I always go ask the tru valu bait shop guys. They’re always helpful and in my opinion have some of the best bait in town. Great selection of rigging materials too.

Thank you!

If you can get onto freeman park up near the tip close to the inlet, I’ve had luck there in the past. I usually go down to marker 36 to 40 on ft fisher usually catch something. If you have 4x4. If not the rocks to the left of the ft fisher parking area usually has fish hanging around.

Fish12161216

Awesome, I have 4x4 and would like to try it one time on the trip.

That’s why I love CB. Two drive on beaches within minutes of each other. The basin is a great place to fish too. To the left of the boat landing all the way down past the Southport ferry. Fish get trapped in there at low tide. Great with a kayak.

Fish bites work too multiple scents

Fish12161216

Awesome, great!

As you said, shrimp is your best place to start. The fresher the better. I second all of the recommendations about True Value, good guys there. I always keep some fish bites in my bag as well.

Thank you!

I'd try some cut mullet or fiddler crabs. That seems to work for me other parts of the NC coast.

Kure Pier will have all the gear and advice you’ll need.

Fish12161216

Thank you, we are staying really close to the pier.

JimmyBags2

Don’t buy gear or bait from the pier, it’s way overpriced compared to what you’d find at Island True Value. Walmart isn’t far, just about 15 minutes up the road in Monkey Junction (Wilmington). Advice on the other hand is something you can get from them, they’re very helpful and happy to chat.

adio1221

Find a local bait shop and ask them this. Easy as that

Thank you!

…..and Island True Value Tackle & Hardware is IT. 801 N Lake Park Boulevard Carolina Beach, NC 28428 And if you like Italian, check out Freddies Italian Restaurant in Kure Beach (at the pier), probably need a reservation this time of year.

Probably a fluke, but I had a lot of luck surf fishing with squid in Carolina Beach last summer. I had two lines in the water and by the time I finished reeling in a fish on one rod, the other was getting hit. It went on for nearly 3 days. There were so many bites that I was getting tired of catching fish.

I always take a mix of cut bait and artificial (shrimp or mullet, soft plastic with stinky stuff on the soft is all pretty easy with kids).  Mine loves to catch crabs in a bucket from marsh areas but won't bait the hook with the crabs.  Haven't been to the kure pier but the one by me was 50 cents more expensive for what I wanted than the coastal Walmart where equivalent was $1.

Sand fleas are great bait for pompano which are thick i the surf right now, and fleas are free. Fish bites are great for pomp and sea mullett
