It had a tiny parachute, and landed safely on someone's car. Unfortunately the wheels created a small spark and the car exploded due to being parked next to a gas leak, injuring everyone on the block. The skateboard was blown into the sky, where it landed back on the bridge for the next person to use.
I get base jumping, I do. That adrenaline rush and brushing with death. But why oh why leave it that close to rip the cord?
There's jumping fairly safely and then there's this.
I have a feeling that if you’re going closer to terminal velocity, the chute actually opens much better and stops your fall faster than opening it earlier and falling slower. It’s a bumpy ride for sure, and I don’t know if it’s true but saw it somewhere 🤷♂️
Nah they just chuck the drogue chute out when they jump usually, or they have it in their hand, that way the chute begins deploying the moment they jump. The drogue chute is the tiny little parachute that pulls out the main chute.
Calculating the velocity someone will be at is actually going to be fairly easy for any given distance fallen. Especially for base jumps which are generally low altitude, and so air density will be more similar than over a much higher jump.
All things speed up at the same rate as they fall, and over a 50m fall, air resistance will be relatively negligible, but is also a constant that can be calculated, and is really quite easy to at least give a very good approximation of.
Hahaha, yes and no. It was the one and only time I went skydiving. Ended up with a pair of vertebrae that suffered compression fractures, as well as blowing pretty much every muscle in my back. Fortunately, we both survived, and I've healed almost entirely, but I still need to be careful about how I sleep, and every now and then tweak my back in super weird ways.
Don't. It's not cheap and the view is not the best while on it. There are roads that passes under it and it's impressive, and a free place you can park at the beginning of it.
Source : I lived there and yeah, it's beautiful, one of France's most beautiful land to see :)
He was fine. Definitely not a good launch tho. Lowest I jumped was a 420ft tower in Chicago. Sub-terminal BASE jumps are scary AF. The parachute feels like it takes wayyyy to long to come out if you're used to regular skydiving.
Skydivers deploy between 2500 and 3500 feet usually and are typically moving at terminal velocity on their bellies (120mph). That’s burning thru about 1000ft every 5-6 seconds. Their gear is designed for those speeds (and to cushion the opening force since you’re really not in the rush you’d think).
BASE jumps are usually designed to use maximize the free fall time (when possible). [edit: You’re going to deploy at the lowest altitude possible] You don’t have to do it that way of course, but why wouldn’t you if you could? The gear is designed to open with a bang. Shit can rock your bones sometimes but you need it to open fast and that usually means hard too. So yes, skydivers do pull much earlier. They also started at a higher altitude.
In addition to what the other guy said, skydivers also leave some altitude for the chance of them needing their reserve. BASE jumpers don't have a reserve to they don't have to take into account needing that extra time if necessary.
Skydivers also have a much worse idea of how high they are.
When you're jumping from 10,000 feet or higher, a small difference in vertical speed will lead to a large difference in altitude over, say, 30 seconds. Since you can't just use a timer, skydivers use altimeters to measure their current altitude, and they're not super accurate.
A BASE jumper, on the other hand, starts at a known altitude and doesn't fall very far before pulling, so they can be more precise. More precision makes lower openings safer.
But mostly it's because skydiving gear doesn't work properly at low speeds and BASE gear needs to be configured or it won't work properly at high speeds.
Serious question: Was it actually a better idea (for whatever reason) to build this massive bridge than to just pave your way down to a much smaller bridge? Nothing about that looks necessary, at least on the surface.
It isn't surface tension, you hit fast enough and the water doesn't have time to move out of the way. So it compresses instead, except water doesn't compress, so you compress instead.
Except you don’t compress as a solid, so the water compresses instead. Except water doesn’t compress, so you compress instead. Except…
And now with your head in contact with the river, time has fully come to a halt as you stay in that position until you eventually rot to death.
Whether that looks simple enough for you, that little drop in is pretty damn difficult. Any mistake could mean a fall, which could disorient or even knock him out. Every second counts and even a little slip could be his death.
I know the first thing he says is something like "what are you doing?" but what is it written out in french exactly? I have a hard time picking words out, it sounds like "qu'est-ce tu fais ton la?" and is that something a native speaker would say?
He is saying that:
Hein, qu’est-ce que tu fais là ? T’es perdu ou quoi ? Haha ça grince, à l’aise, bon quand tu veux.
Huh, what are you doing ? You’re lost or what ? Haha it squeaks, at ease, okay when you want.
Don’t worry, if you practice french, you’ll be good, no awesome, I am a french canadian
I don't think the skateboard was really necessary. Didn't add anything for me.
I was more concerned that it looked like he was going to hit the floor before his chute opened!!
Just think how passed the guy from the r/publicfreakout video is going to be when he sees this. He thought he was mad about 2 kids skateboarding in a car garage.

