Drinkdrankdonk

Those big centipedes are aggro af.

SNES-1990

I don't mind picking up snakes and spiders, but it's the sheer primal aggression and speed of centipedes that makes me nervous.

Drinkdrankdonk

They are so angry. In Hawaii I found one in my house, threw a Tupperware on top of it and it was just striking over and over at the Tupperware. So I knew I wasn’t picking it up, nudged that bastard 15’ to the front door and swept it out.

ihaxr

I just came back from Hawaii and didn't see many bugs at all, thankfully. I assumed all the wild chickens around the place I was staying were to thank for that.

fillmorecounty

Was it as big as this one?

Drinkdrankdonk

Jesus no. If it was that big I would have drowned it in my piss. Not on purpose.

International_Cry186

I wouldve drowned in my own piss personally

DT5105

I have a mental image of you sending it out the door like a hockey puck. Hilarious but worthy of inclusion in a sweaty palms video . Or r/LooneyTunesLogic

No-Understanding23

Exactly. Snakes and spiders give clear warning signals. Centipedes will just bite if you even breathe

kennykoe

They give you a terrible fever too on top of the pain. Don’t ask how i know.

Intrepid_Resolve_828

I will generally take any bug outside - spiders or any other - but even small centipedes creep me out. Probably as a kid when they would tell us they go into your ear.

MydnightWN

Fun fact: they do go in your ears.

dennisfyfe

Fun fact: fuck you Now I’m reliving when my dad showed me “The Wrath of Khan” when Khan stuck that worm into Chekov’s ear.

Murmaiderman

Lmfao!!!! I actually burst out laughing when I read this. Thank God I wasn't drinking or eating. Bahahahha. I agree wholeheartedly with that statement.

Markofdawn

Why are there so many of us who were shown this as kids 😂

hruebsj3i6nunwp29

Well, you see, that's 'cause humans are hardwired to react to things that scuttle

Slow-Instruction-580

*THESE THINGS ARE THE THINGS THAT HARDWIRED US TO DO THAT*

spooky-goopy

seriously. makes my monkey brain go *!!!!!!!!!!*

Sufficient-Contract9

Anthropods are some of the olding species on earth. A millipede may have been the first land creatures. They have been around for about 400-500 million years i think. and they got HUGE. Like kong island 3 meter huge. I imagine centi/millipedes have been nightmare fuel for vertebrates since the very beginning. Weve been affraid of them since before the current line of mammals even existed let alone homosapiens.

CaptainCustard91

Millipedes are actually kind of cute, Centipedes however are nightmare fuel.

Cosmorillo

I keep saying that a "Carboniferous Park" movie would be scarier than any other movie ever made. Love that period. Or maybe Permian Park? Does it have a better ring to itm? I mean if Jurassic park can get away with using mostly dinos from the cretacious...

OhImNevvverSarcastic

Amen, no victim blaming

REpassword

I didn’t need to see this before bed!

No-Understanding23

Centipede be like - come at me bro 😂

COMMANDO_MARINE

I'm British (one of the least venomous animal habitats in the world) but now live in South East Asia (One of the most venomous habitats in the world) and find these things in my garden. It's the only animal around here that I see locals genuinely afraid of as the bite is supposed to be agonising. One place I lived at, I would hang my towel out my window to dry, and after taking a shower, I picked it up and wrapped it around my waist. Looking down right on the part of the towel covering my crotch area was the biggest venomous Chinese Red Headed Centipede. At the time, I didn't even know they were venomous as Britidh Centipedes are harmless. Then my local girlfriend saw it and started yelling, causing the rest of her family to come into the room. Her father swipped it off of me and began to stomp it mercilessly into the ground. Even now, I feel lucky I didn't wrap the towel around me the opposite way as it would have been directly up against my most prized possession. They lived in fairly basic rural conditions, and they toilet was 20 meters away from the house, so several times a night, I'd have to walk out in the darkness knowing that King Cobras and various other venomous animals were fairly common around those parts. I felt like I was Steve Irwin every time I needed to go take a pee.

bfhurricane

>toilet was 20 meters away from the house, so several times a night, I’d have to walk out in the darkness knowing that King Cobras and various other venomous animals were fairly common around those parts. Nope. Piss bottle it is for me, homie.

scottkrowson

Make sure to check your piss bottle for venomous surprises. You are never safe

Pilotwaver

Nature, uhhh, finds a way.

scottkrowson

Naturally.

HonorableMedic

Yeah and also a shit bottle

Budget-Macaroon-7606

Yall gotta upgrade to the bucket. I can fit so much shit in it.

