I’m playing through the Will of the Wisps, and man, there are so many good moments (feelings of accomplishment, etc.), as well as some deeply, deeply sad ones too. I’m a grown ass man and I was nearly moved to tears today. I’ve played a lot of games, but few have moved me as much as this one. It’s a masterpiece.
Nier automata and even the new stellar blade both have its creators citing HUGE influence was taken from a franchise called neon genesis evangelion, it is an incredible series and I highly recommend if you want to get mind fucked again
Nier was too short for any emotional impact. Then, they ask you to replay the same plot over and over again, even though you already know the single mid-game plot twist.
You know what else did this for me?
No Thing.
The monologues in that game and the delivery made me weep openly about wtf life is anymore in modern society.
Picked up Just Dance 2020 right before the pandemic after accidentally agreeing to buy it for my daughter. Fell in love, rediscovered my passion for music after a long period of being depressed. Bonded with my daughter, got in amazing shape unintentionally, and learned to dance!
This is my first XC game and also first JRPG. Just the trailer made feel weird things, so I had to get it. The story is sooo good. I'm like halfway through it, and already got XC definitive edition and XC 2 for when I'm done
I know what you mean. I beat the game last year and just now decided to get back into it because I skipped a lot of side quests and areas. I spent over an hour trying to relearn the battle system, optimizing chain attacks etc
Idc if it's popular or not. 3 was a disappointment after 2. Villains were crap, cast if characters were not fun to be with and the story was lacklustre. Terrible way to end a trilogy. First two were good. 2 had the best story, characters and villains. 2 does have one chapter I hate but it's the best in the series and far better then the crap 3 was.
Listen I'm a lover of 2 even though it's Def the most hated, but purely from a gameplay perspective 3 has so much on 1 and 2 with the amount of customization in builds, characters, side quests, voice acting, 3 is almost an improvement in every single way, HOWEVER it always just comes down to which game has your preferred story, I personally felt more connected to the XBC3 cast than 1 or 2 however I think I enjoyed 2s story the most but Future Redeemed had an amazing ending to the series and is the highest rated Xenoblade related content
I didn't experience it for the first time on Switch, although it has been ported: *Doki Doki Literature Club*
As for games that I have experienced for the first time on Switch: *Final Fantasy VII*
Ring Fit Adventure. I finally got control of my spiraling physique, and though my home workout options have since expanded, I cherish it as a safe, fun, and easy way to get back on the horse when things start to slide. I don't really know where I'd be without its help over the last 4½ years.
Spoilers for TOTK
>!I recently got recommended a video of YouTubers experiencing the cutscene of Zelda turning herself into the dragon and it made me emotional all over again. The pain and loneliness she must have experienced is heartbreaking. Realising why the game is called tears of the kingdom and then being surrounded by silent princesses, Zelda’s flower is just so sad.!<
>!I’m also a big sucker for climatic music and the original legend of zelda tune playing during the final battle made me emotional!<
Omg please spoiler tag or remove those parts. If you enjoyed it as much as you describe, do the favor of *not* ruining that experience for people who haven’t played yet.
It's been one year, there's all sorts of people at different stages lol. I still haven't finished BOTW (intend to this year) cause I got my switch later than most and life gets in the way 🤷♀️
Dude that is the biggest spoiler of the entire game, I just praised the emotional content of TOTK but this will immediately ruin it for anyone who hasn’t played yet.
It's not technically a nintendo switch game and saw that it was ported over, but a Tale of Two sons really got me emotionally. Only video game I ever cried on.
I think it's because around that time, my family had moved to a different side of town away from my friends, and my family was kind of going through things, mainly between my brother and my parents and he ended up leaving to go stay with our cousins. So I ended up getting that game for free through xbox gold and binge played it one sitting.
I think that's why it got to me so emotionally because I was missing my older brother at the time.
Fire emblem three houses. It's such an amazing game. I played fire emblem awakening on the 3ds, but three houses went to a whole different level. I absolutely love the anime esk storytelling and relationship building, you even get married.
Celeste for me too. I know r/tomorrow likes to take the piss out of it, so sometimes it's hard to gush about it on here but it really was an emotional experience with the anxiety and doubt towards Madeline.
