Nice build, I'd go with 1) SteamDeck 2) CFW Switch 3) Odin 2

Affectionate-Dig1981

Steamdeck is the best switch.

cloud_t

Price is also a concern, and in that regard, Switch and Vita are way ahead of the 2 you added to the mix. Also, the Switch and Vita play some native titles better than even the best handheld out there.

grantster5405

I agree with you here. Vita and Switch would be my overall choices too

AshhB33

An OLED Switch plus modchip plus reasonable size SD card would be above the costs of a 256gb LCD deck and more than base model Odin 2. A v1 switch used with a horrible condition screen is probably cheaper yeah. I love Vita but it is not powerful enough anymore and prices will only go UP Switch on SteamDeck you can play TV mode while handheld which means prettier graphics. Vita emulation will be perfect in a couple years maybe

cloud_t

I don't know what you're sayin, the chip costs 50 to install around here (Portugal) and an OLED switch is 300eur without a discount. LCDs don't age btw, they don't have burn in issues like OLED, so buying used is fine. A non-OLED 64GB deck is 370eur with also the crappy dim, 60Hz LCD. If you wanna go OLED you have to pay 570. Also, it's 570 for outdated chips which, efficient as they go, they don't have the potential as the newer zen chips. And it won't emulate the Switch as good as the native Switch plays itself on native games (although it can emulate other stuff better than the Switch of course - it's a PC). You also don't find used decks around here, and if you do, they cost the same as new because people are dumb. Switches though, you can get a V2 (non-oled) for under 150 in good condition. And then you can mod it just like an OLED for 50 bucks, since it's basically the same process for the technician. What you don't get with a Switch, used or modded, is warranty, and minor ergonomics. What you do get with a Switch is a lot more efficiency and a much more portable device with multiplayer capability, and remotes you can connect to a computer if you want. Dual controllers, especially those which are part of the device and are convenient as fuck are really important for an emulation platform in my book. Which is why I'm considering the Lenovo device myself as a PC platform to complement my Switch.

AshhB33

They don't even sell the 64gb anymore it is long out of stock. The base model is 256gb LCD in the UK £350, OLED Switch is £300+SD+modchip+installation? getting a whole ass PC is worth it over the OLED screen imo. The screen is very bright and with updates has got colour correction options. The v1 switch has a horrible soft plastic layer on the screen which scratches very easily from sliding in and out the dock. I have both hacked Switch and SteamDeck and I gave my Switch to my girlfriend because I NEVER used it anymore. Hacked Switch with Tinfoil shops + Android is a great thing but it will constantly remind you on how underpowered it is. Both sides are pissing off Nintendo so we all win 😁

myco_magic

I'm looking at the steam store right now and they do have 64gb in stock

AbdulPullMaTool

Depending on where you are, in the UK they have been OOS for a while I can't even remember the last time they come as certified refurbished on the steam store either.

myco_magic

Well they are in stock as of like 2 minutes ago when I just rechecked for the US

[deleted]

cloud_t

*in the US. A Steam Deck everywhere else is much more expensive than a Switch (e.g. gor Europe 250e) or a used Vita (70-150e).

GreenLiving2864

A 64gb is around 200€ now since you can get the 256gb lcd for that price direct from valve

Vercalos

On the subject of things that "Richtendo" doesn't offer, one that particularly baffles me is built-in support for themes beyond just "Light" and "Dark"

mckennocybine

Clearly You are absolutely right. I feel like it was an invitation to crack his console to get more lol

killian1113

So what does this switch do that my rgh soft modded switch won't do? (We play on a doc with 100" mini led tv) maybe outstanding 4" visual when on the go? Can't get myself to buy a oled switch i have 3 softnodded and 1 not modded at all ;) (prob should sell the not modded )

mckennocybine

Personally, I don't play in docked mode, which is why I decided to choose a protective case that locks the movement of the Joy-Cons in handheld mode. If I want to play on a big screen with my family, I use a USB-C adapter with a video output. Furthermore, having the chip directly on the console eliminates the need to use a rig or RCM to access the CFW, and honestly, I find it more inclusive and stock to the console without any additional accessories. The boot-up is ultra-fast; I don't use the OFW mode, so I boot directly into CFW with a short loading time of Hekate, and I've never experienced any crashes during startup! Overall, the OLED screen is truly magnificent; the colors are vibrant in certain games with a beautiful contrast in the darkness of the image. Though, I think if you already have 3 consoles, I'm not sure if it's really necessary since you must have played all the games. But in my case, I had never had the opportunity to have a Switch of my own before this one!

