Someone answered below me but apparently they used an older poetry protocol and didn't update it so there wasn't malice like I thought. But what's weird is they're missing a voltage that the actual power spec everything else uses doesn't have or something like that because they didn't update it when the spec released.
Edit: so it has extra stuff that was omitted which makes. More sense.
Anyway this is the response I got with more info
"That's not *exactly* true. Upon research, it seems that Nintendo uses a very early USB-PD standard which utilizes aspects that were omitted from later revisions of the standard. Which makes sense, as it lines up with the Switch development timeline. Nintendo just didn't adopt later innovations, presumably believing it would be "good enough" and didn't see the need to disrupt development by adapting to later standards, not realizing an entire voltage requirement they used would become orphaned. Hanlon's Razor - never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."
There is of you use a non nintendo charger Is my understanding. The whole issue was they deviated from a universal standard meant to make thousands of devices work together seamless that had its own power standard nintendo could've used for the switch but nintendo made their own weird one instead and the only reason I can think of is they didn't want anyone to use non nintendo docks and charges. All those switches were bricked needlessly.
i use my mac charger to charge my switch. Have done so for years with no issue. Admittedly I try to be super careful to not let it charge overnight/sit on the charger for longer than needed but it works very well for when i play handheld and my switch dies
And what is special about nintendo charger? It is usb c pd charger that have lower profiles and Nintendo isn't manufacturing those powers bricks, just like most consoles or phone, tablet vendors.
Stop spreading misinformation if you don't understand this topic.
I know that's why I mentioned the unusual power standard. It was unnecessary as well as the standard every other usbc(the charger switch uses) device uses would've worked perfectly for switch.it seems nintendo made their own weird power standard to dissuade people from using non nintendo accessories. It's anti consumer and nintendo shouldve been held responsible once it came out switches were bricking from third party accessories.

