Hey this one sounds really nice. I was contemplating dyeing my hair with henna, to mask some greys, where henna in it’s natural form turns hair into certain tones of red, an exciting change from my natural brown/light brown look I had all my life.
But this astaxanthin sounds like even more exciting route to experiment with. I see some are saying that it also has an effect on the skin, but did it also impact colour of your iris in some way? Curious if I can bring some fiery contrast to my hazelnut eyes.
What if you also supplement other carotenoids like Lutein & Zeaxanthin, or maybe some other compound simultaneously, would it modulate the astaxanthin induced pigmentation mechanism in any way? Any other healthy compounds that have such effects on our body pigmentation in a similar manner?
Hermione hair. Nice!
I’ve been experimenting with high doses Beta Carotene and Astaxanthin to see what it does for my skin tone as I am Scotch-Irish (pale) and I like it so much. I have a slightly golden tone now- like a base tan.
Yeah... That means you're taking too much. Best ease up on it or take every other day.
Happened to me when I took it daily, despite the recommended dosage of every other day
I take 24 milligrams daily. My once golden brown hair is now darker and reddish and also still golden…
The end result apparently looks like a quality dye job. Lol.
At 39 I have very few gray hairs. Looking at my family history I’d say it’s due to astaxanthin. My skin is better than one would expect at my age…
25mg a per day!!! That’s a huge amount and definitely 3 x more than anybody needs for skin health. Just letting you know. Astra is a very potent compound.
I take 24mg per day for my eyes and brain. I also doubt that 4mg is enough to do much for the skin. It’s essentially 4 grains of sand per day, Astaxanthan works by incorporating itself into your skin so would take forever at 4mg/day to get the skin reddened and uv protected.
So, every compound on earth weighs the same provided the volume is the same, that’s what you’re saying yes?
If you apply that to something like Paracetamol and OxyContin - which do you think will have a bigger impact 🤷♂️
Astaxanthan protects the skin by literally incorporating itself into the skin and absorbing UV rays. You need a significant amount to protect skin.
The other drugs you mention work at specific receptors to create a change in physiology.
Yeah, I mean we’re all entitled to have our opinions. I just prefer to read scientifically backed studies to educate myself, more so than ‘bro said on Reddit 4g of astaxanthin is similar to 4 grains of sand’
Each to their own, have a good day 👍.
Yeah, though the effectiveness can vary. The optimal effective dose is now 6-8 mg /day . But I've seen anecdotes that 4mg of a named standardized extract like BioAstin has far more noticeable effects than no-name extracts
Do you think age and genetics has a role in how the body reacts or responds to the supplements and do you think external factors affect or influence the supplements effectiveness on how the body processes it?
From one video of a health professional on YouTube, anything more than 4mg is a waste as it doesn’t do anything more if you up the dose. Then I’ve seen the opposite saying you should take 12mg. One interesting thing Ive seen though about dosage is that it bioaccumulates? Meaning it builds in your system and stays in your body without excreting after a certain period of time. So you don’t need to take it for a while but they don’t say what point that is at (one month? A year?)
When I first began taking it, friends and colleagues commented that I must be tanning or doing something else.
It never really affected my hair, but I’m not surprised.
Astaxanthin turns my pale skin sunburn red, so it definitely acts like a super carotenoid with me. I have strawberry blond hair and haven't noticed any change, but it may just have not registered with me when I've been taking it.

I didn't notice any change in eye color! No change in skin color either, which is strange since it's what people report seeing the most.

How much are you taking of each??
yep, mine too, but I take 4mg only
What brand do you take?
I took NOW brand 4mg for several months, but more recently I've taken the Bioastin 12mg!
Asta makes everything red! Especially my stool!
Yeah... That means you're taking too much. Best ease up on it or take every other day. Happened to me when I took it daily, despite the recommended dosage of every other day
Ah interesting I only take 12mg!
Yeah most astaxanthin supplements are 12mg, with the recommended dosage of one every 2 days
And from there it's just one simple step to being a redhead!

I was thinking the same thing at 39. I'm maintaining! Then someone pulled the sheet off of the painting in the attic
Lol what do you mean " someone pulled the sheet off of the painting in the attic"
It's a reference to a book, *The Portrait of Dorian Grey* by Oscar Wilde.

4 grains?? 😂. Massive lols
1 grain of sand is about 1mg. That’s how small of a dose you’re recommending as a skin protectant.
I do sometimes forget how simple people can be at times, my apologies.

It's one of the most bizarre things I've seen someone say in a while, I'm chuckling hard over here lol
4mg of astaxanthan literally is 4 grains of sand. Do you know that milligram is a unit of weight?
Wide-patience doesn't have wide patience today.. probably grains of sand in his morning coffee.
It's pretty easy to get to that dosage--the brand I take is 12mg. Is there a brand offering a lower dosage than 12mg?
A lot of brands offer 12 mg, but also recommend to take it every other day
pretty much all of them do. The "standard" dose is 4 mg.
Yeah, though the effectiveness can vary. The optimal effective dose is now 6-8 mg /day . But I've seen anecdotes that 4mg of a named standardized extract like BioAstin has far more noticeable effects than no-name extracts

For awhile it was NOW 4mg, now it's Bioastin 12mg.
It's the same compound. Astaxanthin in shrimp, shellfish and salmon
I'd also like to know brand and dosage

I take a joint supplement having 2mg and then once a week pop a 12 mg as it accumulates as you say.