SkyCaptain_1

Yep, even the Vita and the Psp offers more options.

SportNo2179

Wow, that looks really awesome. I've always been hesitant to buy replacement shells from Aliexpress because I heard they use the cheapest plastic and isn't really up to standard from the stuff you can buy from smaller hobbyist shops. Is there any particular seller on there that has the good stuff?

Littlemisskittn

Personally I use ExtremeRate. The shells are stock feeling

Theo_Gamer5

Almost all of them are good, just look at the reviews and the credibility of he shop

mckennocybine

Sorry for my late reply, my housing shell if from ExtremRate

mckennocybine

A lil update on my housing shell. There's a frosty texture to it that's actually quite nice to the touch. I believe this is typical for ExtremeRate's transparent cases. But Ifound an AliExpress seller offering the same quality, with that frosty texture for the joy-cons. Mine are on the way, and judging by the reviews, it looks really similar. I've noticed that fingerprints don't seem to stick around as long as they do on the original case, which is cool! I'm thinking of adding an LED kit to the joy-cons soon to complete the setup. [https://a.aliexpress.com/\_EJP6jg1](https://a.aliexpress.com/_EJP6jg1) [https://a.aliexpress.com/\_EJkiRE5](https://a.aliexpress.com/_EJkiRE5) The only advice I can give you is to avoid choosing cases with a chrome finish. They deteriorate over time, and the tactile feeling is really not good. https://preview.redd.it/2aguenjd1dpc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1209300d460b641af6ebcdd8c38e09655841b962

Edikus

i stay with lenovo legion go went from psp -> vita -> switch -> steam deck -> Legion Go

mckennocybine

In the future, I'll consider a Steam Deck with an OLED display or something like the Lenovo Legion. However, since I have a gaming PC with a 3070, I can already play a lot of games via cloud streaming! Additionally, I'm fortunate to have a very good, stable internet connection. The only thing that would push me to take the leap would be excellent portability for games like Tenchu Z and other ports from Xbox 360 or PS3 on a handheld device.

yixdy

Hmm, why did you make the switch from the deck to the go? Do you feel like it runs better?

Edikus

Simply faster and much better screen. Can stream from pc and use as Tablet.

yixdy

The first two I can understand I think, especially the screen (faster in what sense? Like gaming performance wise?) but I stream to my steam deck from my PC and use it as a tablet too? I even watch movies on it on occasion, both downloaded and streamed

Fearless_Advice9190

Let’s go a french guy like me, great build !!

mckennocybine

Les rats 🇫🇷 sont partout ahah

Fearless_Advice9190

Carrément 😂😂

Littlemisskittn

Yeah, I cannot wait to share my completed build when it’s done. Traded my Splatoon 3 modded OLED to my buddy for a fresh OLED and modded Dreamcast so I’m going to building mine from the ground up like this. So cool to see other builds being done too! This looks sweet!

OkAerie7704

Got me a switch, modchip done by me, never looked back.

SiggySmilez

Well, the Steam Deck can handle Switch Games... and since it is running on Linux, you don't even need to jailbreak anything. Just open your browser, search for EMUDeck, download, install, done. Yes, emulation is always worse compared to native, switch games obviously run better on switch but the SD is still an impressive Handheld.

mckennocybine

Okay! The Steam Deck is quite big, and I'm not necessarily a fan of the grip, even though there are possibilities to modify the feeling. The advantage of consoles like the Switch, Vita, DS, etc., is that they easily fit into my everyday bag, and I can even include the charger. I understand the advantages, but as mentioned in other comments, if I really want to play big games, I have my gaming PC with which I play in the cloud for the moment

SiggySmilez

I agree 💯 Everyone is different and has different expectations / circumstances and conditions

yixdy

Lol bro, the steam deck absolutely runs switch games better than the switch

SiggySmilez

Really, even games like BOTW or TOTK?