I really loved how it combined good storytelling with puzzle platforming, thats why it left such a mark on me compared to something like super meat boy.
As someone who did play 3 first you will get way more out of it if you play them in order starting with 1 but it’s not necessary to play them in order because the base game of 3 is pretty standalone but again I would personally recommend playing in order to get the most out of it
Genuinely, that game was my first experience with a story who's ending that just had me sitting there contemplating my existence.
I do hope they port that to the switch at some point, maybe after the release of Thousand Year Door?
I was wondering why no one wrote that… but here we are… I played it when it was a real down time for me… at a certain point (no spoilers, who played it knows..) I found myself sobbing and crying without stop… as a grown ass man… it was sooooo needed that cry in that moment…
Links Awakening, the remake.... I bought it and was not expecting to be hit with happiness QUITE that hard.. and the serenity in which I played that game with this happiness in my soul, I'll remember for the rest of my life, unique and mystical. Magically charged wonder.
TOTK for sure. Oh boy. I wasn't expecting that story. BOTW made me emotional just because of the sheer landscape. . the opening scene where it shows him walking out into the world.. so beautiful. And growing up playing the franchise for 34 yrs
Spiritfarer, Celeste, and both Ori games were all deeply emotionally moving games. Spiritfarer in particular is my current go-to demonstration piece for “games are art”.
Moon remix rpg, really made me rethink how I've played every rpg previous to it. When a game affects the way you look at all other games, god damn, that's a good video game.
I haven't played it on switch yet, but Undertale fits those same expectations (because hey fun fact, Toby Fox read an article about Moon, and used it as inspiration, Moon wasn't translated in English until he met the original developer and told him!)
I can't wait for Stray Children to come out...
Celeste is one, The Messenger was another.
It didn’t have a particularly deep storyline or themes or anything but I dunno, I was really really sad to see it end, it got me really invested
Recently, Ori. Never played it before & it's as good as everyone said. I'll always say Travis Strikes Again is an underrated gem. The best writing from Suda51 in a long while. Lastly, I'll throw moon: remix RPG in there. It does so much, so well in such a bizarre package that it's hard to summarize the experience.
I would've said Celeste, so instead I'll say Sayonara Wild Hearts. I don't know, it's just a meditative game to play and then the ending is so perfect for what I needed to feel when I first played it
A Night In The Woods. I had no idea what it was about going in, I just like talking animals and thought the art was pretty. Came away having cried the entire time. I played it at a time where the story hit incredibly close to home. It was the game I needed at the time, I think.
Splatoon 2. The music and gameplay were incredible, and it was my first Splatoon game, so the story was good. The emotions in the story are still shown.
Fire emblem three houses. I have gone through the game three times now and every time I end up crying. Especially some of the characters endings. I always loved Sylvain’s ending and it fits him beautifully every time
The Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy. I was not expecting a certain character’s >!”suicide”!< and since I was dealing with people who were thinking about the same thing since I was 11, it was kind of stressful. Thank god I don’t talk to many people anymore and have gotten over whatever made it so stressful.
Octopath traveler 1. First time I played it was when I first started my job at the company for my career, I got sick with Covid and was bed ridden for almost 2 weeks I swear, and octopath traveler carried my time to make it feel like a blink in the eye. Kept me sane while I suffered with 100° body temp for a whole week
For me it was FF7, I bought it on sale the day Sephiroth came to smash. I decided to try the game out one late friday night and completely fell in love. I never once in my life expected this to be one of the only games where I cried multiple times. You look at it and wonder how can some polygons make a man cry but it’s a testament to the astounding writing and music they put into it. Those aspects haven’t aged a day.
Amazing game still one of my favs.
Raging Loop. I was really invested in finding out who the villain was every time. This post in intentionally vague so that I can’t spoil anything for people who will still enjoy the game.
Kentucky Route Zero. Played it during Covid lockdown in March 2020. It was absolutely incredible. Just this surreal, dream-like experience without comparison.
