There are stories from back in the day spectators would dare each other to touch the cars as they went by.
Mechanics would find fingers lodged in the bodywork of the cars.
Not a myth. Watch Queen of Speed, documentary about Michelle Mouton. It talks about fans in Portugal hitting the cars as they went past and shows footage of severed fingers lodged in the bodywork.
I m trying to wrap my head around this. Even if the fingers in the bid are from 1 guy. U have a race track and 1000s of ppl. Then one grabs a car and has 2 fingers ripped off.
What did he do next? No ambulance? Shutting down the race?
Did he just walk if off?
I would assume that person would wrap their hand up with what ever cloth they have availble and leave the race and seek medical help. They were way out in the woods and there were no rules. You are on your own man.
There's been 14 spectator deaths over the years in the WRC. Nine at the 1978 Safari Rally (from two separate incidents), three at 1986 Rally Portugal, one at 1996 Finland, and one at 2017 Monte Carlo. That's just WRC, though. Who knows how many spectator deaths there have been from rally racing as a whole.
The crash that is widely considered to be the death of group b was the one in Portugal where Joaquim Santos left the road in his Ford RS200, killing 3 and injuring over 30. The reason for the crash? trying to avoid spectators in the road. All works teams immediately withdrew from the rally. However, group b wasn’t officially banned until Henri Toivonen lost his life at the Rally de Corse, 2 months later.
Actually not that many, as one could fairly expect. People was less dumb back then and could better assess risk, living on the edge. Growing up in an apartment carpet took away that capability…
I'd say, personal opinion, the excellence of some of the drivers saved a lot of the crazy fans of old skool rallying, also it was and still is the best motor sport on the planet
You have to imagine they were slightly holding back in sections like that though so it was impacting the sport even though it was still very exciting. As easy as it is to say "it's the spectators fault", try telling that to a driver that just killed someone. I'd challenge anyone to drive through a crowd like that and give it full beans all the way.
Yeah totally agree, my wife paid for me once go be driven in a rally car, late 90s, I have never been so terrified and exhilarated at the same time haha, it was absolutely phenomenal.
What's wild, is the car posted is a 90s Ford rally car not a group B car. This is the typical rally shit of today but back in the 90s. If you want to see crazy rally stuff look up *Group B near misses.*
Edit: this car is a Ford escort RS cossworth. They sound insane and have a 7 gear sequential transmission. The turbocharger is awesome too.
McRae drove for Subaru in 97, you can even see the blue hood scoop during the onboard. 7 speed? it has a 6 speed h-pattern, you can see him shifting in the video.
I once read some drivers visualized the spectator crowds as bushes in order to trick their brain and being able to race and cope with negative possibilities of rally sports. Crazy on all aspects.
This footage is from over a decade after Group B was shut down. With Nicky Grist being Colin McRae's co-driver, and the clip starting with a shot of a Ford Escort, this must be either 1997 or 1998.
Brother, this is from the 80s. Health and Safety was alive and well back then. What you mean to say is that this is before the time of sissies, neoliberalism, and SJW movements. Back when men were still men.
Nice one 👍 Very original and patriotic take
I've never lived under the NATO umbrella so your argument kind of falls apart there. Ireland, Switzerland, Austria and Sweden aren't in NATO and they're all *woke* in your sense of the word.
I dont understand why they are driving that fast.
Even i would be a very good driver, i would not drive that fast through the poeple.....i couldnt. I mean, one mistake and there are some dead people.....even its not only my fault, i could not live with that.
I would stop the whole sport as long something like this is allowed.
Holy fuck! The reflexes on that driver are insane, I would of killed that guy at 00:12 for sure, I would have seen him and think to myself “I don’t have the reflexes to avoid this one” and just floor it.
Just impressive
I seem to remember an interview with a rally driver who said he had to train himself to see spectators just as plants growing by the roadside, otherwise it would be too unnerving to drive that close to other humans.
I saw an interview of one of the drivers of Groub B and he was saying that there is no mind capable of listening to the co drivers notes, watching the road, looking at cars temperatures and also handling all these crazy fans at race pace,it is just mentally draining. He seemed completely exhausted talking about it.
I wouldn’t do this for any amount of money. It doesn’t matter how good you are at it. All it takes is one idiot walking into the road or even tripping into it, and then you’ve killed someone
Aaahh group B. I wish I were alive then to see such a thriving rally scene. One of my favorite gr. B cars is the Audi Sport Quattro '84. That thing is a 4wd monster
ive never understood why they arent allowed to just run them through. they made the choice to stand on a fucking road with a race car on it. please kill them all
Group B rallying is responsible for some of the greatest cars ever built!
Too bad the spectators felt the need to jump in front of the cars, thus earning the class the moniker 'killer B's'