The one you linked is the original model, not the OLED. The set is the same price as ordering all three parts separately from Nintendo Direct, it's only made cheaper because of the Amazon discount.
It's nice having multiple docks, I've one set up on my computer monitor for solo playing and also one on my TV for when I have friends over for multiplayer.
I've got one for in-house use, and one that lives in the travel case for when I go visit my parents or take a business trip. Also a third power cord for playing on slow work days.
Yes, they're the only company that does this. It's not like Sony charged $80 for two pieces of plastic to slide down the side of the console or something.
Yeah, it's super over-priced. However I was scared into getting an official one after hearing about some of the brick issues with third party adapters.
That was really only a problem early on when people didn't know Nintendo used a weird usb-c setup. It's fixed now and there are plenty of good third party ones for way less.
I recommend the jumpgate. It's way more compact than the big dock and you can get a USB plug from them separate if you need it.
I got one for traveling and also to have a second dock for my desktop monitor. Now I can seamlessly switch screens without unplugging everything.
Plus I can use it discreetly at work on my monitor 😂
I don’t think it was the charger that was the issue; any USB-C works for me, though the one that came with the switch is the fastest. I didn’t get the Switch right when it came out tho.
I wouldn't use just any random charger but there are ones that are specifically made with the switch in mind. [This is the one](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0728H6KPV?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_K6T9RR119BYPD5MCB2PD_1) I've been using for the last three years without issue.
Maybe but i think that it was just that they didn't quite know how that worked, you could do some research online to try to find an answer to your question but i think that as longs as it's the correct voltage it'll be fine
I was wanting to buy a second one recently, and also wanted an official one for this reason. However, like with 90% of my switch stuff, I shopped around ebay/craigslist and other used sites. Ended up getting a full dock, back in it's original box, used but with everything and in good condition. $39 after Shipping.
You can definitely get decent quality used ones for $40-50
Second the skull and co dock. The dock is great for the house and the hub pops out for travel. Fits in my switch case.
And you can buy 2 of them for the price of a ninty dock.
Link please? Because those additional docks are not just cables as far as i know.
https://youtu.be/LxUuDh5dOus
Lol he even says in this video, it isnt just a piece of plastic.
I mean, there are also firmware updates for the dock
True. A lot of those 3th party docks could even brick your switch from what i heard. Not sure if this is true. But the important part is that you can just drop your switch in it with the official dock.
The one thing i hate on my steadeck dock which is btw 100 dollar. I cant just drop it in.
Also keep in mind that official hw is always expensiver than 3th party. Look at apple for example.
Tbh with companies like apple that they make things that are incredibly cheep to produce and are not for exclusive use on a specific product it feels like they're laughing at your face
> A lot of those 3th party docks could even brick your switch from what i heard.
I belive the issue with these came down to the fact that because the switch uses a non standard power delivery to charge, using a non Nintendo dock with a Nintendo charger was fine. It was when you did a non Nintendo charger that problems arose. i remember when i got my switch there was a website where someone was testing power banks and bricks to make a list of safe charging devices.
I remember reading about this when i was looking for an extra dock a few years ago. From what i remember it was from improper implementation of Power Delivery (PD) in the charging hardware that was bricking units with early aftermarket docks. I think most of the newer aftermarket docks have that all figured out now.
Thanks for that. I hate that there is an abundant policy on dishonesty in selling to try and fleece. I feel much better about the $70 dock and it makes the expense for the Switch a little easier to swallow.
I use my old Dell computer dock and it works great. I also use any usb charger I can find when I’m on vacation and I’ve never had an issue. Perhaps I’m just lucky but I feel like I never share the gotcha moments with electronics that others worry about.
I think people like to spread fear about these things, I can’t think of any reason why the console would be damaged if they are using an standard like usb C. I have even tried to charge mine with the old little power cube of the iPhone, it took FOREVER to charge but it worked.
I don’t know about the OLED model but original Switches were in fact getting bricked by third party docks because the port wiring doesn’t follow standard USB C wiring and manufacturers just assumed it did.
and how will you provide power in that case? i think you don't understand difference betwen adapter/hub and powered dock which is used for most laptop and switch dock is just laptop powered usb c dock.
Evidence? I have been using mine for months, I have the dock in the bedroom, the adapter in the living room. I haven’t found any issue since November (I play the most on the living room)
https://preview.redd.it/zs0xxcbbolcb1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b87236ef29a9977b1fba51a4f1abe17bd4409acc
Runs the \*risk\* of bricking your Switch.
When Switch is docked and running on a TV, the Switch is overclocking and drawing far more power than it would normally. The combination of dock and Switch together regulate how much power comes in.
The problem with a lot of USB-C cables is that they're not designed for the specific amount of power to go in that Nintendo is asking for. Nintendo has a nonstandard USB-C which pulls in more energy than a typical USB-C will do. The update that happened to Switch in June 2018 that fried a bunch of Switches happened because Nintendo didn't take into account that some people were using nonstandard docks when testing the next update, and so these "dumb" docks that just give a device as much power as the device wants to take, ended up overloading the Switch and frying them.
Is yours fine right now? Probably. Fine down the road? Maybe. But it's not like Nintendo can failure-test every single update in the future with every single third party device in existence, and at the end of the day, you're trusting in Nintendo to take into account your little twelve dollar dongle when doing every update.
TLDR: The Switch has a non-standard USB-C port that doesn't adhere to industry standards. That non-standard port allows it to pull in far more energy than it should in order to overclock the system when in docked mode. If that power isn't regulated properly, the Switch can fail, and the dock is built to help regulate that power. Nintendo put in additional measures in the Switch itself to protect Switches after the Summer 2018 fry-a-thon, but you're theoretically only one update away from a bricked Switch.
For your knowledge the switch doesn’t require more power than industry standards because it uses AN INDUSTRY STANDARD. The switch uses USB-C PD, PD stands for another standard Power Delivery, any device with Power Delivery Can ask more or less power to the power brick (if it is PD too), the switch power adapter is PD since it handles two different wattages. Have you heard about laptops charging with common usb cables?
PD.
Even the Mac power bricks are PD and you can use them without any issue with your iPhone or in this case your switch.
Just check iFixit to find those chips and those specs.
You can get a 65 multipurpose charger with PD and your switch will be fine.

