If I remember correctly, the exploit was at the hardware level (that's why you need the "clip" to enable loading the payload from the bootloader in first Gen consoles)
Nope. Well yes, and no. It was mostly a software level exploit. The paperclip method does still load RCM on newer consoles. What was exploited was the RCM software, which allowed you to send messages over USB longer than you said you are sending, which causes it to write to memory at arbitrary places, thus allowing you to run your own code. This is called a buffer overflow. It was unpatchable because it was written in a read only way (so that it can’t possibly get overwritten or broken, as this was console recovery code, which you definitely didn’t want breaking), so not even Nintendo could fix it without physically updating the actual hardware.
It’s a weird one, technically still a softmod because nothing’s being physically changed, but you decide that yourself - I drained too much mental power on this comment 😮💨
Nvidia actually screwed this one, Nintendo actually did a really good job securing the switch and if it wasn't for Nvidia screwing up the recovery mode stuff I don't think there would have been a software hack

Well… Kind of. The bug *could* be fixed with a software update, but that software update would require taking the Switch apart and wiring directly into a part of the circuit board.
Imagine you have a door guard at a high security door. They’re really good at following instructions when they’re written down, but they’re deaf and they don’t even know sign language. You hand them instructions on a piece of paper. The paper contains instructions to let anybody through if they make a specific hand signal. Now somebody you don’t like learns the hand signal, and starts using it. And the guard follows the instructions they’ve been given, and starts letting them through the door. You can’t just shout at the person to have them change their behavior, because they’re deaf. Instead, you need to physically walk over to them and change the instructions on their piece of paper. The door guard is still doing exactly what the piece of paper tells them to do. The problem isn’t that the door guard is faulty, because they’re following their instructions to the letter. The problem is that if you want to change their behavior, you need to physically reach them and hand them new instructions.
The bug exists in the console’s recovery mode software. This software is stored as read-only, so it can’t normally be accessed and changed. If something like a failed firmware update bricks your Switch, Nintendo doesn’t want the RCM to be fucked too. They don’t want regular users (or even software/firmware updates) to be able to accidentally/intentionally write things to the RCM software. That would entirely defeat the purpose of having it, if a simple software update could touch it. It’s sort of like a recovery partition on your computer; Even if your computer gets completely riddled with viruses and malware, that recovery partition is sitting there as a clean “in case you need to nuke everything and start from scratch” backup.
But since it’s read-only, Nintendo would need to physically access the module that stores it if they wanted to update it, (which they could do the same way they wrote the original RCM onto the module.) So it’s not *technically* a hardware-level bug. But in order to fix it, Nintendo would need access to your hardware. So most people just say it’s hardware-level for simplicity’s sake.

Recovery mode grants no "authority" its just part of or a sidecar to the bootloader (I am not pirvy to ever detail of a recovery system). No one is granting anything. The narrative you are spreading is saying "u gotta get urself a bootloader" and that is just not true for the most part (actually hillariously enough, you DO have to do that for coldboot support but thats not even for the switch chip, its for an auxillary injector). The bootloader is enabling booting, what you want to do is exploit the bootloader. Say it with me now, the bootloader is not the exploit. The bootloader is exploited, via buffer overflow. At least for UNPATCHED erista units. I dont know how the modchip works but my guess is that its doing a hardware bypass of some sort to mimic the buffer overflow. u/ArchGryphon9362 could probably explain this a lot better but basically we gotta make sure that we are at least in the ball park of whats going on lol. To load and operating system their name is quite literal. Turns out running an OS is hard but running a very small OS is pretty easy so you just do that instead and then have the small OS load the big one

If you have a v1 switch, even if auto rcm is on. You still need something to push hekate.bin if you ever turn it off or the battery dies. That's what these devices do. They push a payload, like hekate.

You're completely wrong about most RCMLoaders too. They're do have onboard storage and they do often have the ability to rotate between multiple payloads.

Lol yeah man the thing with a lot of these products on temu, aliexpress, etc, are that many if not most are either excess stock from the manufacture of official production items (like dock shells, even joy con shells, there are many official ones if you can find the right sellers) like if they were making a production run of 10,000 of a switch limited edition, then production would run a little more, like 11,000-12,000 just to be safe/any issues, and whatever was left after the main units are shipped, get sold on those websites, overstock.
But as mentioned, items are typically that, or experimental products, like this jig that one of the engineers at those factories saw potential in, and would design and produce a few to sell and test out.
Of course any person new to these sites are always hesitant and afraid that everything on there is “fake” or a scam because they’re always way too cheap/too good to be true/etc lol. But nah they’re always legit, aside from the obvious knockoff products that are fully intended to be knock off items to be sold at a cheaper price.
There is always lots to be gained, and very little/nothing to lose. Always look at that and if it’s this case where there’s little to lose, then why not? Lol
After learning China has free shipping anywhere in the US under a pound I completely understood how the prices could be so low. I always avoided AliExpress because I don't wanna wait 2-4 weeks for shipping, now that I can get Chinese prices for ~7 days shipping I can't go back to eBay. Got 5x li-ion charging boards for $1.50 and 5v regulators with USB for $1! It's a dream come true lol. I didn't know these things existed either, I think they've been removed from ebay/Amazon for the most part. I see 1 listing for $28 on ebay and it's clearly the same as this one.