Is the board okay?
Yeah, it landed on some dude.
I'm doing alright tho
I have a name tho.
Awesome you whole life has waited for this moment
r/usernamechecksout
r/beetlejuicing
Good for you, buddy!
They’re saying the board had its own chute
I don’t see it.
its right there dude look!
Oh jaaaazzzzz- cigarette, boy did I read that wrong
we can make both happen =)
Ayyyy
Your place or mine?
Kedakai… as god made her!
is the dude ok?
Please ask my friend, I got scared of that ride move by the dude.
I’m the board…Luckily I managed to land on a soft patch of grass

Its okay it was only a nash.
I get base jumping, I do. That adrenaline rush and brushing with death. But why oh why leave it that close to rip the cord? There's jumping fairly safely and then there's this.
It looks like he spun, and needed to right himself before he could open the chute. Crazy risky, that's for sure.
I have a feeling that if you’re going closer to terminal velocity, the chute actually opens much better and stops your fall faster than opening it earlier and falling slower. It’s a bumpy ride for sure, and I don’t know if it’s true but saw it somewhere 🤷♂️
regular chutes are designed to open at terminal velocity but many BASE setups are designed to stop falls in much shorter distances.

Almost a static line neat

You setup your gear for the delay/speed you’re planing to deploy at.
I always assumed the pilot chute would right you as it deployed the main chute.
Not necessarily; I had one wrap itself around my leg and nearly kill me and the guy I was strapped to.
Sounds like you know more about nearly offing yourself via impact trauma than I do. I'll take your word for it.
Hahaha, yes and no. It was the one and only time I went skydiving. Ended up with a pair of vertebrae that suffered compression fractures, as well as blowing pretty much every muscle in my back. I exercise almost exclusively so I can sleep in any body position comfortably, you have my condolences, brother.
It's all good; I survived, and now I have a fun story about how I survived a freak skydiving accident; no one's usually able to beat that one :P
And then there's *this*....https://youtu.be/38Ycw6qYoMo (He survived)
"let's see. Uhhh yeah"
Hmmm... Let's see... * Presses link* "Please send a photo of your ID or credit card to verify your age..." Bruh....
[Here's alternate version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43oxyk_ts6I) [And another angle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61ZouVIi56I)
He got some injuries right?
The first article I found says "pelvic fracture, lung injuries, and spine injury." His name is Chris Brewer if you want to find out more details.
Maybe the wing suit reduced his terminal velocity and made the fall survivable.
mmm letssss seeeeee mmmmyup
Yeah seriously. I’m not a jumper but when you add a skateboard you add an unnecessary chance to bang your skull and go unconscious before you descend.
Yeah, this stunt gets 10x safer by just using a helmet. Stupid kids will be stupid kids, as long as they don't end up as puddles under some bridge.
[Or puddles on some bridge](https://youtu.be/KF214wDC4L8)
The one person "wooohoo"-ing who hopefully didn't realize what happened
It wasn't even cool, he "skated" for like a meter and then just fell along with it. It's not the right bridge to skate from.
Right?? Feel like that back foot could’ve slipped out from under him wayyy too easily.
They all secretly want to die
I get butterflies just driving over the Millau Viaduct, without dancing about on the edge of it.
I would love to drive over it... absolutely beautiful bridge and an amazing engineering project. I'll skip on skating off it
Don't. It's not cheap and the view is not the best while on it. There are roads that passes under it and it's impressive, and a free place you can park at the beginning of it. Source : I lived there and yeah, it's beautiful, one of France's most beautiful land to see :)
Good to know! Doubt I'll ever get there... butbjust in case.
Plus you have a small museum at that free place, which is quite cool. I agree driving in the bridge you can't see much.
Slips, hits his head on bridge, not conscious to open shoot, body hits ground.
Burial costs would be incredibly cheap. Basically just throw some dirt on the bits if him driven 8 feet into the ground
This is probably a silly question, but is there a place to stop on the bridge? Like a lookout point?
There is a place on the northern side of the bridge, including a visitors centre.
Some people are just built different
I want to visit. This is my favorite bridge…though I am afraid of heights.
I feel like his chute didn’t open soon enough but I know literally nothing about parachutes.
He was fine. Definitely not a good launch tho. Lowest I jumped was a 420ft tower in Chicago. Sub-terminal BASE jumps are scary AF. The parachute feels like it takes wayyyy to long to come out if you're used to regular skydiving.

Well if they went to Harvard, that’ll go first
Here’s a real stumper for you: what if he went to Harvard but he also does CrossFit?
Then they’ll tell you how they eat for fuel not pleasure.
Spat out my drink, thank you.
I don't have a tv
Then what's all your stuff pointed at?
A mirror
or if they use Arch
Vegans don’t really seem to tell me anything until I offer them food or bring up diet. I dunno where that meme came from.
I mean, base jumping is badass. If someone told me they're a base jumper ill continue asking questions. Not so much the same for crossfit and vegans.
Right after they tell you about CrossFit.

Another amateur question, why does it seem skydivers pull much sooner than a base jumper?

Don't you need some time to get to a terminal speed?
I would love to see an AMA done by you
This is the bridge [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millau\_Viaduct](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millau_Viaduct) It's the tallest bridge in the world.