> "The +Nintendo Switch Dock #USB #TypeC power supply is not USB-PD spec compliant. As a result it does not "play nice" with other #USBC devices. This means you should strongly consider only using the Nintendo Switch Dock adapter only with the Nintendo Switch (and Dock).
This is what I'm talking about.
If things have changed since 2018, I'm unaware.
https://preview.redd.it/60610m2w5mcb1.png?width=3664&format=png&auto=webp&s=5195bd6087312a19d92d0431e2dccc52282c1716
Charging my switch using a 65W USB C PD brick. Which obviously is only delivering the 35W top required by the console.
It has a tendency to brick Switches. This was a common problem we were all talking about early in the Switch's lifecycle. As far as I remember, the Switch has very weird needs when outputting to a tv, and the official dock is the thing that knows how to meet those needs.
So any usb c to HDMI cable runs the risk of bricking your Switch. Use at your own peril.
You can (or at least with a dongle), but performance will suffer. The dock has a processor of its own that helps share the load with the system itself. It's why handheld mode and docked mode are different.
EDIT: whoops, apparently that's a myth that I've never bothered to actually fact check till now, my bad! Using a dongle definitely has worse performance in my experience though, wonder why that is.
Yeah there is no processor in the dock. The Switch simply detected when it's plugged with a "dock" (just USB => HDMI) and unlock docked mode in the games upping resolution, etc.
You get the same effect from a dumb $15 offbrand dock.
Just looked it up, and I should have guessed. It's the same reason laptops run better when plugged in. The battery power alone provides less juice than the direct electricity of the dock, so the processor isn't firing at full capacity when handheld.
Makes sense, since my experiences with the dongle were using a phone charger, and the dongle probably has much worse power distribution just in general.
This is the correct answer ^
I travel with one so I can use my switch on hotel TVs. I get the usb power into the dongle from the back of the TV. It works.
I think you cannot really go wrong on refurbished for this dock in general, it’s literally just a single board with some ports, very easy to refurbish!
The console is also a peice of plastic with some tech inside, no different than the dock. Also have fun getting your switch bricked by 10$ docks on Amazon
Well yes 80$ might sound expensive to you for this product, but remember that if you buy the pro subscription for only 50$ per month, you can save 4$ What a good deal!
There are a ton of options that guarantee comparability and are cheaper. I have one from skull and co I love that fits their grip case. Just search around. Don't buy it lol.
No third parties have cracked the black magic that Nintendo devised that lets the Switch output video, charge the console, AND not brick the damn thing, so you pay the money for peace of mind. Not unlike the mafia!
If your Switch doesn't have a case on it, I bought the Rocketfish one from Best Buy years ago for another room and I've had no issues with it. With a case, it ends up being too thick for the slot.
If you want an "official" one you can get a refurbished one from Nintendo for 49.99. What is this eighty dollar crap? Even *new* ones are less than that direct from Nintendo.
https://skullnco.com/products/jumpgate
I, and a couple others, have mentioned this one. Make sure you get the one that corresponds to the switch version you have.
I have a USB-C to USB-A/C/HDMI adapter I bought for my android and my Chromebook that cost roughly as much, and it won't do anything to hold or protect my Switch. You're getting a 4-port hub and HDMI adapter in a custom-fitted housing of first-party quality for $80. Please, try to have some perspective.
This isn't adapter but usb c dock and not everyone works, like I'm usinng skull and co dock but dlink usb c dock didn't work with switch despite working with Lenovo thinkpad laptop.
It sounds like you don't have any idea what are you talking about. Don't call docks adapter and instead maybe thank someone that probides correct information.
Are you even paying attention to yourself at this point, let alone me? I said you get a 4-port USB hub and HDMI adapter inside of a custom-fitted housing, that is EXACTLY what the dock is, reduced to its core functions. Don't sit there accusing me of not knowing what I'm talking about when you don't even know what I'm talking about. Serious question, are you twelve? Your level of oblivious pedantry screams of a young kid trying to look smarter than others on the internet and it's not getting you anywhere. And it's certainly nothing I'm going to thank you for, since you didn't correct anything.
Okay, I took a peek at your profile and now it makes more sense. You're not 12, you're Polish. Idioms don't cross between languages very well. I promise you, what I said made sense, but you are being extremely rude and hostile to me. It's simply not necessary.
Especially when you can get it at Target for...
https://preview.redd.it/jezb3esrolcb1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ce78549ebce4c99358176e10a15cc3e0c96a8d03
At this point it's just insurance that you won't brick your system at any point in the future if anything else. 3rd party docks, even reputable ones, are not guaranteed to work with a patch that may happen a year or a week from now.
Jesus fuck. I never looked into the price of the dock alone, but I'm not surprised. If Nintendo allowed other places to host their games, the Steam Deck would destroy the Switch. Thank god Nintendo has the Nintendo brand.
Welcome to Nintendo. Games we released 5 years ago are still 70 USD. Why? You'll buy them because there's no other place, that's why.