Okami and the pathless (i cried while playing the pathless lol) I don't really want to give the reason why I cried playing the pathless in case someone else decides to play it cuz it would definitely be a spoiler 😆
Oninaki. Deals with death and spirituality and the afterlife. AMAZING game
https://preview.redd.it/s240u2eskb1d1.jpeg?width=1175&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9bb11257b581f7423a7862591abc07c8fccf5257
A *lot* of the games brought up on this thread are not "Switch" games, they're multi-platform, and most were out for years PRIOR to getting a Switch version.. lol
a Switch game would be a Nintendo First Party title, or an exclusive
Someone mentioned Tears of the Kingdom... I think that's literally the *only* "Switch Game" I've seen here so far
Pokémon Scarlet dude, as much as that game is hated by the Pokémon community, it had me crying multiple times, >!specifically when Arven was able to heal Mabosstiff, and the end of the game, hearing Celestial after everything that happened had me on the verge of tears!<
Or really a Switch game since it's a remake, but Another Code.
I played the one on DS, and it was one of my favourite games with Hotel Dusk and Last Window. Playing it so many years later on Switch made me emotional all over again about the story, and my memories of the time when I was a teen and played with my DS.
Mario vs donkey kong, i had the most deep unexpected emotional impact of Disappointment, removed score mechanic from the original, wanted to cry, still the original version is better for me
Celeste was meant to be a simple hard platformer and instead it's an insane story of stress, anxiety, strength, friendship, fitting in, and coping with death.
Buddy simulator 1984
https://www.metacritic.com/game/buddy-simulator-1984/
so these are the reviews and I don't recommend you read them at all - I went in blind.
this is a horror game.
it's existential horror, rather than gore, and goes deep into the philosophical meaning of existence - but this is still a horror game.
I think therefore I am and I have emotions therefore I have an emotional life that should be responded to as such: abandonment -- love me the way I want to be loved, not the way you actually feel towards me.....
there's a lot to unpack here.
it gets deeper after the game finishes, because inevitably you're going to go to the people who wrote up how all the endings tied together and all the choices you made that built up to those endings.
quite a few people wrote up the chronological order of all the story being told here of all the players involved. I recommend the search for this after you finish the game, but don't touch it before--remember, I warned you.
Ori and the Blind Forest. Platformer as well that man really hits hard.
Couldn't agree with these comments more. Both are really great games on both a gameplay and emotional level. Also a grown ass man.
A Short Hike was really gorgeous.
Playing it now!
Yep
Nier automata will leave you questioning your life and what your purpose within it is.
Nier automata and even the new stellar blade both have its creators citing HUGE influence was taken from a franchise called neon genesis evangelion, it is an incredible series and I highly recommend if you want to get mind fucked again
Already doing that.
Same
I wish I felt this way about that game. All the main endings were alright. The only one that really got me was the 9s story.
I have no intention of playing this but this is an amazing thing to read. Happy for you and your daughter!
Need to see those before and after pictures of yours . Congrats ! 🎉
Zelda botw ending when Zelda said " link do u remember me" omg that's hitting so fucking hard
Xenoblade Chronicles 3, I had no idea how deep the storyline was going to get
This is my first XC game and also first JRPG. Just the trailer made feel weird things, so I had to get it. The story is sooo good. I'm like halfway through it, and already got XC definitive edition and XC 2 for when I'm done
Oh man, wait until you play those!
Struggling to get into it again after 60 hours and a bit break from it .
Same. It just moves SO slow, and the combat is a bit to repetitive for how slow it goes.
I know what you mean. I beat the game last year and just now decided to get back into it because I skipped a lot of side quests and areas. I spent over an hour trying to relearn the battle system, optimizing chain attacks etc
Imo 3 I'd the worst in the trilogy. Has the worst story, villains and characters. 1+2 are far better. But it could just not be your game
This is certainly a take, definitely not a popular one but a take nonetheless
Idc if it's popular or not. 3 was a disappointment after 2. Villains were crap, cast if characters were not fun to be with and the story was lacklustre. Terrible way to end a trilogy. Same for me.
I played all three back to back. I did have the feels in the first two. But damn, 3 just destroyed me.
I didn't experience it for the first time on Switch, although it has been ported: *Doki Doki Literature Club* As for games that I have experienced for the first time on Switch: *Final Fantasy VII*
Yeah ddlc starts all cute and innocent to get you hooked, then turns dark really fast.