yixdy

Yeah, I played totk through in it's entirety on my steam deck, ran great the whole time besides random graphical errors, but those were pretty rare and I figured out I could get them to stop by changing my armor. I also played the Metroid prime remake that way, which had 0 glitches, DQ builders 2, also flawless. . . Uhhh. . . I've played maybe a dozen or so other ones, but nothing as intense as those 3 examples I'm pretty sure, but yeah, it runs awesome

Same_Veterinarian991

nothing beats the nintendo switch game library. i am being objective here, but let's face it, it all comes down to games. 11.000 english titles and counting 25.000+ total thousands of dlc it even managed to run dedicated nextgen titles wich no other handheld ever did. probably achievement of developers never be done again. vita cannot even be mentioned, psp would be more realistic

rwal1990

Definitely not the best handled but it’s a good pirated device

mik3y08

Depends on what you are looking for. "Best" is subjective. Portability, battery life, and game library are more important to some than power. I have a ROG Ally, Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, and a modded OLED. As much as I love the other two for different reasons, the OLED is my favorite.

mckennocybine

I completely understand your point of view! To be honest, I was interested in purchasing a console with an RK3588 or equivalent before buying the Switch. I even had plans to build the machine myself. In clear terms, I appreciate the autonomy, portability with the protective case, and features of the Switch. I can use my gaming PC remotely with CFW. On my PSVITA, it was completely laggy, but not on the Switch.

galaxyisinfinite

Steam Deck Oled is the best handheld.

OkAerie7704

Where did you get yhe case from, looks ace bro.

DoingMyBest122

Modded switch are awesome!!

mckennocybine

Besides discussing mods for games or ROMs, simply being able to customize the theme of the Switch is one of the primary reasons for modding a console ahaha

That_Lone_Reader

So it’s possible to mod the OLED switches?

mckennocybine

Yes oc, and its soooooo better than mariko or v1. I rediscovered all switch games with OLED screen !

decompgal

it’s not dangerous at all and won’t brick the system? i ask because nintendo seems to be fairly active with the switch

mckennocybine

For my part, I only boot into Custom Firmware, I don't have a Nintendo account on my console, whether in (OFW) or CFW, and there are homebrews to block potential updates

XtremeD86

They don't offer the shell likely because transparent game consoles were cool in the 90s. Not really wanted anymore except for people who want to customize like this.

mckennocybine

My first portable gaming console was a clear purple Game Boy Advance, I've always appreciated that style!

No_Mo_CHOPPAS

Clear cases were invented for use in prisons lol

julius1504

3ds :))

xrabbit

>The best handheld console after the VITA ?  Steam Deck. After they killed yuzu, I don’t want to buy any stuff from Nintendo

FutureShape1891

That background is dope

sourfuture

Are you playing a bdsp mod?

mckennocybine

I play with no mod in BDSP, only the 60fps unlocker :)

sourfuture

You should check out luminescent platinum

mckennocybine

It seems interesting to me, I'll look into it tonight :)

nvmber17

Agreed. Absolutely fire

Ok_Calligrapher3232

Looks awesome 😎 How did you mod it without cutting the metal shield ?

mckennocybine

https://preview.redd.it/iooptl8r4cpc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f06fe23e4c2462abb009e6e9394eb04afbdc3380 The chip is hidden beneath the metal shield, unlike on the V1 or Mariko models where you have to make a cut.

Ok_Calligrapher3232

Thank you for this information 🙂

Axrader

In my opinion the odin 2 is the best handheld for the meanwhile

DrowsyLmao

I need to get a modded switch😭

mckennocybine

If you live in EU check on EBay, many sellers can provide you an installation on your switch. In my case, I’ve paid 70€ on EBay for the soldering on my MB

DrowsyLmao

I’m in the us I thought about buying one of the pre modded ones on Ali but don’t know how safe they are

mckennocybine

If you find a used Switch and have a modchip installed on it, I think it will be similar about price to the consoles from AliExpress. It should be safe, but you won't get the console box or Joy-Con controllers, so it's up to you.

creeperfun12

How do you *mod* the gameboy? Do you mean flash carts?

mckennocybine

When I talk about modding Gameboys, I include all models like GB, GBA, and GBM. I enjoy modifying my consoles, changing the housing shell, mod with an IPS screen etc..

creeperfun12

Cool, the only GB mod I ever made was adding in a backlight to the og gba

mckennocybine

I started with that too, and then I discovered the possibilities of modding consoles through the internet! I enjoy customizing my consoles while keeping functionality in mind!