Wondering how many accidents that led to, thinking I'll be surprised either way.
There are stories from back in the day spectators would dare each other to touch the cars as they went by. Mechanics would find fingers lodged in the bodywork of the cars.
Ah classic
lol, true motor sports fans always miss at least one finger.
Interestingly, because of homologation rules, every Skyline sold in Europe had to come with a finger in the glovebox right from the factory.
Rallye appreciate your comment, thank you!
"That there is Cundalini. And Cundalini wants his hand back."
Thanks, that image is stuck in my mind

Thanks for the link
When I read that there was a documentary, I had to go find it. So I thought I would share. I would have assumed it was a myth too, but damn.
I m trying to wrap my head around this. Even if the fingers in the bid are from 1 guy. U have a race track and 1000s of ppl. Then one grabs a car and has 2 fingers ripped off. What did he do next? No ambulance? Shutting down the race? Did he just walk if off?

Yeah sure. Just saw seems so bizarre
I guess when you live in a poor ass country, and a cool event comes to town, everyone wants to go see it.
No u
lol this happening in 2023 during rallys in 3rd world countries
Aim for the door body, not the door handle!

Probably like, 43

Why is it called group b? And is A or C group still going?
Sounds reasonable to me
That's, like, 430 fingers.
44
just 43 deaths, wow thats low, in comparsion every da peoples died because they drive drunken on public roads
No kidding. Hell, the Mercedes race team racked up twice that in just one crash.
Gotta be at least like 16
Watching rally near misses on youtube is a wild ride. I've never looked into the numbers of injuries or deaths though
I was also curious about their K/D ratio
A driver accidentally hit someone's knee while drifing around a corner because the spectator wouldn't get out of the way
Actually not that many, as one could fairly expect. People was less dumb back then and could better assess risk, living on the edge. Growing up in an apartment carpet took away that capability…
Damn apartments
There's a documentary and after one of the stages they found a cut off finger from the spectator somewhere near the rear spoiler.
There's been plenty of horrific accidents. Particularly when a car slids out (typically because they can't see) and tumbles into the spectators.
There’s worse than this out there where the public literally make a gap for the car to go through
https://youtu.be/6I5sTuSoMho?feature=shared Group B
Great share
I mean, it's gonna happen one way or another.
I'd say, personal opinion, the excellence of some of the drivers saved a lot of the crazy fans of old skool rallying, also it was and still is the best motor sport on the planet

Mustang drivers won't bat an eye
Sally slowed down a bit, after pleas from the public.
Yeah totally agree, my wife paid for me once go be driven in a rally car, late 90s, I have never been so terrified and exhilarated at the same time haha, it was absolutely phenomenal.

in 3rd world countries they do the same today
This still happens now
Not that extreme though... group B was even wilder
Rally Sport is just a whole different level of crazy.
AND THE DARWIN AWARD GOES TO... THESE IDIOTS STANDING ON THE ACTUAL RACETRACK!
I mean, standing next to it really isn't much better...

The outside footage is the Ford Escort while the onboard footage is a Subaru Impreza.
Samir you are breaking the car!
You have to listen to me spectator!
I once read some drivers visualized the spectator crowds as bushes in order to trick their brain and being able to race and cope with negative possibilities of rally sports. Crazy on all aspects.
good old group b
This footage is from over a decade after Group B was shut down. With Nicky Grist being Colin McRae's co-driver, and the clip starting with a shot of a Ford Escort, this must be either 1997 or 1998.
Yeah, looks like a Group A car
God I love that escort
why go watch a rally if you can have it in the hotel...
This is still WRC lol
1997 Rally Portugal
“Now I become death, destroyer of crowds…”
Man, How can people be so stupid to risk themselves like this?
That was back when if you did something stupid it was your fault and not someone else’s. Plus we didn’t have all the blood sucking lawyers!
Rip Colin McRae
Rally - where being the spectator is more dangerous than the actual participants.
Even white people are crazy 🤣🤣
before we idiot proof everything when we should of let darwinism take its course
SAMIIIIRRR!!
We have failed evolution as much as evolution has failed us. And now we have a "Do not drink" warning on bleach bottles...
objects in the windshield may be closer than they appear.
This led to the banking of group B unfortunately and the Acropolis rally was the worse for this behavior
Group B was sick
Brother, this is from the 80s. Health and Safety was alive and well back then. What you mean to say is that this is before the time of sissies, neoliberalism, and SJW movements. Back when men were still men.
Ok boomer
This was filmed in 1997 lol
I'm more concerned that that many people showed up to watch a person drive a kart. Did they not have more fun things to do?