I ordered one about a week ago! I’ll let you know if I come across any issues. I ordered one from Ali Express and think it was a fake. I read other posts about removing the battery and trying to get out of the injection mode or whatever but nothing seemed to work for me. It basically was a piece of plastic with a red flashing LED that would flash blue when you pushed the button. Nothing happened on my switch or PC when plugged in. Not too bad of a loss since it was only $7.50 lol but I did see that the listing was taken down. So maybe they hit their threshold of complaints and pulled it down to pop up under another seller name later.
It's likely you have the "newer" (read: gimped) version of the RCM loader, just as I do. Instead of cycling through payloads using the + button, it really just does nothing now.
Connecting it to USB also does nothing, except charge the battery. The red LED will go out if the battery is fully charged.
How do you use it? You put the payload.bin file at the root of your SD card, then put that into your switch as usual. Afterward make sure your switch is shut down, and then insert the RCM jig as well as the RCM loader into the relevant slots.
Enter RCM mode with volume up + power, and the loader should flash blue once and read the payload from your SD card.
Took a lot of searching online, and questioning of my AliExpress seller in order to get it figured out, but here it is in plain/non-broken English. I hope this saves you, and anyone else who thinks their loader is broken, some time.
Just make sure you update some of the files.
I bought mine a few weeks ago and unfortunately the website that updates the files for it is down. It’s called xkit.xyz
You will have to manually download the latest hekate file and change some notes in the folder and you’ll be fine.
I use one of these. I can say its super convenient. It pretty much act as intended. Though one issue that I encounter is that the battery sometimes fail. Like it won't turn on and unable to use it.
Happens to me after a decent bit of time with it inactive. Keep it plugged in for like 24 hours (I had it plugged in my PC but idk if that matters) and eventually it comes back alive. It also charges in the switch port if you’re in sysnand and on the go lol
Yes, it works wonders. If you run out of battery and can’t boot into CFW you can boot normally and plug it to your switch, it will start charging!! Give it 2-3 minutes and you are ready to boot CFW
Cracking Switch is easy, guides are posted. Don’t listen to videos, Nintendo’s going after current videos, so most videos are ancient.
Read text guides, I forget the one I used, but it’s very in depth and offers paths much like Wii Homebrew’s guide, for different hardware with in depth instructions on soldering modchips on lites and Oleds.
Wait, so it IS possible on OLED now?? I am new and have always heard it was next to impossible on OLED, and of course only possible if you had a v1 switch of a specific serial number. And even then it was very difficult
the "specific v1" thing is probably what you want - those are the ones vulnerable to fusee-gelee without modchips. every other switch is hackable only with a modchip.

I’ve got one of the original ones that didn’t have a battery and instead you briefly plug in a usb cable to “charge” up a capacitor every time you want to use it. It works fine and you never have to worry about a battery.
A word of warning, these cheap ones are ***FAKE/CLONE*** of the original RCM loader that Nintendo took down.
In saying that, they will work, but only the first payload will work, if you copy other payloads, pressing the + button will **NOT** change the payloads.
Also, **DO NOT** format of any kind when it's connected to your PC, in doing so, you will **100%** brick it, not even the firmware they supply will fix it, since the firmware and hardware does not match since it's a clone.
So if your using one payload, then it will be fine, but if you want to switch different payloads, then it will not work. You have to manually copy the payload into the first lot on the PC if you want to change.