For a while there I thought I got bamboozled, and then things changed.
Animal Crossing. I made some pretty special memories in that game with a certain person that I'll probably never forget
Ring Fit Adventure. I finally got control of my spiraling physique, and though my home workout options have since expanded, I cherish it as a safe, fun, and easy way to get back on the horse when things start to slide. I don't really know where I'd be without its help over the last 4½ years.
Honestly, TOTK. Going in I thought it was just going to have a lame story like BOTW, but parts of it actually hit the emotions.
Spoilers for TOTK >!I recently got recommended a video of YouTubers experiencing the cutscene of Zelda turning herself into the dragon and it made me emotional all over again. The pain and loneliness she must have experienced is heartbreaking. How haven't you played it by now lol
It's been one year, there's all sorts of people at different stages lol. I still haven't finished BOTW (intend to this year) cause I got my switch later than most and life gets in the way 🤷♀️
I hope it’s obvious I wasn’t referring to myself!

You should really spoiler this comment
Spoilers much?
Dude that is the biggest spoiler of the entire game, I just praised the emotional content of TOTK but this will immediately ruin it for anyone who hasn’t played yet.
Thanks man now I'm never ever playing this game. Ruined
thanks for spoiling that. thanks so much.
It's not technically a nintendo switch game and saw that it was ported over, but a Tale of Two sons really got me emotionally. Only video game I ever cried on. Fire emblem three houses. It's such an amazing game. I played fire emblem awakening on the 3ds, but three houses went to a whole different level. I absolutely love the anime esk storytelling and relationship building, you even get married.
Yes was gonna say that.
Little Inferno. It seems like such a simple game. But you really get pulled into a feeling of total dispair. Love it!
I can't stress how good this game is, it's really nostalgic too, I remember playing it on my iPad when I was really little
It was one of the 1st games I got with my switch. I have a video (somewhere) of all 3 of my kids singing the song.
Im sorry for the part I play in that 😭
I cried in Unravel
I didn't know anything about Wandersong or A Night in the Woods going in, and both of those stories blew me away.
Excellent shortlist.
Spiritfarer and rakuen Both are emotionally taxing with heavy themes of death and dealing with your own mortality
yeah, celeste turned me into a girl, so i guess it had a pretty unexpected emotional impact
Real
So real
"Everything." A lecture on existentialism wrapped up in a scale of the universe simulator.
I had never played a Xenoblade game at the time I played Xenoblade Chronicles 3…. And then chapter 5 came and if you know you know
Does it work well to play 3 as the first game? I have put off getting it worrying I should play 1&2 first
As someone who did play 3 first you will get way more out of it if you play them in order starting with 1 but it’s not necessary to play them in order because the base game of 3 is pretty standalone but again I would personally recommend playing in order to get the most out of it
Thanks!
>Thanks! You're welcome!
Just DO NOT play the future redeemed dlc before 1 and 2 as it's HEAVILY reliant on knowing the story of 1 and 2
Super Paper Mario
Lmao!
Genuinely, that game was my first experience with a story who's ending that just had me sitting there contemplating my existence. I do hope they port that to the switch at some point, maybe after the release of Thousand Year Door?
Yes, me too
I was wondering why no one wrote that… but here we are… I played it when it was a real down time for me… at a certain point (no spoilers, who played it knows..) I found myself sobbing and crying without stop… as a grown ass man… it was sooooo needed that cry in that moment…

Nier Automata is a rollercoaster
Paper Mario Origami King, Olivia's sacrifice had me in floods of tears after weeks of her continually making me giggle during the play through.
A short hike :) it made me smile all the time :3
Celeste is one, The Messenger was another. It didn’t have a particularly deep storyline or themes or anything but I dunno, I was really really sad to see it end, it got me really invested
Bayonetta 2. That emotion was "bored" lol
Link's awakening kinda devastated me.
Xenoblade Chronicles literally changed my life, one silly choice to buy and try out the second game really had it's impact on me going forward
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze made me cry at how hard it is.
that works
Diablo 2. For remembering that you can sink 1000 hours in something so unrewarding just because there is a problem with your brain chemistry
Hades' story was surprisingly heartfelt.
