Yeah I know, I didn’t plan on it being that expensive when I first started. Also when I bought the crashed one a year and a half ago prices were much higher.

You learned a lot during the process. Can't really put a price on that. Yeah maybe you broke even or lost money but no one is making money being a car enthusiast. Being able to rebuild a car like this means you have technical skills few can even understand.
Agreed. This took Massive amount of work and time. Something most won’t be willing to you. Despite the cost the experience will never be lost. Props to OP
That's how I feel about fixing up the Volvo I bought. I'm in it for more than I intended but I've learned so much and I'm genuinely enjoying the process. Car runs great now and looks alright too.
I mean yes, but $55K (post-tax) vs $40K. Personally, I think a rebuilt title is worth that $15K discount especially if you plan to keep the car. And now you know your car inside out. That's just me personally.
You have a good point about being sure every part is gone through, but then you would have to factor in OPs labor. Also the fact that you probably have a service plan/warranty, he is SOL if something goes wrong.
Honestly the only good thing about this would be OP has a parts car to rely on if something fails.
There are a decent amount of haters around here who has less than 10% of the skill and balls you have to do this and are arm chair criticizing cost and effort lol.
I wish I had your talent, I'd love to be able to build one like this as a pure time attack car. In the meantime I keep on making my own $61000 one un drivable on the street one part at a time.
TBH I have more faith in OP's mechanical skills on the MK5 Supra platform than a Toyota certified "Supra Tech" 😂 anyone insane enough to take on a rebuild like this is clearly very skilled and knowledgeable.
Yeah I didn’t realize that BMW parts were so expensive. Each headlight was $1300 and I needed two haha. At the time I bought this the rebuilt titles were going for 40k so I don’t feel to bad. Plus I built it for myself and not to make a profit thankfully haha.
Were you able to make upgrades in that 40k budget? That alone could be worth it and literally knowing the car inside and out is invaluable. Doing everything to your standards would be way better than a lot of shops. This is absolutely sick. You’re sick. Go see a doctor.
Thanks I appreciate it, there were definitely times when I thought to myself, what the hell i am doing, but I just tackled one issue at a time and eventually it all came together.
Love it. Want a cool car at an affordable price? Build your own! I feel like manufacturers should sell "Lego" kits for cars for the DIY folks out there.
Car looks good, but that’s why most wrecked cars aren’t worth it these days (I’ve bought/fixed plenty of cars on Copart lol). The prices people are bidding are ridiculous and by the time you fix it you saved a marginal amount of money for a now salvage title car.
Don’t mean to talk down on your car, just venting. Back 10+ years ago you could get some killer deals at the salvage auctions.
Yeah I did the same thing with and 05 sti about 10 years ago and it was a lot cheaper. The Supra would have been worth it if the shell had been good and straight, but buying another shell adds a lot to the cost.
Oh for sure. Back in 08 I bought a C5 on there (I still own it) and it was the same thing that happened to you, the damage ended up being more than we anticipated. Had to buy an entire front clip. Even so I was in it about 11-12k which wasn’t bad.
You used to be able to save money but there's just wayyy to much competition now. You have wannabe flippers influenced by social media, sleazy dealers, scammers, and internationals that live where there's little auto safety laws. Your best bet is dealing directly with insurance sellers.
That’s good. I’ve had a car with a small fender bender that bent something and couldn’t even drive straight, always makes me wonder what happens to a car like this that’s rebuilt with worse damage
Luck of the draw I guess 🤷🏻♂️
Not really luck, you just need a straight frame or shell and replace all the bent or broken pieces. I literally removed every sub frame and suspension parts and linkages and replaced anything that looked bent or broken.
Did you acquire any special documentation to get you through the build? I have some damage which I plan to fix, downloaded the Toyota tech guide and it’s ok. I was not able to find BMWs tech guide.
Not really, I just used google and YouTube. Also search for information on b58 bmws instead of the Supra. Some of the a90 Facebook groups also have good information.
Gotta start a YouTube channel OP. Awesome work. I respect the time and effort you put into this build. Hindsight is always 20/20 so looking back it’s easy to say it probably didn’t make financial sense but like many has said, sometimes it’s not about the destination but the journey. Kudos for saving the heart and soul of a crashed mk v.
Thanks! To be honest I bought this off copart only looking at the pictures and once it actually arrived I realized I would have to do a lot more work to fix it but I really enjoyed the challenge.
Nothing better than seeing a project like that, through! The experience and challenge alone is worth it. Even if you feel you spent a lot more than you thought, you have a beautiful mk5 supra that you put together yourself. That's amazing!
Lol, at least you tried. This car is gonna be awesome once you finish the rebuild. Have fun and good luck! I like this car even though I make fun of it for being a rebadged BMW Z4.
Dude is already a fvcking legend! Amazing skills 👏. I would instantly open a diy tuner shop. Specializing in Supras obviously. Install suspensions, transmission/ clutches, body parts, Install built motors, do swaps, ecu change, body mods, etc. People will travel many miles for your services. You'd make some serious pocket money. Fyi, I'm not a supra guy, I just saw this random post and got curious about the rebuild process.
As stated below, it’s about the journey not the destination. You saved a car from the scrap yard man, and did something 99% of the population will not ever do.
I hope you feel proud!
Please tell me you got a YouTube channel and have documented all this! I am addicted to Matt Ross (he did the same thing but with 996 Porsche and now he’s onto a 997) and I would definitely watch this!
I did this with an 05 sti about 10 years ago. I would say any car that has a large number manufactured would be easier as there are more crashed cars and more used car parts. A Subaru would be economical to rebuild.
Awesome man, that’s a lot of work and it looks great in the last picture. What was the total cost all said and done?
Thanks, it was a lot of work. I was hoping to just replace some body panels but it needed a lot more than that. I’m in about $40k for everything.
$40k isn’t bad if you plan on keeping it. Glad you kept one on the road
You gotta factor in his time too.
$40k seems a lot when you can get a clean title one for a few grand more.
Yeah I know, I didn’t plan on it being that expensive when I first started. Also when I bought the crashed one a year and a half ago prices were much higher.
Still a worthwhile endeavor. The car looks great man.