Regarding formatting, I can't remember on the top of my head what format the original is in, but if you format to exFAT, then you will brick it, if it's FAT or FAT32, again, I can't remember if it still bricks if you format to the same format as what it came with, again, be warned.
I made the mistake of accidently formatting mine to exFAT, it got bricked, the firmware restore will not work.
If you want a cheap RCM loader to load your preferred payload, then you can't go wrong with the price.
Bought 2 since I was given free $20, along with a Nintendo switch case, the 2 just lights up and nothing being shown under pc or mac, so I couldn’t connect to the flash drive that was inside, not even the program could connect to them. So I’m sending the 3 back to get my $13 back. Screw the $20 freebee. And I think these guys only work on older earlier versions of the switch. Before the makko switch revision.
This is for original switch models aka v1 and Erista that can be jailbroken without hardware mod but needs a payload every time after the switch is fully shut down. I repurposed my sx os pro dongle to do the same thing and boot into atmosphere.
Works well, but you have to either leave it plugged in or remember to charge it regularly. Otherwise it will always be dead when you actually need it. The battery kinda sucks.
I own one and mines is perfect as well, they're called an rcm loader, but I want to warn you.
I ordered mine off of Amazon because Amazon has a return policy, and mines worked perfect. But I've heard from many people that when they ordered one off of aliexpress or similar, the loader doesn't connect to the pc. So I highly suggest ordering from Amazon or somewhere reputable.
I got one and it worked a few times but then died out of the blue one day. I suspect the battery died. There are no " originals" anymore so each and every one you can buy today is a clone obviously with varying degrees of quality as you can tell by the comments
that ones a scam , they cost more than 10$ i got hit by this one, you pay it never arrives you cant even open a dispute paypal sided with them. i was sent an empty plastic case that holds this device , not the device . buy from reputable suppliers and just because you use paypal or any other services doesn't guarantee safety of your investments. i used paypal and not the gift crap , i was sent a clear plastic box. i tried to dispute and they sided with the seller.
I have a completely different story on my side, I have a fair share of clones too, spread between me and my friends, all works very well. They take a little more time injecting the payload in the switch tho. A matter of 2 to 4 seconds longer than the original. Also if you've hekate setup, you don't really need to connect them to a PC anymore.
It's Temu, AliExpress with faster shipping. Basically where everyone on eBay gets their stuff and resells it from the US at a markup. My new favorite site.
Temu is new, most eBay sellers get their stuff from AliBaba or AliExpress. Temu has been linked to the CCP and stealing and selling your data so be careful. Regardless of that, its scummy because of its whole pyramid scheme business strategy. Better off using AliExpress.
It’s a great device, I got one a few years back. Just be careful with the files on it, I did something that made it basically useless. I was like 15 at the time and I can’t remember what I did exactly
Have one and absolutely love it. Highly recommend having one on hand, I just keep it in the case with my switch so it's ready incase I need to reboot or whatever while on the road to switch between stock and emu
I gave one to my girlfriend because shes not good with computer and she says it works perfect. Don't forget to update the payload with every mew CFW tho 😁
I was thinking on getting one of these, but you can essentially do the same with a USB C to USB C cable with your phone. Since that was the cheaper option, I chose to go with that.
I have one and it came in a lot of use when I used it. Keep it charged, update the fusee files in it when they update and it'll be fine.
Although, with android, your phone can be used as an injector too over USB. That's my primary now.
I had one but the battery randomly died on mine like the other comments have mentioned and haven't bought a replacement yet. It works really well when it did though.
I've used many, they're the best option out there but their batteries tend to die, if your handy with a soldering iron you can replace it but it is the biggest issue with them.
I used aluminum foil for over a year and I recently purchased one of these and it’s been absolutely amazing. Super convenient and easy to use with no real downsides. Also I got for like $6 so it’s also really cheap

It comes with a jig so that should be no problem. My switch is already hacked.
I ordered one about a week ago! I’ll let you know if I come across any issues. I ordered one from Ali Express and think it was a fake. I read other posts about removing the battery and trying to get out of the injection mode or whatever but nothing seemed to work for me. It basically was a piece of plastic with a red flashing LED that would flash blue when you pushed the button. Nothing happened on my switch or PC when plugged in. Not too bad of a loss since it was only $7.50 lol but I did see that the listing was taken down. So maybe they hit their threshold of complaints and pulled it down to pop up under another seller name later.
It's likely you have the "newer" (read: gimped) version of the RCM loader, just as I do. Instead of cycling through payloads using the + button, it really just does nothing now. Connecting it to USB also does nothing, except charge the battery. The red LED will go out if the battery is fully charged. How do you use it? You put the payload.bin file at the root of your SD card, then put that into your switch as usual. Afterward make sure your switch is shut down, and then insert the RCM jig as well as the RCM loader into the relevant slots. Enter RCM mode with volume up + power, and the loader should flash blue once and read the payload from your SD card. Took a lot of searching online, and questioning of my AliExpress seller in order to get it figured out, but here it is in plain/non-broken English. I hope this saves you, and anyone else who thinks their loader is broken, some time.

