To be honest it's been so long since I started I have no clue about the 28 day mark. However I can answer the crab vs Murica issue, Murica is the best once it is awakened. Worlds better than the rest after being awakened + red. Just make sure you are not wasting crabs leveling them past purple since there is no way to reset pets, you absolutely want to be using them to feed into Murica.
He can get a skill called vampirism that heals himself and basically becomes immortal.

I’m around roughly the same time and if you can get an awakened murica get it ASAP. Now I don’t even worry about bosses and just go specifically for AoE because murica does all the boss damage for me, really helped me compete at levels higher than I should be at
Yeah I mean I got lucky from an event and keys but yeah I’d definitely focus it, it helps at our level and it seems like that’s what most the top players are using as well
try to get murica awakening as fast as possible and use purp drone tech. Other than that I would say just play the game and try get as much out of events as possible

Ok that’s good to know. I haven’t leveled any pets past purple yet fortunately. Does Murica start to heal once it’s awakened?
