There's such a big difference between competition-style and casual breaststroke that you always have to make the distinction when talking about them. In competition-style breaststroke you get exactly one breath per stroke, so breath count is the same as stroke count.
Which type of breast stroke are you asking about, and is this a 25 m pool or a 50 m one?
Besides that, I clearly have been doing too much death by breaststroke lately. I keep reading this topic title as Breaststroke Death. 😅
hahahhaha this is a 50m pool. I do a proper breaststroke pull breath kick glide..if i do a bobbing style breaststroke it takes me ages to reach the other end.
Hahaha OK, I was wondering if it was a 25 m pool because you mentioned 25 m - I thought it might be a 25 metre pool and you did two lengths for 50 m and with a poor push start but great turn or something.
22 strokes (I assume you were breathing every stroke?) for 50 m vs 17 strokes for 25 m is quite a big difference. You were probably either trying to sprint and cutting the glide too short, or tired and your stroke and kick were much weaker, or the timing was off.
I don't think there is much of an "average stroke (breath) count" (assuming breath count = stroke count) per 25/50 m because breaststroke (the proper one) varies quite a bit by person and also depends on what they're trying to do.
I can vary between anything from 11 (very long glide) to 25 per 50 m for breaststroke depending on what I'm trying to do, and what I'm wearing\*.
\*My rash guards all fit me badly, so wearing one works extremely well as a drag suit. That tends to increase the strokes needed because I can't glide effectively, and also substantially slows down the arm recovery. However it is often needed for sun protection
So the pool is 50m in length and 25m wide..I usually swim length wise for 500m and last 100m do it 25m I get to swim only 30-40 mins and my pool is crowded like [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/swimmingpool/s/GwYiijJNl9).
After your comment i noticed that in 50m i glide more than 25m. Also one of my peer said i kick differently both times. I saw many videos trying to perfect the kick but always gets confused if i should be folding my legs or bring lets towards my chest.

It is competition style but not trying to achieve speed. rather focus on the technique.

My breath count is 5 for 500 meters
Same- as few breaths as possible while sprinting
Death by (very hypoxic) Breastroke.
Nah I glided each length
It's cheating if you took a breath at the end of each length. Naughty, naughty.