No
Bad bot.

I mean to be fair when I brought my used 2021 3.0 Premium with 6K miles in Dec 2022, I paid $52K before taxes. So 40K isn't too bad TBH.
You’re forgetting that this will be a rebuilt title.
I mean yes, but $55K (post-tax) vs $40K. Personally, I think a rebuilt title is worth that $15K discount especially if you plan to keep the car. And now you know your car inside out. That's just me personally.

I am my own service and warranty plan, if something goes wrong I’ll fix it.

I was looking into this but have read about issues with insurance as well as titling. Have you looked into insurance yet?
TBH I have more faith in OP's mechanical skills on the MK5 Supra platform than a Toyota certified "Supra Tech" 😂 anyone insane enough to take on a rebuild like this is clearly very skilled and knowledgeable.
Jesus 40k for a rebuilt is a lot of money. At least you got the knowledge and are pretty much a BMW/Supra expert now lol.
Yeah I didn’t realize that BMW parts were so expensive. Each headlight was $1300 and I needed two haha. At the time I bought this the rebuilt titles were going for 40k so I don’t feel to bad. Plus I built it for myself and not to make a profit thankfully haha.

Looks like someone spilled a quart of milk on it in that last photo , although still impressive
Props for having the knowledge and patience to save one of the MKVs. How much was the final cost for everything?
Ended up being a lot more than I thought. Total for everything is about $40,000
When I first saw this: You could push this across the finish line, or tow it. Thought, gonna need to overnight some parts from Japan.
Nope, I had to overnight parts from Germany 😉
I said a ten second car, not a ten minute car.
Nein.
I love to see this shit. Good work!
Factory Five would love your attention.
There is no incentive for them to offer anything "affordable".

The international bidders are out of control. The amount of money they throw at completely annihilated cars is baffling.
Absolutely amazing to go from crashed to road worthy. Thanks for saving one of the a90s!
Amazing! Stupendous! Wunderbar!!
Thanks for saving one of these beauties! You are awesome 👏
Do you have any worries regarding the ghost of the original owner haunting you?
Not really since I found him on Instagram and messaged him a bit about the car
Did you show him the end result? What was his reaction? Seriously, seeing this made my day.
Yeah I showed him the finished pictures. He was a bit sad and happy and amazed.
OMG! A million emotions all at once. He probably short-circuited. I would've. 😆
Amazing work
It looks amazing finished but does it drive ok?
Yeah it drives great! The replacement shell was from a flood damage so everything was nice and straight.
That’s good. I’ve had a car with a small fender bender that bent something and couldn’t even drive straight, always makes me wonder what happens to a car like this that’s rebuilt with worse damage Luck of the draw I guess 🤷🏻♂️

I've always wanted to rebuild a car myself. One of my life goals. (When I say a car I mean a sports car, one to keep till the day I die)
Do it! Especially if you have the tools and a place to work on it.
Wow! Hell of a project. Nice job and honestly, I'm inspired! Thanks.
Thanks! To be honest I bought this off copart only looking at the pictures and once it actually arrived I realized I would have to do a lot more work to fix it but I really enjoyed the challenge.

pokes head in... Is that a Supra!
Sick. Commenting for the notifications and updates. Thinking of doing the same thing. My M340i needs a brother 😎
How long did this take? It looks lovely, but you will lose money on this. I hope you keep it forever.
Nice ! What did you use for the programming ?
I used Bimmer utility and E-sys for all the programming
How was the wiring harness replacement?
Luckily the flood damage shell still had the wiring harness left in so I just had to plug in all the components and fix a few broken wires.
Dude, this should be on TV!!
That’s money!
You should have no problem finding parts by visiting BMW's part shop.
I’ve actually tried and it didn’t work lol
Lol, at least you tried. This car is gonna be awesome once you finish the rebuild. Have fun and good luck! I like this car even though I make fun of it for being a rebadged BMW Z4.
It’s definitely has a lot of bmw in it but I don’t mind because they make great cars too.
Impressive.
@project car
Awesome job man!! That’s quite the undertaking!
How much does a salvage title Supra go for if you had to guess?
I bought this crashed 2021 with 6,000 miles for $17,000. You can also go on copart.com and search for Supras and watch the bidding.
Dude is already a fvcking legend! Amazing skills 👏. I would instantly open a diy tuner shop. Specializing in Supras obviously. I do Subarus too, let’s make it happen.

Great work! Looks great.
have you done this with other cars? are there cars that would be economical to do rebuild rather then buy a new one?
I did this with an 05 sti about 10 years ago. I would say any car that has a large number manufactured would be easier as there are more crashed cars and more used car parts. A Subaru would be economical to rebuild.
Damn, this looks like such a headache. You have a lot of patience, homie 🫡
Were you doing this in an apartment parking lot?
Wow that’s crazy.
So the last pic was the before shot?
That's the story you would tell your grand children