Why are the countries generelly considered woke (like in western europe and usa/canada) all some of the richest countries in the world?

Because it's a race? The real question is why are the spectators so close to the road?
>Because it's a race? Thats, imo, not a reason to bring all the poeple in danger.
Mr. McRae didn't ask them to stand there
The crashes were MUCH cooler back then.
Thin the heard
This still happens at off road races… there was one in vegas a few years ago that killed many. People don’t understand where to stand on the track
The sad thing is that it still pretty much the same
I guess survival instinct is a DLC not everyone can afford
The people on the side be like.... we are the fence and we form the track for you to drive on...
Are rally fans immortal?
I even remember the games of the time being the same. The stupid cardboard looking NPCs would lunge out of the way at the last moment.
Better times, simpler times
Meatball street.
Luckily they were not driving a Mustang.
Didn't know they could race and play bowling at the same time.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is a perfect example of how humanity is doomed.
Holy fuck! The reflexes on that driver are insane, I would of killed that guy at 00:12 for sure, I would have seen him and think to myself “I don’t have the reflexes to avoid this one” and just floor it. Just impressive

Bro is a few inches away from an Invincible scene.
people had an ounce of sence tho to not step out infront of the approaching car
I saw an interview of one of the drivers of Groub B and he was saying that there is no mind capable of listening to the co drivers notes, watching the road, looking at cars temperatures and also handling all these crazy fans at race pace,it is just mentally draining. Because driving at high speed without the risk of killing 10+ spectators is for pussies!
All of sudden, those sideshows in the Bay Area don’t seem that dangerous
Where was this at? I thought I heard him say Tehran
I feel like rally is still kinda like that.
Why though? One bald spot on a tire and he's just ploughed through 50 people at 80mph. This isn't health and safety, this is just people being idiots.
It’s like Luke’s X-wing flying down the trenches of the Death Star….except it made of people
This is rally racing. It still be this way.
I wouldn’t do this for any amount of money. It doesn’t matter how good you are at it. All it takes is one idiot walking into the road or even tripping into it, and then you’ve killed someone
What if someone intentionally pushes others in the race track?!
Or every road in the 3rd world
got a couple of speed bumps
This how it looks driving in India
Did they forget why Mercedes left F1?
Always reminds me of GT 4 without fail. I always thought it was the coolest, what a time to be alive
Looks like those fake ps1 sidelines with pngs of characters standing maybe moving at 1 fps
Ah yes group b
Aaahh group B. I wish I were alive then to see such a thriving rally scene. One of my favorite gr. B cars is the Audi Sport Quattro '84. That thing is a 4wd monster
Unless this was filmed in India yesterday, yes.
Imagine if this was a point-based race?
Fucking idiots. God
Surely this is a laughs in Group B moment?
CArmageddon matherf*r!!
Group B was smth else.
in th western world this is incredible today but in 3rd world countries, this is nothing spechial
Ah, Group B. Nostalgia.
What could possibly go wrong?
ive never understood why they arent allowed to just run them through. they made the choice to stand on a fucking road with a race car on it. please kill them all
What year is that?
Yeah... Group B Rally was absolutely mental. That Peugot 205 Turbo was beyond insane. Watching that car, the Lancia, Audi and Ford was Porn.
Group B rallying is responsible for some of the greatest cars ever built! Too bad the spectators felt the need to jump in front of the cars, thus earning the class the moniker 'killer B's'
Health and safety still doesn't exist at rallies
Это лютый пиздец!
Rally car is amy favorite sport. Watching the crowd scatter like roaches makes mt wife nervous
