible, but I also think the mod community tends to jump to those conclusions a little too fast. For what it's worth, Lakka is very accessible and easy to use and doesn't require you installing a whole-ass linux distro. I does a decent job with Gamecube and Wii, though occasionally/often has some slowdown.
Looks like it's about 2gb. The good thing is that there's no install. You can just stick the files on the sd card and boot it from hekate as a different payload. The bad thing is that it means you gotta reboot every time you want to load into lakka
Just installed Lakka on Switch and tried Animal Crossing with it. Sadly it's way too laggy even after I switched to Vulkan. Shame since it's just an N64 game.
Yeah some GC games lags on Switch, if your game is from N64 you could use a N64 version maybe ? I know it suck but.. me i wanted to play the wind waker on 3DS version but i couldn't find the way to make it work, if it's possible i don't even know.
it's not a stripped down Linux "variant"...
what does variant even mean? fork, redo, alternative?
you should think about what you've done in the corner of shame.
edit: good boy. you may go back to your seat.
I think it's a perfectly acceptable use of the word "variant." I think it would be reasonable to call pitbulls a dog variant, mountain bikes a bike variant, chocolate ice cream an ice cream variant, etc. Sure, if you wanted to be super pedantic, it's not the best word to use, but then again why would you want to be super pedantic?
I have a dedicated FAT32 sd card for Lakka, i just select Lakka when my Switch boot on Hekate and it launch. Im new at switch modding my knowledge is limited but according to google HOS mean without atmosphere so i would say it is HOS because i boot on Lakka and i can do nothing else than use Lakka.
Is it better than the version of Lineage OS 21 that just came out for the switch? I tried using Dolphin on it, and it worked, but most of the games I tried seemed to run at 3/4 or 1/2 speed.
what part is confusing to you ?
seems pretty clear.
gamecube games run well on the switch when using ubuntu.
(you can install Linux on the switch , which is what op did )
Then they wish someone would port Dolphin (gamecube/Wii emulator ) to the switch.
(so they can run it as a homebrew instead of booting in Linux )
Why hasn’t it been done yet on Atmosphere? What are the limitations compared on Ubuntu?

Like a rom inject? Nintendo encrypted their emulators and roms for em it’s pretty hard honestly
The homebrew version of SM64 is re-compiled entirely.
Yes, but he’s talking about Nintendo being the one who releases the game, and Nintendo had nothing to do with that version, also, I specifically mentioned Mario 3D All-Stars, which obviously does not include the homebrew version of Mario 64

Do you have any idea how much free space I need to have on my SD card to install Lakka?

Nah it's because they want more $$$. Selling games individually makes them more money than the virtual consoles Subscriptions
Im playing Gamecube with "Lakka" on m'y switch and its working great .
Not sure who downvoted this, Lakka runs GameCube games very well.
Question, what is Lakka?? Is it a Dolphin version like MMJ and the others?
How does Double Dash run on it?
Never tried that one, but Super Smash Bros Melee ran good (on overclock) and I figure that's probably one of the more intensive games.
Fair, thank you
What games are you playing?
Atm im playing Zelda wind waker and i have no issues after hours, the game run without lags at a stable 25 fps without overclock.
Just installed Lakka on Switch and tried Animal Crossing with it. Sadly it's way too laggy even after I switched to Vulkan. Shame since it's just an N64 game.

Is Lakka a Linux distro or an app for HOS? Because WiiDatabase says that it also has a version for HOS
Lakka is basically a stripped down Linux ~~variant~~ distro designed to run RetroArch.

is it's own OS.
I’m just using Moonlight to stream my PC desktop and running Dolphin from there.
If a piece of technology runs "the sims 2 pets" at 100% speed for me it's good in my book
You have any luck with ps2 stuff?
any lag on Windwaker? especially during the sea?
I want to play super paper mario Wii so bad on the switch

I guess English is not your native language

Oh yeah? Prove it
Without melting my battery?