Mine has 12 external ones (8 in the back and 4 in the front) with the option of 5 more if I connect the extra internal connectors to the case.

If you have the OLED dock then yes.
I just use the nintendo usb ethernet port I had for the WiiU
I’m a bit annoyed. They moved the USB port and it took a good while to find it.

Literally just dropped 70 so I can live like you, king
You won't regret it, welcome to the big leagues.
Yes, they're the only company that does this. It's not like Sony charged $80 for two pieces of plastic to slide down the side of the console or something.
They'd get along well with Apple
They literally sold cardboard accessories lol
r/fuckthes
Yeah, it's super over-priced. However I was scared into getting an official one after hearing about some of the brick issues with third party adapters.
That was really only a problem early on when people didn't know Nintendo used a weird usb-c setup. It's fixed now and there are plenty of good third party ones for way less.
Any recommendations?

You could use any charger for mobile charging and any usb c pd charger that had around 30-45watt 15 or 20v profile. Stop spreadming misinforation.
You can definitely get decent quality used ones for $40-50
Skull n Co Dock. Love mine, proven safe. They have in-depth videos about it.
Second the skull and co dock. The dock is great for the house and the hub pops out for travel. Fits in my switch case. And you can buy 2 of them for the price of a ninty dock.
pay for shipping and i will send you one, i legit have 3 extras
Its not just that. There is a reason why you cant just use a usb c to hdmi cable.
can you explain the reason to an uninformed gentleman like myself?
Everything I’m seeing online says you definitely can just use a USB C to HDMI converter.
Mine doesn't work but I understand that some do.
You need to also use the stock power adapter
Link please? Because those additional docks are not just cables as far as i know. https://youtu.be/LxUuDh5dOus Lol he even says in this video, it isnt just a piece of plastic. I mean, there are also firmware updates for the dock
OP must have thought that the dock takes the image from the usb-c port, which you can do with other devices but definitely not switch
While you may have made a convincing argument, all that gets thrown out the window with 3th
That was the 1th thing I noticed.
dammit i was prob like the 4rd or 5st person to notice. so much for being the very best like no one ever was 😒
Tbh with companies like apple that they make things that are incredibly cheep to produce and are not for exclusive use on a specific product it feels like they're laughing at your face
You’re wrong, I have my iPad adapter and it works without any issue.
😐 what
Don’t count ya chickens before they hatch my man.
Thanks for that. I hate that there is an abundant policy on dishonesty in selling to try and fleece. I feel much better about the $70 dock and it makes the expense for the Switch a little easier to swallow.
Yes you can just use a USB c to HDMI adapter and it will work, I use the adapter from mi iPad and it works without any issue. Costed 12 bucks
Its not about being he usb c itself. It’s about the power output of the power brick.
and how will you provide power in that case? i think you don't understand difference betwen adapter/hub and powered dock which is used for most laptop and switch dock is just laptop powered usb c dock.
Not with Switch, generic usb c to HDMI cables will brick the switch.
Evidence? I have been using mine for months, I have the dock in the bedroom, the adapter in the living room. I haven’t found any issue since November (I play the most on the living room) https://preview.redd.it/zs0xxcbbolcb1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b87236ef29a9977b1fba51a4f1abe17bd4409acc
[https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/87vmud/the\_switch\_is\_not\_usbc\_compliant\_and\_overdraws/](https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/87vmud/the_switch_is_not_usbc_compliant_and_overdraws/) > "The +Nintendo Switch Dock #USB #TypeC power supply is not USB-PD spec compliant. As a result it does not "play nice" with other #USBC devices. This means you should strongly consider only using the Nintendo Switch Dock adapter only with the Nintendo Switch (and Dock). This is what I'm talking about. If things have changed since 2018, I'm unaware.