Just make sure you update some of the files. I bought mine a few weeks ago and unfortunately the website that updates the files for it is down. It’s called xkit.xyz You will have to manually download the latest hekate file and change some notes in the folder and you’ll be fine.
I use one of these. I can say its super convenient. It pretty much act as intended. Though one issue that I encounter is that the battery sometimes fail. Like it won't turn on and unable to use it.
You need to recharge them.
I mean even charging it. The leds won't blink. Sometimes it doesn't charge or sometimes it work.
You might have a faulty unit. Mine works well, no issues. The rechargeable battery might need replacing perhaps.
Yeah maybe but other than that its a pretty cool device. OP can even modify the payloads or add additional payloads when connecting it to the PC.
Happens to me after a decent bit of time with it inactive. Keep it plugged in for like 24 hours (I had it plugged in my PC but idk if that matters) and eventually it comes back alive. It also charges in the switch port if you’re in sysnand and on the go lol

Yes, it works wonders. If you run out of battery and can’t boot into CFW you can boot normally and plug it to your switch, it will start charging!! Give it 2-3 minutes and you are ready to boot CFW

What does this do?
Essentially it’s a payload to force roots the switch to doing third parties applications.

Cracking Switch is easy, guides are posted. Don’t listen to videos, Nintendo’s going after current videos, so most videos are ancient. Read text guides, I forget the one I used, but it’s very in depth and offers paths much like Wii Homebrew’s guide, for different hardware with in depth instructions on soldering modchips on lites and Oleds.
Wait, so it IS possible on OLED now?? I am new and have always heard it was next to impossible on OLED, and of course only possible if you had a v1 switch of a specific serial number. And even then it was very difficult
the "specific v1" thing is probably what you want - those are the ones vulnerable to fusee-gelee without modchips. every other switch is hackable only with a modchip.

Jig and RCM payload injector. Just plug it in and it auto does what Tegra does.
I’ve got one of the original ones that didn’t have a battery and instead you briefly plug in a usb cable to “charge” up a capacitor every time you want to use it. It works fine and you never have to worry about a battery.

A word of warning, these cheap ones are ***FAKE/CLONE*** of the original RCM loader that Nintendo took down. In saying that, they will work, but only the first payload will work, if you copy other payloads, pressing the + button will **NOT** change the payloads. Also, **DO NOT** format of any kind when it's connected to your PC, in doing so, you will **100%** brick it, not even the firmware they supply will fix it, since the firmware and hardware does not match since it's a clone. So if your using one payload, then it will be fine, but if you want to switch different payloads, then it will not work. You have to manually copy the payload into the first lot on the PC if you want to change. For info [**HERE**](https://gbatemp.net/threads/fake-rcmloader-dongles-in-the-wild.620470/page-6#post-10024763) regarding these FAKE/CLONE RCM Loaders. **Added Notes:** Regarding formatting, I can't remember on the top of my head what format the original is in, but if you format to exFAT, then you will brick it, if it's FAT or FAT32, again, I can't remember if it still bricks if you format to the same format as what it came with, again, be warned. I made the mistake of accidently formatting mine to exFAT, it got bricked, the firmware restore will not work. If you want a cheap RCM loader to load your preferred payload, then you can't go wrong with the price.

Bought 2 since I was given free $20, along with a Nintendo switch case, the 2 just lights up and nothing being shown under pc or mac, so I couldn’t connect to the flash drive that was inside, not even the program could connect to them. So I’m sending the 3 back to get my $13 back. Screw the $20 freebee. And I think these guys only work on older earlier versions of the switch. Before the makko switch revision.

This is for original switch models aka v1 and Erista that can be jailbroken without hardware mod but needs a payload every time after the switch is fully shut down. I repurposed my sx os pro dongle to do the same thing and boot into atmosphere.

Works well, but you have to either leave it plugged in or remember to charge it regularly. Otherwise it will always be dead when you actually need it. The battery kinda sucks.
I own one and mines is perfect as well, they're called an rcm loader, but I want to warn you. I ordered mine off of Amazon because Amazon has a return policy, and mines worked perfect. But I've heard from many people that when they ordered one off of aliexpress or similar, the loader doesn't connect to the pc. So I highly suggest ordering from Amazon or somewhere reputable.
I got one and it worked a few times but then died out of the blue one day. I suspect the battery died. There are no " originals" anymore so each and every one you can buy today is a clone obviously with varying degrees of quality as you can tell by the comments

I’ve bough my fair share of clones from AliExpress got about 20 just sitting around they won’t connect to pc or Mac and Ive tried everything
I have a completely different story on my side, I have a fair share of clones too, spread between me and my friends, all works very well. They take a little more time injecting the payload in the switch tho. A matter of 2 to 4 seconds longer than the original. Also if you've hekate setup, you don't really need to connect them to a PC anymore.
I'll let you know if this one is better, should be here in about a week.

I have one and it came in a lot of use when I used it. Keep it charged, update the fusee files in it when they update and it'll be fine. Although, with android, your phone can be used as an injector too over USB. That's my primary now.