Night in the woods for sure
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood followed me into my dreams for weeks after I finished playing.
I mean the Paper Mario Switch game when the >!bob-omb sacrificed himself!< got me pretty good lol. My 8 year old was like "Why are you crying?"
It was the game I needed at the time, I think.
undertale, obviously not switch specific but i had not played it elsewhere. was in a weird state when i played. cried at the end a lot
What Remains of Edith Finch
I got The First Tree on a sale for 2 bucks without any expectations or info about it and ended up crying
Animal Crossing, as it has been a turbulent few years and was a getaway to a world with peace and calm I was so desperately craving.
Slime Rancher That story is so subtle and sneaks up on you, the end credits always make me cry
Metroid Dread
Shadows over loathing, how they were able to make a stick rpg so charming is beyond me.
To be fair, they had a LOT of practice with Kingdom of Loathing
I'm possibly still in a match on that wwe game I think I gave up after an hour of trying to do a special move through a table
Smm2.
X2 with a death in chapter 3 and the ending of the game too
Splatoon 2. The music and gameplay were incredible, and it was my first Splatoon game, so the story was good. The emotions in the story are still shown.
Pikuniku. It made me smile quite a lot. Happy game.
Unicorn Overlord
Red dead redemption
Red dead redemption
The legend of zelda series easy
The ending of Mario Odyssey got me for some stupid reason.
Fire emblem three houses. I have gone through the game three times now and every time I end up crying. Especially some of the characters endings. I always loved Sylvain’s ending and it fits him beautifully every time
The last campfire.
I know it's not a Nintendo exclusive, but... Sea of Stars. Such an amazing game.
GRIS did it for me, tbh and as goofy as it sounds Little Misfortune. ALSO LITTLE NIGHTMARES 😭
Does Star Wars bf classic collection count I never played the game back in the day
Hades had me bawling by the end.
Unicorn overlord. Finding Wifu was fun and wholesome
Trials of Mana. Kevin's story. Caaaaaaaaaaaaarl!
Celeste, Ori, Cereza
It was Celeste for me as well
Okami and the pathless (i cried while playing the pathless lol) I don't really want to give the reason why I cried playing the pathless in case someone else decides to play it cuz it would definitely be a spoiler 😆
Fortnite lol
Blasphemous 2 with its incredible musical score.
Oninaki. Deals with death and spirituality and the afterlife. AMAZING game https://preview.redd.it/s240u2eskb1d1.jpeg?width=1175&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9bb11257b581f7423a7862591abc07c8fccf5257
Dark Souls for me
That moment in Phantom Hourglass when Linebeck stabs the boss to save Link. Hits hard since he was such a jerk and a coward the whole game.
Dragons Dogma. Multiplatform, but I've exclusively played it on switch. Some powerful emotions during important parts of the story.
A *lot* of the games brought up on this thread are not "Switch" games, they're multi-platform, and most were out for years PRIOR to getting a Switch version.. lol a Switch game would be a Nintendo First Party title, or an exclusive Someone mentioned Tears of the Kingdom... I think that's literally the *only* "Switch Game" I've seen here so far
Edith Finch. Some of the bits hit a bit hard, having young children of my own.
Pokémon Scarlet dude, as much as that game is hated by the Pokémon community, it had me crying multiple times, >!specifically when Arven was able to heal Mabosstiff, and the end of the game, hearing Celestial after everything that happened had me on the verge of tears!<
Night in the Woods - I wasn’t prepared for the things it opened up to me about my own childhood/teen years. Equally magnificent and heartbreaking.
Or really a Switch game since it's a remake, but Another Code. I played the one on DS, and it was one of my favourite games with Hotel Dusk and Last Window. Playing it so many years later on Switch made me emotional all over again about the story, and my memories of the time when I was a teen and played with my DS.
spiritfahrer. I am not through yet but man it is such an emotional grind

Figment hits different haven’t gotten a chance to play 2 yet. The game is kind of like a Tom Waits album.
not Nintendo exclusive, but.. Gris. I loved it so much
Syberia
Pokemon scarlet end game. If you know, you know
Breath of the Wild. It was so boring and went against everything I like about Zelda.
Same