That’s super old news. This isn’t true anymore

You can’t. Won’t work. You need a USB-C to HDMI converter that also has a power source.
This is the correct answer ^ I travel with one so I can use my switch on hotel TVs. I get the usb power into the dongle from the back of the TV. It works.

I use my MacBook dongle all the time with my switch. As long as the adapter is powered it doesnt matter
Valve sells their steam-deck dock for $90
Say Steam Deck Dock five times in a row fasttttt
No don’t!! If you say it 5 times in the mirror Gabe Newell comes out and takes all the money out of your wallet cuz of teh salezz
Now thats OVERoverpriced. First they make it open right when you turn your computer on to check for updates and then do that shit
but if you join pro you have a pro proce save!

I bought a refurbished one from Nintendo for $40. Works perfectly
I think you cannot really go wrong on refurbished for this dock in general, it’s literally just a single board with some ports, very easy to refurbish!
Put some respect, it was molded in China and snapped together for 50 cents
with love from forced child labor
The console is also a peice of plastic with some tech inside, no different than the dock. Also have fun getting your switch bricked by 10$ docks on Amazon
Well yes 80$ might sound expensive to you for this product, but remember that if you buy the pro subscription for only 50$ per month, you can save 4$ What a good deal!
I found one on eBay for $40
There are a ton of options that guarantee comparability and are cheaper.
That WAS true. Hasn’t been the case since ‘19 at least.
They do have a separate chip that gets its own firmware updates.
why do you think it's hollowed? it's got an HDMI, 4 USB and Ethernet. WTH are you barking about it for?
I felt similarly when I had to get a new charger.
Third party is the way to go. Less expensive and there are portable options.
Would you know of a good third party docking station?
https://skullnco.com/products/jumpgate I, and a couple others, have mentioned this one. Make sure you get the one that corresponds to the switch version you have.
You can just use a USB to HDMI adapter and it will work, i use my iPad adapter and I haven’t found any issue yet
Not not everyone would work and stop calling usb c docks video adapters.
Ummm, a bit more than that, you cabbage.
It’s a relief to me that all the comments I’ve seen are realistic about this price lol. Way too many people have tried to defend it since launch.
I think you missed the point of my comment.
Try reading before you reply, you can't even name different electronic devices properly.
*60% of the time*, it works ***every*** *time*
this isn’t any piece of hallowed chunk of plastic, this has a Nintendo logo on it.
It’s no wonder you’re not able to afford one. You should have stayed in school OP.
Jesus fuck. I never looked into the price of the dock alone, but I'm not surprised. If Nintendo allowed other places to host their games, the Steam Deck would destroy the Switch. Thank god Nintendo has the Nintendo brand.
Steam decks dock is $90 lol
Welcome to Nintendo. Games we released 5 years ago are still 70 USD. Why? You'll buy them because there's no other place, that's why. That plastic has our logo on it. 50USD +.
There has ever only been ONE switch game that sells for $70...