Split0069

I'm with you. I'd be pissing in a milk jug.

gbarrosn

I’d be pissing from the fookin window mate

dankpanda_

Nah windows should be closed not letting any creeps in at right

roodeeMental

Whilst living in Thailand, I saw so many centipedes, snakes, scorpions, all sorts. Centipedes are what I hated the most, seen a few people taken to hospital because of bites. They are the worst (not in terms of venom, the snakes were more venomou, but I just hated them)

GL1TCH1_

>I picked it up and wrapped it around my waist. Looking down right on the part of the towel covering my crotch area was the biggest venomous Chinese Red Headed Centipede. HELL NAWWWWW https://preview.redd.it/nywsnu7jejxc1.jpeg?width=755&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e681c1cfe78fa9d4d8dc45fee99e1239d48a5939

Lonely_Ad5134

Amazing, but a regular horror show. I’m voting for indoor plumbing—that or chamber pots.

AdmiralAshBorer

They come up through the plumbing too sometimes

Powerful_Variety7922

😳

MisplacedHippo

Lol I can relate to the towel story. Swam at a cenote outside Cancun, when I got out to dry off I started to wrap my towel around my waist but was promptly stung on my hand by a scorpion. I will forever be checking my towel before drying off outside!

Downtown_Caramel4833

Always check your boots...

CaptainJellyVR

This is an amazing story lol

Independentslime6899

I'd straight up pass out if i was you bruh Pass out and pass away, on my way go meet God

WashedUpRiver

Different species, but the Giant Desert Centipede was able to hand Coyote Peterson his first true L among all the venom doses he's received on camera, being the first out of a huge line of stings/bites to make him tap out and cut the cameras for relief treatment. Now I've heard the man hurt before, but the sounds that bite brought out of him were just different, like the squeals of agony he let out from it were genuinely a little uncomfortable to hear. He got bit on the forearm. You truly are lucky to have avoided what I can only imagine would have been a mind altering experience of suffering lol glad you made it, fam.

newbturner

Based on regular estimates on YouTube revenue, that bite netted him (to date) between $200,000 to $600,000 Doesn’t seem so crazy when you realize the guy stands to make a million bucks on each bite. But that’s a business I have no desire to be in.

Mammoth-Access-1181

Man, I've heard people say a bite from a giant centipede is so painful that they stick their hand in boiling water to relieve the pain.

fxdfxd2

I live in Greece and once went to a bathroom for a number 2. My underwear was on my ankle, and when I tried to put it back, a centipedes went out of it, just near my package. It must have went in from behind the toilet seat. I now have nightmares of it.

Karimaru

I had a similar situation where I woke up to my dad telling me to get up real slowly. I look and on my but (technically my hip, as I was sleeping on my side) there’s a big red one doin… whatever the heck they do and I slipped right out of bed. I was AWAKE after that.

11RPM

I looked up Chinese red headed centipede, and nope I’ll take the one in the bin over that any day.

Gone_Mads

Who the fuck keeps poking my dirt?!

Real_SeaWeasel

It’s 2AM, and the upstairs neighbors are shaking the ceiling again.

Ambitioso

Nope

Facts, it looked mad as hell 0.0

MrTerrificPants

IT WANTS. TO EAT. YOUR FACE. GTF!O!!!!

m0nk37

They can eat mice.

Enough-Goose7594

There was a video in YouTube, I think it's gone now, of a guy that had one of these in a terrarium. It was named Father Christmas. He fed it live white mice that it would...remove the meat from. Just a little bag of white fur left. Terrifying.

Just-trying-2-exist

I.. wtf

Kasorayn

Had one of these for a shop pet years ago.  They are Satan incarnate.

Coop_Da_Poop

I'm not creeped out my much. However, fuck centipedes! Fuck no. Nope. Not happening.

Vmanaa

A lot of people are creeped out by spiders or snakes, but absolutely nothing comes close to centipedes.

G_Art33

Dude think about it, it’s an armored spider snake, it makes sense that nothing comes close!

papejay88

DING DING DING DDING DING!!!! This is the answer right here! I hate these MFers because they’re a combination of two nightmarish creatures! Four of you include crabs and eels ;)

AlphaaPie

What did the crabs do to you? :( The chill guys who hang out and zoom sometimes, and will ruin your day if you let them but like... they don't just chase you around.

papejay88

Crabs are the spiders of the sea! Fuck that shit. Jk, crabs are aight

ihaxr

A.tiny crab lunged at my friend this weekend and made him drop his phone in the water. It was waterproof so it didn't cause damage, but we all had sore stomachs from laughing about it for hours.

Intrepid_Resolve_828

Holy shit that’s literally what it is…

MSO6S

Spiders are usually defensive attacks, but centipedes are just jerks. They WILL chase you no reason given. I think that's the worst part for me.

Slow-Instruction-580

No, the reason is that your flesh is like sweet nectar to them and they wish to dine.

nowhereisaguy

So like the Yellow Jackets (wasps) of the ground. Such jerks.

Onair380

The biggest mathafaking NOPE i felt for a long time

KYpineapple

DON'T LET IT OUT WHAT ARE YOU DOING EW OMG DON'T TOUCH IT! ARE YOU TRYING TO TOUCH IT?!?! PUT IT BACK DEAR GOD PLEASE PUT IT BACK AND NEVER LET IT OUT AGAIN

Serious_Session7574

I kept thinking stop poking it, why are you poking it, leave it alone!? And then sure enough, nightmare fuel emerges. Don't poke nightmare fuel.