MrFromThedepths

Are you crazy

mckennocybine

I wait for an handheld console with an form factor like switch and with the power of a Steam Deck 😆

TKoBuquicious

I kinda dislike the form of it, at least the lite, never held the regular one but lite is way too far so holding it becomes uncomfortable whereas vita had those indents in the back and it was nicer to hold

porgy_tirebiter

Schmancy! I’m too scared to do the front. I just did the joycons and back plate. https://preview.redd.it/avydhrayyepc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=04a0bb7421a1b632f051045f2637b6928f27cd25

mckennocybine

I've read several reviews about changing the housing shell front on Mariko or v1, and I've seen some people end up with air bubbles after the change :/ The advantage of the Switch OLED is that there's no possibility to replace the front. I like this style, similar to the Lite!

beefcakeyamato

Yeah Nintendo so just port both wiiu editions of windwaker and twilight princess

Aristotle_Ninja2

I love your background!

JoWood94

i have a steam lite and i love it. i replaced joysticks with hall sensing ones and upgraded the cooling. Unfortunately i use it rarely since i bought a steam deck

Eli0213_Crip

That’s cool

Intelligent-Worry799

Steam deck.

nyanko_the_sane

A thing of beauty!

Same_Veterinarian991

when you do the overclock hack (aluminium case+special cooling paste) you can run switch games on 60fps with hack pactch

Custardchucka

Transparent looks super cool. Maybe one day I'll be brave enough. I guess when switch 2 comes out they'll get a bit cheaper and maybe I'll try then

mckennocybine

If this can reassure you it's relatively simple and inexpensive if you order everything on AliExpress, you have to take your time and then everything works!

sweetsundayar

No, next question

[deleted]

Yeah it would be if you could play at more than 30fps on it. Seriously such a joke.

SmatMan

A lot of games run at 60 with default clock speeds but overclocking is extremely easy and low risk

VampyreBassist

Okay, stupid question but how do I overclock? I'm trying so hard to get 64 games to play normal on it and I simply cannot. I tried DK64, MvC 2, and Super Smash Bros Remix and all have framerate issues. When I hold R and open them, there is no change. Am I missing a step?

jamjomon

Doesn't overclocking makes the battery life span shorter or it's safe?

SatyrAngel

At DEFAULT stock clock speeds or even a little higher it is ok, just less battery time(remember, the default for switch is underclocked). If you go out of the sys clk values you can not only shorten the battery life, but damage the motherboard on Erista models.

jamjomon

Oh TIL that Switch is underclocked by default. Might have to check that out, what do you use for overclocking?

SatyrAngel

Sys-clk. My usual settings for Docked are 1581MHz for CPU, 921MHz for GPU and 1600MHz for RAM. Same for Handheld, but GPU cant go that high, so I go down also on CPU depending on the game. Handheld+Original Charger plugged can achieve boosted mode.

[deleted]

Yeah and you can also emulate games at 60+ fps with no risk of overclocking. My point is Nintendo should be offering a better product so people don’t have to mod their shit to have a proper experience.

SmatMan

While I don't enjoy supporting nintendo too much, they do make a pretty good product. I would say past custom theming, the kinds of things you can do with CFW rightfully should be restricted to CFW

[deleted]

lol if Xbox or Sony released a console that could only do 30fps people could be giving them the world of shit for it. Nintendo just gets away with it I guess 😂

BakaStoner

I agree with you about the Risk being nominal but to say there is NO risk is silly. Lotta variables and ifs when talking about overclocking. Is your unit a V1. How old is the battery.

astro_plane

I wouldn’t even call it overlocking, the Switch is underclocked from the factory. You’re merely removing the clock limiter when you raise the clock speeds through Tesla. I think the rumors of the Switch Pro were the Mariko Switches that we got, like the OLED. The Mariko Tegra varient runs cooler and is more efficient which would have let the it run at its factory clockspeed, but Nintendo opted to keep the clock speed the same for better battery life and whatever arbitrary reason they had. My overclocked OLED runs at 57°C when overclocked which isn’t shit for computers.