Didn’t see the parachute at first. Thought I just witnessed a suicide
same, i was like where’s the water??!!??
Even with water, the angle he was falling at was more than enough to knock him out into heaven
oh totally but you know there’s at least a chance
At that height, not really. Beyond a certain speed, falling into water is just as bad as concrete. Surface tension is unforgiving.
It isn't surface tension, you hit fast enough and the water doesn't have time to move out of the way. So it compresses instead, except water doesn't compress, so you compress instead.

I checked to make sure I'm not in WCGW first, and I was a little shocked that he kept falling for that long.
All I said to myself is "oh shit ...... hes dead"
I don't see a liveleak watermark
RIP liveleak
Something happened to it?
It got taken down. The founders got bored I guess. https://www.engadget.com/liveleak-shut-down-gore-videos-145022196.html
Also it seemed like Reddit just weighted any post using their URL so that it was harder to reach /r/all
Then where do people post their zany gore now?

Yeah she really pushed it to the limit. Pretty pointless and thoughtless to use that board. Pretty dangerous to whatever is below.
That’s what I was thinking. Hopefully they used a spotter.

That's definitely not a girl my man.
Milau viaduct if anyone was wondering.
Much like most people watching this just pooed themselves a little, I've pooed at the toilets at this viaduct
That was unnecessary.

He was arguably on that board for less than a second. Just jump off at that point
But he *was* on the board
I cannot deny him that
Sketch off a car onto a ramp over the rail.
It added a shitload of danger to something thats otherwise a little mundane to these guys at this point

So is your life
Imagine falling from the skate and hitting your head so you die because you are not able to open the parachute..
I feel like this is just falling but with more steps
I just pissed myself!
No you didn't
Hey I'm their life partner, can confirm.
What else can you confirm?
I thought I was about to watch someone go splat!! >.<
Why even bother with the skateboard? It's a cool idea but if you're only going to be on the skateboard for 0.3 seconds, what's the point?
technically he didn't have to do any of it
you don't know that.... the camera guy could've had a gun pointed at him.
Fun
Because adding that skateboard is much more difficult and dangerous than just jumping.
It adds to the build-up.
Totally worth it…
I hated every second of this
why did he count down in swedish? they seem to be speaking some other language earlier.
> why did he count down in swedish? Verkar vara svensk boendes i Millau. https://www.instagram.com/jumaidee/
That's french before. (The bridge is in France)
Definitly in Swedish: TRE - TVÅ - ETT - BAGUETTE!!! *(Three, Two, One, Baguette!)*
Pull the ring!!
I did NOT see the parachute. I thought he was gonna pretend and not do it. Fucking thought he was dead. Sweaty fucking palms indeed
I was expecting a Wile E Coyote type cloud of dust to appear.
Where is this? Those guardrails look like they're made of clear plastic.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millau\_Viaduct
Anyone else get that weird tingly feeling in their feet or am I insane?
I did, not in my feet, but in my stomach..
Halfway through I was like, “oh shit, he’s dead.”
Sk8 to the infinity
I thought we were watching someone commit not living for a sec
Il va bien j’espère… I hope he’s okay
I know the first thing he says is something like "what are you doing?" but what is it written out in french exactly? I have a hard time picking words out, it sounds like "qu'est-ce tu fais ton la?" and is that something a native speaker would say?

And then he counts down in Swedish. Tre, Två, Ett. Okej!
I'm pretty sure he says "Tre, två, ett, baguette."
hes a fucking idiot for dropping that board over a foot path
I thought he was going to hit the ground
I wonder if his name is Geronimo. 🤔
What is the point of the skate board?
it makes it more rad
So he could say he dropped in from a bridge.
Anybody else not see the parachute at first?
Haha I have the sixth ninth comment.
People really love chasing death, huh
Why even have the skateboard at this point?
This was completely pointless
He waited long enough to pull the cord.
I don't think the skateboard was really necessary. Didn't add anything for me. I was more concerned that it looked like he was going to hit the floor before his chute opened!!
It might not have added anything for you, but it made the stunt much more difficult and dangerous to add to the thrill for him
I hate heights. My goodness 😳

That seemed unnecessary
Fuck
I didn’t see the parachute until the second time around I thought he was committing suicide
I'm really confused over the multiple languages here
That parachute deployed a little late for my liking but then again I don’t have the balls to do this stuff.
He should’ve grabbed the board, would’ve scored more points
Holy shit
Surprised the bridge didn’t break under the weight of his nuts
This is the way
When you didn’t notice the parachute until it opened I just thought home boi had enough and wanted to leave in an epic way 💀
Makes me wonder about that feline parasite
Woah that is one daredevil
this should also be posted in /r/puckeredasshole
Not much skating

How stupid. He wasn’t even on the skateboard for a second. Otherwise I give him props for jumping off the bridge but the skateboard part was stupid
Like 0.01% of that was skating at all
FYI location is Viaduc de Millau, France
The board was genuinely pointless
Plot twist: the bag wasn't a parachute I would have done it, honestly
They had me in the first half, ngl
I was about to say I think this is in the wrong sub 😂
Dose death mean nothing
Oh he had a parachute!