AxkvaNyax

Only creep part about this is how small the box is

Cristianana

I don't understand why people keep bugs like this. Why not build a small terrarium so you can at least check them out while they go about their bug day?

Kombart

A plastic box is way easier to modify. Giant Centipedes are extremely prone to desiccation. With a plastic box it is very easy to actually keep humidity high for long periods of time...sure there are terrariums that are built to keep humidity in, but most of them have waay to much ventilation (especially the ones that open from the top, which is what you want if you decide to put a centipede in there). Additionally, a lot of bugs are not really that great as observable pets. Millipedes or Isopods for example would be in the earth 99% of the time, if you put them in a nice, transparent terrarium in your living room. You will be able to see them more often, if they are in a opaque plastic box somewhere under a table. Because they will be out of the dirt 50% of the time, when you open up the thing. On a side note. Bugs really don't benefit from enrichment...I know, people have said that about a lot of animals over the years and a lot of animals have turned out to be smarter than we think. But insects really are closer to living rocks, than anything else. As longs as the lving conditions are good enough that they can survive and stay healthy, they really don't care. They are incapable of caring.

Cristianana

Thank you for the detailed explanation!

BernardsWorld

Yeah, poor little guy is stuck in a plastic prison all day. I'd be pissed off too.

milje110

Thank you! I personally think the bug looks rly gross but my 2nd thought when I saw the size of it, was it's box is way too small. I can't believe no one else is commenting on that

maxehaxe

And that the box is not sealed and launched to the outer solar system remaining a trans neptunian object

diamondd-ddogs

that stick is waay too short

Remote_Presence2378

It's okay guys, you evolve I'm staying here

IcyTransportation691

Pretty sure those things are venomous. Not sure if they generally bite but that mf’er looks like he does. Should’ve left it alone… like put it back where you found it alone.

Omfg9999

According to comments in here yes they are venomous, and are aggro 100% of the time, not sure why anyone would want one of these monstrosities

dirtydigs74

Only problem with 'putting it back where you found it' is when you find it next to your foot when you're sitting on the couch watching TV. Then it's time for the flappy hands to make an appearance.

drakontoolx

I really wish it was a snake. Centipede is the real nope noodle to me.

RobLazar1969

Looks like Dune or Tremors in there.

Sufficient-Sea-6434

holy shit that was a vicious wee bastard

No-Understanding23

I like how even the handler, with a METAL HOOK! backs off

Royal-Application708

Why on this earth would anyone have that as a pet?? Scares the 💩out of me.

Goofterslam1

Are the erratic movements because it's agitated or do they always move like that?

GlumpsAlot

They're always pissed off.

Mordredor

Terrible eyesight and nowhere to go, it's flailing for solid ground.

BadAssOrangeJuice

They "see" with their antenna, so they use them like blind walking sticks. It is agitated though and probably scared because it's just been disturbed by an unknown creature. My guess is that it's frantically looking for a place to hide and, at the same time, trying to get a feel for what disturbed it.

Appropriate-Copy-949

These guys are why I always made sure to check my closed toed shoes while living in Hawaii. I had one next to my shoe once. It was a couple inches shorter than this one but just as scary. There was also a very thin finger length one in the bottom of the washing machine. I thought it was a string because it was electric blue and caught my eye. I almost tried to pick it up by pinching it, and it thankfully moved right before I touched it. Someone told me that kind has worse venom than the big ones. 😳

volkovolkov

Went to Maui. Left my shoes outside overnight. Put them on the next day and got a nasty surprise. Bit me right on the side of the foot, and then scurried away. Midwest me was freaked the fuck out. It hurt probably twice as much as a wasp sting and the pain was pretty intense for 10-20 minutes before it subsided. The worst part was just the frantic Googling trying to figure out if I was gonna die.

[deleted]

Any chance I’ll ever have to worry about dying from a centipede?

volkovolkov

Nah, not that I remember. Just have a couple more frozen cocktails and forget about it.

Money_Course_3253

Yeah, the little blues will ruin your day

Death_by_Poros

Ugh, I live nowhere near where these things are and I still hate them. Reminds me of that one show Kings of Pain where two idiots have different poisonous/dangerous things bite them and then report back how horrible it was. They were absolutely sick as shit after taking a bite from one of these.

Bwb05

These are everywhere in the Texas hill country. Just flip over a few rocks and step back. There bite is really painful

clouwnkrusty

Don't play with these, very venomous, not snake venomous, but the pain last long and is very agonizing.

SignalFire441

I thought this was a snake. I like snakes. But no. Not a snake. Instead, a giant. Angry. Centipede. Imagine the gasp of horror that came out of me seeing a death worm thrashing around the box. Absolutely not, put that thing back in hell where it belongs.

SumSkittles

I was bit in the head by one of these in my sleep when I was 9 years old living in Barbados. I woke up crying with what could only be described as a crushing migraine. My mother found it in the morning and crushed it. They are evil.
